Provider Spotlight July 2017 — Karen Hook
By Gretchen Peters
This spring Karen (pictured with her husband) added another home to her responsibilities as Home
Manager. I thanked Karen for all her help and she had the most genuine response. Karen said taking on the
home has “produced a lot of positives in making a difference in People’s Lives that Matter! More
importantly that the differences are so welcomed and appreciated by those
we serve!” Karen’s longevity speaks for itself and we congratulate her on
being this month’s staff spotlight.
According to CRSI Program Specialist Megan Ballard – ‘Karen has
been with CRSI since 2008 and worked with the ladies prior to that at
RMS. Karen is amazing at what she does. We can always depend on Karen
to keep us in line; they don’t call her Captain Hook for nothing! She can be
firm when needed, but is always there to offer encouraging words. The
ladies absolutely adore her and I do too.’
And according to CRSI Program Specialist Leslee Smith -- Karen
is all around amazing. She is always willing to help. She has taken on a
home and it has flourished. The consumers adore her and have done a 180!
She is our go to because she is so dependable and reliable. You know any
tasks given to her will be done with pride and always in the best interest of
our people.

Special Olympians earn State hardware
COLUMBUS – An alphabetic gathering of medals – from A to Zeeck.
Marlyn Zeeck has always had fun at the annual Ohio Special Olympics State

Zeeck was Madison County’s only double gold medal winner this year as she
competed on the Tigers Track and Field Team. Zeeck earned first place in both the
Softball Throw and 100m Walk. The State Games were held on the campus of The

In addition to Zeeck, spotlighting the gold medal recipients were the

Ohio’s Employment First
An Easy Read Guide
Ohio’s Employment First law says that people with
developmental disabilities have a right to choose to work in
their community.
Ohio’s Employment First law does not say that everyone with a developmental disability has to
work. It does say that people with developmental disabilities must be given the choice to work in their
community.
Ohio’s Employment First law says that people with developmental disabilities should have
support if they decide they want to work in the community.
Ohio’s Employment First law says that a person with a developmental disability …
* can have a plan that helps them choose the kind of job they want.
* can get help finding a job,
* and can get help while they are working.
The Employment First law is important because working can help people feel good about
themselves.
Working is one way for people to …
* connect with new people,
* make new friends,
* feel like they are a part of their community,
* feel valued,
* and earn money.
Your service plan lists the services that support you, things like help with cooking meals or
help with medications. Every service plan has to talk about where you are on The Path to Community
Employment.
The Path to Community Employment is a plan to help you figure out the kind of a job you
might like and how to find that job in the community.
You can read more about The Path to Community Employment at OhioEmploymentFirst.org.
Service providers that work with you to find jobs or job training have to write a report for you
each year that lists all the ways they worked with you.
