Detailed analysis of Marmozets - Born Young and Free Editing In the music video the main editing that is used mostly all the way through the video is fast pace. This is conventional for a rock music video because it fits in with the song being a fast song. The editing slows down at about 2:16-2:34 when the song slows down and the main singer in the band screams a part of the song. By only slowing this part down makes it conventional because it fits in with the lyrics ‘we don’t care’ as they are just taking the moments as they come and not really wanted to ‘grow up’ quickly as they are born ‘young and free’. Shot reverse shot is used when the music starts after the first two clips, these are too show all five band members before the lead singer starts to sing. This is conventional because it helps the audience to address who everyone is and what they are doing before the song starts. Mise-en-scene The setting of the music video is very conventional for a rock music genre because it has very low key lighting with just a tiny bit of natural light coming from a hole in the celling where they are ‘trapped’. The use of low key lighting is conventional for a rock music video because the songs aren’t meant to have happy and cheery meanings like pop music in the charts and by adding the low key lighting too this shows a clear contrast between rock and pop music which is stereotypical for the genre. Also the set design of the video is very conventional for a rock music video because it is an underground type place where there looks like there is no way out. This is conventional because it fits

Detailed analysis of Marmozets - Born Young and Free

Editing

In the music video the main editing that is used mostly all the way through the video is fast pace.

Mise-en-scene

The setting of the music video is very conventional for a rock music genre because it has very low key lighting with just a tiny bit of natural light coming from a hole in the celling where they are ‘trapped’. The use of low key lighting is conventional for a rock music video because the songs aren’t meant to have happy and cheery meanings like pop music in the charts and by adding the low key lighting too this shows a clear contrast between rock and pop music which is stereotypical for the genre. Also the set design of the video is very conventional for a rock music video because it is an underground type

place where there looks like there is no way out. This is conventional because it fits in with the dark clothing and the connotations of mystery. The use of props helps to fit in with the convention of genre because they are performing with the instruments, and the use of using the correct musical instruments helps to identify who plays which in the band. But it is also stereotypical because it fits with the fact that they are performing. Also the use of costume is stereotypical

for a rock music video, this is because all throughout the video all 5 band members are wearing dark clothing. This is stereotypical because dark clothing connotes death and mystery, this makes the costume conventional for a rock music video because it fits in with the way that rock musicians are seen by society as always wearing dark clothing. Also the costume helps to show what kind of age that they are aiming their music video at, which is teenagers as these are the clothing that people who listen to rock music stereotypically wear all the time. Another example of lighting is key

lighting. This is conventional for a rock music video because it shows the band member in the shadows and this represents the character to be mysterious and because all the auidence can see is black it is conventional because black connotes death and mystery.

Camerawork

In the music video there are a lot of close ups used. The close ups show a variety of things such as; the main singers face when she is singing and also the show close ups of the musical instruments that are being played by the other band members. These are conventional because the close up on the lead singer help to show the emotion about the lyrics she is singing and also helps with the narrative to show how much emotion she has about what she is singing, which is stereotypical because all rock musicians are seen to be very emotional and care about the lyrics they are singing about. Also there is a use of a low angle of the lead singer. This shows that she is powerful and kind of signifies the fact that she is the lead singer because none of the other band members have a low angle of them. This helps the audience to see which band member is the main one in the band. Also in the video there are a lot of mid shots used, these are conventional for a rock music video because it shows the musicians costume and some of their surroundings which helps the audience to get a feel for what it would be like to be in their situation.

Long shots are used towards the start of the video and these show the lead singer in an arch way in very low key lighting and shows that there is just walls all around her. This is conventional because it makes the audience wonder why she is there.

Conventions of genre

The narrative of this music video is conventional for a rock music video because the shots nearer to the end of the video fit in with the lyrics that the lead singer is singing. These are; ‘We can go wherever we want cos we're free yeah we're free’. When the lyrics are being played the whole of the band are together for the first time in the music video and they are running because they are free. This helps with the narrative because it suggests that they are no longer trapped inside wherever they are and they are now free to go wherever they like. The music video is also conventional for conventions of genre because they are doing a performance at the same time. A section in the video is of them performing it has all of the five band members with all their instruments. This is conventional because it has them using their instruments and isn’t a scripted dance piece that would usually be found in a pop music video and helps again to show that contrast between the two genres of music.

Conventions of form

Page 3: Detailed analysis

In the music video lip sinking is used all throughout the video when he lead singer is in the shot, this is conventional for the form because it is a music video and in every music video there is always lip sinking whether it be a pop, rock or country music video. So this makes the video conventional to be a music video because they have their lead singer lip sinking to their song. Also to make the video conventional for a music video Marmozets lyrics fit in with narrative that they have. This is because their lyrics are about being young and free and being able to go wherever they want to, and this is shown by them looking like they have no were to get out because all of the lighting comes from the celling because they are underground and there are bars on the windows so that they ant get out, which contradicts the lyrics at first. But that by the end they are ‘breaking free’ and running away from where they were at the start and are all together for the first time. Also the lyrics ‘Shake the dust of your feet and show them who's best’ fit in with the set design because they are in an underground dirty place, and also they are ‘shaking the dust off’ because they are ‘moshing’ around in the places that they are in.

Sound

In the music video lip sinking is used all throughout the video. This is conventional for the form because all music videos have lip inking in them. The lip sinking is from the backing track of the song that will be played over the clips. Also the sound from the backing track fits in with the editing of the video, which is fast pace, this is conventional for a rock music video because if the song was still the fast paced song and had slow editing the song wouldn’t have the same effect that fast pace editing does.
