“Trade fairs and networking are our passion. Ever since 1947, our event and service portfolio has been putting exhibitors in touch with all the right visitors. For many a small enterprise this has paved the way to global market leadership. And it has made all the difference for major corporations with their sights set on further expansion. And how may we help you to reach your objectives?”

Dr. Wolfram v. Fritsch Chairman of the Managing Board, Deutsche Messe

Growing need for real interactionIt may be the digital age, but some things never change – like the fact that decisions are made by people. So, while many manufacturer-customer interactions these days tend to be of the digital variety, there’s a growing need for real interaction and face-to-face dialogue. There’s no substitute for a good, firm handshake and the chance to try the product out, look the vendor in the eye and ask questions. And that’s precisely what our trade fairs are about – real encounters and real dialogue. They match investors with amazing ideas, tomorrow’s big challenges with today’s best minds, and business people with the best business opportunities.

From Industry 4.0 to IoT, we highlight megatrends in the makingOur shows are right on the mark. HANNOVER MESSE was the first trade fair to put the spotlight on Industry 4.0 (originally coined in Germany as “Industrie 4.0”), and CeBIT was the first to put the Internet of Things on center stage. Future-savvy and smart, our shows generate maximum exposure for your products and solutions.

Introduction: A bit about Deutsche Messe

With its unerring focus on business, CeBIT is the No. 1 event for the digital industries. Today’s hottest topic at CeBIT: the Internet of Things. But the show also highlights other trending topics such as virtual reality, artifi-

cial intelligence, drones, big data, security, cloud technologies, mobile solutions and social business, to name but a few. These accents are chosen for maximum market relevance, in close consultation with exhibitors and industry partners. This explains why the show annually attracts such a huge percentage of industry professionals. And speaking of relevance, CeBIT also features the visionary CeBIT Global Conferences, which always feature a star-studded lineup of speakers – names like Edward Snowden, Jeff Jarvis and Polly Summer spring to mind. CeBIT also offers a rich array of forums addressing specific technologies.

The future, “made in Hannover”At Deutsche Messe, we live and breathe trade fairs for capital goods. We tirelessly enhance and expand our tradeshow portfolio so our customers enjoy ever greater market reach and impact. By proactively anticipating market trends and our customers’ needs, we have created a powerful global lineup of more than 130 trade fairs drawing over 4 million attendees in total. These events are grouped by the core fields of expertise they address, namely: Industry, Energy, Logistics, ICT & Digital Business, Floor Coverings, Woodworking/Wood Processing. Added to the mix are a number of HR management and consumer shows. As a venue operator, we also host a variety of shows staged by third parties for certain industries, e.g. EMO (machine tools), AGRITECHNICA (agricultural machinery), IAA Nutzfahrzeuge (commer-cial vehicles) and EuroBLECH (sheet metal working).

Worldwide Network.Deutsche Messe around the globe.Promising opportunities in major growth marketsDeutsche Messe’s portfolio extends far beyond Germany’s borders, with many successful trade fairs also being staged in key growth markets the world over. For instance, our major tradeshow brands first established in Germany – CeBIT, HANNOVER MESSE, DOMOTEX and CeMAT – now have offshoots in other countries, each of which is a major market gateway in its own right. And with 55 agencies worldwide, we have a comprehensive global network and profound local insight into the markets of Europe, Asia, North and South America, Australia and the Middle East. Our organization thus offers lots of added value for some 15,000 exhibitors annually. We also partner with our local subsidiaries to provide exhibitors with professional tradeshow services in their own native tongues.

Top global marketplaces: attractive growth opportunities abroad

24 25

Powering business on six continents Deutsche Messe promotes and organizes trade fairs on all six continents. We’ve learned a thing or two in the process and are well positioned to open up new markets and new opportunities for our customers. By way of example, here are three success stories: in North America, China and Turkey.

Turkey: gateway to Southern Europe

Deutsche Messe was the first foreign tradeshow company to set up a local office in Turkey. Today, Hannover Fairs Turkey is Turkey’s biggest ‘non-native’ tradeshow operator, with a portfolio of some 20 events, most of them leaders in their fields. Turkey itself is one of the world’s fastest-growing energy markets, with a national energy require-ment forecast to double by 2023 on the back of rapid urbanization. Meeting this demand will require capital investment in the order of € 115 billion. That’s a hugely promising market, especially for suppliers of wind turbines, given that the country has so far tapped only 15 percent of its total wind energy potential. And where better for suppliers and infrastructure decision-makers to meet and make this investment happen than at ICCI, Turkey’s biggest and most important energy trade show?

New markets, new opportunities.Three success stories.

China: expansion in a dynamic market

Deutsche Messe has a big presence in Asia, with no fewer than 15  agencies. In China, our subsidiary Hannover Milano Fairs Shanghai annually stages about 20 trade shows addressing production, automo-bile manufacturing, automotive manufacturing and tourism. China’s automobile market is the biggest in the world and continues to enjoy solid growth. And it’s a market in which our subsidiary is well positi-oned with the Chengdu Motor show and the Wuhan Motor Show – two major events that together attract more than a million attendees. Our subsidiary also holds the country's leading tourism exhibitions: the Guangzhou International Travel Fair and the China Tourism Internatio-nal Commodities Fair. We’re also a major player in the floor coverings sector, thanks to DOMOTEX asia/CHINAFLOOR, the only international show covering this topic in the Asia-Pacific region.

North America: enabling business in the world’s biggest economy

The U.S. economy has been growing steadily – a trend that has been a boon for the country’s trade fair sector, which in 2015 saw its sharpest upswing in years. It all comes down to America’s renewed appetite for capital investment, particu-larly in production and manufacturing plant, machinery and electrical engineering solutions. We’ve had a presence in the USA since 1986 via our subsidiary Hannover Fairs USA. This partnership has produced several leading trade shows and conferences. We also have a subsidiary north of the border, Hannover Fairs Canada, which we set up in 2013. Keeping a close eye on market trends, we have expanded our North American tradeshow footprint in the industrial, manufacturing and energy sectors. For instance, in Canada there’s CanWEA and Solar Canada, and stateside there’s Industrial Automation, MDA, ComVac and SurfaceTechnology North America.

26 27

Benchmark in digital lead generationAs business enablers, we provide platforms that match supply with demand. Trade fairs, obviously, but digital platforms as well. We partner with our digital business subsidiaries Deutsche Messe Interactive and “event it” to develop services that match attendees with exhibitors 365 days a year. By integrating our online and offline offerings in this way, we are enhancing the power of our trade fairs as incubators of new business. This gives our customers the twin benefits of tailored digital lead generation and online tools for organizing and man-aging their tradeshow presentations.

Winning venues at your service:High standards from Germany to Asia.

▲ Hannover’s nightlife is vibrant and welcoming. Take your pick of tradi-tional German brewery bars, pubs, clubs and discos for an authentic Hannover-style night on the town.

A strong location at the very heart of EuropeHannover is a very cosmopolitan and welcoming kind of place, which is not surprising given that our trade fairs, events, and congresses annually bring in over two million visitors from around the world. The Hannover region also offers great economic diversity and strength. All of which makes it the perfect tradeshow location for virtually every industry and field of business. Together, Hannover and Deutsche Messe are a winning partnership, especially when it comes to trade fairs for capital goods.

Another major plus is that Hannover is supremely easy to get to. No other railway station has more trains stopping at it than Hannover Central Station, and when trade shows are on, the ICE bullet trains stop at the “Hannover Messe/Laatzen” station just a block away from the exhibition center. For road users, Hannover lies on a key intersection between Germany’s north-south and east-west arterial autobahn routes. What’s more, Hannover Airport offers daily service to all major European cities.

The city of Hannover and its environs offer a wealth of leisure options to enhance the effectiveness and fun factor of any tradeshow visit.

The city’s easy-going, cosmopolitan vibe is reflected in its restaurant and dining scene, which offers something for every taste and budget.▼

For a pleasant stay, our hospitality partner Hannover Marketing und Tourismus GmbH has around 15,000 rooms to choose from in and around Hannover. You can also opt for a “Deutsche Messe Selected Hotel” and enjoy certified tradeshow-friendly accommodation in over 80 hotels.

Space for ideas – with flexibility and great infrastructure to matchNo two events are the same, so why should the venue be? Deutsche Messe’s multi- func tional hall infrastructure means that it really can provide the right venue for every event. Our exhibition halls are at ground level and are almost entirely free-span. Add state-of-the-art building and technical systems, and you’ve got interior spaces that are endlessly configurable for multiple uses – everything from major international trade fairs to small one-day conferences. Hall 19/20 is a prime example, with its dedicated conference area and immediately adjacent exhibition space.

That’s the Hannover Exhibition Center. But if you’re exhibiting in Asia, we’ve got you covered there too. Together with our partners, we’ve been marketing exhibition space at the Shanghai New International Expo Centre (SNIEC) since 2001. And in Jakarta we’ve been operating the Indonesia Convention Exhibition (ICE), Indonesia’s biggest and most modern exhibition complex, since 2014.

Flexible infrastructure: the perfect setting for any event

A long tradition of milestones:The Deutsche Messe success story.

940s 950s960s 970s 980s

1947 Deutsche Messe- und Aus-stel lungs-AG is founded in Hannover. With the establishment of Deutsche Messe in Hannover, Germany’s first export fair is launched – only 17 weeks after the British occupation forces propose the idea. The event brings millions of dollars’ worth of badly needed investment into the war-damaged city. Visitors are de-lighted to be able to buy fish rolls at the fair – available for the first time since prewar times.

The Deutsche Messe logo is born: a stylized profile of Hermes, the Greek god of commerce, complete with winged helmet. It heralds Deutsche Messe’s very first export fair in 1947 and is still used today in marketing the company and its many events.

1981 The “infa” consumer fair was started back in the 1950s by Fach-ausstellungen Heckmann. Now, near-ly 30 years later, Deutsche Messe takes over Heckmann, acquiring Germany’s biggest browsing and shopping fair in the process.

1985 The 1980s see the emergence of a new scientific discipline: biotech-nology. Deutsche Messe responds with BIOTECHNICA, the international platform for networking between re-search and industry.

Deutsche Messe's overseas trade-show business flourishes, promp-ting the company to set up adedicated subsidiary for its for-eign activities: Hannover MesseInter national GmbH, later renamed Hannover Fairs International GmbH.

1986 The office technology sec-tor is the key focus of CeBIT, which is now split off from HANNOVER MESSE and becomes a standalone event. HANNOVER MESSE and CeBIT are the world’s leading trade fairs in their respective sectors.

1989 DOMOTEX is launched and from the outset stands out as the carpet and floor covering industry’s leading event. 531 exhibitors from around the globe travel to the pre-miere to present their handmade and machine-woven carpets. By 2016, the number of exhibitors will swell to some 1,500.

1950 Despite Germany’s political isolation, the export fair succeeds in attracting exhibitors from 10 differ-ent nations. Germany’s diplomats have not yet succeeded in restoring relations abroad, but trade fair re-presentatives manage to establish links to foreign partners, even set-ting up the first telephone line bet-ween the fairgrounds and New York.

1952 The opening of Hannover Airport makes life much easier, al-lowing Hannover and its tradeshow company to host participants from around the world. Guests who are really in a hurry can even take a helicopter or small plane from the airport to the fairgrounds.

1958 The Munich Hall at the World Exposition in Brussels is dis-mantled and reassembled at the Hannover exhibition center. With space for up to 3,200 guests, it is the biggest tradeshow restaurant worldwide, not to mention the most atmospheric. The Munich Hall offers authentic Bavarian fare in a genuine Oktoberfest setting.

1960 It’s the start of the sixties, and Hannover is drawing more than a million guests annually. Local ho-tels can’t keep up with the demand, so local residents kindly open their homes to visiting businesspeople, providing them with room and board.

1970 The rapidly growing of-fice and information technology trade fair that will one day become“CeBIT” – at this point still part of HANNOVER MESSE – gets its own dedicated hall. The new Hall 1 has 70,300 square meters of floor space (over 750,000 sq. feet – the size of about 10 soccer fields) – breaking all previous records and ultimately making it into the Guinness Book of Records as the world’s biggest exhi-bition hall.

1975 Like many other Deutsche Messe trade fairs, LIGNA started out as part of HANNOVER MESSE. But now manufacturers of wood-working machinery and forestry technology are taking up so much space that a separate trade fair is established to accommodate them. The split-off is successful and, to this day, LIGNA remains the world’s flagship fair for woodworking and wood processing machinery.

A long tradition of milestones:The Deutsche Messe success story.

990s 2000s 200s1992 Deutsche Messe chalks up two new additions to its portfolio of hosted events: IAA Commercial Vehicles and EuroBLECH. To this very day, they remain the leading trade fairs for their sectors and are each staged in Hannover every two years.

1996 Deutsche Messe breaks new ground by launching “GLOBIS,” the world’s first virtual trade fair. Visitors have access to product in-formation 365/24/7, revolutionizing the tradeshow industry. (Context: In the mid-1990s, e-mails cost 5 cents each and Germany’s biggest telco, Deutsche Telekom, charges for In-ternet access by the minute!). For the first time, the Internet also be-comes a major topic at CeBIT.

2000 During the run-up to the EXPO 2000 World’s Fair in Hanno-ver, Deutsche Messe invests heavily in infrastructure. Spending more than 1.6 billion D-mark, the compa-ny and public authorities modernize and expand the exhibition grounds and local mass transit infrastruc-ture. The wooden Expo Canopy is also erected. Hannover is now home to the world’s biggest and most mo-dern exhibition center.

2001 In partnership with the major tradeshow companies based in Düsseldorf and Munich, Deutsche Messe opens the Shanghai New International Expo Center (SNIEC), which will go on to become China’s leading exhibition venue within just a few years.

2008 To accelerate its own growth in key international mar-kets, Deutsche Messe teams up in a joint venture with Europe’s other leading exhibition company, Fiera Milano. The two companies aim to achieve faster growth in the dy-namic markets of Russia, China and India by leveraging each other’s market position and expertise.

2009 A new Deutsche Messe subsidiary is established: Deutsche Messe Interactive (DMI). It offersinnovative solutions in digital lead management.

2014 Deutsche Messe enters the Indonesian market by taking over the operation of the Indonesia Con-vention Exhibition (ICE) in Jakarta. With 250 million inhabitants, In-donesia is Southeast Asia’s biggest economy and one of the world’s most important growth markets.

2015 Digitalization takes center stage: Glenn Greenwald and Edward Snow den at the CeBIT Global Con-ferences. The highlight of the key-note CeBIT conference comes when Glenn Greenwald takes the stage in Hannover accompanied by whistle-blower Edward Snowden via live feed from Moscow. The live stream of the event is watched by 40,000 people worldwide.

2015 Building for the future – the exhibition center becomes even more modern and versatile. A ma-jor step in the modernization of the exhibition center is the completion of Hall 19/20 in the spring of 2015 – capping off a 1.5-year construction project. The hall includes a multi-functional conference facility that provides the ideal setting for ConfEx events.

2012 Deutsche Messe takes a majority stake in spring Messe Management GmbH to become Europe’s biggest organizer of HR exhibitions.

2011 Deutsche Messe acquires a stake in the event agency event it AG and achieves a major boost to its conference business. The new Deut-sche Messe subsidiary specializes (among other things) in electronic visitor management.

2016 U.S. President Barack Obamaopens HANNOVER MESSE 2016 joint-ly with German Chancellor Angela Merkel. The United States is the of-ficial Partner Country at the world’s biggest trade fair for industrial tech-nology.

2017 70 years of showcasing the future – from legendary beginnings as Germany's first Export Fair on up to the world's foremost showcase for digitalization, making 2017 a trulyspecial year for Deutsche Messe.

2013 Deutsche Messe becomes the first exhibition company to pick up on the megatrends that embody the sweeping wave of digitaliza-tion: Industry 4.0 and the Internet of Things.
