Dear Parents and Friends Welcome to the first week back at BPPS. I would like to thank the staff, students and families who have welcomed me into the Acting Principal role. I look forward to leading the school in what is always a busy term. The week began very smoothly. We welcomed five new students to BPPS. They are Ryan W (FBG), Jing T (2SQ), Caitlin C (4TL), Hayden C (2LK) and Max F (FSA). We welcomed back Cat Fleming and Kirstin Jones from their long service leave. Both Cat and Kirstin have been sharing their holiday stories with their class and the staff. Were pleased to announce that Eric and his wife Jo are now the very proud grandparents of Freddy. Eric enthusiastically said that Freddy is the most beautiful child ever born – not biased at all! Very shortly Ill be sending an email regarding class placements for 2018. It is very important you read this carefully as the process is changing slightly from previous years. In order to assist with our planning in 2018, it is most important we know if you are leaving our school. As important are families who are planning to enrol. If you know of a family intending to begin at BPPS could you ask them to make contact with our school office. Were very pleased to announce the results of the Alliance Française Poetry competition. This year there were approximately 15,000 entrants with 600 finalists. BPPS placed second in the Grade 3 category with Juliet S (3CG), and Eleanor S (4CF) placing first in the Grade 4 category along with Ben R placing third (4CF). All our winners, their families and their teachers are invited to the Awards Ceremony at the St Kilda Town Hall on Wednesday 15th November at 7.00 p.m. Along with the students, we thank Madam Higgins for her preparation and planning. At the end of last term we received the results of the 2017 Parent Opinion Survey. The areas we re performing particularly well in include our schools: Physical Environment High Expectations for Student Success Promoting Positive Behaviour, and our Students Connectedness to School. We were particularly pleased to see Promoting Positive Behaviouron this list as it reflects the work we have undertaken with Bill Rogers and the leadership of this area through a whole school approach lead by Monica Lindau. Two areas for further improvement include: Teacher communication, and Student Motivation and Support. Over the past 18 months weve had a focus on improving our communication strategies. This feedback shows that we have more to do. Mid way through 2016, we distributed our school s communication strategy. This included: our updated school website, Sentral and the implementation of the Student Portal for our Grade 3 to 6 students, sending notices via Sentral, moving towards online author- isation and payment for school events, the use of Skoolbag for last minute updates, translating documents and a feedback process through our schools email account. We look forward to continuing to improve this area of our work. Community involvement is one our School Strategic Plan goals so we look forward to continued improvement being made. We thank the parents who responded to this survey, which for the first time was completed online. Dear Parents and Friends

WELCOME TO TERM 4!

Our Integrated Curriculum Concept for Term 4 is Creativity. The overview for each of the units is; Team Foundation - the unit capitalises on the universal appeal of fairy tales and guides students to think laterally and creatively about common tales. Students create a customised theatre and puppet to depict their topsy turvy tale. Team 1-2 - students will work in groups to design and build their own robot buddy. They will be scaffolded through selecting materi-als to construct their robot and will work at programming their robot to do chores in their bedroom. Team 3-4 - students are scaffolded through the creative process of developing interesting characters, settings, and stories as they build a story. They will develop storyboards, design and build props for purpose and photograph moments of their story. Team 5-6 - students gain a real-life understanding of the design and production process when creating a brand new product. Each student produces an item that is marketed and then sold at a market called ‘Bizarre Bazaar’. The item that is produced must be origi-nal. Proceeds of the market are then directed to the students’ charity of choice. Although Art Week is over there are still many pieces of amazing work located throughout the main building for you to see. If you haven’t had a chance, please drop by as soon as you’re able as the students are beginning to take their masterpieces home. A final reminder that it’s Term 4 and therefore our SunSmart policy is in place. Students must wear their hats during all break times as well as during sport and physical education where they are in the sun. We thank you for your support with this very important pro-gram. Enjoy your weekend. Randal Symons Acting Principal

NEWSLETTER DATES TERM 4

Friday 27 October

Friday 10 November Friday 24 November Friday 08 December

Newsletter deadline is Wednesday 1pm

in the week of publication

Ava Booth of 6JK is our artist of the week for the week beginning 16th October. The grade 5 and 6 children have begun work on a Kimmy Cantrell inspired ceramic mask. After watching a YouTube video of Kimmy talking about his work and looking at examples of work by Kimmy and other students who have used his work for inspiration, the children used coloured papers to plan and prepare a design, ready to begin work with clay and paints in the coming weeks. These paper designs are mini artworks in themselves, on the basis of which we are really looking forward to the children realising their plans. Well done Ava on your fantastic design! Jennifer Hortin & Lisa Trevorrow

A belated thank you to Jane Smithwick Fellingham and her enthusiastic Foundation Fa-thers Day stall team! Great to see Foundation kids smiles choosing gifts for their Dads!

Do you love organising large scale events? Are you an event manager or a super organ-ised parent (or set of friends) that would like to organise the 2018 BPPS FAIR!! We are keen to secure a co-ordinator for the 2018 event. There is no denying this is big job but a rewarding one. Estimated time commitment would be equivalent to 1 day per week for 6 months. Our previous co-ordinators have very kindly streamlined a lot of the work, profor-mas etc and Jacquie White is more than happy to offer guidance. Interested? Call 0418 357 937 (Kylie).

There is a Long standing BPPS tradition that the GRADE 5 par-ents help make the outgoing Grade 6 graduation night a special

one. It is an emotional night for many as parents watch the formal grad-uating ceremony then enjoy food and drinks, celebrating their child’s time at BPPS. The school organises the formal ceremony in the Stadium. But we are calling for a small group of parents to: • Book a caterer for canapés & drinks • Arrange waiting staff • Arrange Kids pizza delivery & drinks • Setup trybooking for ticket sales • Arrange setup of the stadium foyer for parent mingling • Pack up • Add your flare for a little "something special" on the night. All helpers are welcome but one or two parents (maybe friends) to lead the team would be ideal. Interested? Call Kylie 0418 357 937

Enjoy a night out with other grade 6 parents to cele-brate the end of primary school! Friday 27th Oct. Hellenic Republic in Kew, $55 per head which includes meze, meat, salad, potatoes and dessert, drinks avail-able to buy on the night. Looking forward to a great night! Booking close soon don't miss out!!! www.trybooking.com/SDEH

FOOTY DAY THANK YOU!!

Many thanks to the mums who helped on Footy Day

Junior Hoop Time Report On Thursday the 14th of September, all of our Grade 3 and 4 students ventured off to Dandenong Basketball Stadium to participate in the Junior Hoop Time competition. We had 22 teams participating on the day in the Rookies, Future Stars and All Stars competitions. A lot of work goes into putting these teams together, organising helpers, preparing students in P.E. lessons and organising the day but it is all so worth it when you see the excitement and enthusiasm of the stu-dents not only on the competition day but in the weeks leading up. The number of times I have heard ‘Can we play a game of Basketball again?’ is endless. Hoop Time provides a wonderful opportunity for some of our students to partici-pate in a new experience whilst others can put on show all of those Basketball skills they have developed over their years of playing. One of the most exciting aspects of the day is watching all of the teams and players develop their skills over the day and the sense of team spirit evident whether there was a win, lose or draw. Reflecting on the day many students commented on how they had so much fun and felt their game and team improved over the day and this is what it is all about!

A big THANK YOU to all of the parents, older siblings and Grade 6 helpers who came along on the day to assist

with supervising, coaching and scoring for our teams. The day could not run without this assistance! Lyndsey Thwaites

Division Athletics We had 14 students represent the school at the Division Athletics Carnival at the Bill Sewert Athletics Track on Wednes-day 11th October. These students competed in events that they had finished in the top two for at the District event last term. We had some fantastic throughout the day. These were our top 3 finishes: Michael Roberts (1st 200m and 2nd 100m) Ben Gale (1st 800m) George Margaritis (2nd Shot Put) Will Louey (3rd 100m) Tadhg McCarthy (3rd High Jump) 12 Yr Boys Relay (3rd) – Michael Roberts, Bailey Milligan, Ky Ingram and Ben Gale

We wish all of our students who finished top two the best at the Regional Athletics Carnival next Thursday. Thank-you to Mr Milan for assisting on the day as well as the many parents who transported and supported the students.
