BROWN DELIVERS SOLID DEBUT IN 5-2 WINTrenton, NJ – Goaltender Mike Brown received first-star honors Saturday

night in the Devils 5-2 win over Alaska, saving 34 of 36 shots in his Trenton debut and his first ECHL appearance since October 18, 2008. Opposite former Trenton goaltender Gerald Coleman, who leads the ECHL in shutouts, Brown slowed an Alaska attack which had scored 16 goals in its last four games. Appearing poised and polished, the 25-year-old veteran of over 100 professional games made important saves in crucial spots, with timely support from his teammates.

That support, offensively, came from Devils rookies. J.S. Berube had a goal and two assists, Ryan Hayes a goal and an assist, and Matt Lombardi a goal which started the scoring. Jeremy Akeson set up Lombardi’s goal by protecting the puck through the right wing circle. Lombardi took the backhand pass and blazed a slap shot past Coleman for a 1-0 Devils lead at 3:51 of the first. Taylor Vichorek also recorded an assist on Lombardi’s fourth goal of the season.

The Aces responded on the power play, and though Brown broke up one scoring opportunity with a smart poke check, the Aces cashed in at 15:40. Wayne, NJ native Bryan Miller redirected a centering feed from Brian Swanson with 19 seconds left on the extra-man chance to tie the score, 1-1. Moments later, Ryan Hayes restored Trenton’s lead with his fifth goal of the season. Taking the puck between the circles, Hayes made a move right and fired past Coleman’s glove, clinking off the crossbar and in. Matt Vokes, making his season debut, and J.S. Berube were awarded assists, and the Devils led 2-1. Trenton nearly extended its lead seconds later when Tony Zancanaro was stopped by Coleman on a semi-breakaway.

The Devils and Aces traded fruitless power plays in the second, but in the last five minutes of the period the Berube-Hayes-Vokes combination struck again. After Vokes dug it out of the left wing corner, the puck came to Hayes at the top of the left-wing circle and he connected with Berube battling his way in front from the left side of the goal. Coleman stopped Berube’s first shot, but the follow-up effort from the Matane, PQ native got through. The Devils 3-1 lead lasted but 52 seconds, with Alaska’s Gary Nunn scoring on a one-time shot from the high slot. Alaska’s leading assist man, Brian Swanson, started the play by circling behind the net and

making a long feed to the uncovered Nunn.Trailing by a goal, the Aces had a golden opportunity to tie the game

when midway through the third period J.S. Berube was called for a two-minute boarding penalty. Strong work by Brown and the Devils penalty killers denied the Aces on their last good chance at tying the game. The Devils put the game out of reach when Tony Zancanaro made the score 4-2 at 16:26, finishing off an odd-man rush with Ryan Ginand on a sequence started by Jeff Prough. Jeremy Akeson was rewarded for his gritty effort throughout the game by scoring an empty-net goal at 17:55 to cap Trenton’s 5-2 win.

The Devils improve to 7-7-0-1 while the Aces fall to 10-6-1-0, dropping their second decision in five games on their current eight-game road trip. The Devils are back in action Sunday, concluding their two-game season series with the defending Kelly Cup Champion Cincinnati Cyclones.

Goaltender Mike Brown defeated his former team, making 34 saves in his Devils debut.

T.J. Miller Q&ADefenseman T.J. Miller is in his first season with Trenton after spending the past four seasons with Northern Michigan University, where in four seasons, the Placentia, CA native played in 134 games, winning the team’s Don Waddell award as Top Freshman in 2006-07. Drafted by the New Jersey Devils in the fourth round (107 overall) in the 2006 NHL Entry Draft, Miller scored his first pro goal in the first period of Trenton’s October 28 victory over the Gwinnett Gladiators.

Q: What was your favorite NHL team growing up? Who was your favorite player? A: Well my favorite player was Wayne Gretzky because I was a huge Los Angeles Kings fan. Most guys I meet like Gretzky from his days with the Oilers, but I always remember him as a King.

Q: What is your favorite hockey movie? Your favorite non-hockey movie?A: Slap Shot. Hands down the best hockey movie ever. And for my favorite non-hockey movie, Dumb and Dumber is always good.

Q: What is your favorite vacation spot?A: Vegas. It’s only a couple hour drive from where I grew up. I can’t think of another place that would even come close.

Q: What is your favorite Thanksgiving food?A: Honey ham. Because of my career it has been a few years since I’ve been home for Thanksgiving, but I made my own honey ham this year and it wasn’t half bad.

Q: If you could meet three people, alive or dead, who would they be?A: Peyton Manning and Jim Carrey would be my first two. And for my third one? I don’t know, let me just say Brad Pitt. I’m not even sure why I’m saying him, but he’s the first person that came to mind.

T-Devils Jump to AHLGoaltender Jeff Lerg was signed to a

professional tryout contract by the AHL’s Albany Devils Friday to fill in for the injured Jeff Frazee.

Lerg, 24, is 5-3 in eight appearances for Trenton this season, with a goals-against average of 3.42 and a save percentage of .888. He appeared in two games for Trenton last season, winning his professional debut, 4-3, vs. Johnstown March 24. A Michigan State Spartan (CCHA) from 2005 through 2009, the Livonia, MI native served as team captain his senior year after leading MSU to a NCAA Championship in 2007 for the team’s first title since 1986.

Additionally, Trenton forwards Kory Nagy and Darcy Zajac were recalled by Albany Saturday afternoon.

Nagy, 21, returns to the AHL level after playing 31 games for New Jersey’s top developmental team in 2009-10. In his rookie season, he registered two goals and four assists. The Devils battle the Cincinnati Cyclones Sunday for the final time this season In their only prior meeting, Martin Nolet erased a 4-3 Cyclones third period lead with his first professional goal before Jeff Prough won the game for Trenton in overtime. Matt Lombardi also had a strong performance, scoring his first two professional goals in rapid succession, one on the power play and one 2:32 later while shorthanded. Since that meeting, Cincinnati has won six of ten games to improve its record to 7-6-5-1, giving the Cyclones 20 points and ranking them in first place of the Eastern Conference’s North Division.

In the Cyclones’ most recent game, they were beaten 3-2 by the Elmira Jackals Saturday night at Elmira’s First Arena for their first regulation loss since November 3. In the loss, Cincinnati played Elmira even through the first half of the game, but two Jackals goals spaced less than a minute apart in the second period by Yannick Tifu and Justin Donati buried the Cyclones in a two-goal hole that they were never able to climb out of. Barret Ehgoetz scored for Cincinnati to narrow Elmira’s lead to 3-2 25 seconds into the third period, but Jackals goaltender Marco Cousineau made 12 third period stops to strand the Cyclones a goal behind as time expired.

The Devils were also in action Saturday night, defeating the Alaska Aces 5-2 in the first meeting between the intra-conference rivals since the 2005 National Conference Finals. The star of the show for Trenton was goaltender Mike Brown, who saved 34 of 36 shots in his Trenton debut. Brown signed with the Devils last week when Dave Caruso was recalled to Albany, and got the start Saturday when Jeff Lerg also got the call up to Albany after an injury to Jeff Frazee. Offensively, the Devils were paced by five different goal scorers Saturday, as Matt Lombardi, Ryan Hayes, J.S. Berube, Tony Zancanaro and Jeremy Akeson found the net, with Matt Vokes recording two assists in his season debut.

Following Sunday’s game, the Devils will leave town for a two-game roadtrip as they battle the Toledo Walleye Tuesday at Huntington Center at 7:00 p.m. and the Wheeling Nailers at WesBanco Arena Wednesday at 7:05 p.m.#23 Taylor Vichorek dropped the gloves with #3 Benn Olson November 5, a Devils’ 5-4 OT win.

Saturday night marked the first time this season that all three teams in the Devils system earned victories the same night. The trifecta started in an afternoon contest at Prudential Center in Newark where Travis Zajac’s shootout winner and Johan Hedberg’s 40 saves propelled the New Jersey Devils to a 2-1 shootout win against the rival Philadelphia Flyers. A few hours later in Binghamton, the Albany Devils took down the Senators by a score of 4-3. The win halted a two-game losing streak and saw goaltender Dave Caruso pick up his first win in an Albany uniform by making 31 saves. Moments after Albany celebrated its win, the Trenton Devils capped a Devils’ sweep by knocking off the Alaska Aces, 5-2

Nine players have made their NHL debut this season with New Jersey, the most ever (eight in 1985-96 and 1991-92), and several former Trenton players have been a part of the organization-wide shuffle. Less than two months into the 2010-11 season, seven ‘10-11 Trenton Devils have made it to Albany, with Dan Charleston, Dave Caruso, Jeff Lerg, Trevor Kell, Kory Nagy, and Darcy Zajac currently in New York’s capital city, with Dave Leaderer playing five games with Albany earlier this season. Other Trenton graduates with Albany include Chris Murray, Myles Stoesz, Pierre-Luc Letorneau-Leblond, Brad Mills and Olivier Magnan, with the trio of Letorneau-Leblond, Mills and Magnan having suited up for both Albany and New Jersey this season.

Dave Caruso made his Albany Devils debut November 24 at Wilkes-Barre/Scranton in relief

of Jeff Frazee after being loaned to Albany from Trenton earlier this month. After the Penguins scored two goals on their first eight shots against the game’s starting goaltender Frazee, Caruso stepped between the pipes and turned aside 21 of 22 Wilkes-Barre/Scranton shots during the Devils 3-0 loss at Mohegan Sun Arena at Casey Plaza in Wilkes-Barre, Pennsylvania. Caruso’s previous AHL experience includes 32 games played for the Devils’ AHL affiliate in Lowell during the 2007-08 and 2008-09 seasons, and one game played for the Chicago Wolves in 2006-07. This season with Trenton, Caruso has posted a 0.909 save percentage in seven games played.

Former Trenton coach and player Rick Kowalsky is in his first year as Albany head coach, so far 9-11-0-0 through 20 games. Kowalsky coached Trenton each of the past four seasons, posting a 138-122 (.531 win pct.) record while leading the team to the playoffs on two occasions. As a player, Kowalski notched 69 points (30g, 39a) in 69 games while suiting up for Trenton during the 2000-01 and 2004-05 seasons. A Simcoe, ON native, Kowalski served as team captain during Trenton’s 2004-05 Kelly Cup Championship season.

Scoring nine goals and seven assists for 16 points during the 2006-07 season with Trenton, forward Brad Mills has seven points (4g, 3a) in 12 games this season for Albany after appearing in 150 games for the Devils’ AHL affiliate in Lowell over the past four seasons. In November, 2010, the Olds, AB native became the 447th ECHL player to graduate to the NHL, as Mills

played four games for New Jersey, scoring his first NHL goal to break a late third period tie at United Center in Chicago during the Devils 5-3 win over the defending Stanley Cup Champion Blackhawks November 3.
