Thorney and Ehm pen Christmas fundraiserThe Einstein Brothers' label, known to bephilanthropic in its outlook toward the lessfortunate, is front -ending another holidaygiving project. The vehicle for the funding ofthis year's soup kitchen and clothing giveawayis a song, Xmas Lives In Fairy Tales, writtenspecially for the occasion of giving atChristmas time. The track was released onSony compilation No. 38. Although radio playis expected to be fairly heavy, performanceroyalties won't be paid for some time, makingit necessary to dip into their own coffers forthis year's expenditure of the homeless project.

Einstein's Tim Thorney and Erica Ehm,had written the song for a movie, ChristmasOn Division Street. "It was a hot day in themiddle of summer," Thorney recalls, "whenErica (Ehm) and I started to write the song. Isaid 'let's write this for the movie, but keep inmind that we could also use it to do some goodaround Christmas' ."

As it turned out the movie people wentwith an instrumental, "so we thought, let' s putthis out for Christmas and maybe it can dosome good. We're doing a little thing here forthe homeless with the Einstein Brothers thisyear; a soup kitchen and other things .. . sortof remembering what Christmas is really allabout."

The magic of the track is Thorney'sdistinct vo cal perfo rmance. He is a songwriterfirst, which makes his delivery a bit out of the

ordinary. He is intent on getting the lyricsacross and he accomplishes this masterfullywith a unique vocal warmth and gruffness thatadds to the message content. The overall

production is in keeping with the vocalmessage. Noted hornman Guido Basso adds atouch of realism, with inserts of a SalvationArmy band coronet.

"We wanted to make the first half of thesong like it was coming from the streets; a guyfronting a Salvation Army band." Notedhornman Guido Basso adds a touch of realismwith inserts of a Salvation Army band coronet.

In the second half, there's a decidedchange in delivery. The marching drum soundbecomes more contemporary and the stringarrangements, by Jack Lenz adds a softertouch. "Like . . . in something as rough as astreet corner Salvation Army band, there canbe beautiful thoughts. We wanted to make thesong a little visual as well."

It's expected the song will be released asa CD single in time for next Christmas.

King Apparatus ensures that ska is not deadSka is not dead, mahn. Toronto's KingApparatus, recent winners of a CASBY awardas the best ska band in Canada, are livingtestament that ska music can still pack a dancefloor.

David Raider, Vice President Sales ofThe Record Peddler, reports that sales on theKing Apparatus self -titled album "continue toincrease," from coast to coast. The strongestregion is Southern Ontario, but stores inCalgary and Edmonton have established"regular re -order patterns" since the releasedate.

Halifax is also kicking in with sales.Graeme Boyce, manager of the band, suggeststhat "perhaps it was our week-long stand atThe Palace, or our week of Frosh Week gigsthis past September, that created an interest."

The band was the headline act at TheSpectrum in Toronto on Dec. 6, as part of theUnsigned, Sealed & Delivered record releaseparty. They have just completed a series ofdates through Southern Ontario and, after theSpectrum date, play Toronto's Beaches (8),followed by Maryhill (14), Peterborough (19),Toledo (20), Windsor (21), St. Catharines(27) and the Annual Christmas party at Lee'sPalace in Toronto (28).

While the band is commited to bringingska music to the public en mass, they have aterrific sense of humour, as evident by manyof the short songs and titles on their self -titleddebut album. Their next video is for the songBuy Our Stuff (Make Us Rich). If ska finds theaudience it deserves, the boys in the bandwon't have to worry about the latter.

Upcoming year to be a good one for Liona BoydOne doesn't have to be a fortune teller to knowLiona Boyd, Canada's first lady of the guitar,is in for a very good year in 1992.

On New Year's Eve, she'll be meetingthe likes of Mikhail Gorbachev and BorisYeltsin at a gala affair in Moscow, with plansto perform a small concert for Moscow'smayor, plus take in the Bolshoi Ballet and theMoscow Circus on a four day visit to theSoviet Union.

And upon her return, wedding bells willbe peeling in Beverly Hills as Boyd will betying the knot for the first time when shemarries American businessman John B. Simonon February 2nd.

Ah, isn't love a many fine splendoredthing?

"It really is and I am just thrilled topieces," the guitarist told RPM recently overlunch, while giving off an almost giddy glowof happiness.

Will marriage curtail her rather extensiveworld tours?

"I don't think so. I've cut back to about40 dates a year which is plenty. John travelsa great deal with his business interests, so we

try to coordinate our time away from hometogether."

Boyd said she has tentative plans to playBrazil in June and Barcelona around the timeof next year's Olympics. She expressedsatisfaction with her latest album release,Dancing On The Edge, but regretted the songthat Rush's Alex Lifeson guested on didn'tquite make her album.

"We gave him credit on the album cover, but it was one of those things where the songdidn't quite fit with the others, so we took itoff. I had the same thing happen to me onJulian Lennon's latest. I got credit on thealbum sleeve, but the song I played on didn'tmake it."

Such changes are a fact of life in thecrazy record business, a fact that Boyd canattest to. "When I was doing my Personaalbum in London it was quite a thrill to getDavid Gilmour in the studio and he playedwonderfully. We also got Eric Clapton to playbut he was away on tour in America at thetime, so we sent him the track and he did it inAmerica, so I never got to meet him. Buthopefully someday."

Songwriters and publishers honoured at dinner

CMPA awards dinner another glittering affairThis year's Canadian Music PublishersAssociation (CMPA) Songwriter of the YearAward Dinner, once again displayed themeticulous care and attention to every detailthat organizers Fran Shaw and Norma Barnetthave worked so diligently to present for thepast five years. On entering the Casa Loma'smain ent;ance, table assignation was madeimmediately.

After a bit of wine and networking, attendees were led into the main ballroom. The candlelit tables were highlighted by anappropriately -designed, music motifcentrepiece. Place settings were cleverly-nameplated with a mirror identifying the placeholder along with a die -cut mini -tuxedo folderdisplaying the menu and the program.

David Basskin, General Manager of theCanadian Musical Reproduction RightsAgency (CMRRA) started the evening offwith his usual light-hearted comments on hisfavourite topic, songwriting. "It all starts witha song. I've given a lot of speeches this yearabout impending changes in technology, andhow they're going to re -shape the musicbusiness. But none of those developmentswill change the fact that people don't listen toCD's or cassettes or sound carriers . . . theylisten to music and all music starts with theessential creative act: the writing of a song."

After offering a toast "in memory of afine songwriter, dearly missed today . . .

Wolfgang Amadeus Mozart," Basskin told hisaudience that between 1791 and 1991,"plentyhas changed. But today music publishers andsongwriters are still pursuing fair recognitionand compensation for their talents, and thispouts us from time to time against the users ofmusic in our efforts. But we don't act inisolation. In the current economic climate, weall have to take a hard look at the role thatmusic plays, not only in our own lives, but inthe lives of our audiences."

Basskin also drew aparallel to thepublic'sbuying habits and that of the need to recognizethe entertainment value of recorded music."The next time you see a kid go by wearing apair of Nike Air Jordans, think about what'son his or her feet, not a pair of shoes, but adozen unpurchased CD's. A Nintendo GameBoy in someone's hands? That's eight or nineCD's that weren't bought. Each of us come upwith more examples. While music is still thetoppriority in somepeople's lives, that numberofpeople is shrinking. The fact is that no otherform of entertainment except recorded musichas the replayability factor. See a movie oncefor eight dollars. Buy a paperback for thesame amount. Go to a restaurant or a themepark. They're all forms of entertainment andthey're all one-time experiences. In a world oflimited discretionary income, thanks to theGST, more limited than ever, everyone ofthese one-time entertainment purchases is,money lost forever to the music business.Only recorded music offers you the opportunityto enjoy what you've purchased again andagain. We need, as an industry, to bring thesame smarts and effectiveness to the marketing

of all music that the athletic shoe industry hasbrought to its products. All of us, musicpublishers, songwriters, record companies andretailers alike can only benefit from morebusiness, and we must work together to achieveit."

The keynote speaker for the evening was"Shingoose" Jonnie, whose articulate and veryhumourous musings about aboriginal rightsstruck a comedic, but nonetheless seriouschord with his audience. "Imagine what ourhistory books would say if our people wouldhave had a say in writing them. If it wasn't forthe active intervention of the Iroquois andAlgonquin people on behalf of the English inthe 17 and 1800's, we'd all be speaking Frenchnow, and English would be our secondlanguage. We might even be called Americansif it wasn't for Joseph Brant siding with theLoyalists. My point is, you realize itor not, people of North American First Nationsidentity have in the past, and will continue inthe past, and will continue in the future, toenrich the lives of all music lovers no matterwhat their ethnic origin. The only thing thatlimits creative musical expression ironicallyis the music industry itself. Music merchantsare more preoccupied with catering to currenttrends, rather than setting new ones. But that'sthe bottom line and I understand that. What Idon't understand is why there can't be acompromise. Why can't the music industrydesignate a small portion of their resourcesand prime time to promoting indigenouscreative works? Through this type of creativedevelopment, who knows, some great songsmay emerge that will strengthen our collectiveidentity."

In closing, Shingoose let a little morenative humour hang loose. "Before I go, Iwould like to offer a few words ofencouragement to all you budding writers ...geta real job! To all you happening songwriters... could you spare a couple of points on yournext hit... better yet... need a co -writer?. Toall you music publishers . . . if you think wecould do business, I'll get my Indian agent tocall your Jewish agent ... and we'll do lunch. To all thepeople who helped make this eveningpossible . . . see, I told you . . . you'd doanything to have a party in a castle."Needless to say Shingoose received a standingovation.

Scratch those rumours . . . ! Contrary towhat some may have believed, but never readhere, PolyGram isn't moving its distributionto Toronto. In fact, I've got it on pretty goodauthority that a $1.2 million carousel systemhas been installed in PolyGram's 50,000 squarefoot warehouse in Montreal. This ware-house is servicing all the labels under thePolyGram umbrella. (EC: Rumours are onlyrumours . . .

Four buck CDs? Gotcha . . . ! The guyswho lifted more than $200,000 worth of CDs,mostly Michael Jackson's new Dangerousrelease, from Saturn's warehouse, obviouslyweren't in the business. Daringly different . . . ! Aspects Of Lovetook me a little by surprise. The Andrew LloydWebber love quadrangle with a twist, wasunlike what Webber has done before. Well, tobegin with, the -musical was given anoverhaul by Robin Phillips, and Webberhimself was in the audience. Sitting a couplerows over from me in the mezzanine ... so theseats I had must have been good. Webber evenwent on stage for a final curtain bow with thecast and Phillips. A nice touch. Will the showfly? Lacking the excitement of the effects ofPhantom and the great music of Cats, the run,in my opinion, won't be as long as theproducers had hoped for. (EC: Aspects ofLoveor Lust . . . ?)

What's going on at radio ... ? One of thecentral -based broadcast empire builders with astation on the West Coast is in trouble. Watchfor a "for sale" sign. It might even become aone -owner station. The same thing is brewing inAlberta, a different empire builder, and in theMaritimes, and yet another empire builder. A few choice words to think about over the holiday

RPM - December 21, 1991 - 5

'Twas the night before ratings, and all through ...by Ronald T. Robinson

'Twas the night before ratings, and all throughthe stationThe jocks were on valium, the GM on vacation.

Diaries had been mailed out by B.B. and M.In the hope that returns would at'least get byten.

The "suits" had their pagers all ready andchargedThey dreamed of commissions one -fifty, large.

With the PD in his office and me on the airThe promotion was ready. What it cost, no onecared.

When out in the hallway, (a scene no oneliked)"Posties" with signs that read, "We're now onstrike!"

I finished my liner, which by then, I hadbotchedWhile the PD hunched over and threw up hisscotch.

The gloom in the eyes of a crestfallen staffWas enough to bring joy to a "print" adman'slaugh.

When what should appear like the cold handof DeathBut another consultant with beer on his breath.

More rapid than firings his formats they cameAnd he stomped and he snorted. From his

nostrils came flame.

"There's Easy. There's Country. There'sAlternative GroovesThere's Rockers. There's Schlockers. There'sGold and All -News.

To the top of the heap. Till we are Number OneWe'll slash 'ern and trash 'em. Go get me mygun."

As dry heaves before the book does arriveSignal a chance that you may not surviveBack to the control room in a panic I roaredWith a stack of my favourites, then quick -locked the door.

Then in a twinkling, I was back on the airRockin' and Talkin', I just didn't careAs I threw off the cans to prepare my next setThere stood the consultant like he'd just losta bet.

He was dressed all in tye-dye, right down tohis toesWith what seemed to be talcum smudged onhis nose

A rack of CDs and a poster pie-graghGave a hint of the future to all of our staff.

His eyes, how they burned. His stubble, soswishHis cheeks were so sallow, like dead rottingfish

His mouth he had squeezed into one thinstraight line.

And his nose gave a clue that one day, he'd dotime.

From the look of our PD, we knew who toblameThe consultant just glared and kept yankinghis chainHe had a cruel face and his hair brushedstraight backAnd what there was of it, was under attack.

He wag wiry and lean and quite sure of himselfAnd I reached for the Tums below the cartshelfA twitch of his eye and a jerk of his headGave me reason to believe I was next thing todead.

He spoke not a word, turned and slipped on thefloormatWhat fell out of his case was the next No -TalkformatHe let out a moan, a sound full of dread.

And before disappearing, he pointed and said"Wherever I am, rest assured I am listening."Our PD just stood there, his face wet andglistening. With a hand on my shoulder, he gave me alook. And said, "Merry Christmas to all, and have agood book."

RPM - December 21, 1991 - 9

COVER STORY - by David PiersonAttic's President Al Mair is "wildly nationalistic"Al Mair, President of Attic Records, the largestindependent record label in Canada, is beingonly slightly facetious when asked what advicehe'd give if someone wanted to start a recordcompany today.

"In a word, DON'T!", Mair says with achuckle. "No, seriously, when we started wehad like $300,000 in the bank from our backers.Today, you'd need $3 million, what with thecost of studio time, promotion and videoproduction, it's an unbelievable expense todayto launch an artist."

Mair has always been in love with therecord business, ever since his teenage yearsworking in a record store. As a University ofToronto accounting student, he began workingfor Capitol Records in their accountingdepartment.

Mair moved to London Records to takeover in publicity when Walt Grealis left tostart a record trade industry publication calledRPM.

Mair was working for MCA Canada inthe late 60's when he discovered a thenrelatively unknown guitarist/songwriter bythe name of Gordon Lightfoot playing in aYonge St. pub. Knocked out by his abundanttalent, Mair became Lightfoot's manager, apartnership which lasted until '76.

"I learned a lot from Gord, the mostimportant thing was, he was the first majorartist that proved you don't have to leaveCanada to be major league successful."

It was Lightfoot's success that providedthe inspiration for Mair and his partner, TomWilliams, to start Attic Records in '74.

"Tom and I felt there was enough talentedCanadians out there who just weren't gettingsigned to the major labels and we wanted tofill that void."

Flood was the first group signed to Attic, followed by Shirley Eikhard and Ken Tobias.

FACTOR grants

But it was Hagood Hardy's Homecomingalbum that went double platinum that firmlyestablished Attic Records, two years after itsinception.

Triumph's multi -platinum, worldwidesuccess made Attic Records a major presence, which it has continued with the success ofartists like Lee Aaron. But Attic isn't justconcerned with Canadian acts, as it hasdistributed records in Canada by suchinternational stars as George Thorogood, JudasPriest, Katrina & The Waves and Motorhead.

"You can't stick your head in the sandand pretend the world doesn't exist outside ofCanada, which is why we distribute otheracts."

But promoting Canadian acts remainsMair's number one priority as he proudlysays, "I'm a wildly nationalistic promoter ofCanadian talent.

"Of course, I'm a bit biased, but I firmlybelieve that a Canadian artist is better servedif he or she signs with a Canadian label. Youoften only get one shot with a US label and ifit goes nowhere, you're history. And if thathappens, then it's real hard to eet a Canadianlabel interested in you again. It took LeeAaron several albums before she reallydeveloped into a good songwriter and startedhaving big sales. But we were committed andstuck with her, whereas a lot of US labelswouldn't have."

Mair practices what he preaches, as he isalso the President of the Canadian IndependentRecord Producers Association (CIRPA).

"Next week I'm with MichaelWilson and then the Prime Minister. Therecord business generates something like $250million a year in revenue in Canada alone.Anne Murray just grossed over $400,000 inconcert revenues from her O'Keefe Centreshows in Toronto, that's a lot of revenue and

based on "professionalism" - SymFACTOR's Executive Director, Heather Sym,says an artist has the best chance of getting agrant or loan from FACTOR by puttingtogether the most professional demo andpublicity package possible.

"An artist's strongest selling point is aprofessionally done demo. It's best to keepthe music in one style so the listening panelcan get a clear focus on the band. Also includeany press clippings, a bio and picture of thegroup. Plus, an outline of expected studio, video and tour costs. And what, if any, plansof national distribution."

Not exactly the carefree, crazy worldthat one normally associates with rock n' roll, but Sym makes no apologies for FACTOR'sdemands for professionalism. "Hey, this abusiness just like anything else and it's notcheap to make a record these days. So youbetter believe, we're only committed to helpingartists who are seriously committedthemselves."

Sym got her start in the music industrywhen she happily quit her insurance business

job to become a receptionist for the CanadianTalent Library. When Libary merged withFACTOR in '85, Sym came too and rosethrough the ranks to become the organization'sExecutive Director.

"I love the music industry. I used to bereally painfully shy but this is such a peopleoriented business that I've had to come out ofmy shell and deal with people and I'm reallygrateful for that."

Sym says that another gratifying aspectof her job is when an artist makes it big withthe help of a FACTOR loan or grant. But if shehad one wish it would be that more artistsacknowledge the FACTOR contribution upontheir success.

"Alannah Myles was terrific. When shedid interviews she told people about how theFACTOR loan got her recording career startedand I got calls from Los Angeles inquiringabout our organization. That's what we needmore of, because the more people that knowabout us, then the more contributions we'llget and the more artists we can help out."

a lot of tax dollars. Artists like her, Rush andJeff Healey are international stars who generatemillions of dollars that come back to Canadaand I think it's time the government recognizedthis fact and startedpaying more attention andgiving more help to this industry."

Gold to Jesus Jones forCapitol's Doubt albumJesus Jones have struck gold in Canada. Theband members received their awards forDoubt, their second release on Capitol, after asold -out performance (one of two) at Toronto'sConcert Hall last month.

As well, the band played dates inEdmonton, Calgary, Saskatoon and Winnipeg."Considering this was the very first timethey've ever played in these cities," saysMariann Girard, Media Relations for Capitol,"the turn -out and audience reaction wasphenomenal. Every date was incrediblysuccessful."

While in Winnipeg, the band held anautograph session at St. Vital's HMV Storewhich attracted a crowd estimated at close toone thousand. Doubt has been nominated fora CASBY this year in the International Albumof the Year category.

Jesus Jones is currently charting on theRPM 100 Hit Tracks with Real, Real, Real. The single was taken from the Doubt albumnow in its 32nd week on the 100 Albums chart.

A few of the almost one thousand fans whocrowded Into the Jesus Jones' autographsession at HMV's St. Vital store In Winnipeg.

MICHAEL JACKSONDangerousEpic - EK 45400-H

It's been four years since the oneglove man has released an albumand It's obvious that the singer hasbeen listening to the radio during thattime by the evidence of Dangerous.Jackson tries to cover all the basesby Including rap, dance, soul,Infectious grooves and hard rock riffsall Into one smoothly streamlinedpackage designed to sell eight zillioncopies. And for the most part hesucceeds. The debut single Black OrWhite hits a groove, with Guns N'Roses guitarist Slash hammering outa good, chunky hard riff throughoutthe song. Jam, Why You Wanna TripOn Me and She Drives Me Wild allcarry the signature Jackson dancinggrooves. The one truly dreadful songon the album is Heal The World, asaccharine -sweet ballad withHallmark card lyrics about saving theworld. (CD reviewed) - DP

BOBBY DARINThe Best Of Vol 1 & 2Atco - 7 91794-2-P

This best of collection reallyshowcases the remarkable diversityof Bobby Darin's too short singingcareer. Anyone over the age of 40should know the jumpin' jive of SplishSplash or the velvety smooth MackThe Knife. But this set reveals anotherside of Darin by including songs likeTim Hardin's If I Were A Carpenterand a protest song like Simple SongOf Freedom. Darin also pays homageto Ray Charles by doing an exactcopy of What'd I Say. Might MightyMan and Early In The Morning provethat Darin was of the first rock n'rollers. Composite liner notes andpictures reveal an artist that was trulyahead of his time and one who'slegacy will continue to beremembered. (CD reviewed) - DP

Ross Carlin's dream of a revitalized national anthem comes true

Professional treatment for Canada's national anthemDuring the Persian Gulf war, Ross Carlin, former on -air personality at DC103.5Orangeville, Ontario, set himself a goal to putin motion aplan to revitalize Canada's nationalanthem (RPM - Feb 2/91 and Oct. 26/91). Itwas his hope to harness the support of Canada's

The 0 Canada Foundation troika at RPM'soffices, (I to r) Hayward Parrott, Ross Carlinand Brian Lyon.

recording artists to add that ingredient ofnationalistic excitement to a recording of 0Canada.

The Gulf war was over, but back homethere was a different kind of war being waged,Quebec and the rest of Canada were at oddswith each other.

"I first approached the Juno people, backin March. My idea originally, was to havethem sing it as a finale for the show. But LynneHarvey (CBC-TV producer) said `no way,'there wasn't enough lead-in time."

Toronto's Mix 99.9 offersprizes for holiday sobrietyIn an effort to prevent drinking and drivingduring the holiday season, Toronto's Mix99.9 and the Celebration '92 Lottery havecoordinated a program "that could makesomeone rich by acting responsibly."

Throughout the month of December, anyone who has had too much to drink isasked to take a cab instead of drivingthemselves, and submit the cab receipt alongwith their name and telephone number to thestation.

A draw will take place on Jan.3rd for thegrand prize of $10,000 in cash and $10,000worth of Celebration '92 Lottery tickets. Thefinal draw for the Ultimate Lottery, Celebration'92, will take place on Jan 5. The grand prizeis $5,000,000.

A special Don't Drink and Drive posterhas been distributed to restaurants, bars andBeer stores in the Metro Toronto area. As anadded incentive, the station has appointedspotters to look for the displayed posters. Aprize of $100 will be awarded to variousrestaurants and bars where the posters aredisplayed.

Carlin had picked up somepress however, and Jane Rowan of Toronto's McLear Placecalled him and said she had read about hisprojeck in RPM and that McLear would like todonate[ studio time. She also told him thatHayward Parrott, one of Canada's topproducers, and one who was familiar withthese types ofprojects, was interested intalkingto him about producing the session. After ashort meeting, Carlin and Parrott became ateam and Brian Lyon, former PromotionsDirector of CFNY FM Toronto was contactedand a troika formed.

Carlin admits there lots of enthusiasmfor the project wherever they went, "but we

"I made it clear up front that wedidn't want any government

interference ..."

needed money, and that's when the going gottough. Just on a whim I contacted my localmember ofparliament, Garth Turner, who wasalso the Business Editor of the Toronto Sun. Itold him it was tough to get funding for theproject and the idea lived or died with him. Iasked for his help as a business consultant, butI made it clear up front that we didn't want anygovernment interference . . . I don't want thegovernment to run this or use it in any way asa vehicle to get re-elected or anything politicalat all. He agreed and, not in his capacity as anMP, but as a man with a lot of contacts in thebusiness world, he was the guy who went outand raised $400,000."

The money was raised through sevensponsors: Canadian Airlines, CanadianNational, Canada Post, Coca-Cola Canada,Ford Motor Company, -Hunter Ltd.and Prudential Insurance.

After laying out pre -production plans, arranger Eric Robertson was contacted. Hewas asked if he could come up with two totallydifferent versions of the anthem, symphonicand contemporary. He readily agreed tobecome a part of the project and the team wascomplete. Shortly thereafter, Carlin and hiscohorts founded the 0 Canada Foundation.

"Our plan was to sincerely and honestlyinvite every single artist and musician wecould to take part. This was to be a gift toCanada from the music industry."

Lou Ann Wheaton joined the group asTalent Coordinator. Her mandate was toliterally phone every artist and musicianavailable in Canada and invite them to takepart. Parrott chose the lead singers, based ontheir p opularity and who he believed deservedto sing the lead lines.

The first three people to sign up wereMaureen Forester, Tommy Hunter and GeddyLee (who had to drop out because of a Europeantour). "Then we knew the project would betaken seriously by others," and it was. Quicklyfollowing were Rita MacNeil, MichelleWright, Paul Janz, Maestro Fresh Wes,Alannah Myles, Murray McLauchlan, PatsyGallant, Luba, Salome Bey, Suzanne Stevens,

Robert Pilon, Claude Naubert, Liz Tansey,Natalie Choquette, Gino Vannelli and RandyBachman for a guitar solo. The numbers thenbegan to grow like topsy until there was a fullcomplement of 244 singers and musicians.

Carlin points out that although there wereobvious people missing, "it was just ascheduling problem."

Now, the real hard work began. Flying inpeople from different parts of Canada, scheduling and rescheduling itineraries. "Oneday we had ten people in the studio, the nextday 35 and one day there were 65 people in thestudio." Besides McLear Place, Toronto'sManta Sound was used for the large symphonicsession, Tom Lavin's Blue Wave Studios inVancouver for the western people andMontreal's Studio Tempo for the Quebecartists.

One of the most interesting andhumourous happenings during the sessionswas with Maestro Fresh Wes. The first chorusof the anthem is carved in stone, "that can't betouched, but the second chorus is the one

"We have the world's firstanthem with a rap

line in it ..."

where we took a few liberties. We originallyhad Maestro Fresh Wes down to do the line`from east to western sea.' He looked at us andsaid, 'you know, I don't sing, and this linedoesn't rap. He scratched it out and in tenseconds rewrote the line. We wondered howthis would sit with the historians, but as itturned out the rap line is what everyone seemsto key into. When Maureen Forester heard it,she rolled her eyes and said 'Oh my, will wehave something to talk about at the bridgeclub now.' We have the world's first anthemwith a rap line in it ... and it was written in tenseconds and six takes later, history was made."

Another memorable happening for therecording was Paul Janz, the only lead to dohis entire line in one take. He drove foran hourand a half from Mission, B.C. to the BlueWave studio, sang die line and left. Carlin andhis crew had booked an hour and a half ofstudio time for the session.

A cassette of both the symphonic andcontemporary versions of 0 Canada are beingshipped across Canada to every school, libraryand Legion, courtesy of Cinram. CDs andcassettes will be available through directmarketing. They are packaged in an attractivebox, which also contains a 24 -page full colourbooklet.

Radio stations are being supplied with aCD of both versions, and Carlin and his crewhope to influence them to air one of theversions on January 1st at noon, central time.Warren Cosford, General Manager ofLondon's BX-93 is soliciting his 65 -station 0Canada network and the Canadian Associationof Broadcasters (CAB) are also lending theirsupport for this noon playing of Canada'srevitalized anthem. As well, Standard andBN's satellite networks have been utilized tosend the song out in advance to all theirstations. But Carlin assures, all the stationswill have the CDs by January 1st.

what's new in trends, and taking a highly -charged and packed -full -of entertainmentspecial to the university level created a levelof excitement and acceptance rarely seen on acountry cum pop variety show. "I also wantedto show how much a part of our Canadianculture country music is. And our audience, about one thousand university students, responded as enthusiastically as I could everhave hoped."

Canada's leading variety producer in thetelevision field, Sandra Faire, who hassuccessfully guided similar specials for Fox,Anne Murray, Bryan Adams, k.d.lang andCorey Hart, will once again be in charge of theproduction crew. Fox's last special, George

Fox's New Country, aired last year, drew asurprise rating of close to one million viewers, surprising, in view of the fact that this wasFox's first special.

Faire points out that both she and Foxwanted to show "how much broader countrymusic is today than it was, say, ten years ago.Look at the range of our guests and theirmusic. Kashtin are singing in their nativeMontagnais, instead of English, yet themeaning about their people comes throughloud and clear. If the '90s is the decade forcountry music, and I believe it is, it's also thetime for native Canadians. And country musicis broad enough today to embrace that diversity.Having said that, it's always fun working withGeorge and, as in the last special, it shows onthe screen."

The Top album! It was close, but R.E.M. hasthe No. 1 album of 1991. Out Of Time stayedon top of the Albums chart for eight weeks, two more than Extreme's Pornograffitti, whichends up as the No. 2 album. (Everything I Do)I Do It For You was easily the No. 1 song of1991. It's the opposite of last year when thetop album was way ahead of all the others andthe battle for song-of-the-yearwas very close. What was the top album and song from lastyear?

The top crossover artist. There is only oneartist whose name appears at least twice oneach of the year end Dance, AC, Hit Tracks, and Albums charts. Mariah Carey had threesongs in the Top 100, three in the AC Top 100,two in the Dance Top 50, and two of the yearstop albums.

Out with the old . This year was quite abit different than last. In 1990, there werethree artists who had an album in the Top 10which was also a Top 10 album the yearbefore! This year, no one accomplished thatfeat. The closest was Mariah Carey's self -titled album. It ended up as the No. 4 albumthis year, after being the No. 13 album lastyear. As a comparison, there were only threealbums in the TOP 40 this year that were evenin the Top 40 last year!

An A&M sweep! A&M takes the Gold, Silverand Bronze on the Hit Tracks chart. BryanAdams has the No. 1 & 3 songs, whileExtreme's More Than Words comes in at No.2. Warner Music ends up ahead at the top ofthe Albums chart though, With five of the Top10 albums.

The top dance act. It wasn't even close! C+C Music Factory is the only act that had threesongs in the Top 50! Not to mention the factthose three songs came in at Nos. 1, 2, and 5!

Canadians fared well . . . Of the Top 20albums, four of them are from Canadian artists.Compare that to last year, when only oneCanuck cracked the Top 20. As well, there arefour Cancon albums in the Top 20, but not thesame ones. Confused? Well, Rod Stewart'sVagabond Heart contains Cancon material soit counts, but Bryan Adams' Waking Up TheNeighbours doesn't have any Cancon material,so it doesn't count.

Last year's best! Did you remember a yearago? The top album of 1990 was SineadO'Connor's I Do Not Want What I Haven'tGot. It was on top for 15 straight weeks, andwas well ahead of . . . But Seriously by PhilCollins. The No. 1 song last year was PhilCollins' I Wish It Would Rain Down.
