DEVELOPMENT DIARY MAGAZINE ADVERTISEMENT To begin editing my photograph for me and my partners magazine advertisement, i first opened the application Adobe Photoshop and went to FILE>OPEN>MY PICTURES and chose the image that we wanted. I then duplicated the background layer so that if i made any mistakes, i could always return to the original image. Next i made some simple standard changes to the duplicate layer by changing the Levels and the Curves. To complete this step i went to IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>LEVELS & IMAGE>ADJUSTMENTS>CURVES. By dragging the arrows at the bottom of the Levels allowed me to change the darkness and light within the image and by making a slight S shape in the Curves mades the darker parts of the image darker and the lighter parts lighter. In the mock up of our magazine advertisement, we had a portraiture image but in our actual shoot, we got a landscape image. This meant that we had to change the size of the picture so that it would be a double page advertisement. To do this we clicked CTRL>ALT>I and changed the width and height to the standard magazine, double page measurements of w=42cm and h=27.9cm. Now that this was done, we could move on to adding everything else in but before we did we thought about the colours and tones within the image. Previously in our questionnaire we had asked what kind of colours people in our target market preferred and we stuck to them throughout the making. In the digi-pak, we used an Action in Adobe Photoshop to give a vintage atmosphere to it and to keep our products consistent; we did the same in our magazine advertisement. To get to actions we clicked the history icon in the top right hand corner then clicked on the Action button. To get the same action as previously used, we clicked on Forgotten Flowers and clicked the ‘Play’ button at the bottom of the box. The two images to the left show the result of the action. The top image is what the photograph looked like when the action was complete, however, we thought that it looked too

To begin editing my photograph for me and my partners magazine advertisement, i first opened the application Adobe Photoshop and went to FILE>OPEN>MY PICTURES and chose the image that we wanted. I then duplicated the background layer so that if i made any mistakes, i could always return to the original image. Next i made some simple standard changes to

the duplicate layer by changing the Levels and the Curves. In the mock up of our magazine

advertisement, we had a portraiture image but in our actual shoot, we got a landscape image. This meant that we had to change the size of the picture so that it would be a

double page advertisement. To get the same action as previously used, we clicked on Forgotten Flowers and clicked the ‘Play’ button at the

bottom of the box.

The two images to the left show the result of the action. The top image is what the photograph looked like when the action was complete, however, we thought that it looked too

yellow so we took the opacity down to 68% which is what the bottom image shows. The next thing we added

was a square by using the Rectangle Tool and changed the colour to a dark brown to match the colour of the photograph. When we tried placeing the box on the picture it did’nt look right as it covered the models legs. To

change this we went to IMAGE>CANVAS SIZE and then changed the height to 35cm so that there was extra space at the bottom. Since this left whitc space we used the Clone Stamp tool to ‘copy & paste’ parts of the road into it to make it looke like one image. After this we re-positioned the box and added the text onto it. This was very easy and simple because all we had to do was refer back to our mock up for the text.

Now that we had the text on the box, we needed to make it look more like a

professional magazine. For this we used simple lines and shapes and placed

them alongside the text. The simple text and shapes look good but to add

more style to the advertisement we added a Drop shadow effect on the text

and shapes. As the text in the box was made to promote the album we

obviously had to include a picture of the

album cover, which we took from our

digi-pak. Like before we also added the

Drop Shadow effect to the cover.

The next thing to add was the masthead which was the name of the band ‘Secondhand Serenade’.

After adding it to the top of the page, the text looked too dark against the colour of the trees so we had

to change it to a lighter colour. This looked better but it was still quite difficult to read. To make it

easier we added another drop shadow but made the distance of the shadow travel further out. To finish

the magazine advertisement off we used the Paint Brush tool and painted around the corners of the

image. Next we went to FILTER>NOISE>ADD NOISE and then

clicked on FILTER>BLUR>GAUSSIAN BLUR. By using the Gaussian Blur effect, meant that the black was not opaque and bended into the rest of the photo. The final outcome of the magazine advertisement is shown below.
