For more than five years, 16 nationsare jointly operating a large researchlaboratory in space – the InternationalSpace Station (ISS). It is the greatestscience and engineering project in thehistory of mankind, eliving evidencethat the peaceful international utili-zation of space to the advantage ofall partners is both possible and sen-sible. This is true in spite of the delaysand technical problems that beset theconstruction of the ISS, for despiteall this, the project is being pursuedwith great commitment. Ever sincethe first occupants “moved in” onNovember 2, 2000, astronauts havebeen conducting research on the ISS,including excellent experiments fromGermany. The ISS partners includethe USA, Russia, eleven ESA memberstates, Canada, and Japan.

Gravity is omnipresent on Earth. Allphysical, chemical, and biologicalprocesses on our planet are subjectto this condition. In many ways, theeffect of gravity is there for all tosee: Things fall to the ground, waterflows downhill, and houses collapsewhen disasters strike. However, there are many natural and technicalprocesses in which the influence ofgravity is not immediately distinguish-able, although it is as fundamentalhere as elsewhere.

As a perpetual constant, gravity has beena key factor in evolution: For four billionyears, life on our planet has been inextri-cably interwoven with the force of gravity.

For these reasons, basic research in anumber of important fields, includingmedicine, biology, physics, and materialsscience, needs to be conducted underspace conditions, which specificallymeans microgravity or, more generally, modified gravity in this context.

Forming part of Germany’s Space Pro-gramme, a programme of the DLR SpaceAgency entitled Research under SpaceConditions supports investigations into theinfluence of modified gravity conditionson various phenomena in life and physicalsciences. The insights thus gained byscience and technology may then betranslated into innovative applications for the people on Earth. Specifically, theDLR’s research under space conditionsserves four objectives:

- To investigate basic vital functions;

- To develop new methods of diagnosisand therapy in medicine;

- To expand the horizons of physics; and

- To conduct innovative materials research.

Investigation ofBasic Vital FunctionsAs life on Earth is subject to the influenceof gravity, some life functions can beexplored only in its absence, when scien-tists may observe how organisms liveand what course biological processestake without that factor. From theseobservations, conclusions may be drawnabout how gravity is perceived and re-sponded to by all living beings, protozoaas well as humans. Such insights are ofgreat importance in basic research, forthey help us to improve our understand-ing of how signals are processed, andhow life on our home planet originated, spread, and developed.

Developing newMethods of Diag-nosis and Therapyin MedicineFurthermore, these investigations are of eminent importance in biotechnologyand medicine. They provide us with freshknowledge about the interaction be-tween the various systems of the humanbody, such as muscles and bones, theheart, the cardiovascular system, and theimmune system. This knowledge, in turn,is incorporated in the diagnosis and ther-apy of the sick. Thus, research underspace conditions has brought forth inno-vative therapies to treat osteoporosis aswell as new instruments to measure eyemovements and intraocular pressure – toname only a few.

Both these goals, investigating basic vitalfunctions and developing new methodsof diagnosis and therapy in medicine, will play a crucial role in securing thefundamental prerequisites for conductinglong-term exploratory missions in thefuture.

Expansion of theHorizons of PhysicsSpace conditions facilitate new insightsin basic research. So-called plasma crys-tals are a case in point. Because of theinfluence of gravity, only two-dimensionalcrystalline structures can be produced onEarth, while three-dimensional crystalsmay be studied only in space. Next totheir importance in basic research, thereare signs indicating that, in the long run, these crystallization processes may beused in practice to coat electronic micro-chips, for instance. Further examples ofbasic research include the exploration ofcertain quantum phenomena and theinvestigation of the early phases of plan-etary development.

Innovative Materials ResearchMost metallic and semi-conductingmaterials are produced from the liquidstate by melt technologies. Eliminatingdisturbing forces in melts, weightlessnessoffers crucial advantages in analyzing the interaction between the solidificationconditions, the micro-structure, and theproperties of a material. Furthermore, by means of containerless processing inweightlessness important melt properties, such as surface tension and viscosity, canbe measured much more precisely thanin terrestrial laboratories. These findings,in turn, serve to improve the realism ofcomputer simulations. This numericalmodelling plays an increasing role in indu-stry to develop new materials in a moreefficient, energy-saving and environ-ment-friendly way.

Implementation ofthe ProgrammeThrough its “Research under SpaceConditions” programme, the DLR SpaceAgency assists German scientists in inves-tigating these and other questions of asimilar nature. The DLR supports scien-tists working at universities, Max PlanckInstitutes, and other research institutionsin the fields of biology, medicine, physics, and materials science.

In addition, the DLR gives contracts tothe space industry for the developmentof equipment specifically designed foruse in space. Not infrequently, the inno-vative technologies thus developed arefound suitable for use on Earth. Thus, results of experiments conducted inspace were instrumental in improvingthe production process of castings formotor vehicles and airplanes as well as in developing new medical devices.

To investigate the influence of the param-eter “gravity”, you need to modify itsintensity. The centrifugal force generatedin a centrifuge permits changing theacceleration and, by the same token, varying local gravity. Weightlessness canbe realized in free fall; on Earth, it can be achieved only for short periods. Onspace stations and satellites, on the otherhand, scientific phenomena may beinvestigated under microgravity for pro-longed periods.

ARIANE 1ARIANE 1

In the early 1980s, Europe had finallysecured its own access to space. TheARIANE launcher was a great success, and SPACELAB, the space laboratorydeveloped and built in Germany for the American space shuttle, wasready for launching. What is more, the member states of the EuropeanSpace Agency ESA had impressivelydemonstrated their competence inbuilding and operating researchsatellites. The Soviet Union had al-ready gone ahead and taken thenext “logical step”: A space stationpermanently manned by astronautsin orbit around Earth. The idea ofbuilding a European space station wasbeing discussed both in Germanyand in France.

The USA, too, were thinking along similarlines. While activities there focussed onthe development of the space shuttle atfirst, the construction of a space stationhad been considered even in the 1970s.Now, this was the last remaining field ofastronautics in which the USA had notyet drawn level with the USSR or over-taken it.

The Early SpaceStations – fromSALYUT to MIRThe first concept of a “space observa-tory” was sketched out by the theoristHermann Noordung in 1929 in his book“The Problem of Space Travel: TheRocket Motor”. Forty years later, it wasused by Stanley Kubrick as a model forhis cult film “2001: A Space Odyssey”.

As early as April 19, 1971, the SovietUnion launched its first orbital station,SALYUT 1, marking the successful comple-tion of a major step towards establishingman permanently in orbit around Earth. In 1977, SALYUT 6 followed, representingthe next generation of space stationswhich, equipped with a second dockingport for supply ships, could remain muchlonger in space. From August 27 toSeptember 3, 1978, Sigmund Jähn wasthe first German cosmonaut to work onSALYUT 6 under the INTERCOSMOS coop-eration between the GDR and the USSR.In April 1982, SALYUT 7 was launched, where two months later, Jean-LoupChrétien, a Frenchman, became the firstastronaut from the West to stay on boarda Soviet space station.

Meanwhile, a third generation of spacestations was being designed in the SovietUnion, embodied in the multi-modularspace laboratory MIR which was finallylaunched into orbit on February 20, 1986at an altitude of about 300 kilometres. With its five research segments that werelater docked on to the base module, itreached a mass of more than 120 tons.Designed for a life of twelve years, itactually lived far beyond the collapse ofthe leading power of the East. Hangingon after the end of the Cold War until its final controlled crash in the Pacific onMarch 23, 2001, MIR offered scientistsfrom the West as well as from the Eastopportunities to conduct long-term research in space for 15 years.

The first countermove of the USA wasSKYLAB. Installed in the third stage of thelast SATURN V ever launched, it offereda crew of three an opportunity to stayon board three times for a total of 171days in 1973 to conduct scientific andtechnical experiments in solar and cometresearch, materials science, medicine, pharmacology, Earth observation, meteo-rology, biology, and chemistry.

A Space Station of the West –FREEDOMIn the 1980s, NASA was looking forways to prolong the crew’s orbital expe-rience, new scientific experiments, andcommercial applications. In addition, aspace station owned by the Westernnations was conceived as symbolizingpeaceful cooperation as well as the tech-nological dominance of the “free world”at a time when the nuclear arms racewas exacerbating the political confronta-tion between East and West.

In 1983, the USA began to considerbuilding a space station together with theirpartners in Europe, Japan, and Canada. In the summer of that year, MBB/ERNOand Aeritalia presented the first industrialstudy dealing with Europe’s contributionunder the name of COLUMBUS. It con-sisted of a module that would be firmlydocked on to the core of the station anda free-floating research laboratory.

Der europäische Raumgleiter HERMES vordem Wiedereintritt über EuropaThe European HERMES orbital Glider shortlybefore its re-entry above Europe

On January 25, 1984, President Reagancommissioned the NASA to develop apermanently-manned space station thatwas to be used for scientific and industrialresearch as well as for the production ofspecial materials and medicines. It was tobe launched in 1992, the jubilee year ofthe rediscovery of America by ChristopherColumbus.

In the time that followed, the new large-scale space programmes in WesternEurope were dominated by Germany,Italy, and France. France concentrated ondeveloping ARIANE 5 from the Europeanlauncher and designing a manned Euro-pean orbital glider to be named HERMES.Germany focussed on COLUMBUS togeth-er with Italy. Those responsible in politicsand industry expected all this to providea boost to technological developmentbecause of the unprecedented require-ments that would have to be met withregard to the reliability, precision, andcontrollability of complex technical systems.Engineers and researchers were lookingforward to powerful impulses in the fieldsof automation and robotics, materialsresearch, process and production techno-logy, data processing, and telecommuni-cations.

In 1985, the ESA Council of Ministers, meeting in Rome, approved Europe’scontribution towards the American spacestation. The conditions that would governEurope’s participation were negotiatedduring subsequent European-Americantalks. When the ESA Council of Ministersmet next at The Hague in 1987, the Euro-pean Ministers endorsed the COLUMBUSprogramme and approved another three-year phase of preparation. At the time, the objective was to launch COLUMBUSon ARIANE 5. According to plan, Europe’scontribution towards the internationalspace station now included a modulefirmly docked to the core station, a tem-porarily manned free-flying laboratory,an unmanned research platform on apolar orbit, and a data relay satellite.

While the space-station programme wasgrowing apace in Europe, more and moreproblems arose in the USA: On the onehand, delays were caused by the compli-cated annual negotiations about thebudget in Congress. On the other, furtherdelays were caused by differences ofopinion about whether the space stationshould be a research laboratory or anorbital ‘way station’ for the future astro-nautical exploration of space. Most im-portant of all, the loss of the Challengerspace shuttle on January 28, 1986 stretch-ed the time required to implement theprogramme by several years. At least, the station was given its first, politicallymotivated name in 1987: FREEDOM.

There were many reasons why an inter-national space station was a difficultundertaking, for it constituted an entirelynovel problem in cooperation within thecommunity of nations. Partner states had to agree not only on a technologicalconcept and the way in which the sta-tion was to be used but also on a legalframework. Who should hold the intel-lectual property rights on new develop-ments? Which penal code should applyin a place outside any national territory? How would the cost of operation be shared out and the management of thestation coordinated? Regulations cover-ing these questions were encoded in anintergovernmental agreement in 1988.Called a “treaty without precedent”, it isone of the most voluminous documentsin international cooperation. Amongother things, it sets out that researchshall be free, and that the station shallbe used for peaceful purposes by agree-ment.

The Turn of theTide: East andWest in Spacetogether – the ISSThen, in 1989, the Berlin Wall camedown, and only a little later, Russia adopt-ed a democratic constitution. As theCold War between East and West ended, the political importance of keeping thespace station a purely Western affairdwindled. Cooperation supplanted com-petition. In 1993, the USA invited Russiato participate in the international spacestation programme. The other partnercountries assented to this proposal in1994, for it promised many advantages:Russia led the world by a wide margin in terms of its experience in designing, building, and managing space stations. Moreover, there were engineers in Russiawho, highly experienced in sensitive fieldssuch as rocket technology but lackingemployment, threatened to emigrate tothird countries, such as Iran, Iraq, or China,an eventuality which certainly did notsuit the security interests of the West. Finally, another partner would offer anoth-er shoulder to bear the financial burdenby, for instance, providing the SOYUZ andPROTON launchers. As an added benefit, the Russian space station, MIR, was usedby the partner states in the 1990s to trainastronauts in working together in space.

The cost of the new projects was grow-ing, as were the technological problemsbesetting HERMES, which had to beabandoned in 1993. Together with theworldwide economic crisis in the early1990s and the participation of Russia in the international space station project, now given the politically more innocuousname of “ALPHA” or “ISS”, this called fora fundamental reformulation of the con-cept. After all, the Russians wanted tocontribute their own developments forthe MIR 2 station which they had plannedto build but could hardly have financedon their own. Now that HERMES hadbeen abandoned, the free-flying Europeanlaboratory could no longer be serviced,so it was cancelled as well. Furthermore, the docking European laboratory, nowcalled by the name formerly used to designate the entire European programme,COLUMBUS, was reduced in size to suitnew American plans. The polar platform,on the other hand, was detached fromthe European programme and used as a basis for building the complex environ-mental satellite ENVISAT, which was

launched in 2002. In 1995, the ESACouncil of Ministers, meeting in Toulouse, voted to include the European orbitaltransfer vehicle ATV in the programme to transport payloads to the ISS. From2007 onwards, ATV launches will coverEurope’s share in the cost of operation.

Because of these concept changes andthe new geopolitical situation that arosein the 1990s, the timeframe of the pro-gramme was stretched further. In theprocess, manned spaceflight lost some ofits strategic importance for the autonomyof Europe, becoming instead a field forinternational cooperation. By the sametoken, the station became an importantelement in East-West relations, a stabiliz-ing factor between the old superpowers, and a means to defuse tension.

According to a statement of principlesigned by ESA and NASA in 1997, Europewill supply additional equipment to theUSA, including laboratory systems andtwo nodes to connect the stations’modules. In return, the USA agreed tolaunch COLUMBUS on a space shuttle. A treaty concluded with Russia providedfor the duty-free entry and exit of goodswithin the framework of the ISS cooper-ation as well as for the delivery of aEuropean robot arm and a data manage-ment system for the Russian ISS segment.Another agreement on the exchange ofhardware was concluded with Japan.

On January 29, 1998, the ministers re-sponsible in the partner states met inWashington to sign a new intergovern-mental agreement so as to provide a basisin international law for the ISS. While itgave more emphasis to the principle ofequal partnership than the agreement of1988, the USA retained its leading rolein design and building. The station nowfundamentally differed from that envis-aged in 1988. When finished, its configu-ration was to include more than 100 com-ponents, and its interior volume wouldbe approximately that of a jumbo jet. Itwill incorporate six research laboratories(two American, two Russian, one Europe-an, and one Japanese) and four servicemodules. Three robot arms will be availa-ble for extra-vehicular activities (EVAs).

The launch of the Russian Zarya (dawn)module on November 20, 1998 atBaikonur rang in the most intense flightactivities in the history of space flight. However, the destruction of the Americanspace shuttle Columbia on February 1,2003 caused yet another delay of morethan three years as well as a marked cutback in the number of shuttle flightsscheduled before their termination in2010. Now that shuttle flights have beensuccessfully resumed in the summer of2005 and the STS-121 mission has beencompleted in July 2006, the further con-struction of the space station appearssecure.

Early ScientificUtilization of theSpace StationGerman researchers had been in on thescientific utilization of the station eversince it began in 2001. In the time thatfollowed, they ran a total of 17 experi-ments dedicated to investigating thehuman vestibular system, breeding pro-tein crystals, performing basic research inphysics (plasma), and studying scientificproblems in radiation biology. Whilesome serial experiments of the total of17 are still going on, others have beenconcluded.

Thus, for example, a total of seven ex-periments in protein crystallization thatwere coordinated by German scientistswere completed between May 2001 andJune 2002 in the American as well as in the Russian section of the ISS. Someexperiments yielded marked improve-ments in our understanding of the struc-ture of certain molecules, some of whichare of great pharmaceutical importance;others resulted in the first successfulcrystallization ever achieved such as inthe case of certain surface layer proteins.Conducted from April to June 2001 incooperation with various German andEuropean research institutes in theAmerican section of the ISS, the DOS-MAP radiation-dosimetry experiment has been successfully concluded as well.DOSMAP was conceived by the DLR Ins-titute of Aerospace Medicine to measurevarious components of cosmic radiationinside the ISS.

Eminent importance is attributed to theso-called “plasma crystal experiment”conducted jointly by the Max PlanckInstitute for Extraterrestrial Physics inGarching and the Institute for HighEnergy Density at the Russian Academyof Sciences in Moscow, the developmentand construction of which were support-ed by DLR. Actually, this series of experiments in complex plasma physicsin German-Russian cooperation raisedthe curtain for scientific research on thespace station in February 2001 and con-tinues to this day.

The first experimental installation, PK-3,was replaced in December 2005 by a refined facility called PK-3 Plus whichopened up new experimental options. The numerous results and insights, someof them perfectly surprising, discoveredin the highly topical and innovative fieldof complex plasmas – a state of matterthat was utterly unknown only a fewyears ago – have been described in morethan 30 publications so far. During theASTROLAB mission, the scope of investiga-tions on the new PK-3 Plus facility will beenlarged by the similarly topical field ofphase transitions in complex plasmas.

Numbering almost 100, further experi-ments designed by German scientists in biology, medicine, materials research, physics, and other fields have been se-lected and are currently in various stagesof preparation.

The ISS ExtensionThe Current Status of ISSConstruction

The first flight of an American spaceshuttle after the Columbia accident onFebruary 1, 2003 took place from July 26 to August 9, 2005. While the missionwas successful overall, pieces of foamonce again separated from the insulationof the external shuttle tank despite itsextensive overhaul before the launch. Todeal with these problems once and forall, the NASA deferred the next spaceshuttle flight to July 2006.

Until the shuttles are finally decommis-sioned in 2010, NASA plans another 16 flights to the ISS and a maintenancemission to the Hubble Space Telescope.Flights that serve the construction of theISS will have priority. After all, the Euro-pean space laboratory COLUMBUS, theJapanese experimental module KIBO, andtwo nodes are all waiting to be launchedinto space. Once node 3 has docked on,which offers additional sleeping andliving accommodation, it will be possibleto increase the permanent crew to sixastronauts. This will happen approximatelyin 2009.

According to schedule, the new AmericanCrew Exploration Vehicle (CEV) that willreplace the space shuttle will be availablefor carrying astronauts to the ISS no laterthan 2014.

Germany’s great Contribution – the European Research LaboratoryCOLUMBUS, and more

COLUMBUS is a multi-purpose laboratoryfor multi-disciplinary research in micro-gravity. It is 6.9 metres in length and 4.5metres in diameter. Research conductedin it will cover materials and life sciences, the investigation of fluids, and the devel-opment of new technologies. Plans forthe future provide for industrial andcommercial use as well. The laboratorywill be the main workplace of the Euro-pean astronauts. Platforms attached toits outer wall offer opportunities to con-duct experiments in the hard vacuum of space. Operations will be directed by the European COLUMBUS Control Centreat the DLR’s Space Operations Centre inOberpfaffenhofen.

As the principle contractor for COLUMBUS,EADS Space Transportation in Bremenleads a consortium of 41 companies from14 countries which is responsible for de-veloping, building, integrating, and testingthe laboratory. A fixed-price contract onthe development of COLUMBUS was sign-ed in March 1996. The overall cost ofthe module amounts to 880 million Euros, test facilities included, of which about450 million Euros will go to the Germanindustry.

On May 28, 2006, COLUMBUS took offfor the Kennedy Space Center in a BelugaAirbus, and it is now ready to be trans-ported to the ISS. All rework and systemtests necessitated by the delays in itsconstruction have been concluded success-fully, and its internal payload has beenintegrated. COLUMBUS is scheduled forlaunching late in September 2007.

Moreover, the German industry has beenplaying a crucial role in the developmentand production of technically sophisticat-ed items of laboratory equipment. Thus, for example, EADS and OHB act as systemmanagers for the development of the

following experimental facilities: BIOLAB(for biological research, EADS), EPM(European physiology modules for medi-cal research, OHB), and MSL (materialsscience laboratory, EADS). Other Germancompanies are involved as subcontractorsin the development of essential compo-nents. There are other devices that mostlyoriginated from Germany, such as theMELFI sample freezer (down to -80degrees centigrade; mainly developed byLinde) and the scientific sample-handlingdevice called microgravity science glove-box (MSG, Astrium Friedrichshafen). Inaddition, Germany was responsible forthe development and production of theISS data management system (DMS-R)which, equipped with fault-tolerant computers supplied by EADS, “controls”the ISS from the Russian service module.Installed on the ISS in 2000, DMS-R hasbeen working reliably since the beginningof 2001.

Germany’s commitment further extendsto control elements for the Europeanrobotic arm (ERA) and for two importantconnecting nodes, 2 and 3. Node 2 wasdelivered to the NASA as early as 2003.The ERA will be transported to the ISS ina Russian Proton launcher late in 2007.

Inaugurated on October 19, 2004, thenew COLUMBUS Control Centre was firstactively involved in a mission when theItalian ESA astronaut, Roberto Vittori, flew to the ISS for one week in April2005. It also played a major role duringthe long-term mission of the GermanESA-Astronaut Thomas Reiter in 2006.

From 2007 onwards, the COLUMBUSControl Centre will be involved in themissions of the unmanned AutomatedTransfer Vehicle (ATV) to the ISS. In thefuture, ATV flights will supply the spacestation with food, water, fuel, and oxy-gen, in addition to transporting newscientific experiments to the ISS. For thispurpose, the COLUMBUS Control Centrewill provide the infrastructure requiredfor communication between the controlcentres at Toulouse, Houston, and Moscowwhile the ATV is in operation in orbit.

Finally, the centre will control all opera-tions in the COLUMBUS laboratory from2007/2008 onwards. As soon as themodule has docked at the ISS, theCOLUMBUS Control Centre will assumeresponsibility for the European spacelaboratory as well as for the coordinationof its scientific programme.

The COLUMBUS Control Centre is sched-uled to operate throughout the entire15-year life of COLUMBUS. The construc-tion of the new control centre was fi-nanced by ESA, the Federal Ministry forEducation and Research (BMBF), and thegovernment of Bavaria. The operation of the centre is financed by the EuropeanISS member states.

ATV – Europe’s Logistics Carrier forthe ISS

The ATV (Automated Transfer Vehicle) is Europe’s contribution to the Internatio-nal Space Station ISS and its logistics.ATV will also offset the European part of the common system operations costwhich is shared among all ISS partners. The ATV spacecraft will be launched withan ARIANE 5 launcher from Kourou inFrench Guyana. After separation fromthe launch vehicle, the re-ignitable upperstage EPS-V will insert ATV properly intothe orbital plane of the ISS. During theautonomous phasing of ATV to the ISSthe ATV-control centre in Toulouse willmonitor each step of the flight sequence. The vehicle is able to stay docked at theISS up to six months.

The ATV is 10 metres long and has a diameter of 4.5 metres. The unfoldedsolar arrays of the vehicle span over 22.3 metres. The mass of the fuelled and equipped ATV will achieve up to20.75 tons.

The ATV consists of a propulsion module,an avionics module and an integratedpressurized cargo carrier module, inwhich up to 5.5 tons of cargo could bestowed. The overall payload capacity is7.7 tons for dry cargo, air, fuel and water. The cargo loading depends on each mis-sion and will vary. ATV will also carryspare parts and scientific instruments tothe ISS.

Another task for ATV is the re-boost of the International Space Station. TheEuropean logistics carrier will use itsmain engines to periodically rise the alti-tude of the ISS every 10 to 45 days.Close to the end of the ATV mission theastronauts will store the waste inside thevehicle, which could be up to 6.5 tons. After de-docking the ATV will loiter andfinally perform its destructive re-entryover the pacific.

ATV is the most complex vehicle everbuilt in Europe. Its level of automation is about 4 times higher than on SOYUZor Progress vehicles. Besides ATV only theRussian PROGRESS and SOYUZ vehiclesare able to dock autonomously to the ISS.Since July 2004 the ATV-1 “Jules Verne”underwent extensive testing at ESTEC inNoordwijk (Netherlands). The flight of“Jules Verne” is scheduled for May 2007.Four additional ATV flights are planneduntil 2013.

In addition, some centres are equippedwith high-speed networks (up to 32Mbpsin ATM) for fast data communication, and with archives where scientific datamay be stored permanently. This commu-nication infrastructure permits trackingexperiments on board as well as control-ling them interactively from user centresor scientists’ laboratories. The EuropeanISS ground network connects all centresto the international mission centres in theUSA and Russia. The European groundsegment is managed by DLR’s COLUMBUSControl Centre in Oberpfaffenhofen onbehalf of ESA.

The Microgravity User Support Centre(MUSC) at DLR in Cologne forms an integral part of the space station’s groundnetwork as Germany’s national user centre. The MUSC began working ope-ratively for the ISS when the Matroshkaexperiment was started in February 2004.Since that time, the centre in Cologne hasbeen receiving data from the station andmonitoring and controlling experimentson it. In parallel, the infrastructure wasupgraded for the future operation of theEuropean research module COLUMBUS.Full-scale operations in all European user centres will commence as soon asCOLUMBUS becomes operational.

An Italian, Umberto Guidoni, was the first European to take off for the International Space Station in aspace shuttle in April 2001. He wasfollowed by seven other Europeanastronauts on missions with an aver-age duration of ten days.

The German ESA astronaut ThomasReiter is the first European to travel tothe International Space Station (ISS) for a long-term stay. At the same time, he is the first German to visit the ISS. OnJuly 4, Mr Reiter took off on the Americanspace shuttle Discovery (STS-121) for amission of six to seven months.

Here are the reasons why Thomas Reiter’slong-term mission constitutes a majormilestone for Europe in the use of the ISS:

For the first Time, a European joinsthe ISS ExpeditionCrewTwo days after his arrival on the ISS, MrReiter took up his duties as second flightengineer of the 13/14 expedition crew.Among others, they include checkingand servicing the space station, monitor-ing its environmental and life-supportsystems, supervising the health and safe-ty of the crew, extra-vehicular activities(EVAs, also known as “space walks”), andhandling the logistics of the Progresstransports.

Europe’s first Programme forLong-term Researchon the ISSThomas Reiter will conduct around 30scientific and technological experimentson board the ISS. While eight of theseexperiments come straight from Germany,German researchers are involved in others. This is the first-ever opportunity forEuropean scientists to develop a volumi-nous experimental programme specificallydesigned to utilize the options availableon the ISS and carry it out over a pro-longed period. The programme includesinstalling and commissioning of three re-search facilities specifically developed forthe ISS. Until now, European experimentswere conducted either by American orRussian astronauts or by ESA astronautson taxi missions to the ISS that lastedonly for a few days. Now, however, it has become possible for the first time to conduct test series and vary specificparameters as thoroughly as in any ter-restrial laboratory.

The scientific experiments that will berun by European researchers during theASTROLAB mission focus on medicalresearch. Designed to answer questionsabout the regulation of the cardiovascu-lar, respiratory, vestibular, and immunesystems, the results expected from theseexperiments might open up new optionsin diagnosis and therapy. The programmewill be complemented by experiments inradiation and gravitational biology as wellas in plasma physics.

In addition to scientific experiments, sev-eral commercial experiments, technologydemonstrations, and school experimentswill be conducted by the astronauts.

Return of the ISS toa Three-man CrewAfter the tragic loss of the Americanspace shuttle Columbia on February 1,2003, the crew of the ISS was restrictedto two members because of the limitedsupply capability of the Russian Progresstransfer vehicle. Since the beginning ofthe ASTROLAB mission, three astronautsdo duty in space once again, a fact fromwhich research on board the ISS standsto benefit most of all.

The IMMUNO experiment opens up anew chapter in Germany’s space lifesciences research. While it has beenknown for a long time that the immunesystem of astronauts is impaired by theirstay in space, the precise causes andmechanisms of this impairment remainlargely unknown. German scientists nowplan to remedy this situation. Towardsthis end, the DLR Space Agency hasmade immune research one of the focalpoints of its life sciences programme.

The deterioration of the immune systemin astronauts is probably caused by awide variety of stress factors, such as iso-lation, heavy workload, and a disturbedsleep pattern. Further contributions may

come from the special conditions inspace, such as weightlessness and radia-tion exposure. People who are seriouslyill on Earth struggle against similar prob-lems with their immune system, trigger-ed in part by the same stress factors. Inboth cases, the immune system shouldbe powerful enough to defend the bodyagainst biological and chemical pathogensbut should not be overloaded either.

Scientists from the LMU in Munich arecurrently conducting comprehensive bio-chemical analyses supplemented by psy-chological tests to investigate immune-system changes in ISS long-term crews. From comparing these data to studies of patients who are isolated or confinedto bed, they expect insights into the roleof the various factors that weaken theimmune system as well as into themechanism of immune defence. Suchknowledge constitutes the foundationfor the development of new preventiveor therapeutic methods, which may thenbe equally used on astronauts and oncritically ill patients in intensive care.

Orientierung des Menschen im Raumwährend längerer Schwerelosigkeit -ETD

Koordinator: A. Clarke (Charité Berlin)

Human Orientation in Space duringprolonged Periods of Weightlessness;ETD

Coordinator: A. Clarke (Charité Berlin)

The problems arising from motion sick-ness, also known as kinetosis, comprise anumber of symptoms such as pallor, out-breaks of cold sweat, nausea, and vomit-ing. Frequently, a feeling of lethargy andlassitude appears as well. As these prob-lems often occur during shipboard jour-neys, they are generally designated asseasickness or travel sickness. In astro-nauts, who often show the same symp-toms because of changes in gravity, thecondition is called space sickness.

It is generally accepted today that kinet-osis is caused by a sensory conflict that is due mainly to two different body sys-tems “competing” with each other. Thefirst is the sense of balance (the vestibu-lar system in the inner ear) which con-stantly monitors the attitude of the headrelative to the force of gravity, while theother is the visual or optical system.

If we are provided with contradictoryinformation by these two systems, a sen-sory conflict may result. Under micrograv-ity conditions, for instance, our visual system may supply us with the sameinformation as before, while the vestibu-lar system is no longer stimulated by ourhabitual orientation towards the force ofgravity.

The problem of how to treat or preventkinetosis adequately remains unsolved tothis very day. While certain symptomsmay be partially suppressed by medica-tion, this does not solve the problemitself.

To study the vestibular system, the eyemovements of the astronauts on the ISSare tracked by a 3-D ETD (eye trackingdevice) specifically developed for use onthe space station. This helps researchersimprove their understanding of the pro-cesses that may lead to kinetosis, a sinequa non for finding better methods fordiagnosing and treating balance disor-ders and motor disturbances both inspace and in clinical practice.

Meanwhile, two spin-off companies havebeen founded in Berlin which successful-ly market the eye tracking device in avariety of commercial configurations.Applications differ widely, ranging fromdetecting tiredness in truck and bus driv-ers to checking the progress of ablativelaser surgery on the cornea in the treat-ment of myopia, the diagnosis of a mul-titude of neurological diseases includingdizziness, and tracking the eye and headmovements of test subjects in advertisingimpact research.

Life Sciences – Radiation BiologyA Phantom on the ISS – MATROSHKA:Measuring Cosmic Radiation and itsEffects

Coordinator: G. Reitz (DLR, Cologne)

From February 2004 to August 2005, aphantom was attached to the outer wallof the International Space Station (ISS).Now, it is inside to keep the crew com-pany. However, we are not looking at apeculiar kind of space ghost but at aserious experiment called Matroshka, which measures radiation exposure bothinside and outside the ISS. The ‘phan-tom’ really is a special dummy that wasdeveloped and built by the DLR Instituteof Aerospace Medicine.

Consisting of a head and upper torso, the “phantom dummy” itself resembles ahuman body. Inside, it is equipped withmore than 800 active and passive radia-tion detectors widely distributed also atthe locations of various simulated humanorgans. The valuable data already deliver-ed by these sensors are now being evalu-ated by participating scientists. To simu-late the protective effect of a space suit, the dummy was encased in a carbon-fibre container during its stay outside theISS.

Equipped with advanced sensors,Matroshka is currently busy measuringradiation exposure inside the ISS. Furtherso-called active dosimeters will be install-ed in October 2006 during the ASTROLABmission. 2007 Matroshka will be re-installed outside the ISS during an EVAto resume its measurements.

By measuring the radiation doses towhich astronauts are exposed inside andoutside the ISS, the risks of cosmic radia-tion for the human body can be assess-ed. The results of this experiment may

Radiation Exposure of Astronauts –CHROMOSOME-2

Coordinator: C. Johannes (Essen University)

Exposure to cosmic radiation may en-hance the chromosome mutation rate inhumans who stay in space for prolongedperiods. On the bottom line, this impliesan enhanced risk of cancer. Indeed, theresults obtained so far from astronautsand cosmonauts on the ISS show signifi-cantly enhanced mutation rates in mem-bers of the long-term crews, whereas nochanges were found in short-term crewmembers. Luckily, blood samples takenafter the flight indicated that the cellshad their own effective repair mecha-nisms, so that the radiation risk for theastronauts may be considered acceptable.

Using new methods, scientists fromEssen University now intend to obtaineven more precise information about the mutagenic effect of radiation on ISSastronauts. For this purpose, they useenhanced cytogenetic methods to lookfor changes in the chromosomes of specific defence cells in the astronauts’blood. On Earth, the same method isalready being used to detect the muta-genic effect of environmental poisons inhumans.

Coordinators: G. Morfill (Max Planck Institute forExtraterrestrial Physics, Garching)V. Molotkov (Institute for High EnergyDensity, Academy of Sciences, Moscow)

A complex plasma consists of an electri-cally charged gas containing free elec-trons and ions such as found in lumines-cent lamps, and small particles (“dust”)ranging between 1 and 20 µm in size. These particles are electrostatically charg-ed in the gas and interact; gas and par-ticles together behave like a single sub-stance. Depending on the experimentconditions, namely the strength of theelectric field that generates the plasmaand the gas pressure, such a complexplasma will change its structure andbehave like a liquid, a gas, or a metalliccrystal, in which case the dust particleswill be arranged regularly in a three-dimensional pattern. This highly-orderedstructure is also known as “plasma crystal”.It was first demonstrated experimentallyin 1994.

Common plasmas take little notice ofgravity. However, as the mass of themicro-particles introduced in the gas is ahundred billion times greater than thatof the electrons and ions, a complexplasma is sensitive to gravity. Particlessettle, so that a plasma crystal is com-pressed in the direction of the force ofgravity and restricted to a few lattice lay-ers. Large three-dimensional structurescan be built up and explored withoutdistortion only under microgravity condi-tions. On the one hand, scientists areinterested in the physical properties ofthe complex plasma itself. On the other, its behaviour makes it a model for “nor-mal” materials because unlike these, itpermits observing structural changes“from atom to atom”. Thus, researchers

Under terrestrial Gravity Conditions theParticles occupy the lowest possible Area.Such a Plasma Crystal is “stressed”.

In Weightlessness the Particles of a Plasmacrystal can distribute in all Directions. Largethree-dimensional Crystalline Structures become available.

would like to know how waves propa-gate and liquids mix, how a vortex devel-ops in a liquid, or how a crystal melts.

During the ASTROLAB mission, severalseries of experiments will be run to study“phase transitions” in complex plasmas.Scientists are particularly interested inthe transition from the liquid to thegaseous state, and in finding the criticalpoint at which the differences betweenliquid and gas disappear. For this purpose,Thomas Reiter will prepare the PK-3 Plusequipment for operation, initiate the auto-matic experiment, and look at a screenoccasionally to check what is happeningin the plasma chamber. In consultationwith scientists on the ground, he caninterfere manually to optimize the courseof an experiment. Image and measurementdata will be stored automatically on harddiscs, which will then be transportedback to Earth for evaluation by a SOYUZcapsule.

Complex plasmas are widespread innature, occurring, for example, in inter-stellar molecular clouds, planetary ringsystems such as that of Saturn, or the tailsof comets. In plasma technology, theyfrequently appear as contamination. Nextto their importance for basic research influid, solid-state, and astrophysics, futurepractical applications are beginning toemerge for complex plasmas in, forinstance, the coating of electronic micro-chips and the production of solar cellsand flat monitors.

Industrie undTechnologiePhysiologische Untersuchung derHaut im Weltraum – SKIN

Koordinator: Dr. M. Massow, ISS Lab Ruhr GmbHInvestigatoren: DermaTronnier GmbH, Courage +Khazaka electronic GmbH, Degussa

Coordinator: Dr. M. Massow, ISS Lab Ruhr GmbHInvestigators: Derma Tronnier GmbH, Courage +Khazaka electronic GmbH, Degussa

From past observations of the humanskin in weightlessness, we know that ittends to dehydrate faster and grow thin-ner. The skin ages in “quick motion”, soto speak. Both the dermatological andthe cosmetics industry are particularlyinterested in investigating these ageingprocesses in the skin and in developingpreventive options.

Under this heading, the participatingindustrial consortium from North Rhine-Westphalia intends to use modern, externally-applied methods to measurevarious skin values systematically. Thisshould permit a detailed characterizationof the manner in which the skin adaptsto altered conditions in microgravity andre-adapts after the return to Earth. Onthat basis, the consortium hopes to beable to draw general conclusions regard-ing skin ageing processes, which shouldyield new approaches for developingeffective countermeasures.

A new InnovativeRadio System forEarth: GTSGlobal transmission services (GTS) is aforward-looking system for transmittingradio signals from the InternationalSpace Station (ISS). Currently tested in a pilot experiment, it will be marketed as a new service soon afterwards. GTS isthe first commercial experiment on thespace station. The new concept involvesa computer system and a transmitterinstalled on board the ISS. It is controlledfrom a separate ground control centre, which also monitors and edits the dataradioed by the transmitter in space.

Compared to other satellites, the ISS fliesin an orbit that is very low (about 400kilometres) and highly inclined towardsthe equator (51.6 degrees). From thatorbit, any place on Earth located between70 degrees northern and 70 degreessouthern latitude can be reached byradio five to seven times a day. GTS isdesigned to facilitate transmitting com-mercial data packages to mobile miniaturereceivers located anywhere in the world.Related services include global radio-clock synchronization; paging; car, credit-card, and mobile-phone theft protection;car recalls; traffic emergency calls; remotecontrolling; container tracking; and fleetmanagement. To ensure data privacy, thesystem uses a specific encoding algorithm(cryptographic modulation).

In the future, miniaturized receivers willpermit protecting even relatively smallobjects from misuse, including watches, mobile phones, electronic car keys, andchip cards. In addition, the experiment isdesigned to check whether these andsimilar but larger objects of great value(containers, semi-trailers) can be localizedat least roughly, i.e. down to a few hun-dred metres, in the event of their beingstolen. Equipping miniaturized receiverswith a back-channel transmitter of a fewhundred milliwatts to connect it to thespace station would permit just that.

In March 2002, the transmitters wereactivated, and time data were receivedby the ground station for the first time. The first experimental phase was conclud-ed in December 2004, and the scientificdata recorded during that period wereused to optimize the signals transmitted, and to develop an all-digital receiver with a hardware-integrated decodingalgorithm.

For the second experimental phase, themodulation of the transmitter, which isgenerated by software alone, was modi-fied so that signal attenuation is com-pensated on board the ISS, at least in part.In addition, some electronic replacementcomponents were updated to state-of-the-art level, and the upgraded systemwas installed on board the ISS. Now thatthe electronics have been replaced bythe ISS crew in the autumn of 2005, the system will go into semi-commercialoperation, a company will be establishedto operate it, and receivers on the groundwill be miniaturized further. The systemwill be ready for full-scale operation bythe time the ISS is complete.

SchulexperimentÖl-EMULSION im Weltall

Koordinatoren: Y. Nini, H.W. Ripken (beide DLR Raumfahrt-Agentur, Bonn)

A SchoolExperimentOIL EMULSION in Space

Coordinators: Y. Nini, H.W. Ripken (both DLR Space Agency, Bonn)

This experiment is designed to lead lower-grade pupils towards formulating theirfirst scientific hypothesis. For this purpose,Thomas Reiter in space and teachers andpupils on Earth will conduct the sameexperiment, one in weightlessness, theothers under the influence of gravity. Theexperiment involves water and oil sealedinside a transparent container.

The astronaut and the pupils will keepshaking the container until the waterand the oil have mixed. First off, thepupils will observe how water and oilmix and separate again under theinfluence of gravity. Secondly, they willform their own hypothesis about thecourse the process will take in microgra-vity. The answer will be given later on inthe children’s and youth programme ofthe Second Channel of German Television(ZDF), when Thomas Reiter will demon-strate what happens in weightlessness. After the mix of the two liquids has beenleft to stand for some time, the differentdegrees of segregation will begin toemerge. The differences observed in thebehaviour of the two liquids in space andon Earth will form the basis for schoollessons on subjects like buoyancy, density, and – for the older pupils – viscosity, sur-face tension, and wetting characteristics.

Teachers will be supplied with documen-tation containing modular learning unitswhich they may use to introduce andelaborate the experiment in their lessons. On the Internet, pupils will find similarmaterial designed to arouse their curiosi-ty and interest by providing additionalbackground information. One of themain purposes of the experiment is tointroduce pupils to the fundamental ele-ments of scientific investigation: Preciselyand carefully documenting the setup ofan experiment, forming and substantiat-ing a hypothesis and, ultimately, com-paring that hypothesis with the resultsobtained, and drawing the necessaryconclusions.

Getting these four fundamental elementsacross, namely observing a process, de-scribing it precisely and in detail, forminga hypothesis, and substantiating it, is oneof the major concerns of the DLR SpaceAgency. Moreover, the experiment isdesigned as an experience with a positiveimpact on the pupils’ minds: Research isthrilling, and it is our future.

What else fromGermany is thereon Board the ISS?ROKVISS – the Intelligent Robot

The German technology experiment called ROKVISS (robotics component veri-fication on the ISS) serves to test highly-integrated modular robotic componentsin space conditions. At the same time, it serves to demonstrate a variety of newcontrol methods in automatic as well as in the so-called telepresence mode. ROKVISS was developed by DLR’sOberpfaffenhofen Institute of Roboticsand Mechatronics in cooperation withthe German industry (Astrium, Kayser-Threde, von Hoerner & Sulger). Launchedinto orbit on December 24, 2004, therobotic arm was mounted on the outerwall of the ISS in February 2005. Theexperiment has been running for aroundtwo years now, with the arm being controlled not by the astronauts onboard but by an experimental computerinstalled inside the ISS and/or directly by researchers on Earth. The mission is carried out in collaboration with theRussian ROSKOSMOS Space Agency and the Russian company RKK Energia.

It mainly aims to promote the develop-ment of new complex robots for servicein space. Work will continue, and thereare plans to use the system in future in-orbit service missions.
