From the Editor’s Pen
Maternal and Child Healthcare has been a prime
concern in the Bangladesh’s health sector, especially in
achieving targets set below in the Millennium
Development Goals 4 & 5:
MDGs Target Bangladesh Target
MDG 4:
Reduce Child
Mortality
Reduce by two-thirds
By 2015 under-five
mortality rate.
Reduce under-five mortality
from 151 deaths per 1,000
live births in 1990 to 50 by
2015.
MDG 5:
Improving
Maternal
Health
Reduce by three
quarters, by 2015 the
maternal mortality
ratio.
• Reduce the Maternal Mortality Ratio from 574
to 143 deaths per by 2015.
• Achieve 50% skilled atten-dance at delivery by 2010.
Although Bangladesh has made significant progress in
the healthcare services in the last three decades,
overall achievements in the MDG target has been
rather slow. Maternal mortality is slowly declining with
320 deaths per 100,000 (2001), but is not in track for
MDG 5. Similarly, neonatal (0-28 days) mortality has
been slow although there has been rapid decline in post-
natal (1-11 months) and child (12-59 months) mortality.
These achievements are mainly due to universal cover-
age for immunization and Vitamin A supplementation.
The Facility delivery has increased significantly mainly
due to increasing private facilities whereas the Home
delivery by skilled attendants has been slow.
Robust MCH service is the most important activity for
the health of the nation which is dependent on prag-
matic programs and action plan; concerted effort
between public-private sector; and support of the prof-
essional bodies, NGOs and international development
partners like WHO, UNICEF, etc.
Rotarians can play an important role in achieving the
MDG target through concerted effort with the
Government and other agencies. Rotary Club of Dhaka
can play an important role, especially in increasing Home
delivery facility by developing skilled attendants
through training and other healthcare support in
keeping with the Rotary theme ‘Be a gift to the world’.
