CUT COSTS WITH THE SATELLITEAUTOMATIC DRILLING CONTOL SYSTEM
The realization that constant, precise weight control is a
critical factor in drilling efficiency, has led modern drilling tech-
niques toward automation. It is universally recognized that
manual operation - however skillful - is unable to keep this vital
weight control within the required limits throughout an entire
drilling program.
Every deviation from the optimum weight on the bit for a
given formation increases the cost of making hole. Uncontrolled
bit-weight variations adversely affect hole straightness, penetra-
tion rate and bit life.
Satellite Automatic Drilling Control - unique in conception
with its two-speed differential Gear Unit for regular and high
speed drilling and its Comparative Weight Indicator for sensitive
visual control-has proven itself accurate, reliable and safe during
thousands of hours of trouble-free performance on all kinds of
rigs and under all drilling conditions.
Simple to install and simple to maintain, the Satellite will, for
years, go on making hole better and faster than by any other
means, manual or otherwise, and the minutes it saves tour after
tour grow to hours and days and weeks. Thus, it not only rapidly
pays for itself, but keeps paying dividends in time saved, longer
bit life, reduced wear and tear on the rig and improved overall
efficiency.
AUTOMATIC DRILLING CONTROL SYSTEMODESSA, TEXAS - 432-381-6565
Control originates in the Satellite pneumatic deadline diaphragm (fig. 1) or in a hydraulic tie-down anchor (fig. 2) which senses the deadline tension and reacts to its variations.
These reactions are relayed to the bourdon tube of the Controller Unit where they are continuously and automatically compared with a pre-set point, corresponding to the desired weight on the bit.
When that weight, reflected in increased deadline tension, falls below the set point, the Controller opens a valve to allow air to be fed to the Air Motor.
Rotated by the Air Motor, through the two-speed differen-tial Gear Unit, the lift line reel reels in a wire line attached to the brake lever of the drawworks.
It raises this lever and permits the drum to rotate and to feed off drilling line.
This increases the weight on the bit and reduces the tension in the deadline.
The instant the drum starts moving, it rotates a rubber friction wheel against the inside of the drum spool. This rotation is transferred by flexible shaft, as a reverse force, to the differential Gear Unit. There, it overrides the action of the Air Motor and lowers the brake lever by gradually unreeling the lift line. When the weight on the bit and the tension in the deadline have resumed their initial relationship, the Controller Unit closes the valve to the Air Motor. The brake is fully applied. The cycle is completed.

SATELLITE AUTOMATIC DRILLER..The principle of the Satellite Driller is based on the relationship between weight on bit and total hook load. Any variation in one causes an inverse variation in the other.
The purpose of the Satellite Driller is to maintain a constant predetermined bit weight in order to obtain optimum drilling efficiency.

Compensates for worn, imperfect or wet brake linings for consistent, on target performance.
Two-speed gear unit covers widest range of penetration rates.
Smooth, gradual opening and throttling of the air valve provides sensitive, precise bit weight control.
No electrical components - safe operation in explosive atmosphere.
Rugged construction - years of trouble-free service.
1.Precise bit weight control originates direct from
the Martin-Decker weight indicator system which continuously monitors any change in weight. Weight signals are simultaneously displayed and relayed to the Satellite controller unit.
2.Activated by the air motor through a two-
speed differential gear unit, the lift-line raises the drawwork's brake lever, this allows the drum to rotate, feed off drill line and increase weight on bit.

3.The bourdon tube in the controller unit reacts
to weight changes and, in turn, continuously compares actual bit weight with the preset desired bit weight.
When the desired bit weight falls below the set point, the controller opens a valve which regu-lates air flow to the air motor.Satellite Driller differential gear unit with lift line reel.Break lever with lift line attached.Driller's console with Satellite Driller installed.
4.By means of a friction wheel riding against the
drum spool, the drum rotation is transferred as a reverse force back to the differential gear unit. This force overrides the air motor action, gradu-ally releases the lift-line and allows the drawwork's brake to be applied.
When the actual bit weight reaches the desired weight set point, the controller closes the air motor valve and the brake is fully applied.

FAST, EASY LOAD CONTROL FOR SERVICE UNITS.
THREE CONFIGURATIONS THAT MEASURE UP.
The easiest/ most versatile way for a well servicing operation to control hook load while running a double-fast-line or swab-bing with a sand line, is with a Hydro-Mast Weight Indicator.
This reliable hydraulic system will read weights of up to 360,000 Ib., whether the deadline is fastened to an anchor, traveling block or crown. It's ideal for any well servicing rig.
The system consists of an indicator, one or two-pad compression-type load cells (depending on the type of mast), intercon-necting hydraulic hoses with quick-disconnect fittings at the gauge end, plus hydraulic fluid for the instrument and a hand pump. It is completely calibrated, sealed at the factory and comes ready to install and use.
When installed, the Hydro-Mast Weight Indicator will detect the slightest weight change. Such activity will cause the com-pression load cell to generate a hydraulic pressure signal which travels through the connecting hose to the Bourdon tube of the gauge. Tube movement drives the single and/or dual pointer indicator.
Type HM-6-1 is a single pad load cell system with a zero-adjust six-inch gauge and adjustable damper. The target pointer can be set for the maximum weight desired. The single load cell senses the total weight of the mast and hook load, and it relays the hydraulic signal to the weight gauge. This system is available in ranges of 0-25,000, 0-50,000, 0-100,000 and 0-150,000 Ib.
Type HM-6-2 is a two-pad load cell system. The indicator has one six-inch gauge with a hook load pointer and adjustable target pointer.
Two smaller gauges provide the weight of each pad to help the operator equally distribute the load. Thus, an integrator provides the signal to the large gauge. Choose from capaci-ties in ranges of: 0-50,000, 0-100,000, 0-150,000 and 0-240,000 Ib.'
Type HM-8-2, also a two-pad system, features a larger 8% inch main gauge which utilizes a zero-adjust dial with two pointers. One pointer indicates hook load while the 4:1 ratio vernier provides a magnified indication of the slightest hook load changes. Capacities are available in ranges of: 0-120,000, 0-150,000, 0-160,000, 0-240,000, 0-300,000 and 0-360,000 Ib.
The Hydro-Mast Weight Indicator provides accurate readings over its long service life. All systems are housed in a heavy-duty steel box with removable front and back doors to protect the gauges during shipment, installation and removal. A two-inch diameter coupling is welded to the bottom of the cabinet for mounting on a pipe stand for increased visibility.
Additionally, these DICKS gauges are fluid-filled to lubricate, prevent rust, soften vibration and avoid fogging.

HYDRO-MAST WEIGHT INDICATORS
COMPOUND PRESSUREINDICATOR SYSTEM
GM4 and GM4P Series
Takes the guesswork out of Fracturing, Acidizing, Cementing or Mud Pressure Indication
• Used primarily for monitoring pump pressures on service trucks engaged in cementing, high pressure hydraulic fracturing operations or acidizing operations involving downhole stimulation of oil pay formations.
• Dual dial is ideal for these operations since pressures in these processes range from high to low depending upon the kind of pay formation being treated.
• Compound gauge has two pointers.• Dial has 4:1 vernier reading for indicating small pressure changes, such as
formation breakdown or plugging of perforations, fractures, etc.• Vernier pointer makes four complete revolutions for full capacity of gauge,
giving four times more resolution for same pressure change.• Standard pointer is full 360° sweep of capacity of dial.• System consists of pressure gauge with dual dial, high pressure hose and
diaphragm protector assembly.• Gauge mounts in any convenient location for easy visibility. Usually mounted
near truck mount recorders on service truck.• Fluid-filled gauge dampens most truck vibrations and adjustable damper
controls pump oscillations.• Pulsation damper, located at top of gauge, can be used to reduce pointer
movement to steady, even action.• Pressure gauge receives its signals through high pressure hose from
diaphragm-type protector assembly,• Diaphragm, mounted on any 2" connection, is equipped with rubber cup which
separates pump fluid from hydraulic fluid which actuates the gauge.• May be substituted for standard mud pump pressure gauge (GM6A).• Has all of the advantages of standard pump pressure gauges.• Can be easily recorded on either hydraulic circular recorders or electronic
remote strip recorders.
Pressure Indicating Manifold System with two indicators and gauge protector sensors.
PRESSURE INDICATING MANIFOLD• Provides two indications: annulus pressures and tubing and drill pipe
pressures. Ideal for drill stem testing, cementing or acidizing operations.• Pressure signals relayed to gauge indicators for convenient remote readouts.
Gauges and hoses housed in light carrying case.• Compound vernier-type gauges with long pointer movement provide optimum
resolution of small pressure changes. Capacity is up to 16,000 psi.To order—Specify capacity and application. For additional information request pressure indicating manifold information.
Example: The compound gauge shown here has a 16,000 psi capacity. The inner dial has a yellow pointer which indicates psi; each increment shown represents 1,000 psi. One complete revolution of the inner dial yellow pointer indicates 16,000 psi. The outer dial has a red pointer which indicates psi; each increment shown represents 100 psi. One complete revolution of the outer dial red pointer indicates 4,000 psi.
