President’s Corner

there will be parallel competitions for the kids, etc. It is a holiday weekend so plan to bring the whole family for a Porsche Memorial Day in 2013. Don’t forget the Driver’s Ed associated with this Zonefest. This is an activity not normally associated with a Zonefest. For those of you who have never tried a Driver’s Ed, it is an opportunity to drive your Porsche on a race track at speeds that would likely result in a moving violation if not worse on public streets. For those of you who are new to the activity, you would drive your car with an instructor in the right seat to guide you, with focus on keeping you safe and having fun. The focus of the event is safety first, then teaching and fun. The rules are designed to have the conditions be as safe as possible while giving you the opportunity to play with your Porsche. This Zonefest weekend really does have a little of everything. If you normally attend PCA socials, but not many driving events consider checking out the autocross, rally, and DE as well as the socials. If you are a track junkie and could use the Memorial Monday DE fix while including the family in a weekend, try checking out the socials and meet some new Porsche friends. If you haven’t registered, and made your room reservation there’s time, but don’t wait too long; the Chateau Elan already has a number of reservations for the event plus there is another club on the track that weekend! If you would like to volunteer, Zonefest would be a great event to join in the fun, we need you! If you have already volunteered, thanks and let’s keep the momentum going!

As always, I would also like to invite you to attend a board meeting. We meet the first Thursday of the month at a restaurant or a member’s house. Any member is welcome to attend our board meetings and share your ideas. It is your club and your board would love to have your input. Even if you do not attend a meeting please don’t hesitate to communicate your ideas to a member of our board.

I look forward to meeting you and seeing you and your Porsche at an event in the near future.

We are off and driving fast this year, Congratulations to Shane Lewis on his victory in the GTX class at Daytona. The Porsche Corral was great fun at Daytona, so many nice people and beautiful Porsches. A trip to put on your calendar for next year if you missed out this year.

48 Hours Club Race was amazing again this year. It was a fast and eventful weekend. Thank you and congratulations to all who helped to make it a successful event-participates and volunteers alike.

Many of us are just returning from the second driving event in February, a 2- day driver’s Ed at Sebring. We share this Driver’s Ed weekend with Sun Coast region and it is always a strong event. With over 200 participants it is one of the largest Driver’s Ed events in the country. It’s no wonder, having the opportunity to drive your Porsche on the famous Sebring International Raceway in February; it does not get any better than this.

Once again, I would like to take a moment to thank all of the enthusiastic volunteers that help make our club run smoothly. Without their hard work and effort, our club events could not happen. If you have volunteered to help put on an event, thank you. If you have not taken the opportunity to volunteer please come out and volunteer soon. You will see the club from a different perspective, meet many new friends and enjoy the club even more.

Have you made your plans to attend Zonefest- May 24- 27? It is right around the corner. It is our pleasure to host Zonefest this year and it will celebrate our 50th Anniversary as a region. Wow, it’s pretty amazing that this club of car enthusiasts has been around and providing activities and opportunities to meet friends and enjoy our cars for 50 years. Zonefest is a PCA zone 12 multi-event weekend. What that means is there are many things to do. It will be like a mini PCA Parade. There are lots of exciting things in the works for this Memorial Day weekend. The weekend is planned to be at Sebring and the Chateau Elan which is centrally located in Zone 12. We have rooms blocked out at a discounted rate for our members and this event. Don’t delay and miss the discounted rates.

The weekend will include something for every Porsche enthusiast and those who may just want to relax in the company of many friends, some of whom you have yet to meet. The weekend will include; a Concours, a Rally, a tech quiz, an autocross, lots of socializing, and even a Driver’s Ed. Our Zonefest this year will truly be a family affair including most of our activities with parallel events for adults and kids alike. I don’t want to spoil the surprise, but while the adults (or those who are at least chronologically adults) are enjoying the Concours, the kids will enjoy a parallel activity, while the adults are enjoying the autocross and rally

Concours Corner: How to Dry A Car ...

Fred

...To Avoid Swirl Marks

In our last issue we covered swirl mark avoidance and the effectiveness of microfiber towels.

We leaned that improper washing, drying, or waxing of the paint surface likely caused these annoying circular micro scratches. This month we want to look at ways to avoid scratching the car after washing. There are obviously a lot of ways to dry a car, and our goal here is to cover some basic ways that are a lot less abrasive, and also trouble free.

For starters, do not use bath towels, rags or most anything else that was not designed for drying cars. Bath towels are horrible for this purpose. While they will dry the car, if your goal is to avoid scratches, you will fail miserably. The same goes for rags. There are many ways to properly dry a car, so let’s look at some.

One of the most common, tried and true ways to properly dry a car has been with the use of chamois. They have been around forever, and most of us have used them at one time or another. Chamois come in two forms: natural or synthetic. Natural chamois are made of 100% natural leather and tanned in cod oil, which gives them their suppleness and great leather smell. They are very durable, absorbent, and soft when wet. Synthetic chamois are obviously man made and are gaining in popularity, because they appear to be just as soft, are even more durable, and claim to be up to 50 times more absorbent than natural chamois. Generally speaking, even with their good characteristics, I rarely use them except in the hard to get places, or just for touch up. There are more efficient and better ways to dry a car today.

Another method that has gained popularity in recent years is the use of the drying blade or California Squidgy. These flexible, ultra soft blades (squidgys) are about 10-

12 inches long and are made of medical grade silicone. They claim to have been thoroughly tested to make abrasion a thing

of the past, even on the most sensitive and delicate surfaces. I have been using one of these for years and find them very useful and efficient, especially on the windows. Here again though, I use this on my driver cars and not so much on the Concours vehicles. I don’t yet feel as comfortable using one on a perfect surface.

Last month we spoke about the microfiber towels and how some can be blended for more absorption characteristics. The plusher and fluffier ones are better, and their softness is a plus. They can absorb a lot of water. Most of the better manufacturers make special towels specifically for drying. These typically come with a waffle like weave, perfect for trapping water, and, along with their larger size, makes the job much more enjoyable. These work very well and are soft on the paint.

We could continue to discuss more scratch prevention drying techniques, but for the sake of time and space, here is a secret method that’s not so secret. But most people don’t use it, or even know about it. It works amazingly well, it’s super safe, fast, efficient, and leaves the car with zero swirl marks. It’s a two-step process.

The first step starts with the rinsing process. Most people use a nozzle at the end of the hose to rinse the car, and

that is the first mistake. Using a nozzle leaves droplets all over the car, making the drying process more cumbersome and difficult. Instead of using a nozzle, let the water come out of the hose naturally. You will notice that it sheets the car and makes most of the water just roll off the surface – magic! The second step is what I call the Stihl BG55 method. The BG55 is a nothing more than a good quality hand blower made by Stihl. It’s an ordinary leaf blower-type machine that compresses air and spits it out at about 140 miles per hour. This drying process is touchless, and dries the car thoroughly and quickly. Just make sure there is no debris that can blow around you, which should not be a problem on a wet wash surface.

Whatever drying method you use, you know from past articles that the less you wipe, rub, or scrub the surface, the nicer your car surface will stay. All that wiping and rubbing on the paint over the course of years always comes with a little risk, regardless of how careful we are. The more perfect we can keep our paint, the better it is, whether you show your car or not. Hope this helps.

As you read in the Presidents Corner we are returning from the 48 Hour PCA Club Race that took place the first weekend in February at Sebring. The event takes one year of planning and almost a week of execution by hundreds of volunteers. The event which has become the largest and most popular PCA Club Race in the world was well attended by racers, volunteers, and

spectators. The event seems to grow each year. This year was the 20th anniversary of the event. The weather was perfect and quite a joy for those leaving locations that had 14 degree temperatures. The cover photo shows the beautiful 2013 Boxster pace car provided by Champion Porsche. Look for more photo coverage of the event in the Kassette and web site next month. We also have a 52 page calendar/program of the event which will be given to our members while the last at the next few events.

While you are planning your calendar, turn to the last page for our upcoming socials. The Spring Fling is our most popular family annual picnic event. Please note the location has changed. We are doing a new Drive and Dine to Everglades City which should be a lot of fun not to mention some good eating. These type of events

have become very popular with our members so look for more locations in the future. If you know of a great location that the club would enjoy, please contact one of our social chairs and let them know.

I met many new members at our last few events who would like to become more involved. I told them to attend our board meeting and become part of our team. It’s that easy. We are all volunteers and continue to see the club grow by adding new members and seasoned members to a team that has many skills and a passion to provide a quality program to our members.

Please check out the announcement on our PCA Parade found on pages 24 and 25. The Parade will be held in Michigan starting on June 23rd. As a warm up to our national Parade be sure to sign up for our Zonefest hosted by Gold Coast. This will be the beginning of our 50th Anniversary celebration ending with a special event in December that will be released later this year. What better location to spend Memorial Day weekend than historic Sebring Race Track with your Porsche and other PCA members.

See you at the next event, Roger

This event is surely one of the most anticipated, really well liked and well-attended one. We had 118 people who participated and about 60 cars. This also included a few Vipers.

The weather started out really bad. I actually thought that not all the people who RSVP’d would show up because of how bad the weather was, especially in Broward. We changed the meeting location to the Tower Shops in Davie because of the construction at the 84 Diner but there was no place to sit and do registration! So Ed and I had to stand and do the registration! Trust me, the rain coming down did not help. Everything was wet! There were some real troopers there however. Even though the rain was non-stop, they stood in the rain with us trying to shelter under the almost bare trees, not once complaining that it was cold and wet. Thanks to those brave members who braved the weather with us.

By the time we got to Snapper Creek, the weather had cleared up significantly and it was smooth sailing weather-wise from there.

Thankfully, no one from our group got pulled over because there were state Troopers everywhere. We did hear that someone got pulled over as soon as they left Snapper Creek, but we assumed it was not from our group since no one said anything.

We stopped just past the toll on Card Sound Road to regroup and what a sight it was! We all stopped at the side of the road and admired the length of the line we formed.

We got to The Big Chill Restaurant about 10:45 am and had a great brunch. They always treat us very well and are always happy to see us. The food was consistent and very good.

Because of the tremendous response we got, we have decided to do it again in October. So we would have this brunch twice yearly. Once in January and again in October.

Thanks to Fred and Ed Kohly who led the groups from Snapper Creek and Tower Shops respectively.

In summary, this event was great. The cars, the drive and the people were amazing. Thanks to all who attended and we will see you for the Stone Crabs drive in March.

Beena Kohly, Broward Social Chair.

Danny and Sharron Shields for providing instruction to the newcomers, and to Brian West for making a valiant attempt to repair the timing equipment. The course was extremely challenging and offered elements for both the fast cars and momentum cars. When all the dust settled ladies’ fastest time of the day went to Sharron Shields and men’s fastest time of the day went to Steve Kidd. Complete results and a few photos are available on www.48hoursatsebring.com.

If we were to award long distance recognition it would be given to Ollie and Anne Halttunen who were visiting from Finland and spent the entire day at the autocross site. It was very interesting hearing about the autocrosses that they do in Finland and that their entire country is ONE PORSCHE CLUB REGION! In closing we hope to see everyone back next year, to add a “Stewards Challenge” to the contest, and again offer a fun-filled day of autocrossing as one of the components to the country’s most successful Club Race.

1st Weekend 3 Podiums

This year’s autocross challenge was certainly a mixture of the good, the bad and the ugly. For those of you who are not aware, every year in conjunction with Club Race an Autocross Challenge takes place at Sebring Racetrack as part of the planned activities. Actually the autocross course is on the skid pad across the bridge from where the race cars are running on the track. This year we were fortunate enough to again have Bert Smith Porsche as our sponsor. Bert Smith Porsche provided all autocross entrants with a unique t-shirt with a course map on the back as well as drinking water at the site. In addition, class winners were treated to a great trophy that was personalized with the winner’s name, class and place.

For several years now one of the highlights of the autocross challenge has been the “Co-chair Shootout” with Dave Herndon and Dan Smithyman each looking for the fastest time. This year the concept was expanded to an Executive Council (“EC”) Challenge where PCA President Manny Alban, Vice President Caren Cooper, Secretary Sean Reardon, and Executive Director Vu Nguyen slugged it out for bragging rights at the National office. The above challenges were all done in the same car and restricted to the best of two runs. This year the Co-chair champ was again Dave Herndon with Dan Smithyman vowing “this will not happen again”. The EC Challenge champ was very close with Vu edging out Manny by a half second.

And now for the “ugly”: Gold Coast Region’s timing equipment has never presented a problem that couldn’t be fixed on site. This year despite our best efforts we could not get the timer to work properly. Enter plan B – thanks to some fast thinking and resourcefulness, several stop watches and two experienced timing volunteers (Bill Foster from Everglades Region and Ray Fluitsma from Suncoast Region) timed all the runs to ensure as much consistency as possible using manual methods. Despite the equipment snafus timing ran very well and everyone enjoyed the event.

Thanks also to Darryl Brushaber for helping with course setup/teardown and teching all the cars, to

March 2013 | Die Porsche Kassette 23

Page 24: Die Porsche Kassette - Mar 2013

Nestled on the shores of Lake Michigan and the Grand Traverse Bay, the Grand Traverse Resort and Spa will host our fun-filled 58th Porsche Parade this summer: June 23 through 29, 2013. With 900 acres of rolling greens, woodlands and waterfront, a multitude of vineyards, orchards and coastal roadways nearby, there is much to see, much to do, and much to enjoy! The Porsche Parade is the PCA’s annual convention. It is a week-long extravaganza of car events, tech sessions, social events and FUN. Whether you like to autocross, rally, tour or, Concours, there is plenty to do and see. Attendance is roughly 2000 people, most of whom arrive in their beautiful and much loved Porsche automobile. The Parade is a great family vacation, and the Traverse City area has a wide variety of kid-friendly activities. You must register in advance for Parade as there is no onsite signup. Registration opens March 12th. There will be a link to register on www.pca.org and parade2013.pca.org.

CompetitionParade has four competitive events each year:The Porsche Concours d’Elegance gets started early on Monday, June 24th on the beautiful fairways of the Grand Traverse Resort. Whether you are an experienced Concours participant, a first time entrant, or a volunteer, there is an opportunity for every Parade entrant to get involved in this prestigious event. The Concours d’Elegance is not just about the competition, it’s about getting involved and participating with others who share a common appreciation for the Porsche marque. New this year! The Concours will include a “street” class for those who want to show their cars, but on more of an entry level. In the new street class, only the interior and exterior, including wheels and tires, will be judged. The Mobil TSD Rally on Tuesday June 25th takes us in and around the beautiful vineyards, orchards, forests and dunes of the area in a rally that’s sure to be remembered. The Michelin Autocross is on Wednesday and Thursday, June 26 and 27 at the nearby Antrim County Airport. With the Parade team promising a challenging old-school runway autocross, this is sure to be a fun event. The Technical/Historical Quiz will be presented to those who dare on the morning of Friday, June 28. Entrants will be tested on their knowledge of general Porsche interests, mechanical details, and the historical aspects of the Porsche family, business, and the ever-growing line of models and variants. Be sure to study for a top score or just show up to see what you think you know. Source materials for studying will be available on the Parade website as the date draws near.

BanquetsAs we say in PCA, it’s not just the cars, it’s the food! We host five banquets during the week at the resort. We also have two “open” nights for you to sample the local fare of Traverse City. Other activitiesYou can’t do it all! We have activities for kids and teens, an Art Show, Goodie Store, a 5K run/walk, a Gimmick Rally, an RC contest, and our local Tourmeister has assembled several driving and van/motorcoach tours to show us the beauty and

interesting locations around the Grand Traverse Bay area of Upper Michigan. We end the week with a true Parade of Porsches through the east side of Traverse City and up Old Mission Peninsula. The Parade Tech Academy will be held Friday, June 28th, and once again, we have an exciting mix of our outstanding PCA Technical Committee and outside speakers. Michelin hosts a “drive and compare” where you can take laps in two identical Porsches, with two different types of tires. We will have a golf tournament on The Bear golf course at the resort, host to the state’s oldest and most prestigious tournament, the Michigan Open Championship from 1985 through 2008.

LodgingThe Grand Traverse Resort and Spa is our host hotel, and can accommodate all Parade goers. The resort properties range from beachfront condos in a variety of configurations, to the centrally located hotel & tower rooms. Special PCA rates will be available; upon registration you will receive an authorization code to access these rates. Entrant Eligibility and FeesYou must be a PCA member to register for Parade and only registered attendees may participate in Parade activities. Entrants and co-entrants must be PCA members, but they need not be family or affiliate members. Automobile eligibility for the Autocross, Concours and TSD Rally is outlined in the Parade Competition Rules (PCRs) available on the pca.org website. An entrant and/or co-entrant may enter up to two automobiles (thus separate cars for the Concours, rally, and autocross), and only Porsches as defined in the PCRs may be registered. Entrants may participate in other events (such as tours or gimmick rally) in any automobile, even if it is not a Porsche.Everyone signing up for Parade must pay an entrant fee of $159, which covers the entrant and co-entrant. JPP (Junior Participant Program) entrants are the sons, daughters, nieces, nephews and grandchildren of PCA members who are 16 or 17 years old. CAFP (College-Aged Family Program) entrants are the sons, daughters, nieces, nephews and grandchildren of PCA members who are 18-25 years old. Other guests are welcome, however, only the entrant, co-entrant and JPP/CAFP entrants may enter the competitive events (except children ages 13-15 may register for the Tech Quiz). If other guests are PCA Members, they must submit their own registration and pay their own registration fee to enter the competitive events. Additional fees apply for banquet tickets and selected other activities. Questions? If you have questions regarding Parade, please consult the Parade website at parade2013.pca.org. If you are unable to find your answer there, email Kathleen Behrens, Parade Registrar at [email protected] or call 503.579.3423 (please leave a message).

Tech Corner: The “next” Porsche track car?

Ten years ago I wrote a business plan to build track/race cars from the first generation Porsche Boxster (986). I really believed that it would happen because this platform was the ideal and logical one for many reasons.Porsche made nearly half a million (500,000) Boxsters, which means that they will not be classics and therefore their prices are very affordable. You can purchase a 1997-1999 Porsche

Boxster for as little as $5,000 in good running condition.Because there are so many of them, used parts are very easy to purchase and are priced reasonably. This includes engines, transmissions, brake components, wheels, hard tops, body panels, etc., etc.

These first gen Boxsters all came with the 2.5 liter flat six engine producing 201 HP.This engine was designed to carry the nearly 3,000 lbs. of weight of the OEM Boxster.

But when you reduce over 600 lbs. by eliminating the carpets, the seats, the lining, some of the wiring, gutting the doors, removing the A/C and Power Steering systems, etc., etc. then the power-to-weight ratio all of the sudden becomes very attractive.

Some weight needs to be added back with a safety roll cage, racing seat(s), safety harness(es), fire extinguisher, etc., but the car can be brought to under 2,500 lbs. without too much problem

You can build a very basic car, or you can really option one out. Some of these cars are built to run in the popular and fast-growing BSR (Boxster Spec Racing) Series and therefore must meet the very stringent spec requirements. These racing specs allow for some changes in the suspension and exhaust and also allow for some engine protective gear such as extended oil pans, IMS bearings, Accusumps, external oil and transmission coolers and an extra water radiator, as you can see from these images.

Obviously, those that are just track cars or DE cars don’t have to conform to the strict BSR rules.

Page 27: Die Porsche Kassette - Mar 2013

Article by Pedro P. Bonilla, Tech Editor

Tech Corner: The “next” Porsche track car?

Many enthusiasts have built their own BSRs in their own garages, but there are some independent shops and race shops throughout the country that are now offering to build for you or even sell you an off-the-shelf Boxster Spec Racer as the three from TuneRS Motorsports shown below.

I’ve just returned from the 20th Anniversary 48 Hours at Sebring PCA Club Race which, by the way, is the largest Porsche Club Race in the world, and I was extremely happy to see how many of these wonderful cars had been converted to full-blown race cars or to dedicated track cars. The workmanship on some is fantastic and they are truly works of art.

As one of the two Tech-Inspection Co-Chairs of the event, I had the opportunity to see them up close and personal and to talk with their owners and builders.Everyone agrees that these BSRs are VERY fun to drive on the track. Because of their mid engine layout they have great stability, they are extremely quick through the corners and their brakes are legendary. The BSR is now accepted as a class by many racing clubs and groups throughout the US, such as: PCA, POC, PBOC, SCCA, and NASA among others.
