Dr. Alonza L. Lawrence Dr. Alonza Lee Lawrence, a native of Franklin Virginia is the fifth
of eight siblings born to Winston and Ruth Lawrence and father of
Alonza Brandon and Ariel Denise Lawrence.
Dr. Lawrence holds the Doctorate of Ministry Degree from Union
Theological Seminary and the Masters’ of Divinity Degree from
Virginia Union University in Richmond, Virginia. He earned his
undergraduate degree in mathematics with a minor in education
from Virginia Union University after having enrolled for a brief stay
at Virginia Tech.
It was at the Westwood Baptist Church, Richmond, Virginia that Dr. Lawrence began his
pastoral career. It is with this congregation he did his seminary internship and later became
the Youth Minister, Assistant to the Pastor, and assumed the Pastorate in 1983. He served this
congregation for sixteen years, pastoring them for eleven.
Dr. Lawrence’s experience in higher education includes teaching in the Department of
Mathematics for the Richmond School System, and adjunct professor at Virginia Union
University. He currently serves as adjunct professor at the Samuel DeWitt Proctor School of
Theology at Virginia Union University.
In November 1994, Dr. Lawrence became the ninth Pastor of the Moore Street Missionary
Baptist Church, a congregation that was celebrating its 119th Anniversary at the time of his
arrival. He continues to minister to a growing congregation. Since accepting the call to the
Moore Street Missionary Baptist Church, Dr. Lawrence has through the grace of God, worked
to establish many new ministries.
He participates in various ministry opportunities beyond the doors of Moore Street. He is an
active participant in the Baptist General Convention of Virginia and has served as the president
of ABCOTS. Dr. Lawrence has served as president of the Jackson Ward and Vicinity
Ministers’ Conference and is an active member of the Baptist Ministers’ Conference of
Richmond and Vicinity. He has completed the Pastoral Excellence Program of the Lott Carey
Baptist Foreign Missions Convention which gave him the opportunity to minister in Jamaica,
Zimbabwe, Guyana, and South Africa.
The members of the Moore Street Missionary Baptist Church feel blessed to have an under-
shepherd who encourages them to seek direction from God as they aspire to reach new heights
in their spiritual growth and development. He interacts with many groups on an on-going basis
and does not hesitate to take on new and innovative challenges. A meek and humble man with
an unselfish love for God’s people, he displays the mannerisms of an obedient and courageous
disciple who lives by the scripture, “and we know that all things work together for good to
them that love God, to them who are the called according to His purpose.”

The Diaconate of Shiloh Baptist Church The words deacon or deaconess mean to serve or support. The words have both a general and
technical sense in the New Testament. However, these words have come to mean “to serve” in
any capacity. A deacon is a male who serves. A deaconess is a female who serves.
In the New Testament church, as the membership began to grow and the outreach to those in
need increased, it became necessary to select and ordain servants to assist the spiritual leaders.
Standards for those chosen are recorded in 1 Timothy 3:8-13. According to Acts 3:8-10 and
other Bible commentaries, the main duty of the deacons appear to have been the care of the
poor.
Deacons are basically chosen the same way they were in the early church. Men, and now
women, are chosen based on the requisites of Acts 6:3 and the qualifications in 1 Timothy 3:8-
9. Just as the practice of ordaining more than deacons and preachers is slowly changing, so are
more and more churches ordaining women as deacons and heads of other church ministries not
historically led by women. As we read 1 Timothy 3:8-10, the qualifications for deacons hold
true for women as well as for men. Even Paul in Romans 16 recognized Phoebe, a woman, as
a deacon. (Romans 16:1)
In Baptist churches, during a trial period of six months to a year, the candidates study Bible
doctrine, participate in church ministries and are given the opportunity to minister to the
spiritual and physical needs of the congregation. In some instances, there is an ordination
council that questions those who would be deacons to determine if they are ready to be
ordained. If they are, then an ordination service is performed that includes the laying on of
hands by a pastor and ordained deacons upon them as a confirmation of their service to God,
the congregation and the community. After this confirmation comes a cooperative effort of the
pastor and deacons to care for those whom the Lord has given to them to serve.
In verses 8 and 9, Paul gave qualifications that are needed for choosing deacons and the
qualifications are also worthy of being requested of all who would serve in non-clerical
positions in ministry. With these qualifications Paul provides a look at the nature of the moral
and spiritual character these persons should possess.
Deacons [All ordained Non-Clergy] must be serious…mature and respected by others inside
and outside the church. Maturity is a necessary characteristic for serious leadership work.
Leaders are faced weekly with life and death matters presented by those they serve. This is
serious business.
Then, there is the important matter of being leaders who are respected. Job said that
people show you respect “when they listen to you and wait for your advice, because you spoke
to them with gentle words." (Job 29:21-22). Christian leaders must respect others in order to
receive respect. This too is serious business.
…not double-tongued..An ordained non-clergy leader must not be double-tongued,
meaning involved in gossip or not having a conversation of integrity. Titus 2:8 states, “If they
P A G E 5 V O L U M E 1 , I S S U E 8
The Diaconate of Shiloh Baptist Church speak the truth then they can’t be criticized.” These leaders must also be persons who are
truthful and discreet. Persons are apt to share a multitude of very confidential information with
today’s non-clergy leaders. Leaders must know how to handle such information at all times.
…not indulging in much wine…During Paul’s day wine was a commonly used substance
much more so than today. Drinking too much wine led to drunkenness. For ordained servants,
the awareness that they are always on call adds a further requirement for sobriety, if one is
needed. Although Paul mentions wine, because it was the toxin of the day, modernly any
excessive habits that deaden one's senses and in any way harms their ability to serve must be
avoided.
…not greedy for money…Being greedy is a sign of discontentment with one’s self. Such
discontent actually cannot be cured by money. An ordained Christian servant must never be
focused on monetary gain to the harm of their being a walking advertisement for the Savior or
the church.
…they must hold fast to the mystery of the faith with a clear conscience…All ordained
non-clergy leaders must know what they believe and why they believe it. Much harm is done
by ordained leaders who are biblically illiterate and unaware of the polity of their faith
community. Continuous training/education is necessary. The training provided before
ordination will provide a decent foundation, but it will not be sufficient for those who will
provide long-term service. In addition to Bible study and Sunday school classes offered at the
local church, and two or three day classes offered at denominational gatherings, more and
more ordained non-clergy persons are expected to receive Bible College and or seminary
training. Such training is long overdue.
The second part of this verse concerns persons never being ashamed to share their beliefs
with others whenever the opportunity presents. How much stronger would the Church be if
all ordained leaders knew enough and had the courage to share and speak up about sin in the
world while standing on the Word of God?
On November 29, 2015, fourteen members of Shiloh were blessed to join the Diaconate Team
of this great church. Their voyage began a year earlier, (October 2014) with spiritual
anticipation and with a pious apprehension as to the future. After a year of praying together,
studying together, sharing our thoughts and ideas with one another, we found ourselves in awe
of the goodness that God had gifted us. A transformed assurance of our salvation, and a sacred
and loving devotion to Almighty God, has been the starting point for our redeemed and
dedicated Christian Service. The call of these new servants was to work alongside of those
who had been previously ordained and consecrated, in support of the pastor, in implementing
God’s vision for this church.
As the Shiloh Diaconate works as God’s ministry team, Shiloh is poised to become a Beacon
of Love, serving Christ by serving people.
