My first car was a used,Lapis Blue, 1982 528e with50K miles. My intention wasto buy a reliable Japanesecar but a colleague coercedme to buy the BMW. I washesitant to buy the E28sedan as I thought Euro-pean cars were expensiveto fix and carried a yuppiestigma. However, I am glad Iwas talked into buying it andhave owned seven otherBMWs over the years.

I had driven the family Buickon occasion prior to buyingmy first BMW. The Buick wasugly, heavy, under poweredand handling was sloppy atbest. I was pleasantly sur-prised with the 528e’s bal-ance and handling. Powerwas barely adequate but thetorque of the BMW eta motorwas just great. The brakeswere more powerful than anycar I had driven before andthe steering wheel’s precisecontrol gave me a greatsense of confidence. After afew months of owning the528e, I found out about theBMW Car Club of America. Isoon became a member andenjoyed reading the Roundelevery month. Over the years,I became more active in theclub and have thoroughlyenjoyed myself and metsome wonderful people. Iread about the awesomeE28 M5 in many Roundelarticles and admired a few atclub events. As much as Iliked my 528e, I started anextensive search and endedup buying not one but two

E28 M5. One an 80K miledaily driver/track car, anothera 30K mile cream puff.

One of my M5s - to theuntrained eye it lookslike any other E28.

I think that all the BMW5 series sedans repre-sent a perfect exampleof a sports sedan in theera they were built in.No one combines theseemingly contradictorybenefits of a sports carand a sedan like BMW.The M5 is a perfectexample of this con-cept. I personally likethe styling of the E28M5 – subtle to the vastmajority of the people butdistinctive enough so thatthe savvy BMW fan caninstantly recognize theshadow-line trim, the allblack bumpers and thesingle stage M5 only BMWSchwartz paint.Even before I was a BMWfan, BMWs always caughtmy eye. They had a verydistinctive style, I don’t knowif was the kidney grills or thefour round headlights. Ireally like the visual stylingoffered by the four separateheadlights and the moresquarish kidney grills of

BMW made in the 70 and80s. The E30, E28 and E24models are still some of myfavorite models.

The E34 5 seriies was amore modern BMW with alot more chassis rigidity,better engines and ergo-nomic interiors. The lowmaintenance M50 engines,the Vanos technology andthe 340HP M5 engineproved that BMW’s middlename is definitely MOTOR!I liked the styling of theE34 5 Series. BMW washaving trouble with the

kidney grill shape and size.They changed the kidneygrills at least once during theE34’s lifespan.

When the E39 showed upon the horizon, BMW contin-ued its trend with betterengines, suspension andinteriors. The smooth sixcylinder engines were betterbut BMW finally succumbedto the competition and of-fered V8 engines in the M5. Ithink the E39 5 series stillhas the traditional BMWstyling in the rear and theside but the front is some-what rounded and headlightsand grills seem to gravitate

towards the PontiacGrandAM.

While the ///M divisioncontinued to produce awe-some cars, they startedintroducing ricey lingo likethe “power dome” and the“signature quad exhaust”.Don’t tell me the quad ex-haust is for performance.Dinan did a lot of testing andtheir upgraded performanceexhausts only use the rightside of the exhaust and theleft side pipes for show only.What happened to subtlemodifications like thestealthy E28 M5 styling?

No, this is not a BMW.It is a Pontiac.

Now the E60 5 series in onthe horizon. I saw a few ofthem being tested at theNürburgring in Germany. Ireally like technology andcan’t wait to experience themore powerful engines andfeatures like active head-lights, active cruise control,active suspension and activesteering. The new M5 isrumored to have a 500+ hpV10 engine and for the firsttime BMW is releasing a newcar that weighs less than themodel it is replacing.

However, when it comes tostyling, I think the front of thenew E60 5 series is evencloser to the Pontiac and notvery pleasing to the eye. The

seams in the bodypanels near theheadlights and thetail-lights stand outand distract the eye.The headlights carryover to the sides ofthe car and lookweird. I must admit

that Chris Bangle has contin-ued BMW’s traditions ofdistinctive styling but he hascertainly moved away fromthe traditional Bavariandesign cues. His idea ofcreating a design spectrumwhere the Z4 is on one sideand the 7 series is on theother end is interesting. Hesays that all other modelswill fit somewhere in be-tween the Z4 and the 7Series in terms of styling. Iam a fan of distinctive stylingbut I also like shapes thatare pleasing to the eye. Now,I am not asking for aPininfarina design but I don’tthink a car’s styling shouldrequire a 30 minute explana-tion where the design chiefuses phrases that don’tmean anything to me. I knowflame-broiled but flame-

surfacing doesn’t ring a bell!

I hope BMW continuesmaking the best engines inthe automotive market and

maintains their edge intechnology innovations. Interms of styling, I pray thatthey won’t go from Good toBangle to Ugly. It is veryhard to justify spending$50,000 on a car when itdoesn’t visually appeal tome. I wish the next genera-tion of BMWs will be morepleasing to the eye. Even ifBMW’s styling declines tougly, I am sure I will con-tinue owning BMWs as longas they are enjoyable todrive. However, I warn youBMW – Put a leash onBangle or my pending BMWpurchase may change to alease!Yes, the e12 looks dated

and new 5 looks modern.But the new 5 doesn'tlook like a Bavarian Se-dan. It looks more like a

hybrid US-Japanesesedan!

Street Survival provides:• A hands-on, educational driving experience in real-world situations to teach teens car

safety and control in their own cars.• Training about handling limits and car control in the cars teens drive everyday.• Trained and qualified driving instructors in the car with the students.• A wet course to allow students to experience mistakes at a very slow speed. In this class,

mistakes are learning experiences.• Challenging driving courses on closed parking lots that allow students to experience

abnormal car behavior and learn how to handle emergency situations.

The BMW CCA Foundation’s RoleThe BMW CCA Foundation is helping BMW CCA chapters to bring their driving expertise to teendrivers. The ultimate goal is for the Foundation to provide teens with tools to make them saferdrivers for the rest of their lives.

The BMW CCA Foundation provides the BMW CCA chapters with lesson plans, organizer plansand instructor plans. The Foundation also provides a portion of the expenses associated with the

schools and handles all registration and money collections.

How long does each class run?

Each school lasts a single day, approximately from 8:30 a.m. until 4:00 p.m. It involves one hourof classroom time for orientation and explanation of the day’s activities. We also teach the stu-dent the new language they will be using all day. The remainder of the day, the students enjoy ahands-on driving experience with a trained instructor in the car at all times, on a controlled, wet-down driving course.

The Great Marques at Old Westbury GardensConcour D’ Elegance, or as I like to call it “Carson grass”. This event is advertised elsewhere inthis newsletter so I will focus on demystifyingthis event so that we can see more BMWs onthe field. So here is the dirt.This is a car show on grass instead of asphalt.This event is run in conjunction with the PorscheClub and Aston Martin owners group. There willbe some sick Porsches and lots of James Bondtype cars on display along with our BMWs.

There are two classes, full concour and streetdriver. Full concour is where only the analretentive stand a chance. Did you know theycheck for dirt BEHIND THE BUMPERS and rateyou on how clean everything is from grill totalipipe? The prep for this involves hours andhours of time, and requires q-tips apparently.Only the very cleanest cars have a chance tocompete in this class. Good for those of youwith garage queens that never see a bad day,but not for me since I will be on the track twodays before at the NJ chapter Driver’s school atLime Rock.

Here is the class that I will be in, STREETDRIVER. That is where the mere mortals withdaily drivers will shine. Heck, two years ago Iwon a 4th place trophy in this class after goingthrough a hand car wash and getting the “Spe-cial” wash with Armor All on the tires. Streetdriver is for all of us that drive our cars regularly.I will be showing this year, and I might even

wash off the track scum before the show. Itreally doesn’t matter if your car has mirrorsmooth paint and crystal clear glass, just cleanit up and come on down because all membersare welcome to show their cars. If you canautocross and track a wagon, you can show ittoo. (That means you Jim, and all you otherTouring owners.)

So this is a wake up call to all those people Ispoke with last year who said, “Nah I’m notgoing to enter, my car isn’t clean enough.” Thatis a load of bull because there were somebeautiful cars in the special BMW parking areathat would have taken a top spot in the streetdriver class. Even if you don’t place in yourclass, you can still come away with that satisfiedfeeling of standing 20 yards from you parkedand seeing people admiring your car.

The event itself is a nice relaxing day in abeautiful place standing around looking at carsand shooting the breeze with fellow club mem-bers. So come on down and take a look, oreven better, get the deluxe wash and put her onthe field. Who knows, you might just win some-thing.

What would really be amazing is to see someof the earlier BMWs come out, like 327s, 328s,Isettas, 504s, 508s, 507s, Dixies, 1600s, 2002,320s, and all the other classic BMW iron tuckedaway in garages all over the tri-state area.

The Glen, the ride up seemstoo far and the ride back isbrutal, when do we go again?

Watkins Glen, the site of the2003 New York/ Patroon BMWCCA driving school is a legend-ary track a short (kidding) 5hours away near Corning andElmira New York. The ride upfor me was not exactly lowprofile. We had 6 E30 M3s andone E46 M3 in caravan. Wemade good time to say theleast.

The track itself is demand-ing, and I really respect allthose members that had therefirst day on the track ever. Irespect them because thetrack had some really technicalturns and none of them wentoff the track. For me, with a fairamount of track experience itwas like riding the newest,fastest, roller coaster for thefirst time. This track has it all,elevation changes, longsweepers at 100+, tight 2nd

gear turns, and braking zonesthat test your mettle.

The spirit of the club was infull force, everyone was thereto have fun, meet new peopleand help keep this eventrunning smoothly. The caliber

of instruction wasamazing, compared tosome of the other“Schools” offered in theTri-state area. In thepaddock, everyone Ispoke with had$h!+ eating grinsfrom ear to ear.Perfect weather,

good drivers and no acci-dents. The really cool thingwas that everyone wascourteous on the track.There was a point wherewe were three wide intothe bus stop and because of

the courtesy we all drove out.To top it all off, the diversity ofcars was awesome. The schoolwas run with Patroon BMWCCA and BMW ruled the fieldbut there were many others inthe field. Crazy turboPorsches, Mitsu EVOs, Crafts-man trucks. Gutted and caged

BMW racecars were pulled oftrailers and were mixed in withthe road going BMWs. It wasgreat to see the variety of carsas they all ran at speedSCREAMING down the front

straight. Camaraderie was everpresent, Members helping withspare parts and know how tokeep some of these olderBMWs going when the unfore-seen goes wrong. I was arecipient of such a gesture andI hope the few items I had lentout paid back some of thatgood Karma. The dinner at thetrack on Saturday night wasbuffet style, with speeches,drinks and lots of laughs. Itwas, dare I say a perfect eventfrom beginning to end. The ridehome was smooth, except for adeer, some traffic and sleepdeprived tunnel vision.

To all those people who readthis and said “One day, I wantto give that a try” I give you thiswarning: The track experienceis addictive, addictive enoughto make you quote the first line.

Since the time I was old enoughto be cognizant of the fact thatcertain cars are more interesting,unusual, and just plain cooler thatothers, I have wanted to see thiscar move under its own steam.This truly is not only my ultimateBMW, but also my ultimate car. Ihaven’t yet seen it run, but withsome effort, money, and maybesome help from good friends, Ihope to drive it before too muchtime passes. This is what I knowof the story of BMW chassisnumber 73273, Autenrieth bodynumber 250-232, otherwiseknown as my dad’s 1938 BMW327 Cabriolet. First I’ll describethe nitty-gritty particulars, thensome history. Hopefully I willavoid putting you to sleep!

She was built in June 1938 andsold on the 30th of that month byThabe und Sohn in Dortmund,Germany. The color originallywas navy blue with a blue leatherinterior and she was equippedwith the standard 1971cc 55 hpoverhead valve inline six-cylinderengine and Hurth 4 speed trans-mission. The front suspension is

independent with atransverse leafspring, lever typeshock absorbers,and rack and pinionsteering. The rearsuspension is aconventional live-axle and the brakesare 11-inch drums allaround. With theexception of theengine’s cylinderhead, the car is verysimilar mechanicallyto the leg-endary 328,with most

mechanical bits beinginterchangeable betweenthe two. Sixty-five yearshence, after 30 years ofuse and 35 years ofstorage, the high standardto which this car was builtand the quality of thematerials used are stillvery apparent.

I know very little of thecar’s history between thetime she was built and1962, when my fatherpurchased the car for the equiva-lent of $250, but there is at leastone story connected with the carfrom that time period that I believeto be true. Sometime during orshortly after World War II, anofficer in the French militaryowned the car. Apparently, he hitsomething or something hit himwhile he was driving the car andhe was killed in the accident.Evidence of significant repair workto the left front of the car seems tocorroborate this story. I suspectthat the car also may have seensome military use during wartimeas the dashboard was hacked upin a number of places and thereare a significant number of holesdrilled in the firewall that areclearly not original. It looks as if

My father, John Judd, bought thecar while he was serving in theU.S. Army in 1962. Despite thefact that he was an enlisted man,he, my mom (Marion), and theirdog lived “on the economy” inTreysa, Germany, a small burgnear Kassel and northeast ofFrankfurt. He bought the car froma gentleman named Konrad, town

garbage collector who was aninteresting character himself. Dadsuspected that Konrad might havebeen a spy for East Germanybecause he spoke perfect, unac-cented English, had the contractto remove the garbage from thesmall Army base at which myfather worked, and had sophisti-cated communications equipmentin his basement. Dad had a goodworking knowledge of radioequipment then because he hadbeen an engineer working onmissile guidance systems andradar sets for Sperry-Gyroscopehere on Long Island before beingdrafted. In any case, Konrad (theComrade?), who owned several327’s, sold the car to my fatherafter deciding that it was actuallytoo nice to be a parts car, which

apparently was the original rea-son he had purchased the carhimself.

My folks used the car as theirprimary transportation while inGermany, driving it as far as Parisfor a vacation. I actually haveseen home movies of the carrunning and driving that weretaken while my parents were inGermany! There is one story thatI at least found interesting, if a bitcreepy. One spring afternoon, mydad was driving through Treysawith the top down on the car. Hewas wearing his uniform, he isquite a tall at 6’4”, and is ofnorthern European descent. Inany case, he turned a corner ontoa very narrow street, where hecame upon an older man sweep-ing the street. Upon seeing mydad in uniform, driving slowly upthe Strasse in the old Bimmer, theold man froze, dropped hisbroom, and simply stood thereshaking, staring open mouthed atmy dad as he drove by. Theimage of this old man, whom my

dad had obviously terrified merelyby his resemblance to what musthave been an evil specter fromthe man’s past, haunts him to thisday. While working on the car, Ioften think of that old man, won-der who he was and what mayhave happened to him immedi-ately before and during World WarII.

After completing his tour of duty in

1965, my folks returnedhome to Long Island,reclaimed their house, anddad went to work forGrumman as an engineer.Thankfully, he brought thecar home with him. Heused it as a second car fora few years, then when theneighbors complainedabout his parking such anold car on the street, he putit in the garage and disas-sembled it with the intent torestore it. Unfortunately,the time and economicrestraints imposed by the arrivalof four children precluded hisrestoring the car. The car satdisassembled in dry storage forthe next 27 years until dad wastransferred by Northrup-Grummanto Los Angeles, CA. I offered tostore the car in my garage forhim, but he wanted to bring thecar with him as he hoped to beginthe restoration. Unfortunately henever quite got to it and when itcame time for him to retire fouryears later, mom had had enough.She disliked California, wanted tomove to Florida, and was tired ofdragging what she saw as adecrepit pile of German hardwarearound the country. So dad calledme one evening and asked me if Iwanted the car. I told him that Idid, but didn’t have the money forshipping it, never mind what itwas worth, even in its currentstate. I told him that he could justas well sell it and buy himself anice old roadster to pot around inrather than paymore money toship it to me.He paused,then askedagain whether Iwanted the car.Hmmm……Ihad only beenharassing himmercilessly

about fixing it for the past 30years – OF COURSE I WANTTHE CAR!!! That was all heneeded to hear.

It arrived at my house from Cali-fornia on Friday, September 14,2001 and we all know what astrange week that was.

Long Island- Take your BMW to the beach! There’s ample free parkingat Robert Moses State Park- just make sure to head out early in the daybecause although the last part of the drive will make you feel like youhave been transported thousands of miles away, the traffic on the LIEwill turn you into a seagull before you get there. Westchester- Take yourBMW to the movies! Talk about a cheap date! The Warwick Drive In has

3 screens for your viewing pleasure, and the roads around Warwick are the best, most twisty, most beautiful. Warning: Pack your dinner because the food at the Warwick is inedible, and make sure you’re ready to go without a“rest stop” for the evening, or be prepared to tramp from your viewing area to the lone and forbidding single bath-room. The BEST Drive In- according to me, the New York Times- and anyone who has been there- is Becky’s DriveIn, in Easton, PA. It’s only 110 miles for the crispest dill pickles, yummy foods, ample toilets and a staff that isknown to dress up for the occasion. 5 boroughs- Yonkers Meet Take your BMW to meet new friends- where else buta parking lot? Every Thursday at 7pm an ever-increasing numberof Bimmer lovers has been gathering behind the Best Buy at 2458Central Park Ave in Yonkers and heading over to the nearbyeateries for pizza and BMW talk. I missed the last one because ofThe Blackout of 2003- (did it HAVE to be on a Thursday?) I amheading out to the next meet, I hope to see you there! Hopefully

we can set up meets in everyborough, got any ideas inyour neighborhood?
