PRINCIPAL’S NEWS NAPLAN This week Year 3 and Year 5 students have received
their NAPLAN reports.
You will find it helpful to also read the brochure that
explains clearly how to read your child’s report, that
will come home tomorrow. It is important to remember
that NAPLAN is only one of a range of assessments
we use to assess and monitor student progress.
Your child’s teacher would be more than happy to
discuss and explain any aspect of the NAPLAN
assessment process, including your child’s report.
If you would like to discuss this report please contact
the school and make an appointment with your child’s
teacher.
School Photo’s Tomorrow
We will be having our whole school photo, family and
group photo’s tomorrow.
Please make sure students are in their school uniform
for this day.
Book Week
Next Wednesday August 31st is our ‘Book Week’ dress
up and activity day. This is a great day for the students
as they rotate through literacy activities in groups made
up of students Prep-Year 6.
We begin the day with a dress up parade on the
basketball courts. Families are very welcome to join
us for the parade.
Please remember dress up can be very simple, we do
not want it to become a stressful time for parents. The
theme this year is ‘AUSTRALIA! Story Country’
Trivia Night
Our fantastic Parents Club has worked extremely hard
organising the Trivia Night. It is looking like a fun
night with lots of raffles, auctions and prizes. Thank
you to the many businesses that have donated items for
the night. A very BIG thank you to everyone who has
been involved. We are all looking forward to a great
night and raising lots of money for all of our children.
Inter School Sport
Tomorrow we will be playing inter school sport against
Mildura Primary School. All games will be played at
Mildura South, commencing at 1:30. Parents are most
welcome to come along and watch.

FOCUS: RESPECT This week the staff and students have been reminding one another about what respect looks like and sounds like. At MSPS we have been listening to other people’s point of view, using people’s names and thinking about how
we can contribute to our classroom learning.

ASSISTANT PRINCIPAL’S NEWS
What children learn from their Fathers
Michael Grose
High work ethic, honesty, supportiveness and loyalty
were all values that men directly attributed to their
dads.
A Galaxy Research study found that three quarters of
Australian dads nominated their father as the person
from whom they learned their most important life
skills.
Shaving, riding bikes, driving and changing tyres are
the skills that men attributed to their dads.
At first glance these may not appear too startling but
dig a little deeper and you find that they attribute vital
lifelong success characteristics to their dads.
The results of the study show that dad is the ‘doing’
guy. Mothers tend to interact with their children
differently. They are more verbal, developing
interpersonal skills and more likely to reveal what is on
their mind.
The language of fatherhood is about activity – dads
teach many of their important lessons through activity.
Learning to be a good sport, to share and to work
toward a goal are lessons that dads teach their children
in very hands-on ways.
The study also showed that it was through activity that
men formed their relationships with their dads.
Playing, tinkering, building and pulling things apart are
the many things many dads do with their children.
What do dads teach girls?
Dads teach girls fundamental lessons about interacting
with males. When done correctly, girls expect to be
treated well and respectfully by males (both present
and future) as well as having the confidence to be
assertive.
That meant that fathers role modelled treating their
daughters and other females in their lives kindly and
being ready to listen to them.
Many studies have linked fathers with the healthy
development of girls, including self-esteem and
confidence.
Boys grow into their dads
Little boys want to be like their dads. They attribute
superman-like qualities to their fathers. Dads need to
make the most of this while they can, particularly when
their sons are primary school age.
Dads need partners who support them in their
parenting efforts and recognise that DADS DO IT
DIFFERENTLY.
