headthroughthemarkettownofOkehamptonandpasswildsceneryalongthewesternedgeofDartmoor.

ThroughTavistockwellgraduallydescendtomeettheoffroadPlymValleyTrailtoarriveatPlymouthsspectacularwaterfront.

ThisisamoderatelyhardrouteandrangesfromveryeasyformerrailwaystracksoftheTarkaandPlym

ValleyTrailstosomechallenginggradient,especiallyalongthewesternedgeofDartmoor.Withhighlights

suchastheMeldonViaduct,speciallyconvertedforcycleuse,theDevonCoasttoCoastisanunforgettable

twowheeledjourneythroughastunninglybeautifulcounty.

WHATTOEXPECT

TracksurfaceTherouteisamixtureofeasytraffic-freetrails,suchasTarkaTrail(nowalmostentirely

tarmac),quiteminorroadsandbridlewaytracks.Theveryoccasionalmoredifficultbridlewaytracksareare

usuallylocatedonanalternativerouteoption,meaningthesesectionsarentcompulsory.Thereeasiest

sectionissaveduntillast,withaneffortlessdownhillglidetoPlymouthalongthePlymValley.

WaymarkingTheDevonCoasttoCoastisitselfNationalRoute27.YoumayalsoseeSustransNationroute

3TheWestCountryWay.

MAINBIKETRAILSUSED

IlfracombetoWillingcottRelativelyshortat3mileslong,butyoullbeextremelygratefulfor,asithelps

youavoidthesteepgradientsoutofIlfracombe.

TheTarkaTrail30milesonanexcellenttrafficfreepathwitheasypedaling.Therouteusessectionsfrom

BrauntontonearPetrockstowe.

GraniteWayTrafficfreefor10.5milesfromOkehamptontoLydford.

ThePlymValleyTrail9miles,mainlyalongadisusedrailwaybed.FromGoodameavynearClearbrookto

LairaBridgeinPlymouth,passingthroughSaltramandalongsidethePlymestuary.

PREPARATION

TheDevonC2Cisamoderatelyhardroutesoitisimportanttoensureyouhaveyourtrainingpreparationcovered.Althoughtherouterarelymanagestoclimbtomorethan250m(820ft)therollinghillsofDevon

meanyoushouldbepreparedfornumeroussmallerclimbs.Basicfitnessandatleastsomecycling

experienceisadvised.ThetoughsectionisprobablytheoffroadoptionbeforeandafterTavistock,along

thewesternedgeofDartmoorthenacrosstheWalkhamValleyviaGrenofenBridge.Theflatsurfaceofthe

TarkaandPlymValleyTrailsisleisurecyclingatitseasiest.

ToughgradientsoutofIlfracombewillgiveyouspectacularviewsoverthiswonderfullyvariedcoastline.

TheresamarkedchangeatBrauntonwhereyoujointheeasyTarkaTrailalongsidetheserenetidalscenery

oftheTawandTorridgeestuariestopassthroughthecharmsofBarnstapleandBideford,almostentirely

onrailpath.

BidefordTavistock

EasyprogresscontinuesontheTarkaTrailfromBideforduntiljustbeforePetrockstowe.TheTarkaTrail

staysbytheRiverTorridgeuntiljustbeforeGreatTorrington,whichcanbevisitedalongaspuroffthe

route.Moreundulatingminorroadspredominateafterthis,totakeyouthroughHatherleighto

Okehampton.Gradually,rollinggreencountrysidesupersedesthebeautifulTorridgeValley.Afteraneasy

ridedownthetrafficfreeGraniteWaythereissometoughclimbingrewardedbybeautifulviews;the

crossingoftheMeldonViaductandtheviewsaroundNorthBrentoraretrulymemorable.Afterashortbut

fairlyroughoffroadsectionleadingtoPeterTavytheroutesplits.Anewlinkwithspeciallyconstructed

trafficfreesectionsmeansyoucannowgotoTavistockcentreviaHarfordBridge,pickingupsectionsof

theoldrailwaylineintoTavistock.

Day3

TavistockPlymouth

AfterTavistocktheoffroadoptionswitchestothewestandfeaturesaverysevereuphillpushafter

GrenofenBridge.TocontinueontheonroadoptionwewillmakeourwayfromTavistockcentreonminorroadsoverWhitchurchDown,thoughthisrouteisnotsigned.AtWarrensCrosswewilljointheeastern

routeoption.Heretheeasydescentalongthewellsurfaces,offroadPlymValleytrailbeginsanda

spectacularfinishatPlymouthswaterfrontawaits!
