NTN-SNR, which is committed to over40 railway transport projects world-wide, is investing in innovation and newproduction capacity to help this sectorexpand.

T he railway industry has been untou-ched by the recession: according to asurvey conducted for the Association

of the European Rail Industry (UNIFE) the mar-ket has grown by around 2.7% each year.NTN-SNR is even forecasting growth in doublefigures for business in this sector in 2014."There are such economic and environmentalchallenges around mobility issues that trans-port projects remain a priority for theauthorities", explains Francis Travostino, Mana-ger of the Railway Sector at NTN-SNR.

OVER FORTY PROJECTS WORLDWIDEThe group is committed to over forty projectsworldwide including a high-speed railway inSaudi Arabia, regional trains in the UK, a tramlines in Toronto, Basle and several Chinese cities,and an underground network in Moscow. Thegroup is active both as a supplier of originalequipment for the main manufacturers in themarket – Bombardier, Alstom, Siemens – andas a partner to the operators in maintenanceoperations. "We are making long-term com-mitments: up to 30 years after the lines arebrought into service ", says Francis Travostino.In this sector NTN-SNR achieves 75% of itsgrowth outside France: it is reaping the benefitsof its international development strategy. A network of expert salespeople is deployed inover twenty countries in Europe, North America

and Asia. "In recent years we have increasedour presence in the field while continuing to invest massively in our production and innova-tion capacities."

SPECIALISED PRODUCTION CENTRESIn 2011 NTN-SNR invested 14 million euros inbuilding a new 1,500 m² plant in Seynod(Haute-Savoie). This plant produces a range ofaxle, transmission and motor bearings, whichare also manufactured on two of the group'sother sites in Annecy (Haute-Savoie, France)and Turin (Italy). "We develop customiseditems for each project depending on the chas-sis – called 'bogies' in the trade – and theconditions in which they will operate" (see textbox).

Two hundred thousand bearings were manu-factured in these three plants in 2013. Andeach new reference was approved on one ofthe test benches of the R&D centre in Annecy:NTN-SNR is one of the few bearings manu-facturers authorised to perform this regulatoryobligation itself. "This enables us to be farmore responsive in test phases, which maytake up to six months" adds Francis Travostino.The group is also developing a quality policy in compliance with various internationalstandards: it already has IRIS (InternationalRailway Industry Standard) certification andhas started applying for German HPQ (Manu-facturer-related product) and Russian GOST(State commercial and industrial standards)accreditation.

PRODUCT AND SERVICE INNOVATIONWith over 40 years' experience in the railwaysector (see text box) NTN-SNR is maintainingits technological advances, particularly in themechatronics sector. Latest innovations: a system that diagnoses the level of bearingwear and integrated sensors that measuretemperature and speed. "These technologieshelp improve safety and reduce maintenancecosts", says the Manager of the Railway Sec-tor.

There is also innovation in the services provi-ded to operators: the Experts & Tools trainingoffer (see O’Mag No. 8) has just been exten-ded to include the replacement of railway bea-rings. NTN-SNR experts go to the operatorsto train their engineers and technicians to assemble and dismantle bearings as part ofmaintenance operations. A unit is also availa-ble dedicated to renovating bearings, givingdetailed explanations of lubricating techniques."This satisfies our customers' need to be independent" concludes Francis Travostino.

NTN-SNR is strongly committed to develop-ment in the railway sector and plans to doubleits bearings offer by 2018.

UP TO FIVE MILLION KILOMETRESA railway bearing weighs between 30 and35 kilos and is designed to last for bet-ween three and five million kilometres. Itstechnical properties – shape, materials, lu-brication – vary mainly according to theaxle load and speed. In a metro train ortramcar it bears an average load of 12tonnes at a speed of 80 km/h. These figures may be as high as 22.5 tonnes and180 km/h for a regional train and 18.5tonnes and 350 km/h for a high-speedtrain. The lubrication and sealing systemlevel are adapted to withstand external attacks by pollution, snow, mud, sand, etc.

PART OF THE HISTORY OF HIGH-SPEED TRAINSNTN-SNR participated directly in the railspeed record that was broken in 2007 inFrance by a TGV (high-speed train) (574.8 km/h). In Japan the group remainsassociated with the 1964 commissioningof the Shinkansen, the local high-speedtrain the commercial speed of which wasrecently increased from 210 to 320 km/h.

I n 2012 KUHN produced and sold over60,000 agricultural machines (ploughs,seed drills, balers, mowers, etc.) in over a

hundred countries. The company, which wasfounded in Alsace in 1828 and which is theworld leader in its sector, has doubled itsturnover in the last six years to over one billioneuros. This expansion has been nurtured byinnovation with 100 engineers dedicated toR&D – out of a total of over 4,000 staff – and1,600 patents filed. "We have been ploughingthe same furrow for over a century: reliable,long-lasting, innovative machines that areperfectly in line with farmers' needs" saysJean-Christophe Haas, Manager ofCommunications at KUHN. The companyexpects the same level of commitment toquality and innovation from its suppliers. As faras bearings are concerned, KUHN has placedits trust in NTN-SNR for forty years.

LONGER SERVICE LIFEThis trust is based primarily on our capacity tomanufacture reinforced bearings that aresuited to the specific uses and demandingconditions of agricultural work – soil, dust,humidity, heavy loads, etc. "We considerlonger service life and reliable quality of thebearings to be a major asset", says SébastienMeyer, purchasing coordinator at KUHN. Forexample NTN-SNR produces the TwinLinemodel for KUHN, which is integrated in theirmowers. "The TwinLine bearing, which wasdeveloped out of the automobile sector,provides an excellent technical basis that wasmodified and brought up to meet the level ofrequirements of KUHN mowers", says Jean-Michel Hee, Manager of Agricultural Sales atNTN-SNR.

SMART AGRICULTURAL MACHINESAnother factor in added value: innovation."Particularly the capacity of our main suppliersto remain one step ahead of technologicalprogress, to be proactive" says SébastienMeyer. KUHN and NTN-SNR rely on their 40year relationship of trust in order to makeprogress together. "We meet the KUHN staffonce a month to review current projects andplan for any requirements" explains Jean-Michel Hee. This is also an occasion to discusssmart agricultural machinery that makes fulluse of onboard electronic resources. "This is amajor area of our R&D and one of the keys tomeeting the significant increase in fooddemands", concludes Jean-Christophe Haas.

T he engines of Airbus A350 XWB will beequipped with NTN Corp bearings. Thisis the result of the sales agreement si-

gned at the Le Bourget Air Show in June 2013with the Rolls-Royce engine manufacturer. Theagreement is for the supply of bearings for theTrent XWB engine that powers the future long-haul Airbus. The A350 XWB, which had its firsttest flight last June, is due to be brought intocommercial service by the end of 2014.

This first contract with Rolls-Royce acknow-ledges the aeronautical expertise of NTNCorp., which is now one of the main enginemanufacturers in the sector. Created in 1995, the Fenasucro exhibi-tion in São Paulo (Brazil) has becomean unmissable event for professionals

in the sugar industry. The 2013 exhibition,which took place from 27th to 30th August,drew industry players from some forty coun-tries. As usual the NTN-SNR team was fullymobilised, welcoming no less than 1320 visi-tors to its stand, where they were able to dis-cover our new products and services and in

particular the new ULTAGE range. "Our custo-mers are in contact with our distributors throu-ghout the year. Fenasucro is a specialopportunity for meeting them face to face",stresses Tiago Boldt, NTN-SNR marketing as-sistant. From harvesting to processing via refi-ning, the sugar industry is highly mechanised,and therefore a strategic sector for NTN-SNRin Brazil.

S everal regional conventions brought to-gether NTN-SNR distributors in 2013to strengthen partnerships, spot

opportunities, launch new products, etc. Overtwenty partners attended the conventions inKrakow (Poland) from 17th to 19th June for thecentral European sectors and in Copenhagen(Denmark) on 16th October for the Scandinaviancountries. These events, which are coordina-ted by our local commercial staff, attract experts from head office who come to presenta number of innovations such as the ULTAGE-high-performance industrial bearings (see article p. 8). "These products, which have in-creased resistance and are longer lasting,

make us more competitive in the mining, ironand steel, wood and paper industries" explai-ned Bjorn Sundin and Kim Jeppesen, NTN-SNR sales representatives for the Northerncountries. "Whether for automobile spares or

in industry, NTN-SNR boasts many assets incentral Europe: we are aiming for 30% growthper year" said Jaroslaw Rudzinski, NTN-SNRManager of Poland.

Distributor conventions to focus on growth

By opening an office in Dubai in early2013, NTN-SNR clearly stated its objectives in the Arabian Peninsula. Inaddition to the port and oil infrastruc-tures, sectors such as the manufactureof materials and transport offer genuinepotential in terms of industrial mainte-nance.

T o strengthen its presence in the MiddleEast NTN-SNR opened an office inDubai (United Arab Emirates) in spring

2013. The aim is to eventually have a staff offive: "The fact of being on the ground makes iteasier to grasp the market requirements andto give our distributors in the region effectivesupport" explains Michel Peltier, Sales Mana-ger at the Dubai office.

CONSTRUCTION MATERIALSThe development opportunities for NTN-SNRlie mainly in industrial installation maintenance.Even though oil and gas may be the economicdriving force behind the region, other sectorsalso provide openings. This is true of suppliersof construction materials used on the mainwork sites (see text box). "Saudi Arabia has noless than 10 steelworks and 30 cement works.And each Emirate has its speciality. Fujairah,to the east, for example, focuses on miningand quarry work" added Michel Peltier. The re-gion also includes several manufacturers ofaluminium (Dubal, Emal, Aluminium Bahrain),some of which is used in construction.

The Middle East is also continuing to developits transport and logistics infrastructures. Saudi

Arabia is currently building over 1,400 kilometresof railways, including a very high-speed linebetween Medina, Jeddah and Mecca. "Theseprojects will generate considerable demand forspare parts for rolling stock" emphasised Mi-chel Peltier. The port centre in Dubai, whichwas created in the 1970s, has become a regional commercial hub and the eighth largestport in the word in terms of number of contai-ners. "Our ranges include bearings that arehighly suited to maintaining these infrastruc-tures: cranes, bridges, elevators, etc.", saysMichel Peltier.

RELIABILITYThe on-site staff have very definite priorities: tohelp the distributors defend the quality of NTN-SNR bearings in the face of competition from

low-cost products from emerging countries."Local manufacturers are very keen on the re-liability of European and Japanese products",added Michel Peltier.

NTN-SNR supports distributors on the groundwhen they visit customers and prospects, giving them technical expertise and sales do-cumentation. "Simple things that our competi-tors sometimes overlook" says Michel Peltier.The staff also organise conferences attendedby 100 to 150 people, both distributors andcustomers, to discuss quality, maintenanceand lubrication in the presence of technical ex-perts. "This type of American-style event isvery fashionable here. It's very interactive, youcan meet players in the sector who are given agreat deal of useful information", concludesMichel Peltier.

In recent months NTN-SNR has already hadthree successes in the region in several sec-tors, namely procurement contracts for repla-cement bearings with Qatar Petroleum (drillingand extraction), Dubal (aluminium manufactu-ring, 5,000 staff based in Dubai) and Drydocks(naval maintenance in the Port of Dubai).

DPETRODOLLARS TO FINANCE MAJOR INTERNATIONAL EVENTSTaller, bigger, more audacious… since the1990s the countries in the Arabian Peninsulahave multiplied large-scale developments aspart of the shift in their economy towardstourism and commerce. The iconic Al-Faisa-liah Tower and Kingdom Tower in Riyad(Saudi Arabia), Burj Khalifa Tower (828 m –the highest in the world), Burj Al-Arab Hoteland artificial Palm Islands in Dubai to namebut a few. The countries in the area are increasinglycommitted to organizing events on an inter-national scale featuring new infrastructures.Dubai will be home to the 2020 World Expoand Qatar will host the World Cup in 2022.

NTN-SNR AND INDUSTRY IN THE MIDDLE EASTNTN-SNR is currently concentrating its de-velopment in the Middle East on industrialmaintenance in the Arabian Peninsula. Thetwo countries with the greatest potential inthis area are Saudi Arabia and the UnitedArab Emirates. The commercial zone also ex-tends to Bahrain, Egypt, Kuwait, Qatar, Iraq,Iran (currently under an international em-bargo) and Oman.

With longer service life, increased loadcapacity, reduced maintenance costs, theULTAGE range of spherical roller bearingscreates a new performance standard forindustrial applications in extreme envi-ronments.

In May 2013 NTN-SNR launched ULTAGE, anew range of spherical roller bearings inten-ded for the most severe environments of the

industry (iron and steel, transmissions, cementworks, paper mills, mines and quarries, etc.)to replace its Premier range "With the ULTAGErange we have taken a major step forward inimproving equipment performance and pro-ductivity, withstanding high temperatures andsevere vibration levels" says Yann Genty, Pro-duct Manager at NTN-SNR.The optimised dimensions of Ultage bearingsmean it has one of the best load capacities onthe market as well as being very compact. Italso stands out due to its high rotation speedand low energy and lubricant consumption.The use of extremely pure steels together with

heat treatments that ensure dimensional sta-bility up to 200°C result in service life that istwice as long and reduced maintenance costs.

UP TO 650 MM BY 2016With bearings of between 52 mm and 420 mmexternal diameter, the ULTAGE range meetsmost of the sector's needs – "the label will beextended to 650 mm by 2016" says YannGenty. It also includes sealed bearings for applications that must prevent seepage frompollution, such as elevator transmissions. ULTAGE bearings can be assembled directlyin SNC plummer blocks, which are optimisedto improve vibration resistance and incorpo-rate the Ready Booster single point lubricator.

Performance that exceeds all expectations

Dylico2: is the name of an innovativesoftware developed internally by NTN-SNR that has been in use since May

2013. "It accurately measures the impact thevarious bearings have on the CO2 emissions ofa vehicle. And, for example, to simulate thecarbon footprints of a car depending on themodels of bearing used" explains Marc Paquien,innovation project leader at NTN-SNR and thedesigner of Dylico2. For car manufacturers thesoftware is an innovative, valuable source of

information. Considerable financial, commer-cial and environmental issues are at stake inreducing CO2 emissions from exhausts. "It iscurrently the main issue in automobile R&D"says Marc Paquien. Dylico2, which is currentlyused on an individual basis at the request ofthe NTN-SNR design offices, has thereforestirred up great interest. Many manufacturershave requested appointments either for a specific presentation of the software or to haveit included in current projects. In order to

strengthen bonds with customers there is no-thing better than turning one of their majorchallenges into added value.

Since 2013 NTN-SNR has marketed acomplete range of auxiliary belts, whichare sold individually. The catalogue in-

cludes over 700 references including trapezoi-dal, multi-v and multi-v stretch, etc. whichcover 96% of the automobile range. "We haveintentionally limited the tolerance of the lengthof our belts to ensure a high level of reliability"says Christophe Espine, Marketing Managerfor automobile spare parts. For optimal mana-

gement of the catalogue, the referencing incorporates four items of information: producttype, number of grooves, belt type and length.Distributor customers are also entitled to salesassistance resources. With this offer NTN-SNRis widening its current range of accessories –rollers, kits, dampers and pulleys for alterna-tors – on the spare parts market.

AUXILIARY BELTS

A new range of 700 references

For the third year running NTN-SNR is par-ticipating in the "Elige calidad, eligeconfianza", campaign organised in Spain

to promote brands that guarantee original qua-lity in independent automotive aftermarket.Sixteen original equipment manufacturers,suppliers that provide manufacturers with original equipment, are taking part: ATE,Bosch, Brembo, Dayco, Gates, Hella, KYB,Mann, NTN-SNR, Philips, SKF, Textar, TRW,Valeo, Varta and VDO. The aim is to make dis-tributors, and through them garage ownersand their customers, aware of the advantagesof choosing premium-brand spare parts. "Wewant to help consumers opt for quality and

trust in full awareness of the facts" said JoséManuel Sancho, Manager of Automobile SpareParts at NTN-SNR Ibérica.The campaign is not limited to Spain. In FranceNTN-SNR communicates on original qualitythrough humorous ads in the press. The groupbelongs to several professional associations oforiginal equipment manufacturers (FEDA, FIGIEFA or VREI in Germany) or garage owners(FNAA) that organise campaigns in manycountries, as well as the World Bearing Asso-ciation that fights infringement. NTN-SNR isalso very aware of the "Right to Repair" approach which promotes original quality, par-ticularly in the United States.

AUTOMOBILE SPARE PARTS

NTN-SNR defends original quality

Combining pleasant driving and ecofriendliness: this was the challengePeugeot and Total took up with the 208

HYbrid FE, a "Technological Demonstrator"presented last September at the Frankfurt au-tomobile trade fair in Germany. This urban hybrid vehicle, which is equipped with a three-cylinder, 1.2 litre, 68 h.p. engine and a 30 kWelectric engine, boasts surprising performance:it consumes 1.9 litre/100 km, emits 46 g ofCO2/km – half as much as a 208 1.0 VTi – andcan accelerate from 0 to 100 km/h in 8 se-conds – virtually like a 208 GTI!

NEW CONCEPTTo achieve these staggering results the Peu-geot Sports staff who led the project put theirexperience with car racing to good use. The208 HYbrid FE weighs 20% less than a stan-dard production model, despite the hybrid engine and battery (25 kg, total 40 kg of elec-tric hybrid system). The modifications to the bodywork and the use of cameras instead ofrear-view mirrors improve its aerodynamiccoefficient (SCx) by 25 %.

Peugeot and Total entrusted NTN-SNR withthe bearings. "For the 208 HYbrid FE we developed a wheel bearing concept which reduces weight by between 0.5 and 1 kg perwheel depending on the knuckle design" explains Vincent Pourroy-Solari, Automotive innovation manager at NTN-SNR. This newconcept also offers an optimised internal design to reduce friction and reduce assemblytime. For the 208 HYbrid FE the bearing is fitted with ceramic balls, similar to certain products intended for racing cars or aeronautics. Total also contributed by developing a new lubricant designed to reduce friction.

2 %* LESS CO2 EMISSIONThe NTN-SNR engineers also used their expertise in the choice and assembly of stan-dard bearings equipping the gearbox, cams-haft and high-pressure fuel pump. Lastly, NTNTransmissions Europe (NTE), a subsidiary ofthe NTN group, supplied two reduced-weighttransmissions specially designed for the 208HYbrid FE. NTN-SNR managed to reduce theoverall weight of the vehicle by 6.6 kg. "Consi-

dering the reduction in weight and friction, ourcontribution results in 1.7 to 2.8 g less CO2 /kmdepending on the reference in question. That'sthe equivalent of 2% emissions by a 208 standard production model" explains VincentPourroy-Solari.

Participation in this unusual project created aunique opportunity for NTN-SNR to test newinnovative solutions that will eventually result innew products.* estimated value.

Peugeot and Total presented a town car with outstanding characteristics at theFrankfurt automobile trade fair: the 208 HYbrid FE. NTN-SNR contributed to theproject by developing a new wheel bearing concept.

I n 2011 NTN-SNR adopted an overall approach to energy saving. "Several localinitiatives have been taken in the last ten

years. We have changed gear by adopting aformal methodology to be implemented in allthe plants" explains Jean-Hervé Bulit, NTN-SNR Environment Manager.

This means we faced considerable challenges.The energy consumption of the NTN-SNRplants – electricity and natural gas for produc-tion purposes and to heat the premises – isequivalent to a French town of 21,000 inhabi-tants at a cost of around 10 million euros ayear.

ENERGY DIAGNOSISThe Seynod 3 site (near Annecy, France) where115 staff work producing automobile bearingswas chosen as a "laboratory" for this energysaving plan. "The size and modern equipmentin the plant mean that it concentrates many ofthe characteristics of our production works-hops in the world" says Jean-Hervé Bulit. In2011 an energy diagnosis was performed inthe plant to measure consumption accuratelyand assess the impact of the various improve-ments that might be envisaged.

The diagnosis was used as a basis to draw upa list of operations to be conducted in eachplant: adjust the need for compressed air withthe latest compressors, use of variable speeddriven pumps to alter the lubricant flow, map-ping the temperatures in the workshop to manage heat production. Implementation ofthe various operations in 2012 on French sitesreduced the group's energy costs by 2%. In2013, 129 campaigns were launched in all thegroup's factories (France, Italy, Romania, Brazil) with the aim of reducing consumptionby 4%.

DETECTING ANY DRIFTSThe Seynod 3 workshop remains one stepahead. In early 2013 it was equipped with anEnergy Management and Information System(EMIS) that monitors the individual consump-tion of each item of equipment – furnaces, boi-ler, compressor – and buildings. The systemmeasures the savings made, detects driftsover time, analyses consumption according toworkload and temperatures for the purpose offuture improvements. "Systems of this type areused on the group's other sites" says Jean-Hervé Bulit. They will eventually be used to ma-nage the workshops, taking into considerationenergy consumptions in real time.

Over 20,000 wind turbines are brought into service each year. These enormous machines, which can be over 100 metres tall, operate using wind… and around fifteen ball bearing units.

Most of them equip the "multiplier" u, that increases the speed of the blade rotation: thereare ten or so with a diameter of between 30 and 70 centimetres. The two bearings of thegenerator v, which transform the mechanical movement into electricity, can measure asmuch as thirty centimetres.With the bearings of the main shaft w, which holds the blades, everything is on a monu-mental scale: the parts are often over 1 metre in diameter but may be over 3 metres on verypowerful machines. Wind turbines also use four slewing rings, which are very similar to bearings – NTN-SNR produces them in its factory in Korea. Three of the rings x direct theblades according to the wind direction and the fourth connects the nacelle to the pillary. The nacelle on certain wind turbines in the sea may measure over 4 metres in diameter!
