no municipal water network, only at Pajwhich served app. 5 houses, but the watercould not be used for drinkingtwo drilled well I Paj 1 Kizhicommon wells, mainly of wooden structurealso lake water used for drinkingbuckets stolen everybody used their own => problems with hygiene

Results: Toilets

mostly waterless toiletsmainly no tight containers which could be easilyemptiedusually there where no ventilation or separation of liquidsmainly no composting agent usedmainly no possibility to wash handssome cases sewage lorry emptied the toilets, butwhere the sludge was disposed not certain

in private households toilet waste wascompostedmaintainance problems: no emptying and/ordifficult to empty because of the structure of building, container and seat holes didn´t fitmixed waste amongst toilet waste, cleaningwith clorine, wastewaters disposed to toiletwaste container => composting impossible

Hoping to continue this year, still waiting for decisions from Ministry for Foreign Affairs of Finland, Neighbouring area cooperation by NGOsPaj renewal of wells, renewal plans for public estates and one example of private household solutionsKizhi, testing one of toilet models possibly first outside the turist area

The Enhancement of the Use of Dry Toilets in the Republic of Karelia

new project financed by Ministery of EnvironmentYM30/413/2008starts at FebruaryFinnish dry toilet manufactures Lassila&Tikanoja and Raita Environment will supply the equipmentsTotal budget 77 850 €support the use of dry toilets in the republic of Karelia by two examples of modern Finnish dry toilets: test sites Derevjannoe children camp and Sholtozero home museum
