On behalf of the Kenowa AMBUCS, I welcome you to the 50th Annual AMBUCS Memorial Day Parade here in Jenison. The parade, along with our annual 5k race, are our club’s major fundraisers. We use 100% of the proceeds from these activities in our local community by giving away AmTrykes, funding other mobility-related projects, sponsoring scholarships for furthering the

education of therapists as well as scholarships for children to go to therapy camps. Kenowa AMBUCS extends its great thanks and appreciation to the community for participating in our events, whether as a participant, spectator, or volunteer. The Jenison Memorial Day Parade started in May of 1965 as

the Jenison AMBUCS Clean Up Day Parade. It was held on the

first Saturday in May and began at the 12th Avenue Church off

of Baldwin and went east to the Jenison Plaza at the corner of

Cottonwood. The AMBUCS organized the event with the

support of four local banks operating in Jenison. Aside from

the fire department’s participation, the featured attraction of

the parade was the children’s bicycle decorating contest, in

which local kids would decorate their bikes and ride them in

the parade. There were prizes for best entries and each child

got an ice cream bar for participating. In 1974, James

Holtvlewer, the current AMBUCS chapter president, rallied the

club and petitioned the township board to change the date to

Memorial Day and lengthen the parade route to the D&W off

of 20th Avenue. Since then, the parade has grown from a few

dozen parade entries and hundreds of spectators to between

100-120 entries and nearly 20,000 spectators. Every few years,

we are blessed with a military fly over right at the 9:00AM

start time. A special thanks to Baldwin Street CRC and Jenison

Christian for providing the parade staging area on their

property since 2009.

AMBUCS is a national non-profit service organization dedicated to creating mobility and independence for people with disabilities. Since 1994, AMBUCS chapters across the country have given away more than 10,000

therapeutic cycles to children and adults. These AmTrykes give the riders great enjoyment while helping to improve gross motor skills and overall physical and mental fitness. AMBUCS also helps with many other mobility projects, including building wheelchair accessible ramps, helping people learn to use speech recognition technology, maintaining a home medical equipment collection, providing scholarships for therapists as well as children to specialized camps, and providing playground equipment for kids with disabilities.

Kenowa AMBUCS serves the Grandville, Jenison, and Hudsonville area. We meet for lunch on the first and third Tuesday of each month. In addition to fundraising and doing good works in the community, we hear interesting presentations by speakers from the area, have site tours of area facilities, and have fun at social events throughout the year. We welcome new members any time of the year – come join us!
