4.0 How does it Work?

• Devrinol-C works by being absorbed through the roots by acropetal translocation, then by inhibiting cell division (inhibition of VLCFA’s).

• Devrinol-C prevents root development of susceptible weed species.

• Devrinol-C will not control germinated weeds or weeds that have germinated below the herbicide layer. A knockdown herbicide needs to be used to control germinated weeds.

• Devrinol-C is classified by the Herbicide Resistance Action Committee (HRAC) as belonging to Mode of Action Group K (inhibitors of very Long chain fatty acids, VLCFAs).

• Within Group K, there are different chemical families:

– Devrinol-C (Napropamide) belongs to the chemical family, Acetamide.

– Metazachlor belongs to the chemical family, Chloracetamide.

– Pyroxasulfone belongs to the chemical family, Isoxazoline.

5.0 resistance Management

Devrinol-C (napropamide) was tested against a susceptible population SLR4 and a highly resistant ryegrass population EP 162 from the lower Eyre peninsula, South Australia.

• It is only susceptible to paraquat and atrazine.

•Devrinol-C: LD50s are 67 g/ha for SLR 4 and 452 g/ha for EP 162. – Resistance Index = 6.7

*RI = LD50 of R population divided by LD50 of S populations

Solubility – Higher the number the more water soluble it is and will move readily with water through the soil profile.

Koc measures the mobility of a substance in soil. A very high value means it is strongly adsorbed onto soil and organic matter and does not move throughout the soil. A very low value means it is highly mobile in soil.

8.0 How and When to apply devrinol-C?

• Timing from application to Incorporation.

– Devrinol-C is broken down predominately by sunlight.

– deVrinol-C should be applied and incorporated into the soil within 2 hours of application and not more than 4 hours after application or post-drilling, pre-emergence of the crop.

– Mechanically incorporate into the top 25 mm of soil, avoid excessive soil throw into adjoining seeding row.

– Trials show Devrinol-C can fit into common Incorporated By Sowing (IBS) application methods

Including Knife point and press wheels

The best results are obtained when Devrinol is applied to moist soil.

9.0 Using devrinol-C in the Spray Tank

9.1 Products found to be compatible with Devrinol-C in Australian Canola trials/ demonstrations.

• Pack Size: 20Kg Bag (in a box).

• If product has settled during transport, invert bag a couple of times to eliminate clumping.

• When mixing Devrinol-C 500 WG make a slurry and add to a nearly filled spray tank with adequate agitation. This will enhance initial mixing.

• Or add the required amount of Devrinol-C to the spray tank at least half-full with water under agitation. Top up with water to the required volume and agitate well to ensure even mixing before application.

• Maintain constant agitation throughout the spray operation.

• In all trials including large scale product demonstrations Devrinol-C has been easy to mix and disperse in the spray tank.

Devrinol-C will not control germinated weeds, so tank mix knockdown herbicides.

Tank mix other residual herbicides, if required, to broaden weed control spectrum.

Always read the labels of both products before use

10.0 devrinol-C use in a Canola -Wheat– Pasture or legume Crop rotations

• Canola: DO NOT graze or cut for stock food for 12 weeks after application.

• Devrinol-C is particularly susceptible to photodegradation and rate of breakdown in the soil is greatly accelerated at high temperatures.

• At the recommended application rates, it is unlikely that herbicide residues will persist to harm following crops, provided label instructions are followed.

• DO NOT sow pasture, winter and summer cereals, onions or beet for 12 months after treatment.

• Trials across different soil types and rainfall have shown it to be safe to following grass and cereal crops after 12 months under minimum till programs even at 2x the highest rate.

• Grasses are particularly sensitive to Devrinol-C– Plant back trials showing cereals planted 30 days after application

versus 360 days.
