The International The International Linear Collider (ILC)Linear Collider (ILC)

•Electron-positron collisions at up to 1 TeV

•Crucial for precision measurements of new physics expected from the Large Hadron Collider (to start in2007)

•Adopted by community as the next project after LHC

•Already involves 1000+ scientists from ~100 institutions all over the world

•Total budget on the order of $10B

•Target start-of-operation: 2015

•Excellent chances of being sited close to Fermilab/NIU (site studies funded in part by NIU)

•New algorithms for event reconstruction•Goal: ×2 improvement over current best in jet energy

resolution

•Detector design driven by algorithm performance

•Hadron calorimeter

•1.2m thick barrel can hold a schoolbus inside

•~40 layers of quarter-sized scintillating cells (~5M)

•Made possible by recent developments in silicon photodetectors

•Detector Simulation

•Both hardware and algorithm development depend crucially on realistic simulation

NIU is a key contributor to all of the above

Particle Physics’ Particle Physics’ ObjectiveObjectiveWhat are the “fundamental”

building blocks of nature, and how do they interact?

The question only makes sense in the context of the tiniest distances, or, equivalently, the highest energies that we are able to access (E=h).

Today we, the particle physicists, are studying Nature’s structures and laws down to attometers, or, nano-nano-meters.
