Ford’s efforts to provide thepublic with electric vehicles areproducing results.
The new Ford Escape Plug-InHybrid now has a best-in-classEPA-estimated economy rating of100 MPGe combined and an EPA-estimated 37 miles of all-electricdriving range, said Has Thai-Tang, Ford chief product devel-opment and purchasing officer.
MPGe, or miles per gallon ofgasoline equivalent, is an Envi-ronmental Protection Agencymetric to compare the amount ofenergy consumed by alternativefuel vehicles – including thosepartially powered by electricity, like the Ford Escape Plug-In Hy-brid – to what traditional gas-powered vehicles consume.
“The original Ford Escape wasthe world’s first hybrid SUV andthe all-new Ford Escape Plug-inHybrid represents how far we’vecome in technology and efficien-cy,” said Thai-Tang. “The all-newEscape plug-in has more powerand more passenger space thanthe Fusion Energi plug-in, as wellas up to four times the cargo vol-ume behind its second-rowseats.”
Hybrids can serve as a hedgeagainst rising gas prices. The Es-cape Plug-In Hybrid is availableas gas prices are expected torise, according to AAA, followingthe easing of stay-at-home man-dates across the country. As con-sumers begin returning to workand taking weekend trips, de-mand for gasoline is expected tospike from the decades-lowprices of the past two months.
Whether gas is $1.87 a gallonlike today or $2.87 a gallon likethis time last year, Escape Plug-In Hybrid is suited for both, withan EPA-estimated all-electricrange of 37 miles and an EPA-es-timated rating of 41 miles pergallon combined when runningstrictly on gasoline.
“The economic and environ-mental impacts of this virushave created a roller coaster forconsumers looking to balance
value, need and efficiency goingforward,” Thai-Tang said. “FordEscape Plug-In Hybrid is that ide-al balance our customers want.”
In addition to potential sav-ings at the pump, Escape Plug-InHybrid starts under $35,000MSRP.
The Escape Plug-In Hybrid ispart of Ford’s investment ofmore than $11.5 billion in electri-fied vehicles. This Escape fea-tures Ford’s innovative fourth-
generation hybrid propulsionsystem, which includes an all-new 2.5-liter Atkinson cycle hy-brid engine and electronic con-tinuously variable transmission. The plug-in hybrid system isavailable on every Escape trimlevel except S and SE Sport.
The Escape Plug-In Hybrid hasplenty of room for passengersand cargo, said Thai-Tang,

The 2021 Chrysler Pacifica has smart system that gives drivers for the first time a minivan with AWD.
There’s good news for fans ofthe Chrysler Pacifica minivan, said Tim Kuniskis.
The newly redesigned 2021Chrysler Pacifica will deliver all-wheel-drive (AWD) capability, combined with a fresh new lookand feel and the most standardsafety features of any vehicle inthe industry, when it hits dealer-ships later this year, but AWD isarriving early for those who justcan’t wait, said Kuniskis, globalhead of Alfa Romeo and head ofPassenger Cars – Dodge, SRT,Chrysler and FIAT, FCA – NorthAmerica.
Dealers can now order the2020 Chrysler Pacifica AWDLaunch Edition, making the all-weather-capable, seamless andfully automatic AWD systemavailable for the current model-year Pacifica.
“Reaction was overwhelming-
ly positive when we announcedthat the new 2021 Chrysler Paci-fica will offer AWD capability,”said Kuniskis. “We know there isdemand for AWD capabilityalong with Stow ‘n Go seating, and the 2020 Chrysler PacificaAWD Launch Edition allows usto get our customers the all-weather capability they wanteven sooner.

General Motors has designat-ed $10 million to support organi-zations that promote inclusionand racial justice.
An initial $1 million will go tothe NAACP Legal Defense andEducational Fund (LDEF), saidGM spokesman Pat Morrissey.
Recipients of additional fund-ing will be determined with inputfrom GM’s Employee ResourceGroups (ERGs) and the recentlyannounced GM Inclusion Adviso-ry Board (IAB).
GM’s IAB will consist of lead-ers from inside and outside thecompany, with the goal of mak-ing GM the most inclusive com-pany in the world. GM Chairmanand CEO Mary Barra will chairthe IAB, Morrissey said.
As part of the $10 million, theGM program includes the oppor-tunity for employees to give toorganizations and a corporatematching of those employee con-tributions. Program details willbe distributed to employeeswhen finalized.
“Through today’s donations,GM is taking action in helpingroot out intolerance – and thatmeans racism, bigotry, discrimi-nation and any other form of ha-tred,” said Barra. “We want to bepart of meaningful, deliberatechange and we will not allowourselves the passivity of urgingothers to act. We are taking ac-tion.”

model, is equipped with thesame AWD system that will beoffered on the redesigned 2021Chrysler Pacifica, Kuniskis said.Pacifica is the only vehicle in thesegment, he said, capable oftransferring all available enginetorque to the rear wheels, orwhichever wheels have moreavailable traction. The Pacifica AWD system is al-
so able to sense and stop thedrive shaft from spinning whenAWD is not required, a class-ex-clusive feature in the segmentthat improves efficiency, saidKuniskis. The AWD Launch Edition also
will include 235/60-R18 MichelinPremier self-sealing tires.The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica
AWD Launch Edition is availablenow for ordering at Chryslerdealerships in the United Statesand Canada, said Kuniskis. The U.S. manufacturer’s sug-
gested retail price (MSRP) of$40,240, excluding destinationfees, includes the AWD LaunchEdition package MSRP of $3,095.The 2020 Chrysler Pacifica AWDLaunch Edition is scheduled toarrive in dealerships in the thirdquarter of 2020.The Chrysler brand continues
to work to make things financial-ly easier for all families withavailable Chrysler Pacifica Fami-ly Pricing, Kuniskis said.Consumers also now have the
option to shop and purchasenew vehicles from the comfortof their own homes through theOnline Retailing Experience(ORE). ORE has been imple-mented by more than 90 percentof the FCA U.S. dealer network, using web-based tools to sellcars and trucks via the internet.Chrysler Pacifica is the most
awarded minivan over the lastfour years with more than 135honors and industry accolades, said Kuniskis.“The Chrysler brand heard
the call from its customers forAWD and answered with a newsystem that helps Pacifica own-ers haul people and thingsthrough all types of weather – beit rain or snow,” he said.America’s only minivan to of-
fer AWD along with Stow ‘n Go
seating, he said, the availablesystem delivers enhanced trac-tion in a wide range of drivingand road conditions – from drypavement to snow-coveredroads to non-paved surfaces –and engages seamlessly at anyspeed without the need of driveractivation.
The Chrysler Pacifica’s AWDsystem – the first available in aChrysler minivan since 2004 –uses mechanical and electronictechnology proven durable andcapable on FCA vehicles, saidKuniskis. In addition, he said, the system was put through itspaces, with more than 1 millioncustomer-driven-equivalentmiles of testing prior to intro-duction.Key mechanical components
of the Chrysler Pacifica AWDsystem include a Power TransferUnit (PTU), which splits torquefrom the nine-speed automatictransmission and routes it to therear-drive module. Also, he said, the three-piece
Drive Shaft connects the PTUand the rear-drive module. Evenwith the additional drivelinecomponents, the Chrysler Pacifi-ca AWD retains its second-rowStow ‘n Go seating storage. The rear-drive module houses
an electronically controlled wetclutch that manages torque torear wheels and a second-gener-ation one-speed drive moduleoptimized for weight and low-speed drag torque reduction.Other mechanical changes re-
sulting in improved driving dy-namics, said Kuniskis, include
the addition of a rear sway barand revised tuning for the frontand rear suspension. Ride heightis increased 0.78 inches (20 mil-limeters).Pacifica’s fully automatic AWD
system is the only one in thesegment, Kuniskis said, capableof transferring 100 percent ofthe available engine torque tothe rear wheels, or whicheverwheels have more available trac-tion.The Pacifica AWD system, the
most capable AWD in the class,is also able to sense and stopthe drive shaft from spinningwhen AWD is not required, aclass-exclusive feature in thesegment that improves efficien-cy, Kuniskis said.
The AWD system also employsa brake-lock differential systemto help enhance traction, withfully automatic torque distribu-tion between each wheel. If onewheel on an axle loses traction, the system applies the brake tothe low-traction wheel, redirect-ing torque through the differen-tial to the wheel with more trac-tion.The 18-inch brake package for
AWD features larger vented frontand solid rear rotors andcalipers with more capacity. The AWD system engages au-
tomatically, based on a varietyof sensor inputs that signalwhen enhanced traction is bene-ficial. For best traction perform-ance, AWD is engaged when the
Chrysler Pacifica begins to ac-celerate from a standing stop.Other inputs that signal AWD en-gagement include cold exteriortemperature, use of windshieldwipers, slip detected at the frontwheels, heavy acceleration atcertain vehicle speeds (such asovertaking during passing), elec-tronic stability control activa-tion, abrupt steering or suddenthrottle inputs and rough roadconditions/grades.When the Chrysler Pacifica’s
drivetrain detects that AWD isnot needed, it disconnects thePTU and rear-drive module auto-matically to stop the drive shaftfrom spinning, reducing drive-line drag and improving efficien-cy, said Kuniskis.

thanks to the smart placementof its liquid-cooled, 14.4-kilo-watt-hour lithium-ion batterybelow the second-row seats, rather than occupying a signifi-cant portion of the cargo area.Escape Plug-In Hybrid has a
Level 1/Level 2 AC chargingport. Using a 110-volt Level 1charger, the estimated time tofully charge the battery is 10 to11 hours. Using a 240-volt Level2 charger, charge time drops toroughly 3.5 hours.Hybrid models feature four
modes that allow customers toselect the setting most suitablefor their individual needs. Thismeans in Auto EV mode, the ve-hicle decides whether to run ongas or electric power.
In EV Now mode, drivers canoperate on all-electric power, whereas in EV Later mode, driv-ers can switch to full gas-hybriddriving to conserve electricmiles for later. In the new EV Charge mode,
drivers can continue to chargethe battery while driving andgenerate electric-only miles touse later.Escape comes standard with
Ford Co-Pilot360 and offersavailable Ford Co-Pilot360 As-sist+ features such as AdaptiveCruise Control with Stop-and-Goand Lane-Centering, EvasiveSteering Assist, and a voice-activated navigation systemwith SiriusXM Traffic and TravelLink. HONG KONG (AP) – China’s au-to sales surged 14.5 percent inMay, a second straight month ofgrowth as the global industry’sbiggest market gradually recov-ers from the coronavirus pan-demic.The China Association of Auto-
mobile Manufacturers (CAAM)said June 11 that sales of passen-ger cars jumped 7 percent from ayear earlier to 1.67 million, an im-provement over April’s 2.6 per-cent contraction.Growth in passenger vehicles
was primarily driven by sales ofSUVs and minivans, whichjumped nearly 20 percent and 47percent respectively from thesame period the year before, ac-cording to CAAM figures.Passenger vehicle sales tum-

mered by the coronavirus pan-demic and worries over the slow-ing economy and a possible re-vival of trade tensions with theU.S.Sales plunged 81.7 percent in
February at the height of thecoronavirus outbreak, as dealer-ships and other businesses wereshut down to contain outbreaksof the virus that have since large-ly subsided.Prolonged weakness in a once
sizzling market has hamstrungglobal automakers looking toChina to drive revenue growth.Sales fell 9.6 percent last year, their second straight annual de-cline.China’s government started re-
opening factories, restaurantsand stores in March after declar-ing victory over the COVID-19outbreak.But rising job losses and fears
of a second wave of coronavirusinfections have left consumerswary of making big purchases ofthings like automobiles.
The downturn is squeezingbrands that are investing billionsof dollars to develop electric ve-hicles under pressure to meetgovernment sales targets.May sales of battery-powered
and gasoline-electric hybrid vehi-cles fell 23.5 percent from a yearago in May to 82,000.For the first five months of the
year, sales slumped 38.7 percentto 289,000.Demand for electric vehicles
weakened last year after Beijingreduced subsidies that helped tomake China their biggest market, accounting for half of globalsales. The government said in April it
will extend subsidies through2020 to shore up sales.Following the announcement,
Volkswagen said last month thatit would spend 2 billion euros($2.3 billion) to expand its pres-ence in China’s electric car in-dustry, by buying control of itselectric car venture in China andinvesting in a battery producer.

DETROIT (AP) – A former presi-dent of the United Auto Workerspleaded guilty June 3 to conspir-ing with others to embezzle duesto pay for golf trips, expensivemeals and stays at California vil-las – the most significant convic-tion yet in a scandal that hasroiled the union.Gary Jones, who appeared by
video in federal court in Detroit, acknowledged that he falsified ex-penses from 2012 to 2017 whenhe was a regional UAW director inSt. Louis. He was promoted topresident in 2018 but quit after 17months as the federal investiga-tion intensified.Ten union officials and a late of-
ficial’s spouse have pleadedguilty since 2017, although not allthe crimes were connected. Thefirst wave of convictions, whichincluded some Fiat Chrysler em-ployees, involved money from aFiat Chrysler-UAW training centerin Detroit.Jones, 63, pleaded guilty to two
counts of conspiracy in the use ofmore than $1 million.“I apologize to my UAW family
for the betrayal of their trust andpray they’ll forgive me,’’ Jonessaid in court, quoting the Bible ashe also apologized to his personalfamily.Guidelines call for a sentence of
46 to 57 months in prison. But As-sistant U.S. Attorney David
Gardey said the governmentcould ask for a lighter punish-ment on Oct. 6 if Jones provides“substantial assistance,’’ a signalthat investigators aren’t finished. The UAW, based in Detroit, has
about 400,000 members and isbest known for representingworkers at Fiat Chrysler, GeneralMotors and Ford Motor.Jones and other officials set up
accounts that were supposed tobe used for legitimate union con-ference expenses in California. In-stead, according to the govern-ment, they used the money to payfor “private villas, high-end liquorand meal expenses, golfing appar-el, golf clubs and green fees.’’The UAW vigorously defended
Jones, even criticizing the govern-ment when agents searched hisDetroit-area home last August. But the support eventually faded.Jones “and others abused their
high-ranking positions and violat-ed the trust of our members.Their actions were selfish, im-moral, and against everything westand for as a union,’’ Rory Gam-ble, the current president, saidJune 3.U.S. Attorney Matthew Schnei-
der said he’s shifting his focus to“reforming the UAW’’ and wantsto meet with Gamble as soon aspossible. Separately, he told TheDetroit News that he’s talked tothe U.S. Justice Department abouta lawsuit that could lead to thegovernment taking control ofunion operations.
