Those who like to dress fashionably know that there is a pair of White County businessmen to whom they can

turn in making purchases: The Hays brothers, Terry and Monte, who have served customers for 29 years.

“From newborn to 5X men’s — big and

tall, we do it all,” Terry said of the wide range of clothing products in the brothers’ two stores.

Terry and his wife, Pam, and their son Tyler and his wife, Emily, along with and Monte and his wife, Tammy, make up the Hays fam-ily now involved in the family business with two locations: 3005 E. Race in Searcy and 1140 Highway 367 North in Judsonia.

the historyOn Aug. 13, 1982, the Hays brothers opened

their first store in Judsonia.“God just opened the door,” Terry said. “Our

dad had a full-service station at Judsonia for 33 years and we wanted to be in business for our-selves, so we started praying.”

Their father, Dayton Hays, died in 2006.

That first store, 3,000 square feet, sold cloth-ing. By 1986 the brothers had bought adjoin-ing buildings and began selling furniture and appliances, bringing their floor space to 25,000. In 2004 they began a second location at 2310 E. Race in Searcy, which moved to its present location at 3005 E. Race, a 30,000-square-foot

In a huge and varied sales environment like Hays Family Clothing in Searcy, a good sales representative needs to know his customer base.

Because of his dedication to both shoppers and sales, Ray Wallis has been named “Best Retail Salesperson” in The Daily Citizen’s annual “Best of the Best” contest.

Wallis has been a member of the Hays

team for almost two years, but his sales expe-rience dates back almost half a century.

"I love to sell," he said. "You've got to like it to do it. It's all about meeting the people and taking care of your customer."

Wallis described Hays as a positive dynam-ic.

"It's like a family," he said. "The people that own it and the people that I work with are just like a big family."

Hays was founded in Judsonia in 1982 by brothers Monte and Terry Hays. The store expanded to include everything from cowboy boots to jewelry to hunting equipment to fur-niture, and in 2004 expanded to include a sec-

ond location in Searcy, where Wallis works. Wallis was born in Evening Shade and

attended school in Batesville. He has always worked in clothing sales, and previously has 40 years of experience with Van Atkins, a shop that once was a staple in downtown Searcy.

"I've been blessed with some great people to work with and to work for," he said. "Most of all it's the relationship I've had with my customers. They have come back for years, they trade with me, they trust me."

He said he's seen the attitude of sales change over the years.

"I think it's faster paced now," he said.

"Everybody's in kind of a hurry. When I first started people were more laid back."

While working at Hays, Wallis said he's seen customers visit from cities all around, including Little Rock, Batesville, Cabot and Jonesboro.

Wallis said he was honored by his selection for Best of the Best.

"Any time you're recognized it makes you feel good," he said.

In 2009, the Searcy Hays moved to its present location at 3005 East Race, where it also recently opened Hays Kids. The original shop is still located at 1140 Highway 367 North in Judsonia.

the location was just not available,” Monte said.

When the Searcy store moved to its pres-ent location the brothers began Hays Kids, with a full line of clothing and baby furni-ture including car seats and strollers. Their biggest hit in Hays Kids has been their baby registeries for showers, Terry said.

Together with their Judsonia store both locations have a combined area of 55,000 square feet — 18 times larger than their first store.

their philosophyFrom the Christian music playing over-

head to the attitude of the Hays brothers, it is apparent the stores are based on a godly philosophy.

“This is a Christian-based business,” Terry said. “It’s His and we’re just stewards over it.”

The brothers’ philosophy, in a nutshell.1. Put God first.2. Love people. Treat people like you

want to be treated.“We have four generations of people that

have traded with us because we live God’s standard,” Terry said. “We’re going to be honest and truthful. If you treat people right you’re going to be the best of the best.”

3. Work hard. “You gotta work. That’s what our daddy

taught us,” Terry said. “A lot of people don’t want to work.”

The brothers work six days a week, put-ting in long hours, telling of days early in the business’ beginning when they would drive to Atlanta to buy a van load of cloth-ing, return to Judsonia, price the items then go home for a few hours sleep before returning to open the store for business the next day.

“Business is hard,” Terry said.

“Partnerships are hard. With us being broth-ers — he’s the best buyer in retail that there is. I can sell, and we blend real good together.”

Having good hired help is crucial too, according to Terry.

“We couldn’t do anything without great managers,” Terry said.

FashionFocusing on bringing new items to White

County is a key part of the brothers’ retail philosophy.

“We stay on top of the fashions,” Terry said. “You’ve got to be a leader in the busi-ness, be the first to have the hottest new thing. You will be able to find stuff at Hays you can’t find elsewhere.”

Monte travels to Dallas, Las Vegas, New York, Los Angeles and elsewhere to dig through hundreds of items offered by retail-ers just to find the few things he knows his

customers back in Arkansas want. “I go wherever we think it can be found,”

Monte said. “We search all over the coun-try to find what will work for this market. A lot of time we spend looking for the resources.”

How does Monte know what to bring back to White County?

“It just hits,” Monte said. “You just know it.”

The stores’ biggest seller pleases the brothers immensely: Their Hays T-shirts, which they’ve spotted, along with Hays caps, all over the country.

the futureJust in time for the family businesses’

30th anniversary next year, Tyler and Emily are expecting a son, bringing the fourth gen-eration into retailing in White County.

“You never know with the Hays brothers what we’ve got planned,” Terry said.
