The Festival Steering Group have brought

together our fullest and most diverse

programme to date, with something for everyone

to enjoy and take part in. The 6th Annual D.H.

Lawrence Festival promises to be the biggest and best

tribute to the writer D.H. Lawrence and the stunning mining

countryside that inspired his works:

• Uncover hidden creative talents by attending sketching, photography and

short story workshops;

• Discover more about D.H. Lawrence’s fascinating life and works through

reading groups, talks and lectures;

• Explore the beautiful countryside that inspired Lawrence’s works on

guided walks and bus tours;

• Delve into the wonderful heritage of 'D.H. Lawrence Country' through

photographic exhibitions and events taking place as part of the National

Heritage Open Days;

• Be stimulated by theatre performances, film screenings, writing and

music;

• Enjoy family fun with Bert’s Dust Busters, songs and storytelling, and our

Harry Potter Fun day;

• Celebrate Eastwood’s vibrant cultural heritage, and the centenary of

Lawrence’s ‘Colliery Plays’ at a Gala Evening at Eastwood Comprehensive,

which will showcase a new generation of Eastwood writers and performers

alongside readings and presentations of Lawrence’s own work.

This celebration has been developed by Broxtowe Borough Council, who

today aim to promote the history and works of this writer under the umbrella

of D.H. Lawrence Heritage.

JohnLongdon; the Vice-Chancellor of theUniversity of Nottingham, Professor DavidGreenaway and special guest John Holmespresenter for B.B.C. Radio Nottingham and East Midlands Today.Pupils from Eastwood Comprehensive will perform readings fromtheir award-winning anthology of new writing, and from D. H.Lawrence. This exhibition, by local historian and miner AnthonyKirby, brings together historic photographs of

Lawrence’s hometown of Eastwood, datingfrom the late 19th and early 20th Century.

on experience of ‘housekeeping’ with the guidance of ourHeritage Assistants. Find out about objects in the museumcollection and who used them; and how we look after andclean them today. Outdoor Concert at Colliers Wood featuring the Pye Hill Male Voice ChoirSaturday 29th August

Colliers Wood is the former site of Moorgreen Collieryand in Lawrence’s novel Sons and Lovers he

renamed the site ‘Minton Pit’. This free outdoorconcert includes a performance by the Pye HillMale Voice Choir who are reputed to be one ofthe oldest established male voice choirs in theEast Midlands: and possibly in the country.Bring along a picnic and blanket and enjoy thisstunning maturing woodland. The event is

Outdoor Sketching and Painting WorkshopsSunday 30th and (Bank Holiday) Monday 31st August As well as a playwright and novelist, D.H. Lawrence also enjoyedpainting. To follow Lawrence’s artistic pursuits visitors are invited tojoin local artist Maureen Lowe and sketch or paint in the grounds of

Durban House. Maureen will be in attendance tohelp with basic materials for those wishing

to try for the first time. All ages andabilities welcome with smaller drawing

and painting projects available forchildren. Spend as much time as youwish, a morning, an afternoon, allday, both days or just a couple ofhours a warm welcome will bewaiting!

Beauvale Priory Community PerformanceBroxtowe Borough Council’s Arts and Events team are thrilled toannounce that they have been successful in gaining a grant from theArts Council to produce a site-specific theatre event with a cast ofnon professional actors at Beauvale Priory, based on the turbulenthistory of the site. The team will be working with Hanby and Barrett –a participatory arts company who have already had great successes inthe borough with outdoor productions such as ‘The Girl in the Woods’(2007), ‘Blood Tub Rosie’ (2003) and ‘The Stone’ (2001).Development work will take place throughout August and Septemberwith performances over 3 days during mid October. Sons and Lovers Memory CatcherThursday 3rd and Friday 4th September400 local people were used as extras in the 1960 film adaptation ofD.H. Lawrence's breakthrough novel, Sons and Lovers, which waspartly filmed in Eastwood and Brinsley. The film directed by JackCardiff (who sadly passed away this year) starred Dean Stockwell asPaul Morel, Trevor Howard as his overbearing father and Wendy Hiller,

as the repressed wife Gertrude. Were you an extra inthe film? If so, Angela Smith from the Brinsley

Village Volunteers is keen to gather yourmemories of this once in a lifetime

Mountain Cottage Bus Tour and TalkSunday 6th SeptemberMountain Cottage was the home of D.H.Lawrence and his wife Frieda during 1918-1919. Some of Lawrence’s darkestthoughts and fears plagued him duringthis time and he took refuge in thecommanding aspects that dominated theview from his window. This bus tour willinclude a visit to Mountain Cottage whereClive Leivers, from Haggs FarmPreservation Society, will deliver a talkwhich concentrates on Lawrence's response to the Derbyshirecountryside and landscape as revealed in his letters and some of hissubsequent fiction. D.H. Lawrence Festival Gala EveningWednesday 30th SeptemberJoin us for the grande finale of the D. H. Lawrence Festival 2009.Students from Eastwood Comprehensive will perform readings andscenes from Lawrence’s work, as well as showcasing new work fromEastwood and local writers. There will be music, as well as nibbles and

drinks – it promises to bring the Festival to a rousingconclusion!
