Updates on the Different Aquaculture Activities and Major Projects of BFAR-NIFTDC

• NIFTDC-BFAR - more than 24 ha fisheries research facilityTwo main functions:

• To conduct of development studies on different aquaculture species• To provide services to the fisheries industry in terms of technical,

laboratory and training• Simple protocols in the commercial production of different species

such as milkfish, freshwater prawn, rabbitfish, seabass, silver perch, dojo, tilapia, etc. are developed

• Center spearheads the PhilippineBangus Development Project

• Intervention program of BFAR to increase the production of bangusfry in in the country which has a shortfall of about 3,580M per year

• Commercial production of fry done by bangus satellite hatcheries established in strategic locations in the country, mostly owned by the private individuals

• The program may enable the production of 50M fry and more than 250M eggs per year

• Center serves as training facility by government (BFAR & LGU) the private sector

• Project received support from theWorldfish Center and JICA

Updates on the Different Aquaculture Activities and Major Projects of BFAR-NIFTDC

• Center developed a simple protocol to commercially produce “ulang”

• Post larvae are sold at very low price to interested fishpond operators

• Dispersed through BFAR regional field centers

• Conducts studies on the use of cheaper food for larval rearing

• Established a Live genebank forMacrobrachium spp

Updates on the Different Aquaculture Activities and Major Projects of BFAR-NIFTDC

• A book identifying the collected samples of the species was published

• Ulang can be cultured together with tilapia

• The Center plan to work on genetic improvement of the species to improve growth performance and production

Updates on the Different Aquaculture Activities and Major Projects of BFAR-NIFTDC

• A milestone project is the development of saline tilapia hybrids(MOLOBICUS) by cross breeding and backcrossing O. niloticus and O. mossambicus.

• This project was through the partnership with French government (CIRAD).

• Undertaking growth selection (Molobicus Phase II)

• The project allows the growing tilapia in brackishwater• Use of saline tilapia can prevent diseases in prawn farming

(bioremediation) because the greenwater produced by tilapia was found to prevent occurrence of diseases in prawn and help in the control of unwanted weeds

• Molobicus can also serve as alternative species for culture in brackish and high saline environment (dominated by milkfish)

Updates on the Different Aquaculture Activities and Major Projects of BFAR-NIFTDC

• Undertook first verification studies on SPF/SPR P. vannamei for hatchery and grow-out operation in the Center in 2004

• The project has formulated guidelines and protocols for importation of vannamei broodstock, culture of vannamei in ponds, and accreditation of hatcheries to import vannamei broodstock

Updates on the Different Aquaculture Activities and Major Projects of BFAR-NIFTDC

• Commercial production of silver perch (Bidyanus bidyanus) was established in the Philippines

• Silver perch is endemic to Australia

• Considered to have high potential for aquaculture in high elevated/cold areas in the Philippines

• Center started the breeding with stocks donated by a private company in 2002.

Updates on the Different Aquaculture Activities and Major Projects of BFAR-NIFTDC

• Center can produce silver perch in commercial scale

• Breeding period of silver perch in the lowlands is 7 months from August to February of the succeeding year

• Species can tolerate salinity up to 16 ppt

• Commercial breeding of rabbitfishes(S. gutatus and S. vermiculatus) started this year

• Siganid are considered high value species

Updates on the Different Aquaculture Activities and Major Projects of BFAR-NIFTDC

• Center started the hatchery production of Seabass (Lates calcalifer).

• Spawning and commercial production is now being implemented.

Updates on the Different Aquaculture Activities and Major Projects of BFAR-NIFTDC

• Dojo (Misgurnus anguillicaudatus) has good market demand in the Cordillera region as foodfish

• Cheap source of animal protein in the cold environment of the Cordilleras

• Protocol in breeding dojo has been established with a survival rate of 80%

• Selected areas in the Cordillera were stocked with fingerlings to increase the dwindling population of the species in the wild

Updates on the Different Aquaculture Activities and Major Projects of BFAR-NIFTDC

• Center also conducts breeding and propagation of various ornamental fishes such as:

• Koi Carp• Goldfish• Livebearers• Guppy• Flower horn• Angelfish• Fighting fish

• Center commercially produce Clarias catfish through hormonal injection

• Raft method culture of oyster was introduced by the Center

• Depuration of oysters is encouraged • Culturing of oyster integrated with fish (Tala-

Isdaan) has started

Updates on the Different Aquaculture Activities and Major Projects of BFAR-NIFTDC

• Commercial hatchery production of sandfish for sea ranching and aquaculture has started in 2009

Updates on the Different Aquaculture Activities and Major Projects of BFAR-NIFTDC

• AFA operates as a training facility of BFAR/NFRDI• The Academy aims to be the leading training center in the

Philippines for sustained dissemination of new and improved fisheries technologies

• aquaculture

• post-harvest

Asian Fisheries Academy

• BFAR-NIFTDC conducts applied studies and commercial hatchery production of different species to provide good quality seeds to local farmers in the Philippines
