Waste is an opportunity!

We create enough waste to fill a football stadium every few months - except that we don’t store it neatly in stadi-ums: 70% of waste ends up in toxic landfill sites or, worse, pollutes our open spaces and waterways. Toxic beaches and rivers, litter, and smog, have negative impacts on our wellbeing. We extract resources from nature to create billions of tonnes of products which we often use only once and then dump them, or pump them out to sea. We pay lots of money for this crazy process!Eliminating waste is a responsibility for us all if we are to pass a healthy, vibrant and livable planet on to our chil-dren - and the idea is not complicated: There is no waste

in nature. In nature, everything is cycled and recycled through the system. Waste more of a social issue than a technical one. It involves matching the work that needs to be done, with the people to do it. Hidden Desire (HD) is an admirable example of this approach at work. This design-based social experiment is an ongoing exploration of what can be done with a community’s reusable trash - and how can it be used in ways that to create value for the community. HD does not only generate useful ideas that address social needs; it also takes practical steps to try out ideas and demon-strate their effectiveness. So far, HD has helped the community of Agua Blanca

HIDDEN DESIRE CO- DESIGN PROJECT IN AGUA BLANCA, OAXACAreconnect with its environment. Together, designers and local citizens have identified opportunities for the bet-ter use of resources. The project has also mobilised the skills, knowledge and experience of local citizens in the cause of a better quality of life.

This kind of work - the development of ideas, and the deepening of trust between local people and designers - is an ongoing process. Both sides are learning - by doing it - how to work in teams, and how to share knowledge. This learning process is itself a form of value creation.
