Dictation Strategy:The What, How and Why

Dictation is not just writing down what the teacher says...It has a process of instruction.

Dictate a sentence.Depending on students level, dictate a two to five word sentence, using only words that students have already learned to spell. Let students know that they need to focus their attention as you will only be saying the sentence once. This is challenging their ability to focus. Start off easy so that students learn the process first.

Student orally repeats the sentence.Repeating the sentence will help students to retain it in short term memory long enough to write it down. This also gives you a chance to see if the students are accurately hearing the sentence.

Student writes the sentence.Don’t correct students as they write out the sentence, even if you see them start to make a spelling mistake. In fact, it’s best to look away while writing! This will allow them to concentrate on what they are doing without feeling like their being monitored or judged, and it allows them to “own” the process of spelling. There will be time for correcting spelling after the next step.

Student proof reads the sentence just written. In this step, the student reads their writing aloud or to themself. This is a good time for your students to practice self-correction. They should check by asking themselves these questions: Am I satisfied that I have spelled everything correctly? Did I use capital letters and punctuation properly?

Finally, check the sentence and correct together.Write the sentence on the board and cross check WITH children. If you identify a misspelled word, swing into action and teach the correct spelling. This is an important teaching time! If there is a specific rule, generalization, or irregular spelling bring focus to it.

Step 5
