Dho Journal 2012As most will know, Sheridan Killwick has resigned as Wengen Manager. She has an ageing mother and her partner Sean has ageing parents who live very close to them both of whom are in need of frequent attention.

They both feel it inappropriate to be away for up to 3 months of the year and thus it was with sadness that the Directors and Committee accepted Sheridan’s resignation towards the end of last season. She has done a superb job for us and was not always as well treated by every member as she deserved. She is being replaced by Andrew Davies (who we hasten to add is unrelated to either main committee members Max and Susie Davies, who are themselves unrelated to each other!). Andrew was chosen from an application list of 22 candidates and eventually made it to a short list of 6 who were interviewed by Skype. This resulted in a final short list of 3, who were then interviewed face to face by Max Davies, Michael Woodhall and Susie Davies, President and vice Presidents respectively.

Only after very careful consideration and discussion was the post finally offered to, and accepted by Andrew Davies, who lives in Edinburgh, and is currently working as a Senior Development Tutor with the Venture Trust in Scotland. He is BASI 2 qualified, has many years’ skiing experience, and in addition has hosted skiing holidays of varying kinds – including several in the Jungfrau Region. He and his delightful wife Hayley (who also met and had discussions with the interviewing team) have just had their first child, Lachlan. All three of them will be coming to Wengen early in December 2012, where Andrew will prepare for the opening of the ski season.

Max Davies departs as PresidentAfter a 7 year stint as president, Max has decided to call it a day. He is expected to be replaced by Michael Woodhall who will be proposed as Max’s successor at the AGM. Max has supervised the club’s fortunes over some of its most exciting and turbulent years. We left the old Curling Club Hut and acquired our own magnificent premises in the Eiger building. Max’s extensive experience in the property market was instrumental in making this possible due to our having a man at the helm who understood the market. We hope that in

future he and Eden will have more time in Wengen away from the politics inevitable in any club and can just enjoy themselves.

New rules and Articles of AssociationProfessional advisers have put in many man-weeks of work on consulting others both within the club and outside. Of particular note, Ed Perrott and Huw Alban Davies put in many hours without cost to the club and whilst it would perhaps be unfair to mention every person who contributed to their discussions, it might be appropriate to mention Tony Davis whose contributions have been significant.

Club Room RulesThere is one unwritten rule by which members are expected to abide. Consumer of alcoholic beverages or not, you are expected to place something behind the bar of at least a half drinkable standard. If you consume 2 drinks a night of anything, then place another bottle there after 3 days. Some (mercifully few) have been seen to take drinks, but never actually place a bottle behind the bar. We don’t keep a tally, but often those who do abide by the rules are apt to notice if someone takes and never gives.

On New Year’s Eve, 2011, visitors to Wengen could see the white cross on a red background of the Swiss National flag projected onto the Jungfrau. And each night thereafter for some 2 weeks.

Jungfraubahn CentenaryRolf Wegmüller, head of the Wengen Tourismus was up at Männlichen on the evening of 11th January and took the above photograph, which he was happy to give us permission to reproduce in the Journal.

Wengen Curling ClubThe Wengen Curling Club long precedes us as a Wengen based club, having last year celebrated its Centenary since it was formed in 1911. So it was 14 years old when the DHO was formed and 25 years old when the DHO Journal first appeared. Most years since then, we have included a report on the happenings of our older colleagues. Last year Fred MacKenzie, a regular contributor to the Journal, retired as secretary of the WCC and we suppose that may be the reason why we received no report from them for inclusion

in this year’s Journal. We rather half-heartedly attempted to solicit a report but without success.

Over the years Ken Foster and others have thanked the WCC for their help and assist-ance over many matters which we in the DHO have been most lucky and grateful to have received. Not least of these has been their generously sharing with us THEIR hut (despite our immediately christening it the DHO hut!) for close to 30 years.

You could argue that since we no longer share premises with them, perhaps now is as good a time as any to cease to include WCC reports in the DHO Journal. Personally I feel that we have no reason to change the habits that commenced in 1936 and although reports have missed a year or two occasionally, it would be a pity to entirely cease publication. Perhaps DHO members who are also WCC members (the Patersons spring to mind) might like to see which way the land lies.

Timothy Trembath was planning a skiing holiday in Wengen this last season. His daughter Charlotte Clark, a member since 2004 organised to buy him a membership and a DHO tie as a Christmas present.

Dho Membership as a Christmas present...

The photograph shows Timothy with his presents at Christmas before he had a chance to use them in Wengen.

In the interest of inter-club relationships David Verden Anderson asked our President Max Davies as his guest to attend the Dundee Ski Club 75th anniversary dinner. Max is seen seated with the DSC surviving ex-presidents (David is not an ex-president and therefore not included in the photo), but adjacent to Max is Hilda

Dundee Ski ClubJamieson, 99 years old and still skiing, she skied in Meribel this year. Better known, perhaps, to our members as the mother of those great skiers, the Jamieson sisters, Helen, Val and Sheila. All 3 of them skied for Scotland.

Caroline Ponsonby, an artist who has visited Wengen for the past few years and will be there again over Christmas, describes herself as “a figurative oil painter, who likes to work from preparatory sketches done on location and then worked up in the studio” will be mounting an exhibition in the Club Room between March 6th and March 16th. The exhibition will comprise up to 30 different paintings of varying sizes (but not too big with transportation in mind). All will be of scenes around the village of Wengen or the

nearby mountains. All will be oil paintings. Oils are inevitably more expensive than other forms of painting, but nevertheless Caroline’s prices will start at around the very good value of £500, but some of the larger ones will be rather more expensive.

The exhibition is planned to be publicised through the Wengen Tourist office and will move out to a hotel for the day of our weekly Club Room Drinks Party Night.

Photographic CompetitionDuring McMillan week, the Club Room Committee will be organising a photographic competition. Subjects should be ski related and can be submitted to the Wengen Manager at any time, but no later than the Sunday of that week (Sunday 3rd February). Photos will be judged and the best exhibited in the Club Room during that week, with the winner being announced at the end of the week.

There is no mention of the prize for the winner, perhaps a small bar of Toblerone? Or perhaps something bigger and better and more fattening?

Mr and Mrs Robert EastwoodThe above rather formal heading attempts to add a slightly sombre and respectful tone to the fact that Bob and Rachel got married on Saturday 25th August. We wish them both Health, Wealth and Happiness. There was a collection amongst our members and a painting by Rupert Head was commissioned and purchased.

Max Davies presented the painting on our behalf along with a largish cheque for the balance of that collection. Bob asked if we would mention that both he and Rachel are extremely thankful and very grateful for the generous gift collected from so many of their friends and fellow members.

Alan Norris sent us the adjacent photograph which he took on Black Rock looking back towards Eiger Gletscher. Called a Sundog,(scientific name Parhelian) it is not dissimilar to a rainbow in the sense that it is formed by the refraction of sunlight, in this case, by ice crystals in the air, rather than water droplets as in the case of a rainbow. February’s bitterly cold weather was well suited to allow sundogs to be seen.

The following explanation from Wikipedia, may help those who wish to know more.

Sundogs are made commonly of plate-shaped hexagonal ice crystals in high andcold cirrus clouds or, during very coldweather, by ice crystals called diamond

Sundog at black Rock

dust drifting in the air at low levels. These crystals act as prisms, bending the light rays passing through them with a minimumdeflection of 22°. If the crystals are randomly oriented, a complete ring around the sun is seen — a halo. But often, as the crystals sink through the air they become verticallyaligned, so sunlight is refracted horizontally

The DHO Journal editor is a bit of a self-appointed expert on the history of Alpine Skiing. So it came as a surprise to discover just how much he didn’t know about the subject. Reading Harry Stone’s book has certainly filled many holes in my knowledge. I am sorry he did not discuss some items with us beforehand and thus a few imperfections such as crediting Mac’s Leap to the Mürren side of the Lauterbrunnen valley instead of down the Tschuggen Glade to Grindelwald, or mis-naming Ernst Gertsch as Oscar Gert-sch might have been avoided. Clearly one of Harry Stones’ sources was Elisabeth Hussey, a past editor of the SCGB magazine Ski Survey and prob-ably the UK’s best ski historian. So some of the history is perhaps a little bit biased towards Arnold Lunn’s version of the history of skiing. Elisabeth worked for Arnie for many years.

Some of the old photos have been copied out of magazines. Thus they were already “screened” (reduced to dots).

Book Review:

SKi Joy - The Story of winter Sports by harry StoneReducing a previously screened print to dots a second time results in a screen clash where the photograph looks for all the world as if the camera that took it was the wrong side of a chain link fence. There is a technique using the digital paint software Adobe Photoshop that can significantly reduce this unsightly phenomenon and it is a pity that it was not used .

In conclusion, not a perfect publication, but it is not expensive, it deserves to sell readily and it is full of masses of useful information. It does include an accurate description of the formation of the DHO and includes several little cameos about Chris Mackintosh, Alan D’Egville, John Joannides, “Mongoose” Soden, Andrew Walser, Dick Waghorn and Antony Knebworth to name but a few of those who were instrumental in inventing and establishing Alpine skiing in the Jungfrau region in the Twenties.

Softback, A4 in size, just under 150 pages in length, it is due to be available on the web within a few weeks. Thoroughly recommended.

— in this case, sundogs are seen.

As the sun rises higher, the rays passing through the crystals are increasingly skewed from the horizontal plane. Their angle of deviation increases and the sundogs move further from the sun. However, they always stay at the same elevation as the sun.

THE HISTORY OF SKI JUMPINGTim Ashburner

‘It’s a beautiful volume, and I am very impressed. The pictures are most interesting – several are new to me. I did not know it was possible to find photographs of so many of the early European skiers…And you certainly have a sharp pen – I was laughing out loud several times into the book. Again, thanks for the copy. I am honoured to be mentioned.’Rune Flaten, Archivist, Foreningen til Ski Idrettens, Fremme, Oslo

‘I can only say: Fantastic, fantastic, fantastic again! It seems to me unbelievable that someone can research so far back about a sport nobody has written much about before. There is so much about skiing and ski jumping that I did not know…Tim you are a champion!’Karl Molitor, Wengen

‘I might as well be honest with you. I did not think you could produce a book anything like as good. It is excellent.’Inge Christophersen

‘I believe he is in that long and very great tradition of English and Scottish writers who, beginning with Sir Arthur Conan Doyle and continuing with Somerville, Richardson and Arnold Lunn, have left for future generations enduring histories of the beginnings of skiing.’David Parnell

wengen Manager’s ReportSheridan Killwick, winter 2011/12

We set off from England not knowing if we could start skiing or not in Wengen when we got there. The snow was very late in coming this season and one or two people who had hoped for an early season ski were disappointed. Needless to say the snow did arrive and although we couldn’t ski on the Wengen pistes for the first week of the season we did ski every day in Mürren.

The Wengen pistes did finally open just before Christmas and the conditions were great. A lot of regular DHO members were out over the Christmas and New Year holidays and we had a good turnout for the Heinz cup race which was won this time by Team Essen. The team members were Phil and Christine Comelio whose son Sebastian was training with Ingie and the DHO trainees, Simon Williamson and Robert Brignall. It snowed pretty much all day and a lot of the team members admitted that had it not been for the Heinz cup they may have chosen not to ski, however the quiz gave them a sense of determination and purpose for the day. Prize giving was held as usual in the DHO Club Room and the winning team sang their poem/song to us all; not only did they have the most points but their poem was the best overall as well.

On New Year’s day we received some great news - Bob Eastwood and Rachel Anderton got engaged on New Year’s Eve. Congratulations to them both. News of this travelled very quickly among DHO members and Wengen locals, I knew before Bob told me!! We are all very happy for them.

Newly installed this season was a glass cabinet to house all the archive DHO journals they are available for members to look at in the Club Room or to view on the DHO website. Sean sourced and installed the cabinet and we donated the granite top. It was really nice to look through the old journals especially for me to look up when my grandparents first became DHO members back in 1936. My grandfather Major George Killwick also was a keen curler and won the Buhlmann cup in 1953, this, too, is all documented in the DHO journals. I am sure he would have been very proud to know that I had been the DHO Wengen Manager for four seasons.

It was a real pleasure to see the delight the archive journals brought to others as well who came in to look up details of their family or friends and read about them or look at their photos. All the journals are in excellent condition and are all laminated and bound to protect them for years to come.

We had a party in the DHO Club Room in December to thank the locals and members who had helped make the Amateur Inter Club Championships such a success when the DHO hosted them in March 2011. We all enjoyed the delicious canapés and mince pies as well as the Prosecco. Thank you to all who helped make this evening a success. This season, championships were held in Gstaad (see more details in the AICC Journal report).

There was plenty of snow this year for the Lauberhorn race and Wengen came alive on Friday 13 January with every train coming up from Lauterbrunnen full of people coming to watch the Super Combination which was won by Ivica Kostelic from Croatia, second was Beat Feuz from Switzerland and third was Bode Miller from USA. The Swiss were out celebrating on Friday evening, the streets and all the bars were buzzing. The sun shone all weekend Wengen looked at its best on the television.

We held an extra DHO race on Thursday 19 January and Martin, the DHO Leader and I decided to run a slightly different race. The idea was everyone got two runs and the winner was the person whose time was most consistent with the least time difference thus giving all entrants a chance of winning rather

than it being the fastest person overall which often results in the same person winning.

Paul Zvegintzov, who of course during his time as DHO Wengen Secretary was too busy laying on races and was never able to take part, won, His time was 0.14 different, in second place was Cynthia Perkins her time difference was 0.30 and in third place was Alastair Drew with a time difference of 0.50.

We had a slightly smaller Inferno team than last season, however they did very well and four of the DHO team members got bronze medals; well done! The Railway Cup was held earlier this season on Thursday 26 January, it was the only sunny day that week, we were very lucky. We had an excellent turn out and Marco Luggen from the Jungfrau Railway put on a splendid race bearing in mind he had been newly appointed in his role. Norman Freund was the well deserved winner and it was espe-cially nice as all his family were there to help him celebrate including his son Colin who lives in America. Speaking of the Freund family I was very pleased to hear that Andy Seaman had proposed to Anne Freund on Valentine’s Day. Congratulations to you both.

The week after the Railway Cup was, of course, DHO race week when many regular members are in Wengen to take part in the McMillan cup race and the Lucy Dicker night slalom. We had great turn outs for both races and despite the cold and poor visibility for the McMillan cup we had 38 entrants. There was a very welcome sight at the finishWalter Steuri and his wife Margrit had set up a table and were serving hot wine and cheese.

Jean Daniel Gluck was the overall winner of the McMillan Cup race; he also did very well for the DHO in the 2011 and 2012 Amateur Inter Club races. Lucy Maskey was the winner of the Lucy Dicker and she won the Security cup and Lockhart cup in the McMillan race. She also did very well for the DHO in the 2011 Amateur Inter Club races.

Max also presented the Waldo Cup at the prize giving to Sarah Hoyle to thank her for her great contribution to the DHO and her work as Honorary Secretary during his Presidency. Freddie Whitelaw was disappointed when he missed a photo opportunity of Sarah Hoyle. She was with her husband Roger getting on the train to Lauterbrunnen. They were carrying a heavy box of trophies from the School Boy races and taking them to Interlaken to the engravers. I think Freddie was hoping for a photo to give to the police of the thieves stealing all our silverware! A lot of work goes on behind the scenes that many are not aware of and goes un-thanked.

The poor start to the season was quickly forgotten and we had some amazing skiing with the members both on and of the piste and many took home lasting memories and photos of the great days out they had with the DHO led ski groups.

Peter Lightfoot commented that he had the best week’s skiing for a long time. It is very rewarding to hear such commentsfrom members who have enjoyed skiing in the DHO led groups. Many other members were out with us enjoying the fresh snow that week. Lots of other races and events went on during the season including a couple

of dinners at Club Med and a couple up at Allmend, lunch with René Seiler at Jägerstübli who had all the women queuing up to have their photo taken with him. I was lucky enough to be invited to ski with him which was great fun. Richard Lovell gave a talk about his 28 day trip to the Magnetic North Pole pulling a sled weighing 150lbs where he raised money for Motor Neurone Disease back in 1997.

The final event was the President’s party, it was a great evening and it is such a good opportunity for us to thank all the locals for their continued support of the DHO. It was dry so we were able to spread out on to the terrace and we were serenaded by two Alp horn players who played outside the Club Room by the station. Thank you to all the DHO members who helped to make this such a successful evening.

I would like to take this opportunity to thank the many members who helped and supported me during my four years as the DHO Manager and to say how much I have enjoyed leading the members around the Jungfrau Region. I am looking forward to enjoying holidays and participating in DHO races in the future as I have done so in the past since becoming a DHO member in 1991.

DHOJournal•2012•11

An introduction to the next wengen Manager - Andrew DaviesSkiing has excited me almost my whole life. My grandfather loved skiing on a Sunday from his armchair in Gloucestershire and I was thrilled to have the opportunity to learn to ski on the dry slopes of Hillend, Edinburgh whilst still at primary school.

When I was 11 our Swiss friends invited me to join them in their family home to ski on snow for the first time. Then my Uncle invited me to join him several years in succession to enjoy New Year in New England. These were the years when it was considered essential to be waiting for the chair lift to open in the morning and to catch the last one up at the end of the day. We managed it most days despite a 2 hour drive from our accommodation to the slopes. At 17 I sustained a basal skull fracture crashing into a tree at Sunday River resort in New Hampshire; I now ski in a helmet and strongly encourage all with whom I ski to wear one also. Accompanying others skiing is a passion of mine, I really enjoy being a part of great days out on the hill or mountain; whether it be an adventure in high winds and poor visibility, a coffee and cake tour on a -23 day or the thrill of knee deep fresh snow

on the first sunny day of the week. I have shared hundreds of these sorts of days in ski areas such as the Espace Killy, Bansko, Kitzbuhel, the Jungfrau region, Verbier, Le Grand Massif, Les Diableret, Crans Montana, Sunday River, Loon Mountain and Canon 93.

Having always enjoyed and considered important socialising with my family and friends, I was delighted to marry Hayley and become part of her large extended family. Hayley’s family seemed to have more social events than my own! In terms of character my friends have often described me as being similar to Baloo from the jungle book or perhaps Tigger, the well known friend of Winnie the Pooh.

I met Hayley in 1998 at the Baptist Church in which I grew up and we were married in the church in 2002. During this period I found myself working with a wide spectrum of people; I worked in sales, customer service, hospitality and staff-training. I already loved the mountains and now I sought to use my skills in that environment. I gained a place at the Abernethy Trust School of Adventure

Leadership in 2000 where I spent one year learning and practicing being safe in the mountains whilst coaching, guiding and playing on skis, mountain bikes, in canoes, on foot and on rock. That winter we had 70 days on snow at the Nevis Range Scottish Ski centre, although not all of them were sunny and calm following a fresh snow fall!

Since then I have worked in the outdoors facilitating the fun, skill and personal development of others as well as myself: organising holidays for my peers and my family and planning developmental programmes for varying groups of people at work.

Hayley and I enjoy being with people, supporting and participating in fun food and fellowship indoors or out. We will be living in Edinburgh until December and so if you would like to get in touch you can do so by email on [email protected] . We are both looking forward to meeting all the members of the Downhill Only club.

President’s Report 2012Max Davies

Michael Woodhall, whom many of you already know, is proposed to be taking over at the AGM. Michael has been coming to Wengen for many years, has a great love of the place and has invested in an apartment here. Despite breaking his leg in a spectacular crash in the McMillan Cup some years ago he is still an enthusiast. I wish him every success and am confident that I am leaving the Presidency in a safe pair of hands.

The Club seems to go from strength to strength. We have a very solid membership base, with a presence in Wengen which increases each year. It is a great pleasure to see returning long-standing members who have not been here for a number of years. They in particular enjoy the new Club Room in the Eiger, now in its fourth season. The old Curling Club hut for which we all had, and some of us still have, affection, already seems a distant memory. Our new premises make it easier for members to meet and get to know each other in comfortable and spacious surroundings.

We were particularly blessed with good snow this year for most of the season. I organised a couple of heli-skiing touring days at the end of the season which were brilliant. One is a great favourite of mine. We skied from

the summit of Ebnefluh across the glacier to the Hollandia hut where we refreshed ourselves with hot chocolate and a chat. From there we continued down the Lötschental to the village of Blatten where we enjoyed lunch in the little Eidelweiss Hotel. If you have never experienced a day like that it is something to aim for. It is an entirely different experience from piste-skiing, wonderful though that is in the Jungfrau region. There is a whole new world up there behind those magical mountains, the Jungfrau, Monch and Eiger. To know more about it speak to the Wengen Manager or me who can tell you what to expect.

There is so much going on in the DHO, this is a club which organises so much for its members. It has a comfortable Club House with all the facilities it offers. Our resident Manager organises and leads skiers around the Jungfrau region six days of the week. On the social side there is the Club meeting every evening (occasionally not on Saturdays, the Manager’s rest day) and the official drinks party every Tuesday either in the Club Room or in a local hotel. There are weekly club races. The most prestigious of these is the McMillan Cup, always held onthe first Thursday of February which is now unique in the Alps in that all the racers depart from the start-line together. There are

occasional talks in the evening and there is an increasing trend for members of the Club to use it for special occasions. The Club Room is open most mornings from 10am onwards as a meeting place for non-skiers to have a coffee, use the wi-fi or read (yesterday’s!) papers. All this is a great boon on days when conditions are difficult.

Even if you are not able to visit Wengen every year, you of course still receive the DHO Journal to keep you in touch and up-to-date. Your subscription also helps us train young up-and-coming British skiers, and of course the young are the future of the club. So you will not be surprised to have read recently that an increase in subscription is proposed for this year. Despite which, for many members it will amount to a decrease, since many were paying both the old subscription and the £30 levy. There is no levy now and the proposed increase is less than the levy.

The snow conditions this year were excellent, and this of course meant it was a particularly busy year for the Wengen Manager and her helpers. Sheridan Killwick‘s report will have all the details of that. For my part I would like to pay tribute for the fine work she has done in her four years here. I am sad, as I know many of you are, that she has

i have now completed seven years in the chair as President and at last,

as some of you might say, i am moving over

decided to move on and will not be with us this coming season. She has done a great job for us, particularly with regard to arranging skiing, which after all is what we are essentially about. She has been a very safe pair of hands and many of you will have good memories of wonderful days skiing with her and her assistants both on and off piste. On behalf of us all I thank her and Sean McCarthy. The work of the Manager became so much greater with the advent of the new Club Room and before any other arrangements were put in place they shouldered much of that responsibility without letting it impair the arrangements for skiing. We wish Sean and Sheridan the very best for their future and hope to see you in Wengen again.

Elsewhere in the Journal you will find an introduction to Sheridan’s successor, Andrew Davies.

Coggins is a particularly important part of the DHO. Its continuous history goes back a long way; many of our present members “did Coggins”, many joined the DHO because their children or even grandchildren “did Coggins”. It goes on beautifully run by Bob Eastwood aided by Rachel Anderton. They have expanded it into Eagles and Adult Coggins, another great section of our Club. Congratulations to them both for running it so well. They became engaged at the beginning of the year and married in August, so congratulations to them both and we wish them all health and happiness.

During these early years of the new Club Room there has never been a shortage ofhelp and support from members. I have been

particularly grateful for that during my time as President; it is what has made the Club Room the success it is, and my experience of it so much more enjoyable. On the other side of the coin are the issues of Governance and Health and Safety. In order that most members can take these matters for granted, they have to be seriously addressed, checked and carefully monitored. This includes Club insurances, finances and this year in particular the re-drafting of our Articles of Association and Rules. I have to say a huge thank you for the able and thorough work done by Dr Huw Alban Davies, Susie Davies, Elaine MacLeod, Edward Perrott, and everyone else who contributed. This has been a herculean task and the result is a document that I hope can confidently be safely filed so that we can all return to the pleasures of the mountains and skiing.

Finally I would like to express my thanks to several people who have made huge contributions to the DHO during the last year. The Racing and Training Section run by Ingie Christophersen MBE, and chaired by Jamie Rankin, has had an excellent year. This is important for our younger members who as I have already said, are the future of the Club.

The growth of the DHO in recent years has necessitated the creation of various sub-committees; the chairmen of these, Brian Phillips, Richard Hackett and Norman Freund have all put a huge amount of time into establishing the “New Way” under the new constitution and their work is appreciated.

The rest of the sub-committee and main committee members cannot go unmentioned.

These include Vice Presidents Michael Woodhall and Susie Davies, Hon Treasurer Duncan Lonie, Edward Perrott our legal adviser and Company Secretary (who is also a fearsome ski racer!), Sarah Hoyle who is DHO Secretary, Elaine MacLeod our Membership Secretary; and Freddie Whitelaw our Hon Editor who knows as much if not more than anyone else about the history of the DHO; Christian Wells has advised in great detail on Insurance matters. We are lucky to have in our organisation members with these very important specialist skills who are happy to contribute their expertise for the benefit of the Club. Thanks must also go to those in Wengen who give us so much support, in particular the Wengen Tourist Office, the Railway and those who look after and build the pistes. They all make us welcome and are unfailingly helpful.

I hope you all have a great summer and look forward to seeing you in Wengen in good snow in the coming season. Do please come to the AGM in London on 29th November at the Imperial Hotel in Russell Square. This will be my last one as President and I will try to put on something original for Members.

Thank you all for your friendship during the last seven years. There has been hard work, but with your support it has been hugely satisfying, and most of all it has been immensely enjoyable. I’m sure the Club has come through all the developments of the last few years in a strong and healthy state with its essential concepts intact. We continue to attract a very diverse and interesting group of people whose one common focus is skiing.

Coggins Report 2012bob Eastwood

It was a bit of a strange start to the season with the snow arriving very late and the local ski area not opening. Coggins are not easily beaten though and the Christmas holidays 2011 saw us heading to Mürren for the first time.

There we found lots of lovely powder snow to play in and a new area to explore. Back at Kleine Scheidegg, when it finally opened, we had the novel experience of the piste markers going in as we descended to Arven. We were the very first skiers of the season on the Brandegg run . We were not able to race during the week before Christmas but we had great fun learning to ski in the powder snow.

Wengen was in full swing for the Christmas races which took place on Bumps in cold and snowy conditions. Our vorlaufer Libby Gay set the pace, and the girls showed the way in the race with Isabel Egger (1st) and Caroline Gay (2nd) fighting it out for first place. Charlie Spicer hit form to take the 3rd place and 1st boy. Several former Coggins couldn’t resist joining in and raced after the Coggins. Parents helped with keeping the racers entertained and safe during the race, and with putting all the race equipment away afterwards.

After the festivities of a very wet New Year’s Eve in Wengen, the Coggins hit the fresh snow on the mountain for a further four days, before being stopped by bad weather at the end of the week. We had another race for the New Year’s Championship, again on Bumps where we saw Zac Coxon winning ahead of Catherine Gay. When the radios failed, due to the cold perhaps, Bob and Rachel ran the whole race using mobile phones!! Like the Coggins, we never give up.

Again there was only one main half term holiday in Britain but we are now getting used to it and had extra leaders, Fiona and Charlie, ready to help. The main feature of the week was the cold, with consistent temperatures of under -20C. Coggins were subjected to “adequate clothing inspections” before we set off in the morning, and extra hot chocolate stops were taken to keep warm. Quote of the week, “I’m not normally this quiet but my mouth is frozen shut!!” We are happy to report that there were no frost injuries amongst our groups or their teachers.

25 Coggins contested the Mid Term Cup on Bumps in cold and dull conditions. The boys were back on form, and the race was won by Toby Francis by just over half a second from Zac Coxon. Katy Ditchfield was 1st girl in third place overall.

During the first week of the Easter holidays we had 18 Coggins racing on the Lauberhorn; many thanks to Heinz Von Allmen for the loan of the racing equipment and for closing the slope for our use. Thanks also to Lisa (Fairfull) and René (Seiler) for helping Bob lay the course in double quick time. It was a shame the fog came in but still a thrill for the kids to be racing on part of the world cup track. The Gay twins, Catherine and Caroline fought it out for first place with Caroline taking the Easter trophy, 1st boy was Sam Waller in third place overall. Conditions were pretty soft that week, but the snow remained good until the lifts started closing for the end of the season, and so another exciting season of Coggins skiing came to a close.

is very good news and shows we must be doing something right.

Gosh! This sounds like a school report. OK. Coggins are “Mad, Bad and Dangerous to know!” Is that better kids?

EaglesThe famous DHO teenage group live up to their name and fly around the mountains. The original group name lives on with the “Snogg’ins trophy”. (The mystery of the apostrophe will become part of DHO myth but is actually down to a certain person’s messy hand writing) This year the trophy was contested at half term on Lauberhorn and won by Michael Nolan ahead of Zak Hopkins.

The idea of Eagles is to provide sociable and challenging skiing for good skiers under the guidance of a top quality young coach. Feed back to me suggests this works very well and they were having a ball skiing from first to last lift every day. Over the February half term a large group of Eagles were rocketing all over the mountain with their glorious leader, Phil Pickles. They spent much of

I know that this has read like a race report but remember that the Coggins race takes only an afternoon in a fun packed week. For some it is the highlight of the week for others just another fun activity. Looking back through the seasons I can see individuals gradually climbing through the rankings with some finally coming out on top before moving on from Coggins, others get the racing bug earlier and move on to race training but can still be seen in our “extra racers” category in the results. To ski a race course at speed one must first ski well. To this end the Coggins training programme of on piste, off piste, bumps, jumps and general mayhem and is a brilliant starting place for a lifetime of skiing.

Ever increasing skill levels amongst the older Coggins have encouraged younger ones to tremendous achievements. I am immensely proud of the standards of skiing achieved by the Coggins as well as by their humour and behaviour. The standard of their skiing as a group on the mountain and of their behaviour in the restaurants often attracts favourable comments and they are a credit to themselves and the club. In a season where there were less guests in Wengen and a general fall in business, Coggins showed an increase of 10% which

their social time together as well, and met up in the Club Room to play cards. The group had a wonderful weeks skiing over the whole Jungfrau region.

ThanksGrateful thanks to the many parents who gave their time to help with races and of course to the people of Wengen who make it such a great place to ski.

Special thanks must go Viktor Gertsch for his generous gift of Slalom poles and stubbies, also to Ercole Famiglietti of the Swiss Ski School and to Heinz Von Allmen of the Jungfrau Bahn for their continued help and support. Of course I must mention the Coggins Team whose enthusiasm and professionalism makes it all happen and my life a little easier, Coggins coaches, Rachel, Fiona, Anya, Charlie, Karen and Julia. Eagles leaders, Henry and Phil.

Congratulations to Rachel for gaining her Level 3 Coaches Award to add to her list of qualifications.

british SchoolboysMeiringen, Switzerland 2012

The Kings College Ski Team arrived en masse on our gigantic coach just before midnight on Friday - all 14 boys and 14 mad parents – we might not be the best team at the Schoolboys – but we certainly are always the biggest!

Once again, lovely Simon from the ski shop next to the hotel opened up specially to kit out any who needed equipment – which was hugely convenient as we missed the Saturday morning bun fight. Snow conditions promised to be perfect – as big dumps had arrived all over the Alps. The Viktoria were their usual efficient, well oiled machine – all keys waiting in reception and a customised ski tuning room that is surely the best at any race! Due to the heavy snowfall and icy conditions underneath – the avalanche risk was great – so no off-piste for any testosterone fuelled daredevils. This year’s races promised to be fantastic with over 150 boys competing from over 30 schools. (I count all the individual schools as well!)

The DHO were out in force with record numbers - Josh Deru, Will and Sam Leavitt, Luke Maynard and Jamie Saunders from King’s College. Also competing were para-Olympian James Whitley (who is

getting very close to qualifying for the Olympics/World Cup) and Benjamin Stammers both from Millfield, George Logut from Kingswood House and Nicholas Myrsep France from Bethany.

We awoke Saturday morning bright and early for the usual cracking Viktoria breakfast followed by a full day of GS training. Thick fog blanketed the mountain – though we did manage to get a peep of beautiful clear skies up at Alpen Tower to reveal a breathtaking view so gorgeous that even teenage boys stopped to take photos!

On Sunday all the teams were hugely excited for the most popular event of the competition – the Parallel Slalom. Sadly once we all got up to Bidmi no one could see two feet in front of them – so the race was postponed for an hour. Fortune smiled upon us all – when things cleared up enough to race. And what a race! The U19 final featured two of the top school ski teams – Tonbridge A vs Reed’s – with Reed’s the winners! The U15 parallel final was between a scratch team made up of Dulwich (B) and Nicholas Myrsep France and Alex White (Kandahar) vs Cowbridge B – with Dulwich B winning.

This year Glan Williams had the brilliant idea to have a Plate competition – which meant all the boys had at least 2 runs. The assembled cheering parents and coaches were treated to a comedy of crashes in the last leg – with our own Kings A winning. (If there is any kind and generous DHO member out there who would like to donate a super portable PA system for this race it would be greatly appreciated – it is the only teeny thing that would make things even more exciting!) There was one unfortunate injury – young Daniel Versloot from the up and coming Sherborne team, was charging down the course having a super run – and had a nasty crash just on the last gate. He was unable to race on Monday – but bravely rallied for the slalom on Tuesday – where he had an excellent top 15 second run time.

The atmosphere was electric for the paral-lel races – all the spectators thoroughly enjoyed it. Despite a fierce drive to outski their opponents - all the boys showed lovely sportsmanship after each run – shaking hands like proper gentleman – a credit to all their parents!

Sunday night’s lively team captains’ meeting featured some entertaining mini dramas –

One always hopes that when one volunteers for gatekeeping duty one receives a set of gates where no one crashes – sadly dear readers – this was not the case for yours truly. Gate 30 – or ‘Hamburger Hill’ as I came to know it was a tricky bit of piste after a ridge – and many an unsuspecting boy went down here! Happily – there were some brilliant recoveries and most of them carried on to finish – showing their mettle.

The Children One GS winners were, in first place, Finlay Davies of Danetre School, William Feneley of Fakenham High in sec-ond and Morgan Lynn Davies from Reed’s in third. In Children 2: the DHO were ably represented with fast new boy Mizuki O’Hara of Aiglon in first, Hugo Ng of Aiglon in second and Luke Maynard from King’s

our own Ingie Christophersen – never one to mince words – kept all in their place! With the debates amicably settled – the bibs were tossed to the waiting team captains – and everyone was off to dinner and an early bed.

On Monday morning we were dismayed to have yet more pea soup conditions – actually that is an insult to peas everywhere – it was worse than pea soup! The visibility was so awful the poor fellow who was to be boss of all the gatekeepers Adam Nicol (a thankless job if ever there was one) actually got lost with all the clip boards! Luckily his timing was eventually impeccable and he arrived just as the first intrepid forerunners were whizzing down – bang on time. Again – we were lucky and the visibility on the course improved dramatically.

Jamie Saunders

College in third. Nicholas Myrsep France (Bethany) came 8th in the first run and 7th in the second run (CH2). James Whitley (Millfield) came 6th in the first run and 5th in the second. Jamie Saunders was sadly a DNF for the first run – but managed a highly commendable 9th in CH1 in the second run. In Junior 1 – in first place England Team member Tom Doyle from Millfield, in second, James Sieber from Reed’s and in third place it was Hobie Greenfield from Aiglon who just edged out George Logut by a mere .11. Junior 2 winners were GB Team star Nick Moynihan in 1st place from Tonbridge, England Team member James Stevenson from Aiglon in 2nd followed by Samuel Stephens from Reed’s in 3rd. The lucky boy fastest enough to win the GS unregistered DHO training prize was Hal Smith from Dulwich College.

The final day of the competition featured the slalom. The juniors were first out of the start gate. Tonbridge’s Nick Moynihan’s first run time of 37.71 proved just too awesome to beat – his second run wasn’t too shabby either, and he easily skied away with first place in Junior 2 by over 2 seconds – quite an achievement against stiff competition. James Stevenson from ski racing giants Aiglon College was second followed by Samuel Stephens from Reed’s in third place. The DHO junior boys did very well in the SL overall – all finishing in the top 10 with Josh leading the way in 7th followed closely by George Logut in 8th (4th in J1) and Ben Stammers in 10th position (5th in J1). Josh

bagged the bronze in JN1 Slalom - with Tom Doyle in 1st and the exotically named Calixte Mestelan from Aiglon in 2nd.

Next it was the Children’s turn – and again the DHO were impressive with two on the podium. Mizuki O’Hara was sensational from Aiglon – in first place for CH2 – followed in eerily dejavu-ish order by his teammate from Aiglon Hugo Ng in second and Luke Maynard in third. In CH1 the winner was again Finlay Davies from Danetre School with Morgan Lynn Davies from Reed’s in 2nd followed by Ben Shaw from Abbey Gate College in 3rd place. Nicholas Myrsep France was 7th in CH2 in both runs of the slalom and James Whitley was 6th in CH2 in the second run. Jamie Saunders skied very well in both runs to finish in the top 10 for CH1.

Special mention must go to the smashing Leavitt twins (or the Leavittae as I liked to call them) – brand new to racing they were thrown in at the deep end and acquitted themselves beautifully. Sam finished in the middle of a competitive field in one of the Slalom runs – and Will kept a cool head during the red hot parallel slalom - muscle-ing a key recovery to win it for his team.

Best British School team overall was awarded to (quelle surprise!) Aiglon 1, in second was Tonbridge 1 and in third Reed’s A. In the Unregistered Team category the winners were Harrow in first, Millfield 2 in second and Abbeygate A in 3rd.

All the schools had a super time – as always. If you can only do one race in a season – this is the one to do! Great competition, exciting atmosphere and superb sportsmanship – truly a unique opportunity for all the boys. We shall certainly be back next year with our usual cast of thousands.

The races ran like a top – despite the often appalling visibility problems. Many many thanks to all the hard working organizers – Sam Shnaps did a super job as Chief of Race, the gorgeous Rachel Blake, lovely Beverley and dashing Maurice from the hugely appreciated SnOasis, adorable Sarah

Hoyle, Sid James our visiting TD, Gareth Trayner Referee, Neil and Anne (do love the way she says Dul which!) the irrepressible Ingie and most especially to the Posh and Becks of Schools Racing – Maureen and Rikki Berry!

british Schoolgirls’ RacesAnne Taylor and Sarah Robinson

Last year the schoolgirls arrived in Flaine to a resort of dry clear roads, sunshine and very little snow. So little, in fact, that they could not use one of the lifts. This year the snow arrived with a vengeance just before Christmas and kept on coming. Saturday 28 January saw the resort full of happy, chatty, smiling schoolgirls, some embarking from mini-buses, full to the brim with the vast piles of luggage that seem to be essential, not to mention the large ski and boot bags, whilst those girls who had arrived earlier were waiting outside the ESF ready to meet their trainers for the day.

Sunday was very cold and again even more girls congregated to meet their trainers. After some warm up skiing the girls practiced a mixture of giant slalom and slalom techniques, stopping for a quick lunch in one of the two restaurants that offer a special menu. Many schools brought extra girls and it was after the training session that their final teams were selected. The DHO was represented this year by Sarah Adams, Safia Dale and Sophie Lismore. Also there, representing their schools, were Poppy Hartley (Bryanston), Lucy Maynard (Wycombe Abbey) and Sophie Stammers (Millfield).

Monday started off cold and overcast with the girls inspecting the Giant Slalom before the race began. There were some very good times and it was amazing to see the standard of the girls compared to a few years ago. Emily Evans (Kandahar) came down in the fastest time followed by Charlotte Guest (Strathallan). Honor Clissold (Richmond) was third and first in Children 2 with Katya Williams (Kandahar) the best of the children 1 girls in 14th overall. Poppy was the best of the DHO girls in 15th place with Sophie Lismore next, and second in children 1, followed by Sophie Stammers. The Kandahar were the best team with the DHO finishing tenth out of fifty one, just ahead of Sophie Stammers’ Millfield. The DHO prize of a week’s training at the October camp for the best unregistered children 1 girl, who is not a member of ski racing club, went to Lily Woodbridge from Lambrook.

The parallel slalom, the most exciting and fiercely contested race of the event, was set up quickly after the Giant Slalom. Snow had started to fall and it was very difficult to see the start so instead of the usual flag waving, the start and finish officials had to communicate by radio. The teams are seeded on the results of the first run of Giant Slalom so the early rounds went quickly with not too

many surprises. As the quarter finals and semi-finals approached things were getting much closer and to speed up things the racers were towed up to the start behind a skidoo. There were many screams and laughs but for some this was the most exciting part of the event! The final was a closely fought battle between Kandahar and Strathallan, with the latter winning by a short head. The DHO were knocked out by the Kandahar in the third round.

Tuesday was slightly warmer. The race started just after 9am and again the standard was very good. Heavy snow fell consistently and the pisteurs had to work very hard to keep the race track safe, with instructors and coaches sliding the course after every few racers. The tables were turned this time, with Charlotte beating Emily by a very small margin. Anna Henderson (Kandahar) was the best of the children 2 girls in fourth place overall while Alexandra Lillywhite (Woodbridge) was the best in children 1. Sarah was the best of the DHO girls finishing fourth in her age group and she was followed by Sophie Stammers, Sophie Lismore - again second in children 1 - and Lucy.

Sarah Adams

Sofia Dale

The Kandahar were again the best team with the DHO girls in 7th and Sophie Stammers’ Millfield 8th.

The combined was won by Emily, with Charlotte second and Thomasine Nilson-Wrede (Reeds) third. Honor was the best of the children 2 girls in 4th place overall, closely followed by Anna and Alice Taylor (St Mary’s) all in the top ten. Katya was the best in Children 1 with Alexandra second and Sophie Lismore third, just ahead of Sophie Stammers and Poppy. Sarah and Lucy finished just behind them. Not surprisingly, the Kandahar were the best team, ahead of Strathallan and Reeds. The

DHO finished 8th and Sophie Stammers’ Millfield were 9th.

Sophie Lismore is to be congratulated on getting on the podium in all three categories, whilst Poppy managed it twice – best unregistered racer in the Giant Slalom and 2nd in the combined.

The races were organised by the Ladies’ Ski Club and, in addition to the DHO, were sponsored by Basecamp, BASI, Beauty Store, Incline Sports, Kandahar, Meritz of Chichester, MPI/MTGY, Nimrod Capital, SCGB and Ski Bartlett.

Racing & Trainingingrid Christophersen

Another year, another article, a few more wrinkles, but all positive on the Racing and Training front. New this year was our trip to Landgraaf in May, the 500 metre long indoor snow slope in Holland, for a real BASS-pointed race. I long for the day when the DHO-generated Snoasis in Suffolk will come to fruition (go to www.snoasis.co.uk) £250 million anyone and it is yours!!

The other camps followed in quick succession – Summer Training on the Hintertux Glacier, October on the Mölltal Glacier, BARSC Championships in Champoluc before Christmas, Christmas and New Year in Wengen, which included the hugely popular all-comers flood-lit parallel slalom on the nursery slopes – over 100 entrants and statistics ably provided by our House Father Graham Crouch - the quite excellent English Championships in Bormio in February and the British Championships in Meribel at Easter. And in-between Anglo Scottish races in Les Houches, Schoolboys races in Meiringen,The Welsh, Aiglon Cup, the Interschools, the Scottish Championships. There is no longer a start or an end to the season, it is a continuous circus and no let-up in the summer with R&T meetings, BARSC meetings and Skiers Trust Meetings.

Highlights there were plenty of and mostly in the shape of new, permanent and excellent trainers. For me to relax, know that the train-ers are doing their job, that they will organise fitness and ski- tuning after skiing without me having to hassle them is a huge bonus. Ben Porter is an ex-trainee – he bothered me for some time to allow him to come and train and I succumbed to his pestering. What a windfall! Hard working, supremely conscientious and pro-active, he epitomises all that is good and honest in a trainer. Add to the mix Kenny from Scotland and Natasha from Poland, who could wish for more? Long may they stay and long may they continue to want to spend their skiing time with DHO trainees. My cup runneth over.

Jud Rabey is 12 and has been with us for a couple of years. He is a sturdy lad as you can surmise from the picture. Jud needed to get his points down in order to qualify for the British Championships and his only chance was the Scottish Championships in Courchevel immediately before the start of the British. Ever an optimist, this time, however, I thought gravity was against us! Come the day of the slalom in Courchevel.Who is that skiing down the course; I did not know Tomba or Killy or the Hermanator where competing in the Scottish. This chap

There was real and genuine improvement all around, and as the new Performance Director of British Ski and Snowsport, Paddy Mortimer, is trying to tell us: there is negative correlation between success in senior years and training intensity in childhood; there is no systematic correlation between early competitive success and success as a senior. In other words, let us

above all enjoy our skiing, enjoy the competition, but let us not write ourselves off because we do not succeed as Children or Juniors. Inevitably children who spend the winters in the Alps will beat us initially, but there is no basis for thinking we will not catch them up and even overtake them. Courage mes enfantes, we are en route and nothing will stop us.

Amateur inter Club Championships Gstaad 2012, liz Moore

This year The Eagles Ski Club from Gstaad hosted the 5th AICC. The event is becoming increasingly popular with clubs from all over Europe while racing standards are reaching new heights. With this in mind, we DHO wannabe racers decided we needed more race training before the event and so Vroni Famiglietti, Ercole’s wife, tried to turn us into hard core racers in all of 3 days! Vroni is the most amazing racer herself and a great coach and even if some of us never quite succeeded in becoming star performers we at least knew what we should be doing!

The DHO sent 4 teams to Gstaad, consisting of the following members.

Diana Mathias, Lucy Nelson, Sarah Hirst Malin, Vroni Famiglietti, Sina Cova, Sally Ireland, Liz Moore,Mary Laure Eby, Richard Hackett, Martin West, Robert Goodwin, Jean Daniel Gluck, Martin Yates, Robin James, Tony Davis and Max Davies.

Diana Mathias and Lucy Nelson were trainees together in their teens. Diana, who came over from Vail, USA and Lucy from UK, reminisced about those freezing training days on Salzegg - nothing changes! Sarah, who had never raced before, is now

completely hooked while the rest of the teams had already been won over and now all the more so under Vroni’s tuition! However, I am not 100% sure about our president but we are working on this! Perhaps it should become a pre-requisite for all DHO presidents to participate in race training?! Anyway, thank you so much all those who raced and I do hope you found it

enjoyable and will participate again!

We left Wengen on Friday 9th using a hired bus and private cars. Mike Oldham, Sandy Ommanney, Lizzie Davis and Penny Goodwin came along as supporters with Mike driving the bus to and from Gstaad. Well beyond the call of duty and much appreciated so thank you Mike.

We were given an excellent dinner at the Gstaad Yacht Club that evening with so much to eat and drink that I was beginning to think it was a plan by the Eagles Ski Club to handicap the opposition! However, we all raced on Saturday doing two runs of a GS and managed to walk away with a gold medal for the fastest 60+ male awarded to Jean Daniel Gluck, 2 silver individual medals, 60 + women for Liz Moore and 45+ women for Vroni Famiglietti as well as a silver for women overall to Vroni! Also silver team medals for 60+ women involving Sina Cova, Sally Ireland, Mary Laure Eby and Liz Moore, as well as 60+ men represented by Jean Daniel Gluck, Richard Hackett, Robert Goodwin and Martin West. I thought a pretty good result all things considered!

In the evening, we were guests of the Eagles at a Gala dinner in their amazing Club Room, the Eagles Nest, located at the top of the Wassernergrat ski lift which they also own! It was a beautiful day and in a stun-ning setting . Some skied down afterwards whilst others took the chair lift enjoying the spectacular view of Gstaad by night.

It was a harmonious and fun event and we hope next year, when the event will be hosted by SAS in Zermatt, we can encourage even more DHO members to participate. Please do get in touch with me at [email protected] or on +41 79 421 3194 if you wish to join in the fun . We will have some race training at Christmas and again just before the Races which take place over the weekend of 9/10 March. You can visit the DHO website for more information and photos!

Until next season...

Fredy today

Switzerland has several world renowned sporting events each year. Such as the Golf Tournament in Crans Montana, Athletics in Zurich, Show Jumping and many other sports. All take place in or adjacent to major centres of population - with one major exception. The International Lauberhorn Ski Race, its only genuine international rival in prestige terms being the Hahnenkamm in Austria.

The Lauberhorn is Switzerland’s largest sports event, with 38,000 visitors on the Saturday and a total of 66,000 over the weekend, which is the maximum the railway can currently transport up and down the mountain in the time available.

It is an incredibly impressive record for a small village of a mere 1,100 inhabitants. Of course it doesn’t just happen, there is a team of people who work tirelessly for the Lauberhorn Ski Race Organising Committee. And they, most certainly, do make it happen.

One such member of the Organising Committee is Honorary DHO member, Fredy Fuchs. He has just retired from his position of Vice President of the OK (Organising Committee) after 42 years.

The Lauberhorn’s “father” was Ernst Gertsch and his race is now the oldest race on the international calendar. The first race was in 1930. Despite a belief in some quarters that Ernst was indestructible, it was clear that by 1970 a succession needed to be created. And this was where Fredy came in.

Born and bred in Wengen, Fredy was a very good skier and racer (although he modestly suggests he was “only second rank”). He progressed from being a member of the

Fredy with Field Marshal Montgomery

Wengen Schoolboys team competing in the Montgomery Cup (a team-race run annually) and Fredy is here shown receiving his winners medal from Field Marshal Viscount Montgomery at the Montgomery Cup in 1954.

By 1960 Fredy was attempting to qualify for the Swiss Team to go to the Squaw Valley Olympics (at this time he was regarded as a natural member of the Swiss 2nd team) when he had an accident which sidelined him and as he says, this was the luckiest accident because it forced him to pursue another career.

His new career took him into the railway, joining the WAB as an Engineering Apprentice and as well as working all day, he attended to his engineering qualifications at night school and each Saturday. By the time he was 27 years old, he was appointed head of Winter Sports for the whole area. And it was in this capacity that most of us came in contact with him at his office up at Kleine Scheidegg. As a consequence he was a vital cog in the works of running the Lauberhorn from getting equipment up the mountain, ensuring the pistes and race tracks were all prepared and getting competitors and spectators up and down the mountain as efficiently as possible.

Fredy joined Ernst Gertsch on the Lauberhorn Organising Committee and spent 5 years with him before Ernst was succeeded by his son Viktor. At which point, Fredy and Viktor became vice President and President respectively of the OK for the following 42 years. And this year after the Lauberorn race, Fredy finally retired from the OK. As the younger of the two, his colleague Viktor will remain for another 2 years as President.

Fredy remains a goodwill Ambassador for the Lauberhorn race, a race which is as successful, popular and prestigious as it is, in no small part due to his efforts.

British Ski and Snowboard is a newly formed federation to undertake the responsibility of running all UK skiing and snowboarding. The DHO has a vote in the running of BSS, the size of that vote is proportional

to the number of DHO members who join the BSS. Once we have 200 members, our vote is at its maximum.

Your club needs you to join British Ski and Snowboard. The new ski federation has been set up and now the ski clubs such as the DHO are the share holders/stakeholders. But our vote will only count if we have DHO members who have joined BSS. We need 200 members to have real influence within the Federation and to help our young trainees reach

international standard. Go to www.teambss.org.uk

Tim Ashburner is a longstanding and highly respected member of the DHO. He joined the club in 1954, he raced internationally, he was a pretty good ski jumper too, and he has written the definitive book on the history of ski jumping. He has a Gold DHO badge, a Gold Racing Arrow and the Club Skiing Award. In addition he was, back in the “dark ages”, the editor of the DHO Journal.

So when he writes that there is something wrong in the ski world mainly to do with the fact that there is no overall publicity vehicle such as used to exist from 1920 to 1971, then called the British Ski Year Book, we should, perhaps, listen. We may not entirely agree with his solution, but there is no doubt that he has identified a major problem with the administration of the competition side of our sport. If this precipitates correspondence and discussion for future Journals, all well and good. We look forward to the hornet’s nest he may have stirred up.

His letter follows:

I am anxious to see the re-establishment of a National body to take charge of organising National Ski Championships and select and manage National teams.

By the time the 2012 Journal appears it will be two years since our last such body, Snowsports GB was wound up after sponsorship and Government funding melted

away. This was the body which had taken over administration of all disciplines: Alpine, Nordic, Biathlon, Freestyle etc from the British Ski Federation which had replaced the fallen National Ski Federation originally set up in 1964.

During the few years it had in overall charge, Snowsports GB never produced any Journal to tell the skiing world what was going on, British Land generously and loyally sponsored our National Alpine Championships at Tignes for some years without getting more than desultory summaries in the press which mentioned only the names of the winners. The SCGB’s publication “Ski and Board” which appears 3 times annually, barely mentions these championships either.

So how is this huge void in publicity to be filled? The older generation will remember with admiration the “British Ski Year Book” edited by Arnold (later Sir Arnold) Lunn from 1920 to 1971 on behalf of the SCGB and the Alpine Ski Club. Its demise was mourned throughout the skiing world. It was as if Wisden itself had ceased publicationand the followers of cricket had no more journal of record.

If a Year Book cannot be produced at present, an inexpensive answer might be for the DHO Journal, the Kandahar Review, and Ski and Board to devote two pages to National Championships both senior andJunior, once these are restarted, and to the

more important FIS and Olympic events when we are represented. I hope others who read this will have better ideas. The attractive Scottish Ski Club Journal produces extensive summaries of downhill and slalom races up north. To be a true Year Book, however, it should also include reports on the huge growth of Scottish Nordic skiing. There are now many Scottish ski clubs, and there is, for instance, a very healthy rivalry between the Huntly Nordic Club and the Cairngorm Biathlon and Nordic club. Like the DHO, these clubs all have their own web sites, but surely nothing compares with a “coffee table” journal to bring everyone together.

I read that over a million Brits now ski regularly. Most are Alpine skiers, but I am reminded of the spectacular growth in the numbers taking up cross country skiing when Pippa Middleton, famous for providing the Rear View of the year as chief bridesmaid to her sister to her sister the Duchess of Cambridge at last year’s Royal Wedding, safely completed the 56 mile Vassaloppet from Salem to Mora in Sweden on 4th March this year in a most creditable time of 7 hrs 13 minutes. She and her brother James, who also finished, had just two weeks of training, and there were many other Brits in the field of 15,800.

With all good wishes

Coronation Day To one particular 10 year old boy on the morning of Tuesday June 2nd 1953, the day promised to be quite exciting. It was the day of the Coronation, there were to be street parties, army parades and RAF fly pasts and about half the occupants of the road were shortly to gather round one little 12 inch black and white TV in the local doctor’s house. Best of all, there was also a few more days off school.

At breakfast that morning, the Daily Express headline had said “All this - and Everest too”. Because, 3 days earlier (it took 3 days for the news to get back to the UK), Edmund Hillary and Sherpa Tenzing Norgay became the first people to climb the world’s highest mountain.

Curiosity drove this 10 year old boy to read the same news in several papers. He was a very proficient tree climber himself, so climbing mountains seemed somehow related. Most of these reports mentioned that no sign had been found of George Mallory and Andrew Irvine, a pair of British climbers who had disappeared very near to the top of Everest 29 years earlier.

That 10 year old was me, and the local doctor was my father. I asked him who were Mallory and Irvine. “Oh, two British climbers who were lost on Everest manyyears ago” he said. “Lost?” said I, not yet

it was the day of the Coronation, there were to be street parties, army parades and RAF fly pasts and about half the occupants of the road were shortly to gather round one little

realising that in this context “lost” meant they had died. I thought this meant that they had merely lost their way. Further questions indicated my father knew no more. But much to his and my surprise, my mother knew lots more.

She had grown up in the then fairly smart, middle class, professional suburb of Birkenhead called Prenton and her father

was a successful Liverpool businessman. She had been 14 when Mallory and Irvine were lost, and not only was it regarded as a national disaster, it was an even bigger local disaster because both climbers were from the North West. Mallory was a vicar’s son, born in Mobberley in Cheshire, but when he died on Everest, his father was now based in Birkenhead. Irvine, however, had actually lived and grown up in Birkenhead’s Prenton

area just like my mother. And Irvine‘s father too, was a successful Liverpool businessman. Both fathers would journey to the Birkenhead Pier head each day and take the ferry across to Liverpool (it would be another 10 years before the Mersey Tunnel opened to offer an alternative way across the river). It is highly probable the two fathers were acquainted with each other. Irvine was an undergraduate at Merton College Oxford and was only 22 years old when he died.

Irvine was already a bit of local hero because he had been in the winning Oxford boat race crew the previous year and like any other 14 year old girl from his home town, my mother felt his tragic death very personally. After the event, she had read everything available about Mallory and Irvine and devoured all the reports of the memorial services in Liverpool and London, plus the various stories and theories about their disappearance that had been published in the national and local newspapers. Years later in 1999, when Mallory’s body was eventually found on Everest, a rash of books appeared and she even read one or two of these some 75 years after the two men were lost. So it should come as no surprise that, to me too, Irvine was a bit of a hero and that when his biography was written by his great niece Julie Summers and published in the year 2000, I should buy myself a copy.

The undergraduate oarsman Whilst up at Oxford University, Sandy Irvine was in the University eight that lost to Cambridge in the Boat Race in 1922, but they won in 1923. Sandy had joined a Merton College expedition to the Isle of Spitzbergen in 1923, led by geologist and explorer Noel Odell. He had enjoyed the challenge and had impressed Odell.

Odell was invited to join the 1924 Everest expedition and he encouraged Sandy to apply to do likewise. Sandy was eventually invited to join on the basis that he might become their “secret weapon”. He was young, fit, immensely strong and had an excellent mechanical aptitude which would

prove valuable on the mountain when fixing the unreliable oxygen apparatus or mending cameras and camp beds! Odell suggested Sandy should get some “Snow Experience” and thus he introduced him to his friend Arnold Lunn , who was building his power base in Mürren as the world leader in developing alpine skiing and racing.

He was shortly to launch the Kandahar Ski Club, he was an avid ski mountaineer and had many years earlier been an excellent pure mountaineer before a fall on Cader Idris in North Wales in 1908 so badly broke his right leg that it never fully recovered and was thereafter 1.5 inches shorter than his left leg. He would be surrounded by his ski-racing friends for Christmas and New Year and most of January. Irvine joined the Lunn party, sitting at table with Arnold and family that included Peter Lunn, then aged 9.

Undoubtedly Sandy took to skiing like a duck to water. So it was not altogether surprising that, as a fellow Oxford undergraduate with a significant sporting reputation, albeit still a bit of a skiing novice, he should talk with and befriend other Oxford undergraduates ski racing at Mürren. As part of Sandy’s trip to Mürren, towards the end of his visit, an expedition was planned onto the glaciers from Jungfraujoch. This trip was organised by CJ White, almost certainly in response to a direct request from Arnold Lunn. CJ White was to become the first president of the DHO on its formation 13 months later.

CJ (as he was universally known) was one of the pre-eminent tourers of the day and was Wengen based, as was local guide, Fritz Fuchs. The plan was to ski down the Aletsch glacier, climb on skis up to the Hollandia Hut, where they were to stay the night, and the following day they were scheduled to climb Ebnefluh to give Sandy his “Snow Experience”, thence to the saddle at Lötschenlücke and down the other side to the isolated village of Blatten.

Due to bad weather the Ebnefluh climb was abandoned and they stayed a few extra hours asleep in their beds in the Hollandia hut. This expedition, whilst primarily organised for Sandy Irvine to increase his snowexperience, was also joined by ski racing exponents from Mürren, Chris Mackintosh,

Antony Knebworth and John Carleton, who were all Oxford University ski racers. Whilst we do not know whether Sandy had previously met or knew Chris (or vice versa), both were “Oxford Blues”, Sandy for Rowing and Chris for both Athletics and Rugby, there is little doubt that even if they had not met (they were, after all, at different Oxford Colleges), they must certainly have been aware of each other’s prowess in their chosen sporting fields.

The 4 of them came across from Mürren to Wengen and up to Scheidegg on the way to Jungfraujoch, they joined CJ White and ski guide Fritz Fuchs. In a letter to his father, Antony Knebworth recounts how the racers were not greatly impressed with their first exposure to glacier touring, they disliked having to slavishly follow the guide’s tracks and were uncertain and nervous about the increased likelihood or danger of falling into a crevasse if they strayed off-course. The speed of their progress was rather too pedestrian for their taste. He also recounted how they all got completely legless in the bar at the little Edelweiss hotel in Blatten for 2 Swiss Francs drinking Vin du Pays and a home distilled schnapps called Enzian, made from the roots of Gentians. They then tried to ski down to Goppenstein, with the utmost difficulty and very frequent rather drunken falls.

The Cardboard box In September 2011 I was delving into a recently discovered cardboard box containing early records of the DHO.

The contents included a complete set of DHO journals, both an early DHO minute book and a later one (but still pre-war). Also it contained a photo album dating from about 1920 onwards. The minute book turned out to be the very first minute book of the DHO and included the handwritten records of the founding of the club on 7th February 1925. It even contains one of the original hand drawn DHO badges used on that first race day on 6th February, the day before the club was officially formed.

In the photo album are annotated photos of virtually every person who was important in the founding and development of the DHO, from CJ White (our first President), Ken Foster (the first vice President and first editor, later president too), SF Fisken (who had earlier coined two notable phrases, that he indulged in “railway mountaineering” and skied “Downhill Only” and thus he should be credited with inventing, perhaps unwittingly, our club’s name).

Near the front of the album is a photograph of a group of 6 skiers; 5 are identified, one is not, in that lovely old fashioned white ink often used in old photo albums. The names are John Carleton, Viscount Knebworth, blank, Chris Mackintosh, CJ White, Fritz Fuchs. The photo was captioned “The Expedition”.

Because I knew the story outlined earlier and knew the composition of the trip involving Irvine, I immediately wondered whether this could be that expedition from Jungfraujoch to Blatten? Almost willing myself to decide that whatever he looked like, this unidentified skier just had to be Sandy Irvine, I looked carefully. What I saw was a large and very athletic looking man who made Chris Mackintosh look surprisingly normal in size. And yes, the unmistakable face of Sandy Irvine.

History has not overburdened us with too many photos of Sandy Irvine before the Everest expedition. Whilst Sandy was known because of his boat race success, he only became world famous as “….and Irvine” when connected to Mallory after they had both died. Mallory was strongly associated with Everest in the public eye even before going on his 3rd and final expedition. So to find a previously unknown 88 year old photograph of Irvine before he went to Everest is quite exciting.

Let us finish with a few words from his biographer (and great niece) Julie Summers to whom I conveyed the news of the photograph’s discovery. “How incredibly exciting and what a find. I’d be absolutely delighted to see any photograph of Sandy from this collection……….. I’m really thrilled”.

Did they achieve the summit of Everest? The 1924 Everest expedition has been much discussed by climbers, authors and researchers over the last 88 years. The central theme is always “Did they summit or not before they died?”

Many would prefer not to know. Mallory’s body was found in 1999, but Sandy Irvine’s has not yet been discovered. Or, at least, not recorded as “found”. All attempts before 1939 were undertaken through Tibet so the natural route was up the north col and thence

either the north east ridge or the couloir. Mallory was known to favour the ridge route (and it was on that ridge where they were last seen), Norton and Somervell who had failed a few days earlier, had tried the Couloir route.

When the Chinese annexed Tibet after the war, access to Everest via this side was denied to western countries, so expeditions thereafter all attempted from the west side of Everest through Nepal. Only the Chinese and their allies approached from the north. As the previously difficult relations have eased and access to the northern side re-opened to expeditions from the western world, it has become clear that in the meantime Chinese climbers had seen two

The two photographs taken at Jungfraujoch show Sandy Irvine, one posed in a line of 6 skiers, and next moving off over the knife edge carrying his skis, following Fritz Fuchs onto the Aletsch glacier. And around his neck is his camera, proving, if such proof is needed, that his camera went with him everywhere. And he had clearly used it at Jungfraujoch since in the earlier photo it is not visible and is presumably inside his jacket.

Above; Irvine’s camera can be seen around his neck. Is it possible that images from this may have survived to this day, assuming he took it on his final climb?

bodies on the NE upper slopes of Everest and there were only two candidates as to who these might be. They were both much too high to be regarded as recoverable, so were left where they were. One was seen at a height that more or less coincides with the location of Mallory’s body when found in 1999, the other was reportedly seen several hundred feet higher up the mountain, very close to the ridge itself. Mallory and Irvine were known to have the expedition’s Kodak Vest Pocket camera with them as well as almost certainly Sandy Irvine’s own camera.Yet no camera was found on or near to George Mallory.

So, one or both cameras were more likely to be with Sandy Irvine. If they had summited in daylight, or established a new “high point” before turning back, it is reasonable toassume they would have recorded theirsuccess on film, thus the continued fascination as to the exact whereabouts of Sandy’s body. At that height the mountain is permanently in “deepfreeze” and therefore there is a very reasonable chance that images may be still on the film that would be capable of being developed. Eastman Kodak has stated that it believes this film will still be capable of producing valid negatives even after 88 years in “deepfreeze”.

When Irvine’s body is eventually found, will it have one or two cameras thereon, and will either of them contain undeveloped film that proves that they either did or didn’t reach the summit? Perhaps I can express a personal view that I know coincides with that of Julie Summers, Irvine’s biographer. I would much prefer not to know. To me part of the fascination of this 88 year old story is not knowing the actual outcome, but being able to hope that, perhaps, just perhaps, they made it.

Volcanic Skiing Phil Smith

If someone had said to me I would be standing on the top of a live Volcano looking down into the centre of the earth with bubbling lava one minute and then skiing off piste in perfect snow the next I would have thought they were crazy. Yet here I was doing exactly that. Chile is a country of startling contrasts, which on average is over 2,700 miles long, the equivalent distance from Edinburgh to Baghdad and never more then 150 miles wide with some of the most active volcanoes in the world.

I first started my adventures in Chile ten years ago when I was lucky to meet a good friend Cristian Levy. Cristian runs his own Chilean tourism agency based in Temuco in the centre of the Lakes and Volcano district. I was familiar with Valle Nevado and Portillo, the main Chilean ski destinations but Cristian persuaded me there is a totally different side to skiing in Chile. Corralco, Araucarias, Pucon, Huilo-Huilo, Antillanca and Osorno are ski areas very few skiers have ever heard of, so when I took my first group there 10 years ago needless to say I was pretty apprehensive. We’re used to The 3 Valleys and the Espace Killy with hundreds of ski lifts stretching in every direction.

Here we were traveling half way around the world to ski in resorts with only one or two ski lifts! You have to be joking I thought. Nervous was an understatement. I had persuaded some of my guests to take three weeks off work and part with a fare chunk of their income to ski in a resort with two lifts! My worries were totally unfounded, this was a totally different type of ski experience. The scenery spectacular, the hospitality overwhelming, the skiing totally different and the opportunity to ski from the top of live volcanoes!

Every year we have added to and amended the itinerary and shaped it into the ultimate Chilean skiing experience designed for skiers from limited or no off piste experience to off piste experts. But each year as I traveled around the lure of the volcanoes was overwhelming. I had always managed to get to the top of one or two within our itinerary but volcano skiing is addictive and I wanted more! So I sat down with Cristian and Guido, our local Guide, and drew up the ultimate volcano itinerary. Climb and ski off the top of 7 Volcanoes in 12 days!

So here were ‘The 7 Volcanoes’. Antuco, Lonquimay, Villarrica, Mocho, Choshuenco, Casablanca and Osorno.

If you think one volcano is the same as another, think again. Every one is different. Different shapes, scenery, summits and dif-ferent history. Lonquimay, our second desti-nation, last erupted around the early 90’s and left a new massive crater half way up the original volcano. Our first visit to Lonquimay was six years ago and I have since fallen in love with the place. Jose, the local volcano specialist and governor of the local school is always on hand to welcome us.

We stay in a lodge at the base of the volcano surrounded by araucarias trees and I am not exaggerating when I say we have the place to ourselves. So I was worried about only having two ski lifts! Lonquimay only has one main lift! But when you’re faced with untracked powder, no other skiers and a chairlift to yourself! Need I say more? The climb to the summit is pretty tough for those with no experience but for hardened ski tourers 4 hours will get you to the top and onto the massive crater. The ski down is always exceptional snow as it’s south facing. Don’t forget we’re in the southern hemisphere so it’s the other way around. There are numerous ways down but the best is straight down the south face.

Next to Villarrica. This is one of the most famous volcanoes in Chile and last erupted around 2000. We have managed to get most of our clients to the top of this, even non-ski tourers. With the skis strapped to your backpack you can get to the top between 3 to 5 hours. The scenery from the top is spectacular and as the crater is open so you can literally see the lava spitting out. You cannot fail to be mesmerized with molten lava on one side and perfect snow on the other! There are numerous routes down and if you get the timing just right you can be skiing down in the sunset.

Onto the national park of Huilo-Huilo and volcanoes Mocho and Choshuenco. Up to this point you could easily be forgiven if you have thought it cannot get any better. But Huilo-Huilo is the most amazing place I have ever been to. Again we have the mountain to ourselves, private trucks to take us through the national park to the base of the volcano and our own snow cat to get us as high aspossible. Huilo-Huilo has no ski lifts! Yep you heard right, no lifts. But who needs lifts when you have your own private snow cat. From where the snow cat drops us it’s only a short one hour hike to the top of each volcano and from there the whole area to yourself.

Drop down south and onto our last two volcanoes. Casablanca is a ski resort with

4 ski lifts so this is big and crowded! I must have counted at least 20 other skiers! This was a totally different experience and again the drive up, the scenery and the skiing spectacular. The hike to the top of the volcano takes between 3 to 4 hours and even for non-hardened ski tourers is easy. The skiing down is awesome and again just pick your route and enjoy.

Last of the 7 volcanoes and one of the most spectacular, Osorno. Driving along the valley Osorno looms high and ominous and there is no escaping its glare! Guido was right when he said he left the best to last. We arrived at the base early and again we had the ski resort

to ourselves. The skin up took 4 hours but this was different to the others as 300 metres from the summit the slope angle changes from 30 to 50 degrees. The last section has to be negotiated with crampons and ice axes. The ski down was spectacular and as we arrived at the bottom for some hard earned cerveza’s you could not help thinking that skiing would never be the same again. The land of volcanoes had us hooked.

Val d’Anniviers and Crans – MontanaA party of sixteen members joined our guides on March 17th for 4 days touring in Val d’Anniviers and then 2 days across the Rhône valley based in the Wildstrubelhütte above Crans – Montana.

The tour group was larger than in recent years. Adolf Schlunegger was again the mainstay in putting the tour together as he has done for 26 years. Peter Sollberger guided the higher climbers and both were assisted by René Seiler who may have carried some of the members when it was tough. The tour members were Ian and Jane McCormick, Ali Hollington, Clive Mitchell, Ian Murray, Ian Carmichael, John Rigby, John Wright, Kit and Simon Erhardt, Luis Cumberlege, Pippa Duncan, Roger and Helen Marsh, Simon Hollington and Trisha Dale. It was also a pleasure to see Paddy Hollington, matriarch of the Hollingtons and also of the DHO spring tour, at several of our morning starts. I was persuaded to report the tour based on the established criteria of being a newly joined member and probably the first person on the tour to fall.

The first four days of the tour were based in the high and pretty Val d’Anniviers containing the old resorts of St Luc, Grimentz and Zinal. We stayed in Zinal at the Hotel Le Besso where the rooms were small but comfortable, the food was good and the atmosphere friendly.

Sunday 18th MarchThe weather was sunny with high cloud for most of the day. Later visibility deteriorated and snow fall started.

We split into 3 groups:Group 1 high climbers guided by Peter.

Group 2 René’s gentlemen who recovered in spite of a mix-up of each other’s skis after lunch.

Group 3 the ladies guided by AdolfWe skied mainly in Zinal, in two bowls with hardish crud at the top and wet spring snow conditions lower down. Lunch in the Sorbois restaurant. Afterwards a steep couloir descent in crud / spring snow and a final descent to Grimentz.

Monday 19th March The snow continued overnight and much of the day giving about 25 cms. As planned we travelled by car to St. Luc, but Adolf abandoned the scheduled climb in favour of a memorable day of resort skiing in fresh snow, some of it between the trees. The Hollingtons are local residents in Grimentz and Pippa joined René’s group of gentlemen to provide invaluable knowledge of the pistes in the poor visibility. We were all again impressed with our guides’ abilities to find the way through the trees and to lifts in areas where they had never skied. During the day there was a “human slalom”. Most of the “poles” were of significant age and they were not bendy poles. It was good fun but we do not recommend it to the club to defray the cost of slalom poles.

Tuesday 20th March A beautiful day with the fresh snow. We went by car to Grimentz, up in the lifts to Becs de Bosson and split ourselves to form Adolf’s tourers and Peter’s high climbers. The tourers did a half-hour climb, a ski on good snow followed by an hour climb to Col de Lona (2780m) for packed lunch. The descent down to Lac de Moiry and its impressive dam became progressively more challenging with crusty snow, avalanche debris and finally a narrow path through the trees. Peter’s group made the first tracks down Col de Louche into Val de Réchy, and then climbed to Cabane des Becs de Bosson for a brief recovery and drink break (no time for lunch). Afterwards they skied beside Lac de Lona to reach the tracks left by Adolf’s group up to Col de Lona and extended the climb to ski the next untracked bowl. The way back to Grimentz was similar for both groups and we met for drinks in the Crystal bar.

wednesday 21st MarchThe morning comprised a walk/climb from Zinal towards L’Ar Pitetta. It was another beautiful day and our aim was to enjoy the walk and the superb mountain scenery of the upper Val d’Anniviers. Because of time constraint we turned back before reaching our goal and skied back to Zinal for lunch. In the afternoon we transferred to Crans Montana by car followed by two long cable car lifts to the Plaine Morte glacier. After admiring the view over the Rhône Valley we did a short descent and then a climb to the Weisshorn summit (2948m) and a further short descent in challenging crusty crud to the Wildstrubelhütte (2793m). Unlike most of our team I had not previously stayed in a mountain hut. Both the dormitories and the wash rooms were for both genders. There was a lot of tooth brushing but my washing in the cold water was very limited! A pair of light trousers or leggings is useful: my jeans would not go in my pack so I stayed in salopettes.

A torch is useful if you get up at night although this hut had mains electricity which is unusual. The food was simple but substantial and sustaining and served in a convivial dining area. Also staying the first night were a couple of beautiful German shepherd dogs which slept in the boot room and were quite at home on the snow. A fox was eating scraps on the metal verandah in the morning.

Thursday 22nd March The third sunny day. As usual when staying in huts, breakfast was early at 6am and departure at 7.10am. Both groups climbed from the hut to the Plaine Morte glacier but then split to cross the glacier in slightly different directions. Adolf’s group climbed Les Faverges (2971m) for a wonderful view of the Rhône valley. They then had a shortish descent back to glacier level which they re-crossed in the other direction before climbing the Weisshorn again and descending to the hut. Peter’s group climbed Schneehorn (3177 m) then skied in the Outannes to Aminona. At the top they had breaking crust, but then a kilometre of spring snow turning to slush at the bottom. The Violettes cable car hadrecently broken and they were initially told

they could not get back to the hut. However, after consulting a local ski instructor they took alternative lifts to complete a typical DHO touring day including variable conditions and a modicum of adversity.

Friday 23rd March After thanking the wardens Margreth and Heinz we posed outside the hut for team photographs and left at 8 am. Peter’s group climbed Pointe de Plaine Morte did a short descent in crud and then climbed Mont Bonvin (2900m). They were rewarded with a memorable descent, the first part in powder and then spring snow ending up down a woodland path to Aminona. Adolf’s group (now augmented by some defections from the faster team!) took advantage of a brief button lift ascent to near the top of the Plaine Morte ski terrain, then headed off piste for a similar descent through powder, spring snow and woodland tracks on the eastern side of the resort. A feature of touring which impressed me and benefited my skiing was the necessity to ski several types of snow, often on the same descent, and being unable to avoid the difficult bits. Both groups met up for drinks at Mayen de la Cure restaurantbefore returning by shuttle bus to Montana and departure.

I think all team members enjoyed the tour and on behalf of them I thank Adolf, René and Peter for their guiding and Ian for his (light touch!) organisation work.

Ski equipment over the years ingie Christophersen

When I was a little girl growing up in Norway and skied to school every day my skis were made of a laminate of maple, birch and hickory. I caught the trikk – the little electric tram – back up the mountain at the end of the day. The skis were long, very long, and had Kandahar bindings – these could be adjusted from a downhill skiing position to a walking position. The cable round the heel would be channelled through a catch on either side of the ski thereby tightening the binding. In walking mode the cable was unhooked thus freeing the heel from the ski. Metal edges were screwed on in sections; a stone might rip a section off – sometimes stripping off the entire metal edge and with it part of the ski.

Boots were made of leather; the poles were of bamboo with rather large baskets. I wore red stockings and plus- fours – we used to call them apple plus-fours because you could stuff a pound of apples into them, around the knee area. In Norwegian eple knickers. Height of fashion.

Then the new-fangled plastic skis arrived and with them primitive safety binding. My father was not only quite ambitious regarding my skiing – I had become Oslo champion at the age of 14 – but he was also

very generous and a very memorable day in my childhood was being taken to the shop of the brothers Ruud (pronounced Rude) and bought a pair of red Clipper skis with Marker safety bindings- I was way ahead of my compatriots. (The Ruud brothers were world famous ski-jumpers. Birger Ruud was a pre-war triple Olympic gold medallist and literally soared above the rest. In the 1936 Olympics he won the ski jumping and downhill gold medal – a Nordic and an Alpine event during the same Olympics, never repeated since. I have always been told that the downhill course swept round a large rock or outcrop and Birger jumped the rock, thus cutting out a large section of the course, but nevertheless completed the course legally as he passed through all the gates! Clever! ) At the same time my father bought himself a pair of Head skis – they were in those days the Rolls-Royce of skis and cost the staggering sum of NOK 1000 or £80.

I have lived through laminated skis, all wood, then plastic base, skis in the form of a sandwich of aluminium and wood, metal, fibreglass, and foam core; leather boots, buckle leather boots, then plastic boots; bindings that were just that – binding, release bindings; stoppers.

There were initially no equipment rules in Alpine ski racing – the top ski racers influenced the manufacturers, rather than the other way round. I think I am right to say that stoppers became the first compulsory equipment – if a ski could be parted from the skier it was vital to prevent it from shoot-ing down the hill out of control. In 1959 there was a fatal accident during an Alpine downhill competition and FIS decreed that helmets were obligatory for downhill. I called them sausage helmets- foam sausages covered in leather. They would of course protect the head from bruises and scratches but would be useless if a head and a rock made contact at speed. A far cry from today’s kite-marked reinforced plastic helmets.

We now ski on exaggerated side-cut skis – it is possible to turn cleanly at great speed and equally as possible to rip the knee cap clean out of the socket. The pendulum swings back and forth – from an absolute minimum length of 165 cm and starting this season, FIS rules now decree longer skis with less side-cut thus reducing the radius the ski can describe on the snow. Not so spectacular but a lot safer, or rather, less damaging to knees and tendons.

Ski racing is a controlled competition – very different to the affairs I entered every-week

in 1895 the norwegian Fridtjof nansen made his second journey towards the north Pole on skis

made of maple, birch and hickory

end in Oslo. Our gate-poles were mostly cut from the nearby wood and painted red, blue or yellow. There were no real guidelines or standards regarding how to set a course, distance between two gates of the same colour or succeeding gates. You might enter a tight vertical from a fast schuss, or turn your skis uphill and execute a few herring-bone steps to pass round the next gate. Timing was a hit and miss affair, a couple of stop-watches and line of sight control, a whistle in case of fog! Compare that to today’s compulsory electronic time-keeping equipment to 1/1000th of a second, backed up by a second system and sophisticated hand timing in the last instance if it all fails. There are rules for vertical drop, distance between gates, number of gates, gate panels, and the pole itself must comply with strict specifications such as minimum and maximum diameter. All competition courses are homologated, i.e. inspected and passed by a FIS inspector, and speed courses must be re-homologated every 10 years, just in case new buildings or trees have appeared along the course constituting a danger to the racer.

Then we have the complicated seed points – in my day non-existent and every name was drawn out of a hat every race, no top 30 followed by FIS points order. Seed points govern a racer’s starting position and as we all know, the lower the bib number the better the condition of the course. The object of the exercise is to have as few points as possible! Seed points on the BASS (British Alpine Seeding System) list are calculated from the average of a skier’s two best results of the season.

Every racer earns race points, international FIS points or British BASS points. These points indicate his or her performance in relation to the winner; the closer to the winner in time, the lower the points.

Added to these race points is the so-called penalty. Penalty points are worked out by a formula which takes the standard of the race into account; i.e. who raced, and how good the top 10 finishers were (or, in other words, how good were their points). The better, or lower, the seed points of the winner, the better, or lower the race Penalty Points.

The race points added to the penalty points make up the seed points. The lower the seed points, the better the start number.

Then we have what I call the Fiddle factor, or the F factor. Don’t continue reading if this does not interest you! And now I quote Peter Heath who is the British National Seeder.

The values for each discipline are reviewed every two years following an analysis of all FIS results within the last two years.

For each Giant Slalom race, they calculate the average time behind the winner for all finishers as a percentage of the winner’s time, then average the percentages over all the GS races within the two year period. Finally, they set the F value so that this average time produces 60 race points.

For downhill, the average time is about 4.5% behind the winner - so F = 60/4.5% = 1333

For slalom, the average time is about 10% behind the winner - so F = 60/10% = 600Presumably, the need to negotiate poles and deep ruts influence this.

For many years, the combined result (downhill & slalom) was based on the sum of the race points from each race. Without differential F values, a good slalom, but mediocre downhill skier has an advantage over a good downhill, but mediocre slalom skier. The differential F values are set to give the racer with the average time in each discipline 60 race points for each race.

Unfortunately, using the race point calculation meant that it was not possible to know the winner of the combined until everyone had completed the second race and the race points had been calculated. Not very friendly to the TV commentator trying to report live to the world.

The combined result is now calculated on the aggregate time from both disciplines - effectively removing the influence of the F value. It seems that an instant result is now more important than equating the different disciplines.

Easy Peasy when you understand it!! Parents, and all DHO members, there is wonderful information to be had from the FIS website www.fis-ski.com Go and have a look and start speaking with real authority to anyone who will bother to listen!

The Shackelton Traverse South Georgia, october 2011, Janey King

Ten people decked in full ski-mountain-eering gear complete with loaded sledges is not a common sight on any beach, although the elephant seals languishing in the sand barely lifted their heads as we trudged by. The five-day yacht passage that brought us to this remote bay isn’t quite the usual start to a ski tour either - but then this was something more than a weekend in the Alps.

We were on the island of South Georgia, and our objective was to follow in the footsteps of Sir Ernest Shackleton and two of his men who made the first traverse of the island in May 1916, crossing the hostile peaks and glaciers of the unmapped interior to bring rescue to their stranded companions. Shackleton’s ship the Endurance left England in August 1914. Amundsen with Scott pressing hard behind him had already reached the Pole, and Scott’s party had perished on the terrible return journey. Shackleton therefore persuaded his sponsors that the last remaining great polar challenge was the trans-Antarctic crossing – an 1800-mile march across the ice. The expedition was adequately planned and equipped, but the Antarctic weather was against the Endurance crew from the very beginning. In the polar summer of 1914-15 there were 53 degrees of frost. Their ship became

trapped in the pack ice, drifted helplessly in its grinding jaws through three long polar seasons, and finally broke up and sank.

Taking with them their beloved sledge dogs, the three lifeboats and whatever else they could salvage including the carpenter’s cat, the men camped out on the floes and drifted steadily onwards towards the edge of the pack. By April 1916 the ice was breaking up beneath them and they were in grave danger from cruising killer whales as well as the constant storms. They took to the lifeboats and sailed sixty miles to the nearest land – but not to safety. Remote Elephant Island was unvisited even by whalers, and there was no hope of discovery and rescue from such an isolated spot.

Shackleton took the decision to sail one of the three lifeboats to the nearest inhabited point and fetch help for his stranded crew. He chose five men to accompany him, including the Endurance’s skipper Frank Worsley and Tom Crean, the second officer. On April 24th they set out in the 22-foot lifeboat James Caird to sail through mountainous seas to South Georgia, a speck of land almost 800 miles distant.

The perils of this journey were infinite. Yet they made it after an agonising voyage of

sixteen days, and were finally driven ashore in heavy weather on to the south-west coast of South Georgia. But only the island’s north-east coast was inhabited. In a last bid to save his men Shackleton had to make one more decision. He would have to lead the climb over unmapped, icebound mountains to reach the whaling station on the other side of the island. He chose Worsley and Crean to accompany him, and leaving the other three men behind they set off from where we stood on the beach at Peggotty Bluff in King Haakon Bay. Exactly the same view confronted us – rock, ice, unmarked snow, and a distant col now known as Shackleton Gap.

Our party of eight was made up of a group of seven friends who had pre-planned this adventure in great detail. Sailors as well as expert skiers, five of them doctors who trained together, they hospitably recruited me – a writer, Wengen skier and occasional mountaineer – to join them. Training outings to north Wales and Chamonix had been not without their own excitements, and the high-seas drama of the Southern Ocean passage from Falkland to South Georgia had welded us into a proper team. We sailed out of Stanley on Skip Novak’s Pelagic Australis, a fantastic 74-foot metal-hulled high latitudes charter yacht designed to support

expeditions like ours (sailors can read all the details on www.pelagic.co.uk). As Skip said, ‘if you’re not doing the washing up it’s a cruise. If you are, it’s an expedition’. We washed up. He was also accompanying us on the traverse and we were led by the mountaineer Stephen Venables, the first Briton to climb Everest without oxygen.

It had been a long journey, but we were finally ready for the off. In three separate ropes for glacier travel we clipped the sledges (pulks) to our harnesses via traces and stepped into our touring skis. My heart was banging like a drum, but the steady and familiar rhythm of uphill skinning soon settled my nerves. The loaded pulk swished through the snow more easily than I had expected. As we climbed steadily towards the col I thought of Shackleton, Worsley and Crean. We had our parkas and Gore-tex, our GPS and satphone and avalanche bleeps, ropes and shovels and polar tents, our self-rescue gear merrily clinking on our harnesses, and enough food for a siege. They had – what? After weeks in an open boat they had little more than rags to wear, boots with a few screws taken from the lifeboat planking, and some pitiful scraps of food.

Pelagic dwindled to a dot in the steel-blue bay. The skipper and mate would bring her round to meet us at Stromness, the old whaling station on the other side – how many days hence?

Shackleton and co. did this journey in thirty-six hours.

From the top of the Gap we headed eastwards across the open space of the Murray Snowfield. I felt pretty chipper, swinging along in the middle of our rope with Skip setting a manageable pace and Christopher moving easily at the rear. This was going to be easy, I decided. Ha ha.

We stopped for lunch in rising wind. Thin grey cloud had already shawled the sky and without sunlight the scenery became hostile. I made the hideous mistake of briefly lowering my harness and trousers without bothering to unfasten the pulk traces, or my rucksack straps, or the prusik knot securing the pulk to the rope. I pulled my stufftogether too hastily afterwards and stepped

the wrong way. The other ropes were already moving off into the white murk. My harness was twisted, the rope was round my leg, everything was in a nightmare tangle. Skip was nose into the wind like a gun dog. I lurched in his wake. The pulk fishtailed exhaustingly on knotted traces. I struggled on, against a desperate crosswind. The snow was scoured to pearly ice, nasty and featureless. My skins kept slipping sideways instead of gliding forwards, but Skip pulled ahead so I was tugged in two directions. By now the wind was blasting in huge snowy gusts. My face stung. Suddenly a massive gust came (‘Fifty plus’, the men said later) and lifted me right off my feet. I was dumped on my side in a cats’ cradle of rope. It’s hard to get upright with crossed skis and a cumbersome rucksack, let alone from under a red plastic sledge on an incline of sheet ice.

The second time it happened I very nearly laid my head on the ice to weep. But luckily – and no doubt accurately – I judged that this wasn’t the moment for waterworks. We trudged on, and after a stiff ascent in the howling wind at last reached our first overnight camp in a snow scoop under the forbidding Trident Ridge.

There was no chance to sag or even catch our breath. It was still blowing a massive hooley. We went straight into digging out and flattening three tent platforms. Following bellowed but barely audible instructions from our leaders we fought to put up three tents with double poles for security in the maddeningly flimsy net sleeves. The domes bucked and leapt to escape from our numbed fists and the flysheets twisted like dragons’ wings.

We dug out blocks of snow to weight the valances. We secured guy ropes with ice axes or snow stakes or skis dug into the snow. We dug deep foot-pits in the porch areas front and back. We dragged off our ski boots, crawled out of the wind at last and contemplated the dry-bags we had each hauled in off the pulks, containing our sleeping gear, dry socks, a mug and spoon. A foam mat apiece, a thin thermarest mattress on top of that, and a sleeping bag. In our tent, Christopher and I collapsed on our sketchy beds as if felled by a blow. The process of putting up camp had taken two hours, and it was getting dark. Skip sat with his feet in the kitchen pit and fired up a gas burner balanced on a sheet of plywood board. Hot tea came, followed by tomato and onion pasta and a nightcap of hot chocolate with a nip of Christopher’s whisky. Seconds later I was asleep.

Next morning following a 4 a.m. wake-up it took two and a half hours to strike camp and get ready to move. After the short climb to the ridge itself, we were faced with the task of lowering ten heavy pulks down three climbing ropes tied together to make a 180m length – down not one but three separate stages, making a total drop-off of well over 500m down to the Crean Glacier. This massive task took seven hours. Stephen, Skip and Tom (another Everest veteran) bore the brunt of the technical rope work, but we all worked flat out wherever we could. One of us missed his footing at the top of the ridge and slid the whole way down. By some

miracle he was only bruised and grazed, but this was the worst moment. By the time we were all down and had gulped some food it was 3pm, and there were still 12 km to cover to our planned overnight camp. I don’t think I was the only one who felt beat, and relieved when Stephen called a stop for the night. There was a good deal of anxiety about our seriously exposed position in the middle of the glacier. The nightly satphone schedule with the boat informed us that colossal gales were forecast. But there was nothing else for it.

In the event the winds were not too bad. We even had a lie-in – until a luxurious 6 a.m. We skinned across the remaining expanse of the Crean, made a gentle climb to the division from the Fortuna Glacier, then skied in glorious sunshine down to our next camp in another snow scoop sheltered beneath rocks below Breakwind Ridge – our posi-tion, as I noted in my scribbled diary, 37 deg 52 min W, 54 deg 10 min S.

The next morning, our fourth, we reached the top of Breakwind Ridge via a short climb up the headwall using crampons and ice axes, to the narrow rock ridge itself, then lowered the pulks down to the Fortuna Glacier. From here we had a view to our left of the blue slice of Fortuna Bay, and in the distance another bluff with a distinctive Z-shaped band of pale rock. Shackleton knew that this stood above Stromness Harbour. It was fromthis spot at 7 a.m. on a May morning in 1916 that he heard the distant toot of the whaling

station’s whistle, and knew that he was in striking distance of human habitation. I was in my hero’s exact footprints. In almost 100 years few people have stepped in that place, and it was a moment to reflect on his courage and strength.

We skied onwards over spring snow in wonderful sunshine, descending all the time until we reached a steep and narrowing gully through which a river funneled towards the sea. It was hard going on touring skis, let alone towing an unwieldy pulk. At last we gained the beach at Fortuna Bay, and camped for the night amongst the seals and penguins.

We spent the next day and the following night tent-bound, trapped by gales and torrential rain. Christopher, Skip and I lay in our sleeping bags reading, dozing, listening to iPods, eking out our food, and talking. It felt very companionable and safe, with the wind outside battering the nylon walls and the low hiss of the gas burner inside as we brewed more tea.

(Q. How did you go?A. We used pee bottles inside the tents rather than trying to pull on ski boots and totter out into the howling storm. I added the refinement of knotting an anorak around my waist to form a curtain. Solid operations did require a dash outside, to the pit and shovel. That’s all on that topic).

On the sixth day we completed the last, easier, segment of the journey known as the

Shackleton Walk. We skinned up from Fortuna Bay, crossed over some rounded cols, and made a ski descent on heavy snow to the last couple of miles of walking over boggy tussock grass to the shore of Stromness Bay and the ruined whaling station. Here the unrecognisable scarecrows of the Endurance men stumbled up to the manager’s house, and one of them said ‘My name is Shackleton’. Today we saw Pelagic, riding the waves in the bay – the most welcome sight in the world. When we came to the beach Miles the skipper zipped over in the dinghy with a bottle of champagne. Skip popped the bottle cork with one slash of my K2 ski and we drank an exultant toast to the Shackleton Traverse. It had been a great adventure.

The tour as a whole was both harder and longer and more demanding than I’d expected – not technically difficult in itself,

but put together it was the toughest physical challenge I’ve ever experienced – but also more exciting, more satisfying and more complete than any other ski mountaineering excursion. The history is so vivid, so all around you. The scenery is staggeringly wild. And the savage weather means that you are continually rocking on the sharp edge of potential disaster – without any prospect of external rescue. Unlike in the Alps, or even the Himalayas, the cavalry is not going to arrive in a helicopter to winch you off. There was no time, fortunately, to reflect on this while it was all happening. I did think about it afterwards, with a small shudder. But I am also almost certain that whatever had befallen us, led by Stephen and Skip we would have found a way to deal with it. And there were more shared moments of triumph or commiseration with my companions than I can list. The team spirit was the best thing about our adventure – a word of muttered

encouragement, the almost constant jokes, and the unfailing good humour.

At one point one of the others noticed I was struggling on foot down the gully, silently took my skis from me and tied them to his pulk alongside his own. He was already hauling twice my load. It was a very Polar Hero act. We might almost have gone so far as to shake hands. Wordlessly, of course.

Sir Ernest Shackleton, Frank Worsley and Tom Crean – we salute you.

The hills are alive with the sound of.....building (but not anymore!)

Robert Stewart

Back in March this year, the Swiss electorate voted for an initiative to restrict the number of second homes in Switzerland in each commune or municipality to no more than 20%. The reasoning behind the change is not to keep out foreign buyers, 60% of second home owners in Switzerland are Swiss, but more about restricting the proliferation of secondary residences in tourist locations, particularly in The Alps. There are over half a million second homes in Switzerland, equivalent to approximately 12 % of the overall housing stock and in the alpine cantons of Valais, Grison and Ticino the proportion of second homes is between 60 and 80%.

So why Stop building new Chalets? The Swiss constitution includes a legal mandate that ensures appropriate and economical land use throughout every region. But this was not the driving force

behind the voters’ decision. The vast majority mentioned conservation and protection of mountain landscapes but it’s also a matter of low occupation rates within second homes that remain empty for all but a few weeks a year.

The government is not particularly in support of this new law because economically it will have an impact on the tourist industry. Once the law is implemented and becomes statute, some expect that prices in Alpine resort locations will start to rise. Jeremy Rollason, Managing Director of Alpine homes at Savills said in a statement, ‘one thing is certain and that is that the number of land development opportunities for second homes in Switzerland will dry up in the next 12 to 24 months. Consequently, we would urge any investors of new build or off plan property to act sooner rather than later.’ But not everyone thinks it’s as simple as that, the Swiss government themselves are not entirely sure what impact the new legislation will have on property prices and think it’s a difficult one to judge.

Cold beds What is certain is that within a region that already exceeds the 20% quota, if a planning application for a second home was submitted before March 11 2012, then it can only be used as such if there are certain guarantees in place. All second homes will have to be managed intensively as high-occupancy tourist accommodation. This means filling the beds throughout both summer and winter seasons to match the kind of occupancy you might find in the hotel industry. So because most alpine resorts already exceed the 20% limit, this means second home occupancy would have to rise by more than double in many cases. The term ‘Cold Beds’ is used to describe the empty, non-occupied rooms that proliferate alpine resorts, if any building project plan was not submitted before the cut-off date of March 11 then the law will prevent these beds from being unoccupied for any length of time.

There are still some uncertainties about what the situation is regarding existing second homes in regions where they already exceedthe 20% ceiling. Will those properties be

Recent changes in the Swiss property law might have an important impact on many second home

owners in Alpine resorts

Page 64: DHOjournal - Downhill Only Ski Club...bc D & R Group 53 Da Sina-Sina’s Pub 19 Dho Merchandise 64 Emily holt/Roosi huus 36 Flindall Apartment 8 history of Ski Jumping 14 hotel Caprice

able to sell as second homes in the future? This is still not clear and will depend on further decisions the Swiss government is yet to make. One interesting thought is how second homes have developed over the decades, especially in the Swiss Alps. There are many Swiss citizens who live down in the valleys and the cities who own second homes up in the mountains, will they be able to sell their property or even rent it out in years to come? No-one seems to be able to answer this question in full.

I caught up with Isabelle Hefti from the Verbier St-Bernard tourist office in the Swiss canton of Valais. Verbier already far exceeds the maximum quota for second homes and is well above the 20% limit that has been imposed, but it’s not such a black and white situation there. Isabelle pointed out that for many years, Verbier have instigated strict laws against building property that is not suitable for the surrounding environment, she goes onto say, ‘In Verbier and the rest of the region, we really care for the landscape, this is our most important treasure. Many local people also have their second homeclose to where they live. It is part of our history and culture. Many of the people that

62•DHOJournal•2012

voted in this referendum are city dwellers, and whilst their intentions were good, they maybe did not realise the full implications of this law’. Those implications may directly impact on the local workforce and open up many answered questions about the future of apartment and chalet rentals in the Alps. Maybe the positive aspect of all this is to accelerate the discussions on this highly important subject.

I asked Isabelle what she thought personally about how the law will affect property rental in Verbier and elsewhere in Swiss ski resorts, she said, ‘we don’t really know yet how this law will be applied; a national commission is working on the subject. Maybe people will like to invent other solutions, like sharing property with other owners; it could be a good alternative’.

Holiday swapping clubs like www.snowswappers.com will be able to take advantage of the changes as they allow members to exchange their second homes with each other, both increasing theoccupancy rate and providing them with a chance to explore other resorts.

The neighbours are at it

For anyone that owns property in neighbouring France, the recent news about changes in tax laws there could send a shiver through any non-resident property owner. The rise from 20% to 35.5% in tax on rental income from applicable properties has been back dated to January 1, ensuring totally unexpected bills for any rental income accrued. For anyone from outside the EU that owns French property, the situation is even worse, with tax rising to 48.8%, and if you simply want to sell up and walk away then there’s bad news too. Brand new capital gains tax laws now state you must own a property for more than 30 years, as opposed to the previous 15, to be exempt from CGT, one alternative, become a French citizen and avoid the new tax when selling up!

obituary: Peter Lunn CMG OBE born: 15 november 1914 Died: 13th november 2011

Peter Lunn may have been a founder member of the Kandahar in 1924 with whom he was always automatically associated, but he also joined the DHO in 1963 and was thus a member of the DHO for 49 years, not a bad innings for any member.

Three things were paramount in Peter Lunn’s life, religion, skiing and his work for MI6.A convert to Catholicism in 1933, like his father, he was a regular church goer. He used to spend each winter in Mürren, walking up the slopes if the lifts did not run. About his work for M16 he never spoke having given an oath of secrecy when he joined the service. The only things known to his friends were those published by other people. When George Blake was discovered to be a Russian spy, the Russians said that Peter Lunn was Britain’s best counter espionage agent. Later other people, notably Americans, wrote books about counter espionage which showed him to have organised the tapping of Russian lines under Vienna and Berlin but Lunn himself never wrote or referred to his work. He was awarded the OBE in 1951 and the CMG in 1957.

As son of Britain’s ski pioneer, Sir Arnold Lunn, Peter Lunn was put on skis shortly before his second birthday and was still racing after his 90th birthday. When Arnold Lunn was employing a nanny in Grindelwald for his children he chose the best skier rather than the best child minder in the village. Brought up mostly in the Alps, Peter Lunn, even as a child, took part in ski races at

Mürren in the Bernese Oberland, often beating competitors several times his age.

When his father founded the Kandahar Ski Club to promote downhill ski racing, Peter, aged 10, was upstairs in bed but was told next morning that he had been made a founder member of the club. From 1978-1984 he was elected President.

When just 21, at the 1936 Winter Olympics at Garmisch Partenkirchen – the first Olympics to include Downhill and Slalom racing - Peter Lunn captained the British team. He admitted that he was too worried about his responsibilities to do well in those races himself but he came 9th in the World Alpine Ski Championships later that year. He took a fast and accurate line on a steep, narrow and icy downhill track lined with tree stumps, down which many of the international racers fell.

In 1939 he married the Hon Antoinette Preston, daughter of Viscount Gormanston. She and two of their six children predeceased him. When war stopped all ski racing, Peter Lunn served in the Army and spent some months in Malta while it was heavily bombed and the island earned the George Cross for its bravery. Lunn wrote an article comparing the feelings of a downhill racer before competing, with the feelings of one suffering heavy bombardment. He wrote several books, including the “Guinness Book of Skiing”, which gives an admirable history of skiing as well as a broad view of the sport. He also wrote for the Ski

Club of Great Britain’s magazine, on the history of skiing, ski technique and the different qualities of snow. On the latter subject he could speak from experience for he preferred above all to ski off piste, where a knowledge of powder, ice and breakable crust were essential to enjoyment. He would often ski in areas where it would have been dangerous without a knowledge of what causes avalanches. He sometimes had to restrict these off piste explorations because those who were less expert would follow his tracks and put themselves in danger.

In 1985 a dangerous driver crashed into his car and he was told that it was unlikely he would walk again, let alone ski. Patiently he took exercise until able to ski again. He continued to spend each winter in Mürren. And when in Britain for the summer months he kept fit by waterskiing. On his 90th birthday, in November 2004 he waterskied in spite of the weather, in order to prepare for the Inferno race two months later.

In January 2005 his family as a 90th birthday present made up a Lunn team for the Inferno race at Mürren a test which scares over 1,000 people every year. Despite blizzard conditions which prevented the full course being used and included a very testing uphill section, Peter Lunn finished the race in good time with children and grandchildren.

He wore his beliefs lightly and without the least hint of disregard for those whose beliefs differed or failed to match the integrity of his own.EAH

obituary: Sarah Brindley Alken born: 15 August 1965 Died: 11 December 2011

Sarah Brindley’s first glimpse of Wengen was at Christmas 1970 when Elsa Cova welcomed her at the doors of the Hotel Falken where the older members of the family had enjoyed their Winter Wonderland over the previous few years.

It wasn’t long before Sarah was encouraged to join the Coggins and she spent many happy years under the watchful eye of her namesake Sarah Myles who was Honorary Coggins Secretary in those days.

As Sarah Brindley grew a little older she began to feature in the competitive side of affairs and, after some fairly serious training, she scored a double in 1976 when winning

the Obstacle Race and the Giant Slalom over the Bumps Course.

Sarah also showed considerable enthusiasm on the curling rink and was a member of victorious Irish team which won the Nations Trophy sponsored by the Hotel Falken in 1985.

Some years later her future husband Gregory Alken came on the scene and they were married at the family’s Co. Meath home in July 1999. Sarah and Greg have three children Sophie, Jennifer and Conor all of whom joined the D.H.O in 2009.

Last December Sarah passed away after a long illness which she bore with great

patience and wonderful courage. It was her final wish that the family would continue to enjoy the happiness which Wengen and all her friends in the village and in the D.H.O had provided over the best part of fifty yearsBB

obituary: Adrian Smith born: March 1959 Died: June 2011

I was really shocked to hear the sad news that Adrian had died suddenly in June last year, especially as he was only 52, I just couldn’t believe it. I had only just got back in touch with him after several years and we were talking of skiing together again. I first met Adrian in Wengen back in 1983 when he became a member of the DHO.

He was a great chum, very keen skier and racer; he only ever skied in a straight line! He won the McMillan cup at least twice if not more, I can’t remember now and manyother DHO cups too. He was also awarded a DHO Silver Badge, Bronze Racing Arrow and Club Skiing Award. He racedin the DHO Inferno team for many yearsand earned a few bronze medals along the way. I have lots of fond memories of our skiing days together; we always booked Tino to take us for a few private lessons just to get the old ski legs going not because we couldn’t ski! And he certainly put us through our paces!

Adrian was a creature of habit, he always stayed at the Regina Hotel with Guido and Arianne which was just as well really as a friend of his called Robert also stayed there. He came to Adrian’s rescue one year I remember. I got a call from Adrian he said “there isn’t much snow in Wengen so I have booked for us to go to Vail instead”. I said “but what about your girlfriend who is coming out while we are meant to be there”.

“Oh don’t worry about her I have arranged for Robert to look after her”. Typical Adrian he lived for his skiing and skiing always came first.

I remember the famous ‘pots and pans’ parties at the Falken Hotel with the late Andreas Cova, Big John and many others we all had far too much to drink and lots of laughs wearing half the chefs cooking pots and pans on our heads. I am sure lots of people thought we were mad. Sadly I lost touch with Adrian after he stopped skiing inWengen however I will always have good

memories of the fun we had together both on and off the piste and the enthusiasm he had for the sport.

Along with his brother Christopher, Nelson was a race trainee in 1991. He was also a keen skateboarder and this gave rise to a natural conversion to snowboarding in the fullness of time. Thereafter he deserted skiing to concentrate on Freestyle snow-boarding at which he became so good he was regarded as something of an icon. The magazine “Whitelines” is the bible of free-style riders and we are greatly indebted to Ed Blomfield, the editor of Whitelines who sent us the following:

It feels surreal to be writing this, but Nelson Pratt – one of the most talented and popular snowboarders in the UK – has died.

I first met “Nelly” in Tignes, during the winter of 1997/98. He and I had both just left school and were embarking on our first season in the Alps, working for Crystal Holidays. While I was scrubbing toilets in a chalet, Nelson and his new best pal Marcus Chapman were mastering the art of dish pigging in the bowels of the Curling Hotel.

Until that December, Nelson had only enjoyed about eight weeks on snow, but he was already pretty handy on a skateboard and took to snowboarding like the proverbial duck. He had a relaxed style and managedto make any trick look simple. Although

he returned home and enrolled at uni the following year, the call of the mountains proved too strong and he rejoined our gang in Tignes early in the 1998/99 season, where we enjoyed one of the most epic powder winters on record.

For a long time, he was that seasonaire mate you always thought deserved to be sponsored but who had somehow failed to be spotted. The truth is he was just too shy and polite a chap to go hassling for free kit, and he was always really in it for the love. Soon enough, however, word got out of his ability, and Nelson became one of the most respected riders in the UK scene, enjoying a long partnership with K2 snowboards.

Beyond the riding, Nelson was quite simply one of the nicest guys I have ever met in my life. People always say things like that after a death of course, but in Nelly’s case I honestly don’t know anyone that didn’t love him to bits. How could you not? He was friendly, funny, loyal and above all humble. While he now rode with the elite, he never forgot his original seasonaire buddies; therejust was not an arrogant bone in his body. Years later, when I got this job at Whitelines, I was lucky enough to hook up with Nelsonon magazine trips to Kashmir, Mt Baker and Canada, and he remained as smiley and

positive as ever.

Nelson’s grounded perspective perhaps came from his upbringing on an arable farm in Hampshire. He hated technology (famously rocking a trusty brick of a mobile phone) and seemed profoundly connected to nature. Indeed he was only truly at home outdoors, where he could spend his immense physical energy digging jumps or helping his family with the harvest. Nelson was a man with giant strength, a giant appetite and a giant heart. A true gentleman.

Recently, Nelson had been passing on his knowledge to other riders through his work with the Army and the British Snowboard Team. His technical ability and natural charm made him the ideal coach. He will be sorely missed by everyone he touched in the snowboard community, but most of all by his family back in Hampshire. Our thoughts go out to them at this tragic time.

EB

We would like to extend the DHO’s condolences to Nelson’s parents Edith and Nigel and his brother Christopher, all three are DHO members.

obituary: Nelson Pratt born: 1979 Died: July 2012

Nelson came from a longstanding family of DHO members, his grandmother was Joan Shearing - a British champion and a racer of note in the 50s - and a long time DHO rep. His mother was Edith Pratt (nee Shearing), a race trainee and racer earning a Racing Arrow.

obituary: Helen Carmichael born: 1928 Died: 2011

Helen Carmichael was born in Glasgow in 1928 and was part of the dynamic climbing/skiing group of young Glaswegians who moved to the Highlands enmasse in the 1960s and put Glencoe and Aviemore on the map. Helen climbed the Matterhorn when she was 19 years old, the only lady amongst 10 guys. It was amongst such fellow adventurers that she met her husband Alex (nicknamed Hoagy) Carmichael.

Ros Hepworth spotted the Carmichael children in the 1970s and wee Helen, Evelyn and Stephen were all DHO trainees.

Ros made Helen Racing and Training house-mother, a position she kept for many years. It was for her unstinting work in this position that brought about her being elected an Honorary Member of the DHO. During the season she was employed by the Scottish Ski Club to run their club hut in the Cairngorms and I can see Helen now, a large rucksack on her back, carrying a bag in each hand, making her way across the White Lady to the SSC hut where she served food and hot drinks and generally looked after the club members. She was much loved.
