We are going to look specifically at five regions/areas of India to work out why some places are rich, while others are poor:

- The Mumbai Region- The Punjab Region- Kerala- Himalayas and the Thar Desert- Shanty Towns of the Cities

Mumbai Region [One third of all government taxes come from this region alone]

It attracts much industry due to :-Best transport system (good roads, railways, port and international airport)-Best telecommunications (telephone, fax and internet)-Educated and English speaking workforce-Government investment eg. Setting up IT parks

Punjab Region [Much higher than average – only 2% poverty rate]

Its farming is prosperous:-Fertile alluvial soil-Most mechanised and irrigated farms in India-Benefitted most from the Green Revolution

Kerala [best according to social indicators]

- The state uses its money to improve people’s quality of life- The farms are no bigger than 10 hectares to allow a more equal society.

Himalayas and Thar Desert [40% poverty rate which is one of the worst in the world]:

-It is very remote with poor roads and railways meaning a lack of industry and commercial farming.-Climate problems make the areas less attractive for development.-Low literacy rates (below 50% in Bihar)

Very poor quality of life in the Shanty towns eg. Dharavi in Mumbai

- This is because the city authorities cannot provide housing, sanitation, water etc. for the rapidly growing population.
