This week is the final week of winter sports and our men’s basketball team has qualified for the
elite eight tournament at the University of Portland Chiles Center. Congratulations to Jefferson
and Lincoln men’s teams and Benson’s women’s team for also making it to the elite eight. A
great showing by the Portland Interscholastic League. Our first game is Thursday, March 8th at
8:15 p.m. vs. West Salem.
Our seniors are anticipating the end of their K-12 education and making plans for opportunities
after high school. The spring months leading up to graduation can be difficult for some students
and this can impact attendance. Please encourage and support students to attend school every
day. Attendance issues can prevent students from being successful in classes and potentially can
influence their ability to graduate on time. Students must be finished with all requirements if
they intend to participate in the graduation ceremony on June 4th.

SPRING MUSICAL-INTO THE WOODS
The Grant Performing Arts Department is proud to present their musical Into the Woods.
The show runs March 8-10 at 6:30, with an additional matinee on the 10th AT 1:30.
Performances continue the following week, March 14-16 at 6:30 in the Auditorium. This
production includes the Theatre, Band, Choir, and CTE Audio Engineering and
Woodworking programs - do not miss these incredibly talented actors, singers, musicians,
and technicians. Charming and poignant, with a dark twist, this popular musical blends
many familiar fairy tales into one adventure into the woods as characters seek their

Concessions, with donations from local bakeries, will be sold at the show. The Thespian
club will also be selling flowers for the performers. Please come and support Grant
Performing Arts.
BOOSTER AUCTION
Thanks to everyone who came to the Booster Auction on Saturday. This event raises
money to support athletics, activities and clubs at Grant High School. A special thanks to
Booster President, Miriana Clark, the auction committee and Booster members for
planning and hosting the auction.
STUDENT-RUN BUSINESS
Patti Downing, SpEd Career Coordinator and Community Transition Coordinator,
established a student-run business this year at Grant. Through grant funds, she purchased
equipment for a printing business and has helped teach a class for SpEd students. Our
goal is to establish the business which is run by students at Grant (SpEd and Gen. Ed.) as
a way to teach students skills related to careers. Students learn skills in accounting,
inventory, budgeting, sales, advertising, photoshop and excel, collaboration and problem-
solving. Special Education teacher, Mary Flamer, is also teaching the class and
supporting the students. Recently the teachers and students presented a workshop about
their experience for a local conference on Youth Transitions Programs. Here are some
pictures of their presentation.
ROSE FESTIVAL COURT
On Friday, Grant’s two Rose Festival candidates gave their speeches at an all-school
assembly. We will announce the name of the person who will represent Grant High
School as a Rose Festival Princess at an assembly on March 7th. Congratulation to both
candidates: Jada Mann’s-Wadsworth and Melissa Torres-Duran.
GRANT GENDRILLS COMPETE AT LIBERTY HIGH SCHOOL
The Gendrills competed on Saturday at Liberty High School and placed 5th in the Show
Division. Congratulations to the athletes and coaches, Kali Capps and Breanna Williams.
Their set was built with assistance from the GeoTech class at Grant.
The team will practice two more weeks and then enter in the state competition.
CONVERSATION ABOUT PREVENTING TEEN DRUG AND ALCOHOL USE

us on the 12th to begin the conversation about how families, in partnership with the
school community, can engage and support our young adults while they navigate this
period of their life. Grant High School is excited to partner with Big Village, Multnomah
County Wraparound Team, NW Family Services, and Volunteers of America for this
event.

4STAR HUNGER PROJECT
Meineke has partnered with us to provide a resource for students and families in the
Grant community. The project will allow us to support students and families with a
weekend supply of food when school lunch and breakfast is unavailable. Our goal is to
provide a backpack that would include 2 breakfasts, 2 lunches, snacks and possibly fresh
fruit and/or vegetables. The food is provided free of charge.
Meineke is one of our Marshall neighborhood community businesses and they have
helped get us started with backpacks and food items. We also received a monetary
donation from the class of 2007 from monies collected at their recent 10-year reunion.
Our long term vision is to make this a sustainable resource for any Grant family who is in
need.
If you are interested in donating to this program, we would welcome any non-perishable
food item(s). These items could be: instant oatmeal, granola bars, canned
fruit/applesauce, canned tuna/chicken, peanut butter, pasta and pasta sauce, soup/chili,
rice, beans, cup-o-noodles, etc. All items can be delivered to A30 (office in the gym
foyer, West side of building).

the partnership with Meineke and organizing the project.
PTA
McMenamins Friends and Family Night for the Grant PTA - Save March 13 for dinner
out at the Mall 205 McMenamins and the Grant PTA will receive 50% of proceeds for
the night.
Our regular meeting will be the following week, March 20, at Grant, featuring a
presentation by Madeline Kokes on summer jobs and internships for students.
Fred Meyer Rewards Fundraising
A very easy way to help raise money for the PTA is to link your Fred Meyer Rewards
card to the PTA. You still receive all your same Rewards benefits and the PTA earns a
percentage. For the third quarter of this year, the PTA will receive a check for $629 with
106 households participating. We could easily increase participation in this program with
the number of families we have. Tell your friends and family members, too. Signing up is

ADDITIONAL COMMUNICATION TOOL
PPS has shifted family, student and staff communication to a new tool that gives schools
the ability to send texts about emergencies, closures, delays and other important news.
To receive text notifications, you must opt in to the service. You opt in by texting YES
to 68453. Parents and students should confirm their cell numbers listed in the student
information system. Staff should confirm their cell numbers are the “primary” number in
the PeopleSoft system. For more information about texting, go to www.pps.net and click
on the “Mobile First” button.
