Spring 2014 Kennesaw Mayor & Council Mark Mathews Cris Welsh Tim Killingsworth Leonard Church Debra Williams Jim Sebastian Mayor Council Post 1 Council Post 2 Council Post 3 Council Post 4 Council Post 5 404-392-8554 678-266-0885 678-873-7146 404-441-4985 404-849-0948 404-822-5407 Two major development projects on opposite sides of the city that will change the face of Kennesaw are making recent headlines. It has long been a major goal of city leaders to attract investment and development in the downtown district. The mixed use project envisioned when property was acquired at Main Street and Watts Drive will begin construction in the spring. This project includes luxury rental apartments as well as retail space. The developer, South City Partners, is the same firm that worked with the city on the West 22 student housing project on Cherokee Street. In conjunction with this project, this past March, bonds were sold which will cover the cost of new parking facili- ties within the development. A deck will provide park- ing for apartment renters, diners, shoppers, and City Hall customers and staff. Additional public parking will be provided in new on-street spaces and a surface lot. The bond issuance was the final step that laid the ground- work for the project to finally get underway. The build-out is expected to last 19 months and be completed by the summer of 2015. Although you can anticipate some traffic issues on both Main Street and Watts Drive during con- struction, it will be well worth the inconvenience to see the downtown district come alive. The second major project involves one of the busiest cor- ners in Cobb County, Cobb Parkway at Barrett Parkway. Atlanta-based Fuqua Development has 52 acres under con- tract and plans to build a 450,000 square foot retail/town- home development. Whole Foods Market, the natural and organic foods grocery store, has committed to be one of the shopping center anchors. It is hoped another anchor will be a big-box sporting goods store, and demographic studies done by the developer will help them decide what mix of stores will work best. The location of the property situated only a mile east of two busy interstates and easily acces- sible to north and west Cobb County insures that other very attractive retail businesses will sign on to the project. The current use of the property is Castle Lake Mobile Home Park; the developer will be required to come up with a relocation plan for the park’s tenants. Fuqua plans to make final decisions on the project this summer, and if they are able to close on all the property required, site work will start in the fall. However, don’t look for any store openings in the near future—the site work alone is expected to take at least a year. But by 2016, this development will offer some exciting new options for shopping and dining as well as numerous job opportunities. Development Projects Make Headlines
