The English Learning area recently ran its first Writing Competition for Year 7-9

students. The judges Ms. Sargeant and Ms.

Eppingstall, were overwhelmed by both the

number of entries and the quality of them.

Prizes up for grabs were a digital camera for

first prize, a mp3 player for second and the

third prize winner received movie tickets. All

YEAR 7 PUBLIC SPEAKING COMPETITION

The Annual Year 7 Public Speaking Competition was held on Thursday, November 4th. Students from all Year 7 classes were represented. (Pictured Right)They had to speak for three minutes and could either deliver a persuasive speech or tell a story. The topics they had to choose from were “My Australia”, “Technology”, “Great Leaders” or “Journeys”.

Winners: 1st: Morgan De Silva– spoke about “My Australia” - 7F 2nd: Sam Treadwell – Technology – 7E 3rd: Qaris Webster – My Australia – 7D Special Commendation: Elise Karslake Journeys – 7F

PRINCIPAL Mr Gary Palmer has been appointed as the Ballarat High School Principal until a permanent appointment is made for commencement in Term 2, 2011. Gary will be leading the Staff of Ballarat High School in finishing the 2010 academic year,

planning for 2011, developing the School’s new Strategic Plan and ensuring in the process, that

every student is maximising their learning potential.

Last week the school farewelled former Principal Mr Peter Dredge. Peter has taken up a

promotional position with the Grampians Regional Office, DEECD.

Peter started here in 2006 as Principal and during the next 5 years made a significant

contribution to Ballarat High School and the Community of Ballarat. Under Peter’s

leadership the School had a growth in students attending here, an increase in the pathways

for students and a strong focus on learning with improved student outcomes. School

Council President, Mr Graeme Howard spoke at length about Peter’s contribution and

presented Peter with a gift from all School Community Members.

I would like to thank Peter for his contribution to the Students of Ballarat High School

and wish him all the best for the future.

STUDENT ABSENCES & LATE ARRIVAL AT SCHOOL.

Absences: Parents are reminded that when your child is away from school for any reason, you MUST contact the school to explain their absence. Late arrivals: If your child is going to be late for school they should sign in at the office before going to class. Please provide your child with a note to explain why they are late (or call the attendance line). Without notification from home all late arrivals are recorded as unexplained. The attendance line operates with a voice mail message bank 24 hours a day. Please call this number to record all absences and late arrivals.

GILLIES STREET TRAFFIC LIGHTS Parents are asked to ensure that if their student

uses the Gillies Street Traffic Lights, they must use

the crossing correctly. Incorrect use of this

intersection is dangerous and can cause accidents.

SECOND-HAND UNIFORM AND BOOK SALES

Ballarat High School is pleased to again offer parents/students the opportunity to sell books and uniform to other families, and to buy second-hand books and uniform at discounted prices.

SELLING BOOKS

Please check book lists carefully and only sell what you don’t need next year.

Only the books listed can be submitted for sale.

A 20% commission is retained by the school to cover operating expenses.

Books remaining unsold and no longer current to the curriculum will be donated to charity.

Books not to an acceptable standard will not be sold.

To submit books: Complete all details on the Second-hand Book List. Place this form and books in a secure plastic bag. Bring to Room AD2 (main building) before school or lunchtime. Years 7-9 in 2010, books can be handed in from 29th November, 2010. Years 10-12 in 2010, books can be handed in from 22nd November 2010. Last day to submit books for sale is Thursday 2

nd December 2010.

Family sale proceeds will be credited to Family Statements, which may then be utilised on your authorisation.

BUYING BOOKS AND UNIFORMS

Sales dates are as follows: Year 7 in 2011—Tuesday 7

Operating Hours are strictly 9.30am to 4.00pm

Year 8 & 9 in 2011—Thursday 9th December 2010

Sales of both second-hand uniform and books will be located in the Robinson Centre.

Payments must be made on the day by cash, cheque, EFTPOS or credit card.

Tax Invoice/Receipts will be issued to comply with the documentation required by the ATO Education Tax Refund.

2011 Booklists VCE Booklists were distributed to Year 10 and

Year 11 students last week. If you missed a copy,

please ask for one at your Team Leader’s office or

the General Office. Booklists will also be available

on the School’s website. Year 8, 9 and 10 booklists

will be distributed this week. Booklists are due

back at school on December 10th. The booklists

come with second-hand book sales information

attached.

Year 10 and 11: Orientation Program and Course Confirmation

Exam Redemption: All students who miss an exam for any reason must make arrangements with their Team Leaders to complete it at an alternative time during the exam period, or on exam Redemption Day, 26

th

November. Students may negotiate to redeem the exam at a time when they do not have a scheduled exam. In this case, catch up exams are to be done in the same venue as the original exam which was missed. If completing missed exams on the Redemption Day, there will be three time slots available (9:00am, 11:05am and 1:35pm). All sessions will be held in Peacock Hall. It is the students’ responsibility to ensure they complete missed exams

Orientation Program: 29th

November – 1st

December: The Orientation Program allows our students to start their 2011 courses. They will receive valuable information and be given the required work to do prior to returning in 2011. All students have been allocated a timetable with their 2011 subjects. Attendance over the three day program is compulsory and counts towards their required attendance for each unit.

Course Confirmation and Reports: 13th December: Students are required to come into school and see their Team Leaders (during school hours). Students will be given their reports and the final confirmation of their 2011 subjects will occur. This meeting will confirm each student’s place in 2011. If students cannot attend it is imperative that you make prior arrangements with your Team Leader prior to December 13

th.
