Retention-evacuation type toilets are standard fittings in aircrafts & developed railway systems

Conventional Vacuum Toilet system requires ground handling facilities (GHF) for evacuation of human waste

Fitment of 80 Nos. of Vacuum Toilets is planned in 2015-16

A hybrid of Vacuum and Bio-toilet is under development

DEVELOPMENT OF VACUUM TOILETS FOR COACHES

1/10th water consumption of

conventional toilets

A PARADIGM SHIFT - FROM “PERIODIC” TO “CONDITION” BASED MAINTENANCE

Condition Based Maintenance

Condition of vital components of bogies monitored continuously using targeted sensors. Maintenance decisions proactively taken to prevent line failures using Degradation modelling and trend analysis. Bogie vibrations, bearing temperature, etc. are monitored using onboard accelerometer and temperature sensors.

Trackside Inspection Systems for Monitoring of

Rolling Stock condition High-speed cameras using optical, Laser and Infrared Imaging system used for online inspection of bogies to detect defective, missing & hanging parts of rolling stock without needing to stop the trains.

System is Scalable to add more sensors to capture and monitor data of all critical components in real-time through “Cloud Computing”

Gives real-time indication of safety of trains while on run. Captured data is stored for detailed root-cause failure analysis at maintenance depots and control rooms.

2400 HP MULTI GEN SET LOCOMOTIVE

MULTI-GENSET LOCOMOTIVES - A NOVEL CONCEPT Involves use of two or more small engines as compared to a single large engine in conventional locomotives

These locos will help to reduce the fuel consumption by about 20 per cent thereby decreasing carbon footprint in train operations. Two prototypes manufactuired and functioning already

AC Unit for Loco cab

COMFORT FOR LOCO PILOTS Air Conditioning of Loco Cabs (HVAC)

All newly built locomotives from DLW will be turned out with AC cabs from this year onwards.

Schematic of loco pilot cabin

NOISE REDUCTION IN DIESEL LOCO CABS

Acoustic scheme applied in roof, side

walls, floor & back panel Reduces fatigue for loco pilot

Existing Noise level in the rear cabin is around 96 dB(A). Aim is to reduce interior cabin noise to 85 dB(A).

DLW has tried new acoustic insulation scheme to reduce noise level in the crew cabin

Trial results are encouraging. Noise level has reduced to 90 dB(A)

with new acoustic insulation

OTHER PROJECTS UNDER DEVELOPMENT Dual Mode Locomotives

Dual Mode Locomotives work with diesel engine as a prime-mover in non-electrified routes and work as an electric loco by drawing power from OHE in

electrified routes. Thus dual mode provides the advantages of electric traction in the electrified territory while having flexibility of diesel loco.

Where OHE gets affected, dual mode loco provides excellent operational flexibility to work

Reduction in the detention time of locomotive and rakes at the traction

change points.

Loco cab video and voice recording system

Would allow confirming the nature of crew communications & the

dynamics of crew actions and interactions. Accident investigation made easier.

RDSO is conducting trials in this system and report is expected

shortly.
