The Lady Hopetoun lit up by the sunset Photo: John Lacey
The DH Lawrence Society ofAustralia held its annual SydneyHarbour cruise on the evening ofSaturday, 8 November, 2008.
The previous few days had seenvarying weather: hot, humid, cool, and wet. Saturday was overcast andwindy in the morning, then the skydarkened even more and there weresome showers. By the afternoon the
Lady Hopetoun's whistle as we tookadvantage of the wide space near theRiverview College wharf to turn andhead down Harbour to the ParramattaRiver.
It was still overcast as we steamed upthe Parramatta River to beyondAbbotsford, where we turned for a cruiseback to the main Harbour. Approachingthe arched Gladesville Bridge, the sun
rain had retreated and the winds hadmoderated, but there was a warningof strong coastal winds and asoutherly change.
Last year's Harbour cruise was heldon the day the drought broke and ourplans had to change, but ourmembers saw a sight none of us hadever seen before: waterfallsstreaming off the Harbour Bridge.Would we see a novel sight thisyear?
Given the above weather conditions, the cruise plan was discussed withthe crew and modified to give us abetter view of the jacarandas (thecruise was being held in the Sydneyjacaranda month of "Mauvember"after all). As the 1902- built VIP yachtLady Hopetoun steamed out ofRozelle Bay under a leaden sky, thepassengers saw the first jacarandason the Balmain- Birchgrovepeninsula, yet they were but paltryexamples of what was to be seen onthe banks of the Lane Cove Riverfurther up the Harbour.
We saw stands of jacarandas, framed by bougainvillea (particularlynoted in one Greenwich backyard),and flame trees, and the members ofthe Longueville Sailing Club cheeringthe sound of the
appeared for the first time on the day.The clouds lifted and the passengerswere treated to almost an hour of themost glorious display of sunset colours.
The sky was full of turquoise, and thenpinks and purples and reds as LadyHopetoun steamed back towards thecity.
Some on board claimed to have neverseen such colours in the sky before, andthe magic continued as the LadyHopetoun steamed past Goat Island, and the eastern city buildings reflectedthe very last of the setting sunlight intheir office windows.
We steamed under the Harbour Bridgeand passed Fort Denison. What a viewthere was of the city lights as werounded Clark Island.
Observing the marvellous display of lighton the Harbour, one member, echoedthe feeling of many of us: "Why wouldyou live anywhere else? Isn't thisRananim?"
Three views of Sydney: from the West, from the rivers, from the easternHarbour - the leaden, grey, overcast sky,the glorious sunset, then the sublimeaftermath. A cruise and a day toremember.

RANANIM NOW A VIRTUAL
REALITY The DH Lawrence Society of Australia was in thevanguard of modern publishing and IT when, lastMarch, we announced that future issues ofRananim would be online only.
Now, The Christian Science Monitor, a great andvenerable US newspaper has followed suit andwill no longer publish a hard copy edition: it willbe available, like Rananim, solely online.
Publishing only online has at least two bigadvantages: it costs only a tiny amount because ofthe savings on paper, printing and distribution. And it means we can publish more often. When anevent of interest to the Society takan event takesplace we can put up a story and photos about itquickly.
This issue contains the story and pictures of ourJacaranda Cruise on the steam yacht LadyHopetoun (Page 1) with more photos on followingpages), and an interesting article by one of our UKcorrespondents, Joanthan Long, on the artist MarkGertler who was a close friend of Lawrence (seepage 1).
We will try and alert you by email to future virtualeditions of Rananim but we also suggest you callup www.cybersydney.com.au/dhl from time-to-time to check out our latest editions.
CONTRIBUTIONS TO RANANIM
Contributions to Rananim are welcomed. If youare able to send your article by e-mail please sendit to [email protected]. Please useMicrosoft Word. We are trying to standardise thestyle: indent the first word of each paragraph
5mm and don't make a line space betweenparagraphs. Put titles of books in upper and lowercase italics, and don't put quotation marks aroundthem. If you want to quote from a publishedbook, please do not indent it but make a one linespace before and after the quotation. But mark itas an indent if you also send a hard copy. Manythanks - it will save a lot of time! Please contactthe publisher, Sandra Jobson, for further styledetails and formatting([email protected])..
