In the 139th Psalm, 14th verse,David says, “I will praise thee, for I amfearfully and wonderfully made.”These wonderful bodies are the cre-ation of which God has so marvelouslydisplayed His infinite wisdom.

I suppose you have all beeneither near or inside of a factory. Youhave heard the noise of the shafts andthe pulleys and machinery. A factoryis quite wonderful, but do you knowthat in your bodies are found the ele-ments of almost all the kinds of ma-chinery that are used in the world?God has so created us that we do nothear the noise of the machinery of ourbodies, but if you will place your fin-gers gently in your ears you will heara peculiar rumbling sound. Thatsound which you hear is the noise ofthe machinery of your body, which isin constant motion.

Now, the heart, which pumpsthe blood into all portions of the body, makes the largest portion of thisnoise. If the heart were to pump differ-ent blood with each pulsation, insteadof pumping the same blood over andover again, in twenty-four hours theheart of a man of ordinary size wouldpump 150 barrels of blood.

The Bible says that the days ofour years are threescore years andten, or in other words, the allottedperiod of an ordinary life is 70 years. Now, in 70 years the heart wouldpump 164,389,786 gallons; or, to give

it to you in barrels, it would make4,566,382 barrels. If you were to placesix barrels on a wagon, which wouldmake a good load for two horses, youwould have 761,063 loads of thesebarrels. If you were to place theseteams with the wagons containing sixbarrels apiece, with 36 gallons each,at a distance of 25 feet apart, it wouldmake a string of teams stretching1,778 miles, or as far as from NewYork City to Des Moines, in the Stateof Iowa, or from New York City downto the Gulf of Mexico.

I think you will now be able tounderstand what a wonderful pumpeach of us has within our own breast. And it may surprise some of you whenI tell you that the heart, at each throb, beats with a power equal to 100,000pounds.

An ordinary engine or pump wouldsoon wear out, but this little engine ofthe heart goes on beating day andnight from the time we are born untilwe are 70 years of age or older.

One more wonderful thing aboutthe heart is that just as our naturalhearts are hidden away in these bod-ies of ours, so are our spiritual heartsare tucked away in our minds. It isthis moral character and spiritual lifeto which the Bible refers when it says,“Keep thine heart with all diligence, for out of it are the issues of life.”

Step 3

Read the Lesson Aim.

Lesson Aim

This lesson is to help teach yourchild how his heart works.

It is to help him understand and bealert to the fact that it is throughthe heart, or mind, that God speaksto him. The spiritual heart, or mind,as it responds to God, helps the

spiritual life to flourish, as thephysical heart and blood sustain thephysical life.

The heart is the great pump thatcirculates the blood throughoutthe body. It shows the great law ofgiving and receiving that shouldoperate in the spiritual heart too.The Jews refused to give the lightthey had been given to the world, therefore they did not receiveJesus when He came. They had cutthemselves off from God’s circle oflove.

Heart disease causes trouble for thewhole body. Most of God’s chosenpeople, especially the leaders, hadspiritual “heart disease” at the timeof Christ’s first advent.

A bad diet leads to clogged arteriesand a lack of alertness. The Jewshad an unbalanced spiritual dietand this made them unpreparedwhen “the fullness of the time wascome” (Galatians 4:4).

Gardening SheetLesson SubjectTitle

Out of SeasonIn SeasonThe heart keeps the body

flourishing by sending the bloodthrough the arteries and nourishingthe tissues.

Good gardening depends ongood soil. It helps feed the plants. Ifyour soil seems to lack what it takesto grow good plants, then the firststep is to search out the causes ofplant failures.

Ask and answer these questions:

1. Is the topsoil gone? 2. Does it drain poorly? 3. Is there lack of plant food? 4. Does it have bad texture? 5. Is it difficult to work? 6. Can you think of other problems

with your soil?

Test your soil. (Kits can bepurchased as a local store.)

The heart (mind/soil) needs tobe broken up by the Word.

Study more about soils andtheir needs. Did you know thatthere is more going on in the soilbelow your feet than there ever isabove the soil? In a single teaspoon-ful of good garden soil there may beas many as 5 billion living organ-isms that man has thus far discov-ered!

What do these organisms do?Tiny and microscopic though thesemay be individually, by sheer num-bers they exert an enormous power(like a drop of blood pumpedthrough the body). They help miner-als and chemical compounds in thesoil transform the soil from unus-able to usable. Night and day, whenmoisture and temperature condi-tions are right, these creatures livean active, rapid life cycle. In doingso, they yield by-products whichyour garden plants need for lush, attractive growth. (Our hearts needto be alert and active for the Lord. Was Israel?)

“Such are a few of the many lessons taught by nature’s living par-able of the sower and the seed. As parents and teachers try to teachthese lessons, the work should be made practical. Let the childrenthemselves prepare the soil and sow the seed. As they work, theparent or teacher can explain the garden of the heart with the goodor bad seed sown there, and that as the garden must be preparedfor the natural seed, so the heart must be prepared for the seed oftruth. As the seed is cast into the ground, they can teach the lessonof Christ’s death; and as the blade springs up, they can teach thelesson of the truth of the resurrection. As the plants grow, the corre-spondence between the natural and the spiritual sowing may becontinued.”
