Take your child’s education“Outside the Box” with Hewitt . . .

Balance Character, Academics, Work, and ServiceAcademics are only one important aspect of your children’s education.Strong moral character, self-discipline, and good manners will producea person others enjoy being with. A strong work ethic and a servant’sheart help provide balance.

Personalize Your Home EducationJust because your child is eight, it doesn’t mean he or she will fitinto a third-grade box. Consider your student’s skills, not chrono-logical age. Challenge his/her mind, but enable your child to suc-ceed. What are your student’s interests? A packaged “grade-three”curriculum doesn’t take any of these into consideration.

Encourage Home School, Not School at HomeFirsthand experiences will excite your student’s desire for learning.

Great literature will help mature reasoning and understanding. Manyparents switch to Hewitt because they have been burned out by an

overly-structured academic curriculum. If you and your children arenot enjoying your homeschooling, you need to make some changes.

Develop a Mind for a Lifetime of UseStudents achieve excellence through a combination of

enthusiasm, hard work, and the use of superior resources. Youcan create enthusiastic students by praising specific skills and

encouraging them to do their best even at a young age. Hewittoffers a balanced, flexible, and complete approach to home-

schooling. A lifelong, whole-hearted learner will be your result.

If . . .u you can grade daily work, grammar, and math

just fine, but find it difficult to grade compo-sitions . . .

u you think your child would respond better to an external evaluator . . .

u you want to make sure that your child is pre-pared for high school level work . . .

. . . Try Hewitt’s Junior High Program

Hewitt’s Junior High School Program

Hewitt’s Junior High Program is the half-way step from a freer elementary approach to our more structured senior high program. While you are still strengthening language and math skills, your students should be learning to take more responsibility for their work.

Hewitt’s Junior High Handbook guides you through deciding which books to use and explains what to do eachquarter. If you still are uncertain as to which books are best, call or email your counselor.

PASS Tests taken near the beginning of your school year identify goals and teaching suggestions for weak areaswhile tests taken at the end of the year show academic progress.

Phone and email counseling give you the opportunity to contact a Hewitt counselor who can answer your teach-ing questions or help guide you to the answers.

Four times during your schooling year, you will send us samples of your student’s work as explained in your hand-book and/or syllabi. Based on these samples and the PASS test results, one of our counselors will prepare writtenevaluations of your student’s work, including teaching suggestions and letter grades or credit for each subject. Ifyour student has mastered that grade’s skills, a Certificate of Completion will be issued.

SINGLE-COURSE OPTION

Your student may enroll in any junior high course.

SINGLE-COURSE OPTION WITH HIGH-SCHOOL CREDIT

Perhaps your student is ready for high-school level sci-ence, math, or English, but not other classes. Or, maybeyou are certain your student will be enrolling in our high-school program and would like to get some of the easierclasses like health or state history out of the way. Youcan enroll in any class(es) of your choice in our Single-Course program; your student will receive high schoolcredit if the course is at a high school level (Math: Alge-bra 1 or higher; Science: Biology or higher). Studentsmust follow the appropriate high school syllabi. At theend of the student's first high-school year with us, thesecredits will be put on his or her transcript.

The more polished their writingbecomes, the easier the transition to high school will be. PASS Testing for Grades 3–8

The PASS was designed for parents to administer at home, greatlyreducing the stress level of testing. The PASS is untimed, which helps students to relax.Students can test within the range of their abilities in each subject.

On most achievement tests, where the difficulty of the items variesgreatly, students are frequently presented with items that are eithertoo easy or too hard, creating problems in assessing academicachievement. Testing results show overall achievement as well as performance in

reading, math, and language. Home-schooling parents will appreci-ate the suggestions given for reaching the goals in each of theseareas. The test is standardized and children’s scores are compared with

both national and home-schooling populations, meaning the scoresare equated to those of public-school students taking one of the nationally-normed tests.

WHAT IS IT?The PASS Test was de-veloped specifically forhome schoolers. Likeother achieve-ment tests, the PASSestimatesstudentachieve-ment inreading, math, and lan-guage. New York, NorthCarolina, Georgia,Washington, and Alaskahave approved thePASS for purposes ofstate reporting. Inother states requiringtesting, check with yourlocal school district.

TESTING SCHEDULEWhile many parentstest only once eachschool year, testingtwice yearly is the mostaccurate measure ofstudent learning. PASSTests can be ordered atany time during the

year, but must be atleast six months apart. You have four weeksafter receiving the test-

ing materials inwhich to ad-

minister thetest. Oncetestingmaterials

are returnedto Hewitt, ex-

pect to receivethe detailed analysiswithin three to fourweeks.

INTERNATIONALCost Upon Request. Please email or fax for aquote.
