Desktop Energy Saving

Desktop Energy SavingHow to do?ForDEPPLWho is this presentation for? This presentation is for those responsible for managing and reducing ICT costs in an organisationDesktop energy consumption can be cut by up to 30%.30% of PCs are left powered on unnecessarily after business hoursDo you know? The desktop environment accounts for a large part of total ICT energy costs, often surpassing that of a buildings server room. It therefore offers a good opportunity to reduce energy consumption. How to do the saving?ICT desktop and peripheral costs can be reduced through two main approaches:More efficient use of existing equipment.Purchasing more efficient equipment.Lets do some mathsDesktop PC energy calculation examplePC + monitor = 100W9-hour business day5-day week = 45 hours45 hours x 100W = 4,500W per week4,500/1000 = 4.5kWh per week50-week year = 225kWhMultiply by number of PCs, e.g.:20 PCs x 225kWh = 4500kWh/year at Rs 5/kWh (example price) = Rs 22,200 (excluding TAX) Source: IBIT and SEAI ICT Working Group1With power management disabled a PC can use 2.5 times more energySaving $$$$$$$$...2Update your hardware procurement policy by introducing energy-efficiency criteria. For example: Purchase certified energy efficient hardware, e.g. Energy Star equipment.Saving $$$$$$$$...3Purchase thin clients or laptops instead of desktops, wherever possible.A Desktop PC can use over 3 times more energy than a Thin ClientSaving $$$$$$$$...4Include whole-life/lifetime costs in evaluating equipment purchases, and not just capital costs. To avoid purchases being made solely on capital cost grounds, calculate the lifetime costs of the equipment, including energy running costs.Saving $$$$$$$$...5If considering laptops as replacement for desktops, include the financial and energy costs of docking stations if they are needed, along with additional monitors, since all of these will use energy, and must be included in the energy saving calculation.Saving $$$$$$$$...6Thin client terminals provide an energy effective alternative to PCs in many environments, typically delivering significant energy savings as compared to desktop PCs.Saving $$$$$$$$...7Thin client terminals provide an energy effective alternative to PCs in many environments, typically delivering significant energy savings as compared to desktop PCs.Saving $$$$$$$$...8A Desktop PC can use over 3 times more energy than a Thin ClientSaving $$$$$$$$...9PCs are not left on after hours for updates. This may be challenging, but can be both feasible and successful with adequate communication to staff beforehand.Saving $$$$$$$$...10All non-essential equipment is switched off out of business hours. There is automated shutdown after hours. Write script to hibernate unattended PCs. Turn off equipment when not required, especially in summer as it reduces heat build-up.Saving $$$$$$$$...11Train key staff to operate energy equipment effectively.Saving $$$$$$$$...12Use an inexpensive plug-in meter to monitor over time.Saving $$$$$$$$...13Screensavers are not necessary on modern monitors, and studies show they actually consume more energy than allowing the monitor to dim when it is not in use.

This will also extend your battery life, if you are on business journey with laptop.Saving $$$$$$$$...14Keep in mind that inkjet printers use up to 90 % less energy than laser printers. Colour printing can also use more energy than black and white.2 Remember to use double sided printing if your printer has this capability to save paper. Saving $$$$$$$$...15Run all your print jobs at once as each time you start the photocopier it uses more energy.Saving $$$$$$$$...16Only use office equipment you need. Link all computers to just one printer and direct all faxes to just one fax machine. Even better, investigate purchasing a combination fax/printer.Saving $$$$$$$$...17Train your employees. It is all well and good having the most recent energy efficient equipment, but be sure to train employees on how to operate the equipment and maximise all efficiencies. Employee morale might heighten, as they feel theyre doing their bit for the environment.Saving $$$$$$$$...18Install timers. By installing timers, equipment will automatically switch off at designated times. Be sure to inform employees of how they can override the timer for times when they may need to stay back.Saving $$$$$$$$...Cost benefitsThe above mentioned actions can result in significant cost benefits in terms of reduced or avoided:energy consumption;maintenance costs or repairs to old equipment such as desktop computers;replacement costs due to reduced operating life of office equipment; andrunning costsEnvironmental benefitsThe associated environmental benefits may include:resource conservation from avoided maintenance and repairs; andavoided emissions, including greenhouse gases, through energy conservationHappy energy savingThank youSanjay Bharti
