The Client: Sussex Health Care (SHC)is an independent group of care homesrun by a highly professional andexperienced management team underthe overall guidance of its Policy Group.SHC aims to be the leading provider ofresidential and nursing care in theSussex area. Central to this objective is adetermination to provide the highestquality of care based on the needs ofthe individual and delivered by a first-class professional team.

The Challenge: Responsibility formarketing is shared across theorganisation, at its central base as well asat the care homes it runs. Seniormanagement at SHC wanted toinvestigate ways of enhancing marketingskills throughout the team, so theyproposed the idea of offering acertificated, university-standardmarketing module to its care homemanagers and their administrators.

The Result: We delivered a certificatedmarketing module on site to staff atSussex Health Care that was so wellreceived that we are looking to set upan on-going training initiative with theorganisation. The module was deliveredover three days and focused oncustomer care as well as marketing.Participants received a certificate inWelcome Management and were giventhe opportunity to be individuallyassessed and to gain 15 credits towardsa Foundation Degree. The programme’scontents were based on a module fromour Day Release Degree, but becauseof the flexible approach we applied, theparticipants were easily able to applytheir learning to their specific roleswithin the organisation. SHC welcomedthe opportunity for staff to focusspecifically on this area, with staffempowered to undertake marketingactivities showcasing the uniqueness of their particular care home and the specialist services available to service users.

The Client: Founded in 1997 by PaulHurrion, a Chichester alumnus, QuinticConsultancy Limited specialises in sportsvideo analysis software, sportsbiomechanics and performance analysisconsultancy. Quintic’s analysis, productsand services are used by a range of eliteathletes and teams, ranging from golfersRory McIlroy and Padraig Harrington, toOlympic Gold winner Steve BackleyOBE, and Manchester United FC.

The Challenge: Quintic required on-going biomechanics expertise toundertake research and analysis for aseries of different projects. They alsorequired the use of laboratory facilitiesand technical support.

The Result: The first collaboration withQuintic, which took place in 2006, sawour leading biomechanics experts DrMike Lauder and Dr Neal Smithcollaborate with the InternationalCricket Council (ICC) to assess thelegality of the bowling action in some ofthe world’s leading cricketers.By capturing the bowling action usingseveral high-speed video camerascapturing 200 images per second, theteam were able to reconstruct thebowler’s action as an animation in threedimensions. This allowed them tomeasure if the bowler had extended hisarm during the delivery above thetolerance limit of 15 degrees set by the ICC.

In 2011, Neal carried out tests on RealMadrid superstar Cristiano Ronaldo aspart of a Sky Sports documentary.Using the same body-mappingtechnology, Neal was able to analyseRonaldo’s famous free-kick technique.

More recently, Neal has assisted in thetesting of Quintic software thatinvestigates the speed and spin of afootball during set pieces and can beused to analyse performance andimprove technique.
