Accessing Device ManagerAside from using DeviceManager as a stand alone application, DeviceManager can be accessed from CPS, ExamView, FlowandWorkSpace.

Opening Device Manager from the Notification Area (PC)

1 Click in the notification area.2 Select Device Manager.

Opening Device Manager from Dash Home (Linux Ubuntu 14.04)

IMPORTANTIn order to use Turning Technologies whiteboards (DualBoard, Touch Board and Touch BoardPlus), Linux users must install and run the Ubuntu GNOME environment. Refer toOpeningDevice Manager in Ubuntu GNOME on page 6.

1 Click Dash Home and search forDevice Manager.2 Select Device Manager.

NOTEIf File > Exit is selected, DeviceManager closes.To reopen DeviceManager, search for the program in DashHome or follow the path: Home > eInstruction > DeviceManager > DeviceManager.

Opening Device Manager in Ubuntu GNOMETurning Technologies whiteboards must be used in the Ubuntu GNOME environment. Follow the steps below to installGNOME and open DeviceManager.

Before You Begin

Install the GNOME environment:

1 Ubuntu 12.04 users: open Terminal and run one the following commands:l sudo apt-get install gnome -session -fallback

l sudo apt-get install gnome -session -panel

2 Ubuntu 14.04 users: open Terminal and run the following command:l sudo apt-get install gnome -session -flashback

3 Ubuntu 12.04 users must log in with GNOME Classic (No effects). Ubuntu 14.04 users must log in with GNOMEFlashback (Metacity)

How to open Device Manager...

1 Click Applications and select Education.2 Select Device Manager.

Device Manager MenuDeviceManager has several functions and optionsthat can be accessed from the notification area(PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Dash Home (Linux).

IMPORTANTMenu options differ depending onyour operating system (OS) andinstalled programs.

CPS

To open CPS, select the CPS option from theDeviceManager menu. CPS allows you to create

and/or import classes, students, lessons, assignments and standards, as well as administer response sessions and generatereports. CPS requires the use of CPS IR, Pulse or Spark, or ResponseCard RF, RF LCD or NXT, clickers and theirappropriate receivers.

Curtain

The Curtain tool hides the current page in theWorkSpaceAnnotationwindow, orhides the current desktop screen inMouseMode. Handles on all four sides of theCurtain make it possible to “open” the curtain to reveal a portion of the underlyingdisplay, while keeping the rest of the window covered. Click and drag the sizing squares on each corner of the Curtain tochange the size of the curtain.

l The default color of the Curtain is black. Click to change the color.

l Click to expand the Curtain to full size after it has beenmoved or sized.

l Click and drag the Transparency slider to the left to add transparency to the color.

l Click to close the Curtain. The Curtain tool will remember the last color and transparency selections for its nextuse.

Device Manager

DeviceManager automatically loads and establishes communication between Turning Technologies software (CPS,ExamView, Flow, WorkSpace) and hardware (clickers, whiteboards, Mobi). To access the application, select DeviceManagerfrom the Devicemanager menu.

ExamView Test Generator

Select the ExamView Test Generator option to create tests, quizzes, study guides and worksheets usingmultiple questionformats, pictures, tables, graphs, charts and other multimedia elements. Upload question banks and tests to LearningManagement Systems (LMS) such as ANGEL, Blackboard and Blackboard Vista.

ExamView Test Manager

Select the ExamView Test Manager option tomanage class rosters, collect data and generate reports.

ExamView Test Player

The ExamView Test Player is an application that allows participants to take tests and view study guides or worksheets. Selectthe ExamView Test Player option to open the ExamView Test Player.

ExamView Import Utility

Selecting the ExamView Import Utility opens a program that converts RTF files to ExamView question banks.

Exit

Select Exit to close the DeviceManager application.

Flow

Select the Flow option from the DeviceManager mainmenu to open the Flow assessment software. Flow permits polling inany environment and is compatible with most Turning Technologies hardware. Flow can be used with Microsoft PowerPoint®,Microsoft Word®, ApacheOpenOffice™ andmany other software applications. Flow communicates with both clickers andvirtual response pads (vPads).

Lesson Builder

Lesson Builder is installed with Flow, allowing for the creation, modification and adaption of Flow lessons. To open LessonBuilder, select the Lesson Builder option from the DeviceManager mainmenu.

On-screen Keyboard

TheOn-screen Keyboard allows for entering text while using theDualBoard, Touch Board or Mobi. Text can be entered in anapplication file or on a page in theWorkSpaceAnnotationwindow. Indicate where to add the typed text by clicking thelocation in theAnnotationwindow or in the application file. Tobegin typing, tap anOn-screen Keyboard key with the pen.

Restart

Select Restart to reopen DeviceManager.

Record and Playback

Use the Record and Playback tool to record and playback events, with sound, as they occur. Record audio and screen eventsand store them in an AVI file for playback.

Click to begin recording and open theCapture Optionwindow.

Click to stop recording, open theOn-screen Keyboard and open theSave AVI Filewindow.

Click to pause the recording.

Click to play the current recording.

Using the Recorder

1 Click in the notification area (PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Dash Home (Linux Ubuntu 14.04) and select Recordand Playback.

NOTELinux Ubuntu 12.04 users can access the Turning Technologies icon from themenu bar.

2 Click .TheCapturewindow is displayed.

3 Select one of the following options:l Partial - This option allows you to select a specific area on your computer screen to be recorded. Click and dragthemouse over the desired area to set the recording window.

l Screen - This option records the entire area of your computer screen.

4 Complete the taskwhile the Recorder documents your actions.

5 Click .The recording ends, the On-screen Keyboard opens and theSave AVI Filewindow opens.Optionally, check the box labeledE-mail after save.

6 Name the file and click Save.If you checked the box labeledE-mail after save, your default email program opens a new email message with therecording as an attachment.

Select Language

DeviceManager offers multiple language support. The System Default option uses the language settings determined by youroperating system (OS).

1 Click in the notification area (PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Dash Home (Linux Ubuntu 14.04) and select SelectLanguage.


2 Select the appropriate language from theSelect Languagewindow.Alternatively, the language can be changed from within DeviceManager. OpenDevice Manager, click File and selectPreferences. Select the desired language from the Language drop-downmenu.

Spotlight

Use the Spotlight tool to create interest and draw attention to an area of the screen. When the Spotlight tool is selected, a circleappears in the center of a black curtain. The spotlight opening is transparent and reveals what is directly beneath it on thescreen.

1 Click in the notification area (PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Dash Home (Linux Ubuntu 14.04) and select Spotlight.

NOTELinux Ubuntu 12.04 users can access the Turning Technologies icon fromthemenu bar.

TheSpotlight window opens.2 Click and drag theMove cursor to move the spotlight around the screen.

3 Optionally, click to adjust the shape, color and transparency.

4 Optionally, click to adjust the size of the spotlight opening.

5 Click to close the Spotlight window.

Whiteboard Mode

WhenWhiteboardMode is selected, all notes made on the DualBoard, Touch Board or Touch Board Plus can be captured andsaved as pages withinWorkSpace for distribution, without the use of the projector.

Starting Whiteboard Mode

1 Click located in the notification area (PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Dash Home (Linux Ubuntu 14.04) and selectWhiteboard Mode.


Lesson Mode vs. Whiteboard Mode - LessonMode has two-way communication. The computer desktop imageprojects onto the DualBoard’s surface and the input is mirrored on the projected image. The communication inWhiteboardMode is one-way between the DualBoard and computer. A projector is not necessary and computer input isnot communicated back onto the DualBoard.

Capturing Annotations on the DualBoard

1 Place the cap on the pen and click on theDualBoard Features Menu.

2 Click twice. The electronic image of the DualBoard on your computer will now be blank.3 Erase the dry-erase ink from the DualBoard's surface, if using an uncapped pen.4 Annotate the new page.

WorkSpace

UsingWorkSpace requires a hardware configuration that includes a device (DualBoard, Touch Board, MobiView, etc.), aprojection surface (if you are not using a DualBoard or Touch Board), a video projector and a computer on which the software isinstalled.

There are several WorkSpace "modes," but the primary mode across all platforms is LessonMode. In LessonMode,participants can view the presentation while you interact with your computer or other projection surface such as DualBoard.The Annotation tools allow you to write and draw on the blank page. The Page tools create additional pages and theMultimediatools add a variety of multimedia files to the pages in the presentation file.

Connecting Student Response ReceiversThis chapter covers all Turning Technologies infrared (IR) and radio frequency (RF) receivers, including:

Connecting Receivers

IMPORTANTIt is recommended to avoid placing the receiver under a podium or desk. If necessary, use a USBextension cable tomake sure the receiver has a clear path and is not blocked by furniture.

1 Plug the receiver into an available USB port.

2 Click from the notification area (PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Dash Home (Linux Ubuntu 14.04) and select DeviceManager.


DeviceManager opens.

NOTEDeviceManager will automatically detect the device once connected and indicate asuccessful connection with a green checkmark.

3 Select the receiver image.

4 Optionally, click .TheProperties window is displayed.For more information about specific receiver properties, seeRRRF-02, 03 and 04 on page 23, CPS IR on page 24,CPS Pulse (CPS RF) on page 25 orPRS RF (Response RF) on page 28.

MobiViewTheMobiView and theMultiHub receiver, previously branded as theMobi receiver, are discussed in this chapter.

Connecting theMultiHub Receiver

IMPORTANTMobiView must be able to communicate with theWorkSpace software installed on yourcomputer. This communication link is established either by means of a USB connection orthrough wireless (RF). TheMultiHub receiver plugs into a USB port on the computer or a poweredUSB Hub.

1 Insert theMultiHub receiver into a USB port on the classroom computer.2 Turn on theMobiView by pressing the bluePower button on the top of the unit.

ThemessageAttempting to Connect is displayed on theMobiView screen.3 When prompted, press the blue button on the receiver.4 TapContinue on theMobiView screen.5 When theMobiView connects to theMultiHub receiver, theHome Screen appears on theMobiView screen.

TIPIf themessage, Unable to Connect… is displayed, confirm theMobiView receiver has beeninserted into a working USB port.

6 In DeviceManager, select theMobiView image.

7 Optionally, click .TheProperties window is displayed.For more information onMobiView properties, seeMobiView on page 29.

Connecting the DualBoard via USB

1 Turn on your computer.2 Connect theUSB cable to the DualBoard controller box located on the back of the board. The controller box is located

on the bottom right of the board, if the board has already been hung up.3 Attach the other end of theUSB cable into a working USB port on your computer.

DeviceManager establishes connection with the DualBoard.

Connecting the DualBoardThe RF receiver works best when it is not plugged into a computer that is under a podium or a desk. If necessary, use a USBextension cable to remove the RF receiver from under furniture that may shield the RF signal.

1 Connect theAC/DC power adapter to the DualBoard controller box.2 Plug the opposite end of the AC/DC power adapter into awall outlet.3 Plug the end of theRJ12 cable into theDualBoard controller box located on the back of the board. The controller box

is located on the bottom right of the board, if the board has already been hung up.4 Slide theRF COM plastic grey holster over the board’s frame at the top of the DualBoard.5 Seat theRF COM into the plastic grey holster.6 Press thePower switch to theOn position.7 Plug theRF receiver into an available USB port on your computer.8 Press the pairing button on the RF COM. The blue light will begin to blink.9 Press the pairing button on the RF receiver.

IMPORTANTYou have twominutes to press the pairing button.

When the two devices have been successfully paired, the blue lights on the receivers will stop blinking and remain asolid blue.

Pairing the device is a one-time operation.


Device Manager 14

Connecting the Touch Board via USBThe Touch Board connects to your computer via a USB cable. A separate power supply is not necessary since the TouchBoard is powered through the USB connection.

1 Plug theUSB cable into theUSB port on the right side of the board.2 Plug the other end of theUSB cable into a workingUSB port on your

computer.

TIPA powered USB hubmay be used.

3 A red light at the bottom of the board indicates that the board is receivingpower through the USB cable. A blue light indicates the proximity of thepen to the board.

Connecting the Touch Board PlusTurning Technologies DeviceManager version 7.3 or higher must be installed on your computer prior to installing theWirelessKit.

TheMultiHub plugs into a USB port on your computer or a powered USB Hub. The RFCOM (Radio Frequency Communicator)plugs into a wall outlet while positioned in the RFCOM clip that slips over the frame at the side of the Touch Board Plus.

Pairing the device is a one-time operation.

1 Slide the plastic gray clip over the frame at the side of the Touch Board Plus.

2 Seat the RFCOM into the plastic gray clip.

3 Connect the appropriate end of the power cord into the power cord terminal and the opposite end into a nearby walloutlet.

4 Connect theUSB cable from the Touch Board Plus to the RFCOM .

5 Turn on theRFCOM power switch . The amber light will turn on to show a successful connection to the TouchBoard Plus.

6 Plug theMultiHub into a working USB port on your computer or a poweredUSB hub.7 Press the pairing button on theMultiHub. The blue light will begin to blink.

8 Press the pairing button on the RFCOM.

IMPORTANTYou have twominutes to press the pairing button.

When the two devices have been successfully paired, the blue light on the RFCOMwill stop blinking and remaina solid blue. The light will dim when connection to theMultiHub is lost.

CalibratingIn order for the DualBoard, Touch Board or Touch Board Plus to properly function, the boardmust be calibrated.

This section covers the following topics:

Calibrating the DualBoardThe DualBoardmust be calibrated in order to assure pen accuracy.

IMPORTANTLinux users must calibrate the DualBoard in the Ubuntu GNOME environment.

1 Turn on the DualBoard and the computer.2 Turn on the projector and, if necessary, adjust the image

to fit within the board’s active writing area.

3 Click on theDualBoard Features Menu .4 Using the pen, click each calibration target as it appears

on the blue calibration screen. A beep will sound with eachsuccessful click.

5 To cancel the calibration, press theEsc key on yourkeyboard or press the bottom rocker button on the pen. Torepeat a calibration point, press the top rocker button.

Alternatively, the DualBoard can be calibrated via DeviceManager. To calibrate the DualBoard from within DeviceManager:

a Click in the notification area (PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Applications (Ubuntu GNOME).b Select Device Manager.c Select the DualBoard device from theDeviceManagerwindow.

d Select from the toolbar.e Follow the instructions on the calibration screen.

IMPORTANTIf the DualBoard and/or projector is moved, youmust recalibrate the board via theDualBoardFeatures Menu or from theCalibrate icon in DeviceManager.

Calibrating the Touch Board via Device ManagerRecommended for OS X and Linux platforms, as well as PC users who need to recalibrate Touch Board.

IMPORTANTLinux users must calibrate the DualBoard in the Ubuntu GNOME environment.

The steps below walk you through performing a calibration via DeviceManager. Aside from using these steps on anOS X orLinux platform, you can also perform them on a PC if youmoved the Touch Board. It is strongly recommended to recalibratethe Touch Board if the board or projector has beenmoved.

NOTEIf an error occurs during the calibration process, end the process and start over.

1 From your computer, right click/control-click in the notification area (PC)/Menu Extras area (Mac)/Applications(Ubuntu GNOME).

2 Select Device Manager.TheDeviceManagerwindow opens.

3 Select from theDeviceManagerwindow.

4 Select from the toolbar.TheCalibrationwindow opens.

5 Touch each target as it appears on the board.

TIPFor optimal accuracy, use a Touch Board pen during the calibration process.

NOTEIn addition to the DeviceManager calibration, Windows 7 and 8 requires a secondcalibration when using the Touch Board independent of WorkSpace. Refer toCalibratingthe Touch Board (Windows 7 and Windows 8) on page 16 for instructions on performingthe second calibration.

Calibrating the Touch Board (Windows 7 andWindows 8)

Before You Begin

Youmust have administrative privileges to perform the Touch Board 16 pt. calibration. After the initial 16 pt. calibration, a 4 pt.calibration can be performed by a non-administrative user. If you do not have administrative privileges, contact your ITdepartment.

1 From your computer, right-click in the notification area.2 Select Device Manager.

TheDeviceManagerwindow opens.3 Right/control-click from theDeviceManagerwindow.4 Click Touch Settings.

The Tablet PC Settings window opens.

5 From the Tablet PC Settings window, click Calibrate.

NOTEIf the board has been previously calibrated, click Reset to erase previously storedcalibration data.

6 Touch each target as it appears on the board.7 After the calibration, youmust save the calibration data by clickingYes from your keyboard or mouse.

NOTEThis calibration only needs to be performed once. If the Touch Board and/or projector ismoved, youmust perform both calibrations again.

Opening the Touch Board/Touch Board Plus Properties Window

1 Connect the Touch Board/Touch Board Plus via USB orWireless Kit.



DeviceManager opens.

NOTEDeviceManager automatically detects the device after it is connected and indicates asuccessful connection with a green checkmark.

3 Select the Touch Board/Touch Board Plus image and click .

TheProperties window is displayed.

Accessing Preferences

1 Plug the receiver into an available USB port or connect the DualBoard, Touch Board or Touch Board Plus via USB orWireless Kit.

PreferencesThePreferences tab displays options for the program language, HID/Bluetooth devices, pen smoothness and the Preferencessave location.

Language

Click the drop-downmenu to change the DeviceManager language. The default language is determined by the computer’soperating system (OS).

Options

l Scan Only USB HID Devices - DeviceManager will only search for Human Interface Devices (HID) when this box ischecked. Check this box if using the following devices: Pulse, Spark, Mobi, MobiView, DualBoard or Touch Board.

l Scan for ResponseCard Devices - DeviceManager will only search for Turning Technologies receivers when this boxis checked. Check this box if using the following devices: ResponseCard RF, RF LCD or NXT.

l Enable Bluetooth Devices - Check theEnable Bluetooth Devices box to enable Bluetooth devices. If the box isunchecked, all Bluetooth devices will be disabled.

l Clear Bluetooth Devices List - Clear all available devices from theBluetooth drop-downmenu.l The drop-downmenu lists all available Bluetooth devices within a radius around the Bluetooth receiver.l The checkbox resets after each use.

l Show First Look Window at Startup - Check theShow First Look Window at Startup box to assist new users withconnecting to DeviceManager.

Pen/Highlighter Preferences

Adjust the smoothness of the pen during annotation.

Device Preferences Location

Select an area to determine drawing boundaries.

l User Specific Preferences - If User Specific Preferences is selected, the device properties are saved for the user only.l System Wide Preferences - If System Wide Preferences is selected, the device properties are saved for all users.

Pen ButtonsFrom the Pen Buttons tab, the double-click interaction between the pen and DualBoard can be determined.

To select, click Lower Button orUpper Button and pair with an action from theMouse Events drop-downmenu.

Firmware UpdateClick the Firmware Update tab to check if a firmware updates available for connected devices.

Connect Click to manually connect a receiver to a device, i.e. Mobi receiver andMobiView.

Beep

Use theBeep feature to locate a device. The following devices are supported:

Set/Unset Autoconnect If Set Autoconnect is selected, DeviceManager will automatically connect the device. If UnsetAutoconnect is selected, the device will not be automatically connected.

Properties Click Properties to display information about the receiver.

Touch Settings ForWindows 7 and 8 only. Click Touch Settings to configureWindows touch settings.

Help MenuThe following options can be accessed from theHelp Menu:

AboutTheAboutwindow displays the current downloaded versions of DeviceManager, CPS, ExamView, Flow andWorkSpace (if installed). You will also find the Java version, OS and version, company address and website.Additionally, thememory usage is displayed at the bottom of the window.

ClearDeviceProperties

When selected, the following prompt is displayed:

l OK - Removes general device information such as name, manufacturer, model, serial port, firmwareversion of connected and previously connected devices.

l Cancel - Keeps current device preferences.

From the Log tab, details can be accessed regarding the historical data of all devices attached to the computer.
