Past National President, Sally Jane Krantz, passed away on September 23,

2019. Born December 28, 1950, she was the loving daughter of the late

Robert and Evelyn Krantz. Sally was a graduate of St. Mary’s Seminary, Villa

Maria college and Buena Vista College in Iowa. Her BA was in public school

music education, and her Associate’s Degree was in recreational gerontol-

ogy. She volunteered at the Buffalo City Mission and loved animals and

classical music. Sally Krantz served our organization as National President

for the term of 2002-2003, and presided over the National Convention

held in Fort Mitchell, KY.

Sister Sally was truly the product of a Grand Army Family, being the cousin

of 1942 National President Gladys W. Newton, the Granddaughter and

Daughter of 2 NY Past Department Presidents, including Evelyn P. Krantz

who also served as the National Registrar for a number of years. Sally was

initiated at the National Convention August, 1975 in Rochester, NY and

including the lack of the Bugle Call, our main tool of communication. To fill

this void she sent out several General Orders to the National Officers, and

Department President’s which served to keep the organization on track .

She was aware of our needs to modernize and find a new focus in order to

gain new, younger members, and regrow our beloved organization. If me-

morials are desired, they may be made to the LGAR Memorial Fund in Sal-

Veterans of the Civil War (1861-1865), and Ladies of the

Grand Army of The Republic 2007. In Jan of 2018 I moved

to West Des Moines to be in a facility where if I fell or

some knew when I got hurt someone would find me in

several hours, not several days. I had fallen several times

in Ohio, and I have two knee replacements. In October

2018 I had visited my cousin and aunt who lived in a com-

munity that has independent living, assisted living, and

even a nursing area. They had us have a physical and that

is when they found out I had a heart condition. So before

I moved out here the Doctors put in a pace maker, and I

am doing very well. My hobbies are: genealogy, quilting, and reading.

The ancestor I joined the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic through, was Pvt. Amos Crane He was age 29 when he enlisted on October 3, 1862 at Ballville Twp. (near present day Fremont Ohio), Sandusky County, Ohio. Amos was in the 72nd OVI Co F for three years and was a private when he died of disease on April 25, 1865 in A Field Hospital near Sand Ridge, Alabama. He had two brothers who served on the Union Side in the Civil War--Ira, and Joel. Ira was captured and sent to Andersonville, and released April 27, 1865, and died on board the Steamer " Sultana" which blew up near Memphis Ten-nessee, on the Mississippi River going home. Amos fought in the Battles of Shiloh, Corinth, Central Mississippi Railroad, the Battle of Vicksburg, and the Siege of Jack-sonville He was at one time, under Ulysses Grant . He was connected with the Army Corp of Engineers, Battle of the Cumberland. I come from a long line of Veterans who fought to keep us safe and free, From the Revolu-tionary War, War of 1812, Spanish/ American War, and both of my grandfather’s fought in World War 1, and my father in World War 11-( the War to end all wars). Since my paternal grandparents had two daughters, and my father, there were no more sons on his side. My maternal grandparents had five daughters; there were no more sons on her side. Since I am the last living direct descend-ent on both sides of my family, I feel it is very important to finish and make sure my family tree is complete for both the Hamlin, and Baron sides of the family. In the Ladies of the Grand Army of the Republic I have held offices in the Margaret M. Orr Circle #105, and the De-partment of Ohio as, Chaplain, Patriotic Instructor, and President. I have also held the National offices of Chaplain (2016), Patriotic Instructor (2017), Junior Vice President (2018), finished the 2018-2019 Presidential term, and was elected National president (2019-2020).

2019 NATIONAL CONVENTION HELD AT LITCHFIELD, MN GRAND ARMY OF THE REPUBLIC HALL

Members of the LGAR were treated to a wonderful experience as the ladies of the

Department of Minnesota hosted this years National Convention.

The meeting was held in an original GAR Hall in Leitchfield Minnesota. This was

a unique event in our modern history.

Our hostesses were well prepared for those who chose to make the trip.

The morning of our meeting we were treated to a beautiful continental breakfast of homemade goodies.

Coffee, tea and cold water were available

throughout the day. We were given certificates

for lunch at the local VFW hall were we had our

choice of many meals. ( Also a restaurant). Our

Dinner was catered and served at the Opera

House.

The Council was so impressed and the Minnesota

Ladies were anxious to host us again next year

and promised an even better experience!

I’m not sure that’s possible as this year was won-

derful!

What’s New at HQ

Your Headquarters Committee is almost finished with Part One of the Archive Scanning Project. We expect this

Part One to be done by November 1st! Part 2 of the project we believe will take one more year. However, there

are many opportunities available for any member to help with Part 3...and that requires you to simply have a

computer and change file names to the members name. The goal is to have this process completed by July 2020.

Please email your request to have an external drive shipped to you this Fall to begin working on this project. If

you have already completed your files, please mail back the external drive (if you have not done so already) and

more states will be put on your drive and mailed back to you to complete. Your HQ Committee really wants to

thank those that have offered to help with this project.

Your time and willingness is gratefully appreciated.

For an external drive to help working on this project contact:

Kathy Twigg at 407-312-2909 or Beth Rock [email protected]

Approved for any and all membership to use the LGAR heading on letterhead, websites, or social media, with this heading to

be used only for the good of the Order.

Under Chapter 4, Article 2 of our National Bylaws, Section 1, change that first sentence to read “The National Convention as a

whole shall consist of the following members…” Under Section D, at the end, put C Chapter 3, Article 5, Section 4-7 under

Department Conventions. This reiterates the process by which a Department elects delegates to the National Convention. In

Article 2, Section 2, the opening sentence “the above named “current” national elected officers, together with the secretary,

and Past National Presidents shall constitute the national Advisory Council.” Eliminating Section 4.

PA Circle #232 Recognizes Marlton Middle School for Patriotism submitted by Jackie Carter, Historian During their 2019 meeting, PA Circle #232 recognized Marlton Middle School’s Renaissance Club and Ms. Wible’s 8th

Grade Students for the patriotism and leadership they demonstrated through their support of military families sta-

tioned at Kadena Air Base in Okinawa, Japan. Member, Mary Wible, introduced the project to her students at the

beginning of the 2018-2019 school year, encouraging them to show gratitude to military families for their sacrifices

by sending manufacturers coupons. Students donated their time collecting and clipping more than $150,000 worth

of manufacturers coupons which were donated to families stationed at the base. Students developed an enormous

sense of pride in their contributions by giving back to our military. Their support of these families has helped stretch

budgets by saving money on items purchased at the military commissary. In addition to supporting the military base,

students demonstrated their patriotism by contributing to Ms. Wible’s military board honoring Veterans from the

Revolutionary War through the present. A thank you card, and Certificate of Recognition was presented by Circle

President, Jessy Schaffer and PA Department President, Darlene Alcorn. Marlton Middle School Teacher, Mary Wible

accepted the award on behalf of her students.
