Message from Principal
Hi All,
Welcome back to Term 2. I am pleased to say that we have had a very
smooth start to the term. Yesterday I was hosting a school tour for a
prospective family for 2016 and they were amazed at how well our
students were working, how they were all on task and how focused the
learning in each of the classrooms was. On all the school tours I take I am
filled with pride and admiration for the work of our staff and for the way
our students demonstrate that they are responsible learners. Term 2 is a
really important time for learning and I know that each level of the school
is looking forward to considerable growth in the achievements of our
students.
Over the term we will have several key events that will highlight some of
the great things happening across our school. These events are designed to
keep supporting our strong home / school partnership. Two of these
include:
May 21st 7pm – 8pm Race Around Kew (more news about this
exciting event will be sent home over the next couple of weeks).
June 12th 7pm - iPad Parent Evening combined with Think U Know
Cyber-safety Session.
Soon you will also receive a newsletter from your child’s area that contains
an overview of the major curriculum concepts being taught during this
term. This will assist you to know more about what your child is learning at
school and enable you to have some follow up discussions at home by ask-
ing your child about what they have learnt and to explain it to you.
Our CARE program will also commence in Week 3 (May 5th) on Monday
afternoons. This is a whole school personal development program based
around our CARE values. Students will work in a cross age group (Prep –
Year 6) with the same staff member each week. The program will be led by
our Year 6 Leaders in each of the groups and run for 5 weeks of this term
and again in Term 3.
We will be trying something new for the last few Monday afternoon of the
term. Students will participate in our “Curiosity Challenge” sessions. This
will involve a high degree of student choice as the activities will be based
on topics of student interest and largely driven by their questions, ideas
and curiosity. For the first 5 weeks of this program (late term 2 and the
start of term 3) students will work in their current teams e.g. Junior School
and mix across the classes based on their selections. I am really looking
forward to seeing where this takes us and I know that our students will be
highly engaged and active during this program.

School Council also requires a minute taker. If you are a quick typist or have skills in this area and are able to
attend our meetings to assist please contact me at the school.
Compulsory Payment – Excursion Levy
A reminder that as of the start of this term students will not be permitted to attend activities that require payment
if this payment has not been received before the day.
This process will be strictly enforced to prevent some students subsidising the activities for others. We cannot run
any excursion or event if the cost is not fully covered by the excursion fee.
If you are unable to make the required payments or would like to speak to me about making alternative
arrangement such as a payment plan please contact me via the office to make a time. A student will not miss
attending an event if a parent or carer has made contact with me and made these alternative arrangements.
ANZAC DAY
Finally, today we held a short special assembly to commemorate ANZAC Day. As I mentioned to the students, the
purpose of this special day is to honour, remember and thank those that have served and made sacrifices for our
country. We talked about the symbols, signs and monuments that are used to help us remember these sacrifices
and we even uncovered or revisited some of the monuments around our school. Did you know that we have a
special box just outside the office that contains the Honour Roll for members of the Kew Primary School
community that served in WW1 and WW2? I showed these documents to our students and told them about 3
teachers from our school who served during the First World War. If you would ever like to see these documents
please contact me at the office. I also outlined some of the main concepts that I believe all students should have
an understanding of on this day. Ask your child if they can are able to tell you any of these!
Next year will be the 100th anniversary of the Gallipoli landing and our school will be looking for ways to ensure
that this significant event is honoured appropriately. If you have any suggestions or ideas please see me.

Message from Assistant Principal
Welcome back to Term Two everyone and I trust you all had some quality family and friends time, returning to
Kew PS with loads of energy and enthusiasm for the term ahead. As is always the case, this term will be busy,
providing Kew Kids with lots of learning opportunities and challenges. The teachers have planned their programs
thoughtfully, providing relevant learning experiences for all children wherever they are on the learning
continuum.
In the last week of Term One, Sally Marsh and I ran a Parent Helpers Information evening and we were both
thrilled with the number of parents who attended. Schools are richer places because of your input and the help
you all provide to classroom and specialist teachers is invaluable. If available, please volunteer to help your child’s
teacher in whatever capacity you can whether in the rooms, on excursions, at sports days, etc. We are all the
richer for the experience.

Kew Primary School Blog
Last week I received the following message posted on the KPS blog:
Greetings from Colorado! I'm bored at work so I decided to check out your website on my iPhone during lunch
break.
I love the info you present here and can't wait to take a look when I get home. I'm shocked at how quick your
blog loaded on my mobile.
I'm not even using WIFI, just 3G .. Anyhow, great site!
I have no idea how a random person in Colorado ends up reading our school blog, but it’s pretty cool that they do. Since I set up the blog in 2012, we’ve had 12,923 views in 70 odd countries around the world; I’ve posted 50 blogs and we’ve had 200 comments. But more importantly, I’ve had a lot of conversations with a lot of parents – and kids and teachers – about all sorts of important, fun and interesting things about our school.
Now, due to personal circumstance, I will no longer be able to run our school blog. Happily, Katrina Whelen has agreed to take over. Thanks Katrina! In order for the blog to be sustainable over time, Katrina will need lots of contributions from the school community so get thinking and get writing. Katrina’s email is: [email protected].
Thank-you to all the parents and teachers who have contributed so far, and thank you to everyone who has stopped me in the playground to tell me they enjoyed reading a post. It’s been fun.
Cheers,
Jacqui Tomlins

Le français – CLIL (Content and Language Integrated Learning) As I continue to embed the CLIL approach to second language learning into the French curriculum, I am pleased to report that in addition to my regular, weekly classes, Term 1 saw me working with Grade 3 classes on ‘Les Mathématiques’. In colour coded teams of violet; gris; noir et rose, students learnt about how to ‘Résoudre un problème’. Areas of focus included:
- Devinez et Vérifiez (Guessing and Checking) - Cherchez un Ordre (Looking for a Pattern) - Dessinez une Table (Drawing a Table) - Jouez le Rôle (Acting it Out)
Why not try les problèmes suivants with your child:
- Elodie mange quatre pommes et Patrick mange trois pommes. Ça fait combien? Et plus difficile:
- Le restaurant prépare cinquante-deux croissants. Trente-huit croissants sont vendus. Combien reste à la fin du jour?
This term I will be working with our Grade 4 students to provide additional CLIL classes, and I look forward to sharing this with you. J’espère que vous avez passé de très bonnes vacances! Madame Payne
Building and Grounds (B&G) Subcommittee
Are you interested in growing vegetables? Do you have a passion for kids’ sport at KPS? Would you like to help make our school more sustainable? Do you know something about plants and watering systems?
The Building and Grounds (B&G) Subcommittee would like to set up some smaller working groups of interested parents, carers and grandparents to do some specific projects or give these parts of the school some assistance.
The groups are:
1. Kitchen garden: helping Kerry Lomas, our teacher in charge, on implementing the plans she and the Green Thumbs have developed, applying for grants for the garden (eg. Coles Landcare), doing some work in the garden
2. Sports: helping Clare Connor, our PE teacher, particularly with her equipment and with implementing some of the wonderful suggestions she has received
3. Sustainability: phase two of cooling solutions (external blinds, internal ceiling fans, etc.), funding applications (eg. for solar panels)
4. Landscaping: helping with planting new native tube stock in Term 2, reviewing and implementing the forth-coming landscape planting plan from Outlines Landscape Architects (who did the terrific landscaping around the gym), reviewing the school’s water tanks and watering systems
5. Working Bees: help build on the Term 1 approach of one person coordinating a particular area of the school, with a walk-around in the week before to discuss the task list
The time commitment for each group is up to the group! It could be once a term at school to do some weeding in the veggie garden, or it might involve some research at home on grants and putting together applications. You would be most welcome to attend B&G subcommittee meetings (7.30pm on 6 May, 3 June, 5 August, 2 Septem-ber, 14 October, 11 November) but it’s completely optional.
If you are interested in any of the groups, have some excellent ideas for works around the school or if you have particular experience in one of these areas, please contact Stewart Waters, B&G subcommittee convenor at [email protected]. Stewart or one of the other B&G subcommittee members will then contact you with a date and time for us all to briefly meet each other!
Thanks and we are really looking forward to working with an enthusiastic group of parents, carers and grandpar-ents.
