In its 19 years of existence, the De Beers Shining Light Diamond Design Awards have been instrumental in supporting young jewellery designers in Southern Africa. It is through the Awards that De Beers has also created opportunities for some of the young aspirant designers to secure employment with renowned international jewellery manufacturing houses, with others establishing their own businesses.

The success of the Awards has been their ability to bring together industry stakeholders, including government, De Beers’ clients and Institutions of Higher Learning.

The Awards have also been able to attract entrants from rural and disadvantaged communities across South Africa, Namibia, and Botswana.

De Beers’ ultimate objective is to ensure that Southern Africantalent create compelling jewellery designs that are competitive internationally.

This objective has been realised with some of the Shining Light Jewellery pieces being worn at the Oscars and exhibited internationally in countries such as the USA, China and the United Kingdom.

The annual PlatAfrica competition has become synonymous with excellence in platinum jewellery design and manufacture. The competition showcases not only the beauty of platinum, but the remarkable talent of our local designers.

Platinum jewellery remains one of the most sought-after items and South Africa supplies approximately 80% of global demand for this rare metal. This competition provides local students the opportunity to work with this rare metal and develop the skills required for platinum design and manufacture.

In addressing local beneficiation of our country's resources, Anglo American Platinum’s sponsorship of the annual PlatAfrica jewellery design competition promotes innovation and technical competence in the design and manufacture of platinum jewellery. This coupled with stimulating market demand in platinum jewellery will assist the local industry in growing both local skills and job creation.

The Kirstenbosch Crown Jewels Centenary Jewellery Collection was created by seven award winning jewellers supported by Anglo American Platinum specifically to kick-start a campaign to raise the R 65 million required to implement environmental education at South Africa’s ten national botanical gardens over the next five years.

The Kirstenbosch Gardens inspires the collection and it has a connection to De Beers as Cecil John Rhodes (who founded De Beers Consolidated Mines in 1888 with Barney Barnato in Kimberley) purchased the run down Kirstenbosch Farm in 1895.

This collection will be auctioned in March in an event one canparticipate in from anywhere in the world. The proceeds will finance the roll out of a South African National Biodiversity Institute (SANBI) programme of education for mostly less fortunate school goers to visit a national garden at least once in their lives, where children get to appreciate the kingdom of plants which is largely not understood for the treasure and resource it represents.
