Yokohama G30 plan

Having set a target of reducing waste 30% in FY2010 (compared to

FY2001), the City of Yokohama worked with residents and businesses

on separating waste and recycling.

<Measures to reduced business waste>

• Stopped collecting used paper that can be recycled

• Inspect garbage at incineration plants

• Introduced an award system for leading companies in waste reduction

• Provided guidance to companies and conducted on-site inspections

Efforts to Reduce Waste

Waste was reduced by more than 43%, exceeded the original target

substantially.

( Especially, business waste was reduced more than 50%.)

Ecological Cities as Economic Cities (Eco2 Cities)-Best Practices in Urban Development and Management-

Yokohama was nominated by the World Bank as one of the first six Eco2 Cities, which display the best global practices for balance of ecological sustainable development and economic urban growth.

Yokohama is highly evaluated for its various practices aiming to develop cities in harmony with the environment and the economy, such as for waste management (G30). The first Eco2 Cities international conference was held in Yokohama in October 2010.

Other Eco2 Cities: Curitiba (Brazil), Stockholm (Sweden), Singapore, Brisbane (Australia), Auckland ( New Zealand)
