BE THE BEST YOU CAN BE… BE A DEWITT V.I.P.

December 2010

Principal’s Message Mrs. Schoonover

RACE TO A MILLION!! Have

you noticed all the cars at DeWitt?

They are part of our Million Minute

Reading Challenge. Our goal is to

collectively read one million minutes

by the end of the school year. The

race car sheets are used to record

reading minutes. When the sheet is

full and

returned to

school, the

student will

be able to

color one of

the states on

the map. All

those who turned in a completed car

sheet will be entered in a monthly

prize drawing. Those who have

returned 5 car sheets (500 minutes)

will receive a charm. Remember the

goal is to read. That is; reading alone,

with a family member or friend, Raz-

Kids, Poetry Notebooks, cereal boxes,

directions, recipes, books on

CD/Tape, etc… ANYTHING WITH

WORDS!

Reading Strategies for Parents of

Young Readers

Invite your child to read with

you every day.

When reading a book where the

print is large, point word by

word as you read. This will

help your child learn that

reading goes from left to right

and understand that the word

said is the word seen.

Read a child’s favorite book

over and over again.

Read many stories with

rhyming words and lines that

repeat. Invite your child to join

in on these parts.

Discuss new words.

Stop and ask about the pictures

and about what is happening in

the story.

Read from a variety of books.

Each month student reporter, Cleo Bebber, will interview a DeWitt staff member and

DeWitt’s Top Tigers.

Hi, it’s Cleo here and I just got done interviewing Katie

McDaniel, this month’s Top TigerKatie is in Mrs. Suboticki’s 4th

grade class. Her birthday is on June 2nd

. That’s just two days

before school is out! Katie also says that she likes video games. I

can’t blame her. I mean, who doesn’t like pixilated

entertainment? Katie told me it is her wish is to be a scientist

when she grows up. I think that would be fun and interesting! She

obviously has good taste. Well, that’s it for now. This is Cleo

Bebber saying great job Katie McDaniel!

Hi, I’m back with another Top Tiger interview. I just got the scoop on

Kirk Albrecht. Kirk is in Mrs. Suboticki’s 4th

grade class. I found out

that Kirk’s favorite restaurant is the Longhorn Steakhouse. Well, thank

you Kirk, you just made me hungry…anyway, Kirk’s favorite subjects

are science and social studies. Wow, that’s awesome! The last thing I

got from Kirk was that he loves snowball fights!

Hmmm…interesting…this leads me to ask one question. “Does Kirk

like building snowmen?” The world may never know. Congratulations

to Kirk Albrecht. Keep up the good work!

It’s Cleo here and I just got done interviewing Mrs.

Pinkerton, this month’s Top Teacher. Mrs.

Pinkerton’s favorite number is five, which is an

awesome number and is also the grade that she

teaches. Her favorite sports team is the Tallmadge

Blue Devils. Hmm…I wonder what their mascot is???

Well, now my curiosity has been piqued. Anywho,

Mrs. Pinkerton’s favorite artist is Claude Monet who I

hear paints many, many, many lily pads. If I’m

correct, Mrs. Pinkerton’s favorite butterfly is either the Monarch or the Viceroy, which I

think means she likes orange butterflies with black stripes. For the final question, I asked

Mrs. Pinkerton why she thinks she became Top Teacher. She says that she thinks it’s

because she treats everybody fairly. Which I think is true!

Well, that’s it folks. See ya, next time!

Do your best, attract the press!

Congratulations to DeWitt secretary,

Mrs. Glendon, and to Kindergarten

teacher, Mrs. Burris, on being

selected as DeWitt PTA’s “Helping

Hand” and “Educator of the Year”.

We asked them a few questions

about themselves and here is what

we learned. Mrs. Glendon has

worked at DeWitt for 2 years, while

Mrs. Burris has taught at DeWitt for 42 years (yes 42!) ever since DeWitt

opened its doors. Mrs. Glendon’s hometown is far away in beautiful Honolulu,

Hawaii and Mrs. Burris’ hometown is right here in Cuyahoga Falls. Mrs.

Glendon has been married to her husband for 30 years and has 2 sons in

college. Mrs. Glendon has done a lot of traveling because both her father and

her husband were in the military. Mrs. Burris is married to her husband, Bob,

and has a son, Sean and his wife, Trisha. She has 5 step-children, Anne, David,

Mary, Pete, Leslie and 4 grandchildren. Mrs. Glendon’s favorite time of the

year is the first snowfall of winter when eveything is clean, cold and white.

Mrs. Burris’ favorite time of the year is spring. Mrs. Glendon’s favorite thing

about DeWitt School is the staff, parents, and students because they have all

been very kind and supportive of her as the “new” secretary. Mrs. Burris’

favorite thing about DeWitt School is all of the people she sees and works

with every day, both little and big!

And finally, a little advice for DeWitt students from our two honorees:

Mrs. Glendon: If you can’t do something the first time, keep trying!

Mrs. Burris: Do your best every day and treat others as you would like to be

treated.

Thanks, Mrs. Glendon and Mrs. Burris, we will sure try!

2nd Annual Holiday

Adopt-A-Family

Once again we are going to be collecting donations for some DeWitt families. This year we are going to do things a little different. In the past we have asked for toys, clothes, household items, etc… this year we are asking that you donate gift cards or cash (which will be used to buy gift cards). Depending on the amount of gift cards will determine the amount of families we will be able to help. To also help collect money we are going to be having a couple fundraisers: November 30th – December 3 Cut-out sales $0.25 each We will be selling cut-outs during all the lunch periods. These cut-outs will be used to block off Mrs. Glendon’s office windows. December 7th & 8th Winter Choral Bake Sale

If you have any questions please contact Jennifer Klein 330.923.7946 [email protected]
