    INTRODUCTION

    Language has an important function in human life, it is used to connect each other. Based on

    reality, English is used by all of the people around the world, so it is important for us to

    mastering it that we are able to develop our relationship with people from other countries.

    Westrup and Baker, (2000:3) state that the students have different reasons for studying English,such as : (a)English is required subject, (b)in order to be succesfull in national national or

    university exam, (c)for pleasure or personal interest and (d)English can lead the students to get a

    better job.

    In relation to this study, vocabulary is one linguistic feature influences the communicative

    competence. Vocabulary includes collection of words are known not only as individual words,

    but also as a group of words that have meaning. The mastery of vocabulary will directly imply

    the mastery of four language skills.

    In fact, the subject under study face some peoblem in the subject vocabulary. Succesfull teachingvocabulary is considered to be the foremost element that can reflect the quality of EFL learners.

    Brown (2008:22) said that motivation is the key of being successful in learning. Motivation is

    considered as drive, impulse, emotion or desire that moves one to certain action. One of the ways

    to motivate students to improve their vocabulary is through Random Guessing Game technique.

    Random Gussing Game is an essential tool that used to measure the students understanding

    about the picture or the word that related to the topic. In this case the researcher choose the title

    of study : Teaching Vocabulary Through Random Guessing Game to the Seventh Grade

    Students of SMPN 4 Abiansemal, because knowing students weakness on studying vocabulary.

    There were so many teaching technique have been practiced in teaching and learning process,like one is used in this called Random Guessing Game. Based on these fact, the undertaking of

    the presents study intends to teach vocabulary to the students through Random Guessing Game

    of the seventh grade students of SMPN 4 Abiansemal. Through applies of this teaching

    technique the researcher will be able to know its effectiveness.

    This study is limited only to the seventh grade students of SMPN 4 Abiansemal. The study

    focuses on teaching vocabulary through Random Guessing Game strategy. The seveneth grade of

    SMPN 4 Abiansemal is consisted of eight classes, but the researcher just use one class as a

    subject research of this study. The class VII B as a subject research consisted of 36 students. The

    vocabularies taught are limited to the use of nouns and verbs vocabulary related to the closesenvironment in daily activities.

    The results of this study aims at providing both theoretical and practical contributions as the

    following :

    a. Theoretically, the use of game wasas a great way to teach and improve the students

    mastery in vocabulary.

    b. Practically, it would give them a description about how to teach and to motivate the

    students to learn about English especially in vocabulary learning. The use of game

    could be a good alternative in teaching vocabulary, where it would make the students

    enjoy following the lesson.

    The students difference in learning and mastering vocabulary is not cause by the teacher, sincethe teacher are assumed to have similar teaching qualification in English, but it is because the

    student ability is different to one and another. While the students are assumed to have the same

    learning motivations and language environment, that in this case both the teachers and the

    students should be active in teaching learning process.

    The hypothesis of this present study can be stated as the following :

    Vocabulary Mastery of the Seventh Grade Students of SMPN 4 Abiansemal Can be Improved

    by Using Random Guessing Game.

    There are three key terms, which need to be opperationally defined in order to avoid

    misunderstanding and misinterpretation on the part of the readers, they are provided as follows :

    1. Vocabulary

    The American Heritage Dictionary defines vocabulary as the sum of word used by,

    understood by, or at the command of a particular person or group. In addition,

    vocabulary is one of the language components. As the language component, vocabulary

    must be taught in a proper way.

    2. Random Guessing Game

    It refers to a game being implemented to improve the students vocabulary. It is based on

    tranformational and usage in speaking or to improve the students ability especially in

    vocabulary (Agoestyowati, Redjeki, 2010: 59)

    3. SMPN 4 Abiansemal

    It refers to a Junior High School that is determined by researcher to conduct theresearcher, which is located on Br. Pengembungan Bongkasa Abiansemal district in

    Badung Regency Bali Province where the opresent study was carried out.
