highlights of abu dhabiDon’t miss out on the wealth of attractions, adventures and experiences Abu Dhabi has to offer

Sponsored by:

The largest emirate of the United Arab Emirates (UAE), Abu Dhabi is also

the country’s capital and financial center. Emerging from the shadow of its neighboring emirate Dubai, Abu Dhabi is embarking on major developments while retaining a more relaxed and traditional feel. The emirate’s aim is to draw attention to cultural and business ventures as well as its incredible

hotels and beaches. The Yas Island development is one of the most ambitious and exciting in the region. The new, purpose-built Yas Marina Circuit is already home to the annual F1 Abu Dhabi Grand Prix, and several nearby marinas are projected to offer 1,500 berths between them for residents and elite travelers. The recently opened Ferrari World theme park

features superb family attractions, and the Warner Bros. park, still in development, will further expand the area’s family-friendly entertainment options. There’s no doubt that Abu Dhabi is transforming into one of the Middle East’s top destinations. Here you’ll find Elite Traveler’s picks for your upcoming trip.

SHEIKH ZAYED GRAND MOSQUEThe ornate Sheikh Zayed Mosque, likely the most imposing landmark in Abu Dhabi, can accommodate 40,000 worshippers and is one of the largest mosques in the world. The burial site for its namesake, Sheikh Zayed, the mosque features 80 domes decorated in white marble, 1,000 columns inlaid with semi-precious stones, the world’s largest hand-woven carpet and seven 24K gold-plated chandeliers – again including the world’s largest – that incorporate thousands of Swarovski crystals. Open to non-worshippers Saturday through Thursday, it is the only mosque in Abu Dhabi that non-Muslims are permitted to enter. See page 18

SAADIYAT BEACH GOLF CLUBSaadiyat Beach Golf Club, with its Gary Player-designed course, is one of the world’s most captivating golfing projects. Providing a ‘place to breathe’ away from the hustle and bustle of city life, the club harnesses the stunning natural beauty of Saadiyat Island to create an unparalleled experience, made all the more rewarding with spectacular views of the Gulf’s glittering, crystal blue waters, fringed by pristine white sands. See page 17

FERRARI WORLD ABU DHABIFerrari World Abu Dhabi, opened in November 2010, is the world’s first Ferrari theme park and the largest attraction of its kind. With about 20 rides and attractions beneath the striking 2.15 million-square-foot red roof, the park pays tribute to the passion, excellence, performance and technical innovation that Ferrari has established over the years and continues to represent today. Visitors can enjoy the thrill of some of the world’s most inventive rides, including Formula Rossa (the world’s fastest rollercoaster), eye-catching surroundings and the authentic tastes and aromas of Italy. Ferrari World Abu Dhabi offers amusement for all ages. See page 16

“It is a privilege to be involved in this emerging industry, which integrates a rich cultural heritage and embraces a commitment to delivering excellence to the local population and its tourists…I truly believe that Saadiyat Beach Golf Club supports the vision of Abu Dhabi’s aspirations to become a top-tier leisure and cultural destination of distinction.”

EMIRATES PALACE MARINAVIP Contact: Hans Olbertz, Hotel General Manager Phone: +971 2 690 9000Email: [email protected]: Emirates Palace Marina, West Corniche RoadWebsite: www.emiratespalace.comEmirates Palace’s new marina is one of Abu Dhabi’s most prestigious yachting destinations. In a private bay, on the western side of the magnificent hotel, the marina moors 186 boats of up to 199 feet, with a separate area to berth eight superyachts. A second phase will take the capacity to 205 yachts, including the ability to berth mega yachts of up to 531 feet. Hans Olbertz, General Manager of Emirates Palace, commented on the marina development: “It really is the ideal spot, with Emirates Palace as the spectacular background to the view from your yacht. ...We have opulent hotels, fine dining restaurants and championship golf courses that elite travelers are seeking, and what better way of experiencing the F1 Grand Prix than mooring your yacht at Emirates Palace and then taking a trip to Yas Island on your boat to watch all the action?”

YAS MARINA & YACHT CLUBVIP Contact: Cedric Le Rest, General ManagerPhone: +971 2 696 4554Email: [email protected]: Yas IslandWebsite: www.aldarmarinas.comLocated at the heart of Yas Island, Yas Marina’s berths are adjacent to the Yas Marina Circuit. The region’s latest superyacht marina, it has capacity for 143 yachts, including 70 berths for yachts of over 82 feet. Superyachts of up to 492 feet can be accommodated on a 656-foot pontoon outside the marina. Set to be one of the premier marinas globally, it offers luxury yacht owners direct access to the Yas Yacht Club, an exclusive enclave at the entrance to the marina, and The Yas Hotel, which offers fabulous eateries and nightlife. The marina also presents the ideal viewing platform for the Formula 1 Grand Prix. Yas Island is fast becoming a premier yachting destination providing full service, state-of-the-art mooring facilities and projected capacity for about 1,500 yachts.

Benefiting from access to over 250 miles of stunning coastline, 200

islands off its shores, beautiful cobalt waters and opportunities for clear ocean sailing, Abu Dhabi is ideally positioned to attract superyacht owners

from around the world. The emirate already boasts some world-class facilities and is in the early phases of a long-term plan to build almost 50 new marinas. The launch of the Abu Dhabi Yacht Show, the Middle East’s

only show dedicated to superyachts, further boosted Abu Dhabi’s nautical credentials. The show will be held for the third time in March 2011 and holds a firm place in the superyachting calendar as a must-attend event.

“We have opulent hotels, fine dining restaurants and championship golf courses that elite travelers are seeking, and what better way of experiencing the F1 Grand Prix than mooring your yacht at Emirates Palace and then taking a trip to Yas Island on your boat to watch all the action?”
