What is DHCP?

• Extension of BOOTP– Bootstrap Protocol– discover its own IP address– IP address of a BOOTP server on the network– file to be loaded into MEM to boot the machine– Boots without requiring a hard or floppy drive– RFC 951

Who Created DHCP?

• Dynamic Host Configuration Working Group– Internet Engineering Task Force– Internet Activities Board

The Purpose of DHCP

• Provide dynamic allocation of IP client configuration for a lease period

• Eliminate the work necessary to administer a large IP Network

Page 6: DHCP

How Does DHCP Work?

• Broadcasts request for address Information

• Receives request, assigns new address for lease period, sends to client with other config info

• Client acknowledges, sets up its config• Server attempts to return same address

every time the client requests one• Client control

Advantages of DHCP over Manual Configurations:

• *Note• No Wasted Numbers• Control• Major Network Resource Changes

Ease of Set Up and Administration

• Centralized Management

• Easy

• Client Addresses assigned automatically
