TITLE

T8: DIESEL ENGINE

THEORY :

The term diesel engine is to be understood in present purposes as any

“reciprocating engine” in the cylinders of which an introduced charge of air is

“compressed” sufficiently to ensure the spontaneous ignition and combustion

charge of air is “compressed” sufficiently to ensure the spontaneous ignition and

combustion of an atomized of fuel oil injected into the charge compressed air.

OBJECTIVE :

To conduct and obtain an engine performance curve/ full load test

APPARATUS :

1. Diesel engine unit.

PROCEDURE :

1. The main supply to instruments and exhaust fan is switched on.

2. Ensure “VARIAC TRANSFORMER” is located at “0”; volt position.

3. Cylinder “A” is filled with diesel oil to the minimum level (16 ml)

4. Water flow valve “E” is opened and water flow is adjusted to 15 litres/hour.

5. Oil filter valve “B” is adjusted to open position.

6. Throttle valve “C” is adjusted to start (Full throttle position)

7. Decompression calve “D” is lifted and maintain “Lift” position.

8. Starter key “E” is turned to start position. Starter motor is allowed to crank

flywheel for maximum 10 seconds only.

9. The decompression lever and starter key together are released together.

10. Upon engine star up, 1 minute warm up is allowed, before adjusting throttle to

middle position.

11. A suitable speed and load is selected, so that the engine will labor upon

reaching maximum load.

12. Load is reduced to no load or minimum and throttle position is maintained.

13. A fresh supply of fuel is introduced to measuring cylinder. Note consumption

rare when load is slowly increased.

14. The voltage and ammeter is monitored.
