TRENTON DEVILS (25-36-2-6, 58pts) vs ELMIRA JACKALS (32-27-7-3, 74pts) Game 70 ◦ Wednesday, March 30, 2011 ◦ 7:00 p.m. ◦ Sun National Bank Center, Trenton, NJ

Another shootout win for t-Devs

trenton, nJ – After surrendering a one-goal third-period lead, the Trenton Devils got shootout goals from Ryan Hayes and Jeff Prough to beat the Kalamazoo Wings, 3-2, Friday at Sun National Bank Center.

The Wings got a shootout goal from Andrew Fournier, but were denied the tying strike in the fifth round when Aaron Clarke was stopped by Jeff Lerg. Lerg also stopped 43 of Kalamazoo’s 45 shots in regulation and overtime to earn the win, while Dave Leaderer and Ryan Hayes were the Devils’ regulation-time goal scorers.

A week after he shut the Devils out at Wings Stadium, Riley Gill was

beaten on two of five shootout attempts, and two of 37 shots in regulation and overtime, while losing for the first time this season against Trenton. Mitch Versteeg and Darryl Lloyd scored in regulation time for Kalamazoo.

Versteeg gave the Wings a 1-0 lead just 4:33 into the first period when he shot over Lerg’s shoulder from the left-wing boards. However, the Devils tied the game just under seven minutes later, when Dave Leaderer scored a power-play goal, with assists going to Jordon Southorn and Ryan Ginand. With the assist, Ginand moved up to 75 points, four back of Scott Bertoli’s single-season franchise point record set in the 2006-07 season.

The score remained tied until Ryan Hayes made the score 2-1 Devils by scoring a power-play goal 48 seconds into the third period. Off a pass by Chris Berenguer, Hayes came in an executed a tricky-toe drag move from the left-wing circle and quickly snapped a shot that Gill never fully reacted to. The goal was Hayes’ 21st of the season, tied for second on the team with Jeff Prough, who was also credited with an assist, which was his third point in the last two games since returning from AHL-Albany and 36th point of the year.

But, the first-place Wings clawed back into the game and knotted the score, 2-2, when Darryl Lloyd scored out of a net-mouth scramble with 10:04 left in the third period.

Although they allowed the Wings to salvage a point as a consequence of Lloyd’s game-tying goal, the Devils got two shootout goals to win the game 3-2, including Hayes’ league-leading seventh shootout score.

The win improves the Devils to 25-36-2-6 with three games remaining in the 2010-11 season. The next of those will be next Wednesday night when the Elmira Jackals make their final visit to Sun National Bank Center at 7:00 p.m.

Ryan Hayes scored his 21st goal of the season Friday, plus his legue-leading seventh shootout goal.

During the 2010-11 season, Ryan Ginand has been the Trenton Devils’ most consistent and most lethal scoring weapon, and his next-level play earned him a promotion to AHL-Albany Saturday.

Selected as Trenton’s lone All-Star in January, Ginand has ranked in the league’s top 10 in scoring all season while pacing the Devils in nearly all offensive categories: goals (29), assists (46), points (75), power play points (23), points per game (1.1), game-winning goals (4), multi-point games (19), and shots (402). The second year pro out of Northeastern University has recorded points in 46 of the 68 games he’s played and ranks sixth in league scoring and fourth in assists.

His production has not been curtailed in his first two games competing in the American Hockey League. He scored a goal in his Albany debut Saturday in Hershey, followed by a three-point game (1g, 2a) Tuesday vs. Adirondack. While Ginand lends his services to Albany on a professional tryout contract, he’ll be out of the Trenton lineup Wednesday for the first time

since November 13 at Elmira, the only game he’s missed this season.

Ginand’s absence also hinders his pursuit of two records. His 75 points are the second most in franchise history for a single season. Scott Bertoli posted 79 points in 64 games during his final pro season in 2006-07. But with only three games remaining for Trenton and Ginand preoccupied with his AHL exploits, Bertoli’s record may be safe.

Meanwhile, Ginand’s shot total is the second highest mark in league history. With 10 shots on goal in two games last week, Giand became only the second player in ECHL history to surpass the 400-shot plateau. Idle at 402, Ginand is still 41 shots short of Daren Colbourne’s single-season shots record of 443.

Ginand and the Albany Devils have seven games remaining on their schedule, next traveling to Glen Falls, NY to face the Adirondack Phantoms Friday at 7:30 before returning home for games Saturday and Sunday vs. Charlotte and Binghamton.

TRENTON DEVILS (25-36-2-6, 58pts) vs ELMIRA JACKALS (32-27-7-3, 74pts) Game 70 ◦ Wednesday, March 30, 2011 ◦ 7:00 p.m. ◦ Sun National Bank Center, Trenton, NJ

The Devils conclude their 16-game season series with the Elmira Jackals tonight at Sun National Bank Center. Although the Jackals clinched the season series by winning for the ninth time in the head-to-head matchups last Wednesday (Trenton leads 28-22-0-4 all time), Trenton has the ability to play spoiler as Elmira enters the week with a slim four-point lead for an Eastern Conference playoff spot. A Jackals regulation or overtime win Wednesday would clinch them their fourth consecutive Kelly Cup playoff berth, a streak that coincides with their entry into the ECHL.

Trenton has been without Trevor Kell and Bryan Haczyk the last five games and Dan Charleston the last three. None of the three are expected in Trenton’s lineup tonight. Ryan Ginand is out of the Trenton lineup for only the second time this season after signing a pro tryout with AHL-Albany on Saturday.

The Jackals received four players from AHL-Binghamton today, R.J. Anderson, Jason Bailey, Corey Cowick and Mike Hoffman. Elmira is also without the league’s leading scorer Justin Donati who was placed on 3-day IR Tuesday.

Wednesday is the penultimate home game of Trenton’s season, as the Devils host Fan Appreciation Night Friday, when the Reading Royals visit SunCenter for a 7 p.m. game. Trenton rounds out the regular season at Reading Saturday at 7:05. Elmira plays at Toledo Friday and at Kalamazoo Saturday. The Devils take on the Jackals the 16th and final time this regular season.

sCoutinG the DeviLs* The Devils are in third place n the Atlantic Division, 11th place in the

Eastern Conference and have a record of 25-36-2-6. Although they’ve struggled for large portions of the 2010-11 season, the Devils have relished the spoiler role and played tough hockey down the stretch by going 4-4-0-2 in their last 10 games.

* With 205 goals in 69 games, the Devils average 2.97 scores per game, which is the 14th best rate in the ECHL. Trenton’s offense took a serious hit, too, when its leading scorer, Ryan Ginand, was signed to a Professional Tryout Contract by the Albany Devils last Saturday. However, Trenton did receive its leading scorer from last season, Jeff Prough, from Albany for the last two games. Prough has contributed a goal and two assists in the last two games to give him 21 goals and 15 assists in 45 games with Trenton in 2010-11.

* Trenton is 17th in team defense with 245 goals-against in 69 games (3.55 per game). The owner of Trenton’s last four wins in goal has been Jeff Lerg. Lerg enters the season’s final three games with an 11-12-1 record and a couple wins in the next few games would clinch him his first winning record in pro hockey. Dave Caruso has played one game for Trenton since returning from AHL-Albany and has a strong .914 save percentage in four games against the Jackals this season.

* At even strength, the Devils are minus-26 with 141 goals-for and 167 goals-against.

* The Devils’ power play has come to life and scored three times in eight chances over the last two games. The improved play knocks Trenton’s PP up to 16.8%, which is 14th in the league. On the other side of the special-teams equation, Trenton’s penalty kill has allowed 63 goals in 307 times shorthanded (79.5%), which is 16th in the ECHL.

* With Ryan Ginand, Dan Charleston and Matt Vokes out of the lineup tonight, Trenton’s leading scorer vs. Elmira is Dave Leaderer with 10 points.

sCoutinG the JACKALs* The Jackals are in second place in the ECHL’s Atlantic Division,

seventh place in the Eastern Conference, and with a record of 32-27-7-3, they have a chance to clinch their fourth consecutive playoff berth tonight. A difference maker for the Jackals this season has been their fine play against the Devils, from whom they’ve taken 19 of a possible 30 points. While a win would clinch a playoff spot for Elmira, a loss would give ninth-place Toledo a chance to move to within two points tomorrow night with its game in hand.

* Elmira has scored 242 goals in 69 games (3rd/3.51 per game) which put them four back of Reading for the league’s top offense. The Jackals’ leading scorer is Justin Donati, who’s in good position to win the ECHL’s scoring title, despite missing the last four games. A scoring-title win for Donati would clinch consecutive ECHL scoring titles for the Donati twins (Tyler had 114 points last season), which would mark the first time in professional hockey history that twin brothers would lead the same league in scoring in consecutive seasons. Ironically, Daniel Sedin of the NHL’s Vancouver Canucks looks to be in solid position to win the NHL’s scoring title, which would complete the same feat for him and his twin brother, Henrik.

* Defensively, the Jackals’ 249 goals-against in 69 games (18th/ 3.61 per game) are the most allowed in the Eastern Conference and just eight clear of the league’s lowest ranked defensive team, the Ontario Reign. Although the Jackals have struggled to keep the puck out of their net and have used 10 different goalies this season, Marco Cousineau has solidified Elmira in goal as of late. Although Cousineau has lost three of his last four starts, he’s posted an overall record of 21-15-5, while going 7-3-0 against the Devils.

* At even strength, the Jackals are plus-nine, with 165 goals-for and 156 goals-against.

trenton, nJ - The Trenton Devils today signed forward Matt Arhontas. The announcement was made by Albany and Trenton General Manager Chris Lamoriello.

Arhontas, 24, recently concluded his college career at Princeton University (ECAC) and a two-game stint with the Reading Royals, making his pro debut at Trenton March 9. In four seasons with Princeton, the Naperville, IL native compiled 28 goals and 37 assists with a plus-15 in 127 career games, posting a career-high 19 points his senior year. Arhontas played three seasons of junior hockey with the USHL’s Waterloo Black Hawks from 2004 to 2007, serving as captain his third year and scoring a career-best 18 goals and 45 points. The 5-7, 160-lb. right-handed shooter was born March 10, 1987. He will be in the Trenton lineup tonight and will wear jersey number 25.
