  • What is it? occurs when the pancreas no longer produces the insulin needed. (Australian Diabetes Council, 2013) the pancreas makes some insulin but it is not produced in the amount your body needs and does not work effectively. (Diabetes Australia, 2011) is a metabolic disease that develops when the body doesnt produce enough insulin and the insulin is not working effectively. ( Australian Diabetes Council, 2013) Diabetes Type 2 (MADE4LLCOM., 2013)

  • Physical Concerns Diabetes Type 2 (Global Granary, 2013) Feeling tired because sugar levels arent being controlled which can lead to passing out and falling asleep at the wheel. (Allen, K, 2013) Numbness in the feet because of nerve damage and blood supply (Diabetes Australia, Diabetes and Your Feet, 2013) Vision loss due to Diabetes Retinopathy (damage to the very small blood vessels on the back of the eye) (Diabetes Australia, Diabetes and Your Eyes, 2013) Hyperglycaemia (Diabetes Australia, Hyperglycaemia, 2013)

  • Psychological Concerns Diabetes Type 2 Having diabetes is a pain in the arse, annoying and frustrating. Having to take pills and remembering to take medication daily is just a constant reminder that it will never go away. Its something you have to worry about everyday and its a part of you that will be there forever. ( Allen, K, 2013) (Althucher, 2013)

  • Incidence of Diabetes Type 2 in the Community In 2007-08 about 898,800 (4.4%) Australians had been diagnosed with diabetes at some point in their life. 87% of those had type 2 diabetes and 10% had type 1. (Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute, 2012) Diabetes Type 2

  • Mortality Rate of People with Diabetes Type 2 In 2008 diabetes was ranked in the top 10 leading causes of deaths in Australia. (Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute, 2012) The total number of deaths due to diabetes occurred in people less than 65 years of age was 14%. (Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute, 2012) Between 97 and 2007 the death rate from diabetes related causes dropped by 19% among people who were born overseas compared with 17% of Australian born people. (Baker Heart & Diabetes Institute, 2012) Diabetes Type 2

  • Gender Differences of people with Diabetes Approximately 4.4% of Australians were diagnosed with Type 2 Diabetes. 501,300 males were diagnosed with diabetes and 88.6% were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes. 397,500 females were diagnosed with diabetes. 86.3% were diagnosed with type 2 diabetes which is less than that of males.
