Today’s festivities have been chosen to introduce students to the many diverse cultures found in our local and global com-munities. In addition to contributions from Danville High School faculty, staff, and students, we are fortunate to have guests with roots in dozens of different cultures. We hope that you will enjoy the presentations, information booths, music performances, and oppor-tunities to learn about a variety of different languages, cultural art forms, and global issues.

Language and Cultural Immersion Rooms 5:00 am - 6:00 pm SessionsImmersion Room 1: Introduction to the Swahili LanguageBeth Ann Williams - PhD Student (UIUC)The Awesome Swahili immersion room will teach you everything you need to impress your friends and family with your language skills. We will learn proper greetings (to save you from social embarrassment on your next trip to East Africa), explore Hip Hop Swahili music, and figure out what is real Swahili and what is gibberish in The Lion King (truth: it’s mostly gibberish). Please come with one or two sentences you want to know how to say in Swahili so we can translate them together.

*Immersion Room 2: Introduction to the Portuguese Language Raquel Goebel - Professor of Portuguese Instructor (UIUC)Basic information about the history, geographic distribution, and grammar of Portuguese will be the focus of this immersion room. Students will have the opportunity to learn basic Portuguese phrases and strategies for studying the language independently.

*Immersion Room 3: Irish Dancing Workshop Ms. Yohnka (DHS Teacher) Welcome to the wonderful world of Irish Dancing! Come and learn all about the traditional dance of Ireland from one of DHS’s own teachers, Mrs. Yohnka. Music, fun, and exercise are bound to occur while learning about the traditional Irish Jig and Reel! No experience is necessary to participate in this awesome immersion room.

*Immersion Room 4: Diverse Cultures and Languages of India Amir Abdul-Rahim and Hadi Mohammed (DHS Students)DHS Students Amir and Hadi will discuss the incredible cultural and linguistic diversity of the Indian Subcontinent.

*Immersion Room 5: Indian Mandala Drawing WorkshopArthi Krishna (University of Chicago Student, 2014 DHS Graduate)The Indian Mandala immersion room will introduce students to the basics of creat-ing a Mandala, a popular Hindu and Buddhist art form. The lesson will focus briefly on the background and cultural significance of these drawings (the Sanskrit origin, the religious/cultural meaning, interpretation, etc.). Students will then learn how to create their own mandala outline based off of circular geometry, and they will then be shown how to fill the pattern with different designs to create an intricate work. Students will be provided with examples, and a list of possible patterns to take home and continue practicing the art.

International Festival Booths

Brazilian Capoeira Workshops (1:00 pm - 2:00 pm) - The Capoeira Angola Center of Illinois will introduce students to the history, basic movements and music of Capoeira Angola. The 60-minute lesson will teach the students origin of Capoeira Angola , and how it is an art of resistance. We will then demonstrate basic Capoeira Angola movements that incorporate dance, kicks and basic acro-batic movements. The movements will be practiced individually and with partner sequences. To finish, we will demonstrate the percussion instruments used in Capoeira and teach some basic songs that are sang in Portuguese.

*Soran Bushi Workshops (4:00 pm - 6:00 pm) - Soran Bushi is often times called the “Fisherman Dance”. It originated from Hokkaido, the northernmost island of Japan, and is currently taught in Japanese elementary schools as well as performed competitively. In this interactive student workshop, we will be per-forming Soran Bushi followed by a simple dance lesson of the core dance moves of Soran Bushi.

*Scientific Animators Without Borders - SAWBO transforms information on relevant topics such as agriculture, disease and women’s empowerment, into ani-mations, which are then voice overlaid into a diversity of languages from around the world - Ben Blalock and Susan Balfe (SAWBO Research Specialists)

*Chinese Calligraphy - Calligraphy is the traditional art of writing Chinese characters. Chinese teacher will write students’ name in Chinese and teach them some basic Chinese Characters. - Weizhi Yan (Confucius Institute at UIUC) and Chinese Studies Forum (UIUC Student Group)

*Famous Scientists - Can you identify famous international scientists and their accomplishments? - Ms. Fitzgerald (DHS Teacher)

*Nepal Booth – Learn about Nepalese culture, language, and people – Anush and Shreeti Adhikari (Former DHS Students)

*Quebec Booth - Learn about Quebec and its French background with posters on the Cirque du Soleil and Carnaval (Mardi Gras) and identification of animals of Quebec - Mrs. Schofield and French classes (DHS Teacher and students)

*New Guinea/African Instruments - East Park students have studied New Guinea and African instruments and will share their information and display - Ms. Campbell and students (East Park Elementary School Class)

4:00 pm - 5:00 pm Sessions Immersion Room 1: Introduction to the Hindi Language Dr. Mishra - Hindi Professor and Ms. Chaitra Prasad - T.A. (UIUC)The Hindi immersion room will introduce students to the basics of the Hindi spoken and written language. The 50-minute lesson will focus on basic phrases and expressions of Hindi to illustrate the main features of language and culture in India. Students will learn about the geographic distribution of the Hindi language, how it is related to other languages in South Asia. Students will be provided with a list of Online resources from which they can continue to study Hindi independently.

*Immersion Room 2: Introduction to the Quechua Language Dr. Soto - Professor of Quechua (UIUC)Learn Quechua, the language of the Inkas. We will offer the student some basic information about the language itself as its geographic location, the number of speakers, its status among the other original languages of the Americas, and about the its user, the Quechua-speaking community. They will also have the opportunity to learn and use a sample of grammar including some vocabulary, morphology and syntax of the language.

*Immersion Room 3: Kimono: Rigidity and Flexibility in Japanese Arts and Culture - Jennifer Gunji-Ballsrund - Japan House Director (UIUC)This workshop will demonstrate the way in which the kimono expresses Japanese culture, both rigid and flexible. Participants will learn about the kimono, view examples and watch someone being dressed in kimono.

The workshop will be taught using an oral tradition system called Maguru Panggul, which is the time-honored method of Balinese Gamelan music pedagogy. The literal meaning is “teaching [or learning] through the mallet” so no prior experience reading musical notation is necessary.

*Immersion Room 3: Cultural Diversity in East Asia - Panel Discussion-Japan House Staff (UIUC)Join us for a panel discussion exploring differences and similarities of East Asian countries and its cultures. Japan House interns representing the Jap-anese, Chinese, Vietnamese and Korean cultures will contrast their cultures regarding practices such as food, dress and holidays.

11:40 am - 12:40 pm SessionsImmersion Room 1: Korean Poetry Workshop Duane Johanson - Center for East Asian and Pacific Studies (UIUC)The sijo is a classic form of Korean poetry with three (or six) lines and about 45 total syllables. As such, it is very easy to learn. Sijo can be humorous or serious and always include a little “twist” at the end. Participants will learn the struc-ture of the sijo and will conclude by writing their own poems.

*Immersion Room 2: Skype Conversation with students from Hitra, Norway Oddbjørn Larsen - Teacher at Hitra High SchoolStudents at Hitra High School will answer questions presented by Danville High School Students and discuss the education system, popular culture, and socila issues in Norwegian society.

*Immersion Room 4: Introduction to the Persian Language Dr. Aazam Feiz - Professor of Persian (UIUC) The Persian immersion room will introduce the history of Persian language, its writing system, and the difference between “Persian” & “Farsi”. The students will practice and learn vocabularies, phrases and simple sentences using verb “to be” in present tense. They will also learn about aspects of Persian culture.

*Orchestra Room: Indonesian Gamelan WorkshopKetut Gede Asnawa - Professor of Musicology (UIUC)This workshop is designed to study the nature of Balinese Gamelan music by exploring its unique characteristics. Language and Cultural Immersion Rooms 1:15 pm - 2:05 pm SessionsImmersion Room 1: Introduction to the Arabic Language Dr. Eman Saadah - Professor of Arabic (UIUC) Come learn and have fun with us! The Arabic immersion room will introduce students to the basics of the Arabic language, both spoken and written. During the 50-minute lesson, students will learn where Arabic is spoken, by whom, and why Arabic is an important language in today’s world! Students will also be immersed in the Arabic culture through listening to music and learning about the most popular sport in the Arab world. Students will discuss how knowledge of Arabic is instrumental in fostering deeper understanding between the peoples of the world and strengthening cultural exchanges between the East and West.

*Immersion Room 2: Skype Conversation with Students Studying in TurkeyCash Kiser and Dylan Pichon (2012 DHS Graduates)The student-exchange Skype session will feature two former Danville High School students Cash Kiser and Dylan Pichon who are studying abroad in Ankara, Turkey for a semester. The 50 minute Skype session will help students understand the cultural differences and adjustments, including Cash and Dylan’s own personal experiences, that one will endure while studying abroad and many perks that come along with it.

Immersion Room 4: Scientific Animators Without Borders Presentation Laura Steele - Researcher (UIUC)The Scientific Animations Without Borders (SAWBO) room will introduce students to a University of Illinois at Urbana-Champaign based extension program that aims to share knowledge through animation across the globe. SAWBO transforms extension information on relevant topics such as agriculture, health and women’s empowerment, into 2D, 2.5D and 3D animations, which are then voice overlaid into a diversity of languages from around the world. All SAWBO animations are made freely available to anyone wishing to use them for educational purposes and animations can be used on cell phones, computers, tablets, TVs, and overhead projection systems.
